I bought my 2000 for $500 w/74k , a cracked engine and a hole blown in the radiator. The previous owner knew nothing about maintenance. A used engine was $1000. Reman $1600. I got a brand new crate unit from my Chevy dealer for $1800 ( I know a guy ). After installing the engine ( and a bunch of other new parts ) and a fresh paint job I have an almost new 2000 S10. It may be primitive compared to todays trucks , but hey , it's mine and PAID FOR! Take care of your truck and it'll take care of you.

if people ever give you shit about it or call you crazy remember this...every month that truck is putting $500 back in your pocket compared to a truck payment. everything is paid back in a matter of months and then its cash back in your pocket for years and years along with reliability for years and years as well.

Sometimes a car appears to be o.k. with that sort of mileage on it,my Australian built 2002 model Holden Commodore runs the Chevy LS1 V8 engine in it which I bought in 2008 with about 183,000 kilometres on the odometer.
I replaced the oil pan gasket because it was leaky in 2013 & the engine started to make a clattering sound after the car was driven for 10 kilometres (6 miles),it appears that the lifters were gummed up (like toffee) with varnish & also sticking ,maybe replacing the oil pan allowed more fresh oil to flow up to the top which started freeing some of the stuck lifters up,note that the engine didn't run like a new one.
This year I got a job & threw a new set of aftermarket LS7 hydraulic lifters in it & a new timing chain kit,the engine runs like new now (better than when I bought the car).
I checked the engines compression which was within specs,it also didn't burn oil,the oil pressure tested good so the engines bearings were o.k.,all of the valves in the cylinder head sealed off when I tipped water into the inlet & exhaust ports of the cylinder heads when the cylinder heads were removed, they didn't leak.
So,it cost me about $1000 AUD on EBay to get the V8 engine back to what it was when it came out of the factory, it has almost 338,000 kilometres on it now.

Did you go back with a completely stock 2.2 L or did you put in a cam or anything? I'm looking at rebuilding another motor having ready to replace my 2.2 L in my 99 single cab short wheelbase truck. I'm looking at going with a RV type cam that I think I'm going to have to have ground because they just want to damn much for something like a stage 2 cam. I just need a few more ponies to pull my boat. I like that fuel mileage though I just wish these engines had a little more balls to them I'm going to punch mine 30 over and deck the block . See if I can put some bigger intake and exhaust in it.

quacksackerthegreat Starfire Stock rebuild but a few aftermarket parts like intake, spark plug wires, ngk iridium plugs, high flow cat and a thrush welded muffler. I was planning on upgrading the coil packs too but never got around to it. If you could somehow manage to fit a small turbo in there with a few psi of boost, that would make the most performance but then your mpg will drop significantly. These engines were chosen with fuel economy in mind so I would just tune it up and make it run as efficient as possible.

quacksacker Yeah, best way to do an engine upgrade like that would be to buy a 4.3L truck and start swapping everything over or just buy a nice 4.3L truck. There are a few things to make the 2.2 run more efficiently though like intake, wires, plugs, coil packs, remove the a/c, electric cooling fans, headers, high flow cat and muffler, tune your ecu.
Or also camshaft, slightly bigger injectors, a small low boost turbo if you can fit it in there, the stock internals should be fine with a few psi of boost but keep in mind that anything that adds more air or fuel will drop your mpg.
