Dirt Daily. How I fixed my Flatfender front bumper

- Sometimes your project vehicle might seem daunting, but you just need to chip away at it. Today I'm doing a fun easy fabrication job on the old mangled front bumper of this 1946 Willys Jeep CJ2A. Even though there are bigger problems that need addressed, this was a good repair that I could start and finish in a day. This jeep lived on a farm or vineyard for a long time, so it has been used, abused, butchered and ignored. This new bumper mod will make it one step closer to trail ready.
All of my welders and plasma cutters are from Miller Electric.

Fred I'm glad you brought up wearing gloves when working with metal. I've had several stitches from not wearing gloves. I learned after the second visit to urgent care.
You're a good teacher, Fred Williams. I like your videos.
Those "tractor style" tow bars look very familiar to me. When I was a little kid on the farm in Minnesota, we had drop-pin hitches on most of the implements - chisel plows, moldboard plows, cultivators, etc. Since some of the land we farmed was owned/rented up to 8 miles away from home, it would take a long time to drive a tractor at 15 or so miles per hour to get out and do field work. Also a 130 or 150 horsepower tractor plowing a 160 acre field could be a multi-day affair. So towing a farm truck saved mom or a helper having to come out and pick you up for lunch, supper, or running to town, even if you could reach someone on the CB radio.
At the time, our farm truck with the bumper hitch was a 1967 Ford F100 2wd, 289 V8, 4spd, long bed. That truck hauled a lot, including a 100 gallon diesel tank behind the cab. Lots of great memories.
yes, we had the same on our farm. I didn't scrap the hitch, just put it in the corner for some future project. or maybe I need a tractor to tow it with some day.
Fred, thanks for making these vids. I am a big fan and miss dirt every day very much!!!
Name of the series should be everything but running. Keep up the videos enjoy them
Fred, you are the man! Keep posting your progress with CJ2a. Cool jeep and great seeing you troubleshooting.
I love your tips and tidbits Fred! Even the moment of grinding a clean spot on the bumper for the welding ground clamp. A big help for a beginner like me.
the seam is also usually hardened from the welding process, so if your drilling, i always try to make the seam something i don't have to drill if possible. grinder sparks also will embed in glass so be careful when grinding near vehicles/shop windows. good video Fred!!
Yup, that's how I do it. Needs a clutch? I'll just install some cup holders instead
😂
Rock lights before engine and transmission.
love the way you show things, get in in front of the camera, take time to explain simple stuff, detail stuff and important stuff! very thoughtful, helpful and unassuming!
I too suffer from tinnitus and hearing loss. The PPE warning was good advice for young'uns.
Honestly, it looks good for a farm Jeep. If I didn't know it was cut out I would probably overlook it on first glance. Farm Jeeps are cool. I've seen several with 5th wheels in the back there was worked hard and put away wet.
four by mr rogers vibes. said as a genuine compliment.
Sweet Fred, looks like it was never modified. Love watching you work on the flat fender!
I like all your safety tips, I wear my personal protective equipment too. It only took a couple of E.R. visits to really make me appreciate PPE.
Love it Fred!
As a guy who also learnt the hard way! Gloves gloves gloves for every task now.
Thanks for all the useful tips! Always good to be reminded about safety measures
Kinda looks like faded Detroit diesel alpine green . Love the flat fender / old jeep projects keep em coming, you need to do a shop tour soon , you may think its dusty or cluttered but I would love all that space and lift . It sure beats the single car Garage I’ve been working out of for the past 25 years.
Well I can say from first hand experience rebuilding that T90 & Spicer 18 is about as simple as it gets. Drain the oils and let us see if it's oil or rusty mud because water contamination seems to be pretty common on these old jeeps and then you've got to hunt down NOS gears
Super helpful "How-To" videos. Please keep them coming.
about 24:30 .... i think the phrase Fred was looking for is ' if ya squint it's mint ' .. lol
and yeah Tinnitus sucks , especially when i'm trying to get to sleep
You know Fred with how that frame is broken and those vertical tabs I'd bet Mr farmer had a boom hanging on the front of that jeep I've see more than a few like that
Lovin this series! Can't wait for the next one Fred!
im digging the Flat fender content. im a XJ guy but i dig the flatties alot especially the CJ3B's👍
Way to go buddy.
You done good Fred
I have a mostly original m38 with a locked up go devil 4cyl. I have dreams of getting to drive it one day with my brother.
I’m not a Jeep guy but I really dig this project.
Very good class today
Love those flat fender jeeps. Hope the motor is still good 😊
love ur videos!......safety first
i don't know about first, but eventually
I Worked in a machine shop. I was on the Band-saw for so long I asked why So they told and showed me, How much money I Was making Them I could do Ring's, Also you need the right kind of cutting oil for what you are doing. other than that Have a Good Day!
The bumper looks like they already had a winch on it at one time before putting the tow bar on it 🤔👍🇺🇸
Awesome Fred!
Tires have interesting tread pattern.
Looks good fred👍👍
That is awesome, u motivating others to do the same. T/Y
Someone was planning a winch on that bumper, that’s why it was modified that way, but they never drilled holes for it.
Are the old military-style tires still available? I'm sure those new tires are better in lots of ways, but it's hard to beat the look of old militarys! Thanks for the videos! 👍👍
yes, check out Coker tire
www.cokertire.com
It needs a Belleview .
If you decide to part ways with this one, I'd like to give it a home in South GA.
Toss that chop saw and get an Evo 360 cold cut saw. It's so much better at cutting.
Awesome content!!!!
i dig it too
Keep going on the 2A! 😁
I think that color is called light moss green 🤙🏼
Looks good!
Enjoy your videos. Is there any secret to getting metal dust off magnets.
If you squint its mint
I was thinking sea foam green
I think what you are calling recovery points on the front of the Jeep were probably hinge points for something.
Good chit! When does the Ma Deuce get mounted? 🙂
Hey Fred, in the last video you had mentioned that you can still get those 16 inch "stock" looking wheels from omix on the cheap, I couldn't find any on their site, and I tried hunting them down and every repro wheel goes for at least 100 bucks, any places to check you know of?
Love the vid
Might be an old USFS green that’s faded over the years?
Fred, like you l love flat fenders. My first Jeep was a 53 CJ 3B. What are your thoughts on swapping in a Kabota diesel?
Looks like I have to get one now 😅
Is the clutch stuck
It's interesting how many people have tinitus. It would be nice if a cure was found, it's annoying.... If you squint, it's mint lol.
I find its only annoying if you sit and listen to it, if I keep moving and doing stuff it doesn't bother me as much.
For as long as I can remember, I've had ringing in my ears. I remember asking my mom about it when I was a kid. It's definitely gotten worse with age.
That was cool Fred, you did a great factory look fix on that front bumper. It’s the little details that add up so much and you’re a good instructor.!
Why leave the back side open?
Alfredo, now that Dirt Every Day is over maybe you can reveal who was it that wore the pink Sasquatch suit?
Suit? That was a suit?!?
why not use flat plate. Would have been a great place for a winch. I would have v'ed the ends to get a stronger weld.
Air forces foam green
Can I come sweep the shop for you?
Paint it orange like the wheels.
