Dirt Daily. Replacing a Jeep Wrangler YJ (or Willys Wagon) fuel pump

  • This Red Willys Wagon is based on a Jeep YJ drivetrain and fuel system, so when it stopped running I decided it was time to diagnose the problem and it soon looked like the fuel pump was the culprit. Swapping a fuel pump seems like a big job, but its not too bad and in no time the Wagon was back in action.
I got my fuel pump at Rockauto.com

I still remember the white YJ you worked on during Covid, Fred. Those segments were great because it was a bit of normal during crazy times! Very much miss Dirt Everyday.

I've done 3 different Jeep MPFI setups using a 91-96 YJ harness and ECM on swapped 4.0L's in a Scrambler, a J10 and a CJ5. For all of them I used an external fuel pump on the frame rail, the E2000 style. I've never had one fail. So for all the talk about in-tank pumps lasting longer, the ease of being able to carry a spare $30 fuel pump that you can swap out in 15 minutes makes that argument a non-starter in my opinion.

I've used Rock Auto for years, started in Campbell River BC. And no matter where I move to Rock Auto is my 1st go to. Got parts from them today from Greenwood BC.

The 4.0 is perfect for it. Love it. Great exploration camping vehicle.

An advantage to in tank fuel pumps is a flooded pump suction. This prevents cavitation or vapor locking of the fuel system. This is more of an issue with more volatile fuels. The entire fuel line is at a higher pressure than atmospheric. Keeping the fuel pump cool is probably not much of a concern.

    Hey Fred,
I use Sta-Bil in all my vehicles that sit for a long time. They have it for Gas, Diesel, and bio diesel. Can’t remember on the diesel sta-bil how long it is good for. I use it in the fuel tanks and the aux tank on the rear, but the gas sta- bil is good for 2 years. I also use it in gas cans for fuel I store for my generator.
Had good luck with it. You can also use sea foam. That can be used on gas or diesel.

That would be an amazing cross country trip home to my shop when you sell it to me.... Or I could just store it back east and then you have something to drive around the south.

Where I live I can usually order from ROCK AUTO pay the shipping and still come out cheaper than the local part stores.

Love that Wagon build. I've had my YJ since new. They got a lot of flack back in the day but they've gained more popularity in recent days. The JP Motor Pool sure had helped. Kaiser Willys sells repop 15's and 16's 4.5. I'm guessing they're made by MD Juan.

Rock Auto is great if you are luckily enough to get everything from one warehouse, but pretty much any time I order multiple parts, it always is shipping from 2 or 3 different places and the extra shipping charges usually make it not worth it.

I've always liked this project and having a basically stock YJ under the Willy makes sense. This doesn't need a LS.
I'd like to see you do more with this Willy because it's still a blank canvas. Let's start with a snorkel instead of the intake. Then the interior....How about it Fred?? Please

    • @4xFredWilliams
      @4xFredWilliams  4 місяці тому +1

i dont think it needs a snorkel, but it does need the interior finished

Kaiser Willys Jeep Parts sell The 16" Civilian wheels. They have safety beads so you can put tubeless tires or tube tires on them. Maybe better than the Omix Ada wheels.

I added an access panel under the carpet on my s10 blazer after replacing 2 fuel pumps within a few months. Then the fuel pump lasted forever and I never used the access panel.

Common problems in the old YJ system was the ECU capacitors. If you get no check engine light after key on is a solid indicator.

I watched this today, so then I went back and watched the two DED episodes on the Willys wagon and the LS swap and YJ chassis swap. And I like the ‘66-‘69 Corvair taillight on the tailgate. I wonder why that was installed? Was it Kevin, the previous owner, that added it?

Do not use a vacuum to clean a fuel tank. A shop vacuum uses air sucked through the hose to cool the open electric motor. Sparks, gas fumes could result in an explosion.

As for the wheels, doesn’t Stockton Steel Wheel make a version of that wheel?
Also, I really doubt those Patagonias are rated for that bus in single configuration, especially if it’s filled with folks.

Also: Willing to bet that your pinched hoses killed your pump. Pump was working harder to overcome the restriction and working against backpressure.

If you’re going to let your vehicles sit long term, use non ethanol fuel. The ethanol breaks down over time and causes all kinds of problems.
