Thanks! I'm not exactly making a giant hammer but I am making a giant screwdriver for a Kazuichi cosplay, so I'm definitely using some tips from here haha
Ikr!!! Most of the comments here are about making the hammer for danganronpa characters! I mean I don’t blame any of them danganronpa is amazing! (I might make one for Junko)
How much did you have to think about this ahead of time, like conceptualizing the hammer? Because the method you used was amazing, but I'm wondering how you got from "I'mma buy a giant freaking foam board!" to "HAMMER TIME!" It's fascinating. In the video, we watch you put together your already realized prop, but the realization process we don't see! How did you come up with that?! It's amazing! Also, off topic, why did you have to do two coats white, two coats buttercup yellow, and then the gold? Why not straight into gold? (Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I'm new to all this!)
Thank you so much! I appreciate all of your comments, by the way. :D Honestly I just looked at the official art for the Hammer and I thought about what materials/skills I already had in my arsenal. I decided to use foam board because I have a lot of experience with it and I knew it would be significantly sturdier to make the Hammer solid rather than hollow. After years of making fantasy things/characters come to life, you kind of develop a sense of what would be the best way to make things. As for the paint, I used 2 coats of white to make sure I started with a completely opaque surface and that none of the gray of the foam came through to discolor the final result. 2 coats of buttercup because of the same reason - consistency and opaqueness, and 2-3 coats of the gold because metallic gold paint is usually quite transparent, and meant for just a top coat sheen. The gold can often leave ugly brushstrokes or be inconsistent, so the more you put on, the less likely it is for that to be seen. I just want everything to look pretty and perfect at the final result stage :D
I put this video in my Tip+Tricks playlist and didn't comeback to it until know and I immediately knew what anime I was going to use this for. If your wondering what anime it is, I might just cosplay as Dekomori from "Love Chunibyo and Other Delusions" and I'm gonna make her giant hammer weapon with this!! Thx for making this video!!!
I should have seen this before making .y monokuma hammer :( i made it out of cardbored and used a yard stick as the handel. It also has no suport inside and moves if i move it too fast. I also used taPe to put it together. But its my first time making a prop so i think i did okay? For a first time atleast
Solid way to make a hammer! Nothing wrong with using paper mache to seal either. Ngl though. It was stressful watching you cutting and sanding the insulation foamboard without protection. This is a six year old video at this point so you may have already figured this out. But to those who are new to prop making, be sure to wear gloves and a mask when working with that stuff. It's fiberglass and not good to get those fine particles in your lungs and in your skin. I made the rookie mistake and felt little micropieces of it in my skin for years after I sanded a prop out of that stuff.
I would like to use this for my Amy Rose cosplay. I’ve been struggling with finding one and making one but maybe this would be a better solution! Very well done btw!
Allrighty heres a kind of weird question.... Im a man. me and my man friends want to cosplay as the 5 orriginal star guardians at a comic con over here. Now Im kinda curious to some specs. I mean i can't see you being as tall as me (not only are men most of the times the taller, but im dutch and a stagering 6'2.) in that case, to make the tower look HUGE next to me like it does on yours, how long do you think it should be?
Hii! I'm 5'4" and my hammer is 6' tall, so I would probably suggest around 7'. The bigger the prop is, the harder it will be to manage it though - and be sure to check prop size restrictions for any event or convention you plan to take it to as well! :) Looking at some official references, the hammer is actually almost twice as tall as Poppy, so making it proportionate would be very difficult! But I think if you make it about 7' tall, it would be appropriate. Best of luck on your cosplay! 💙
I was going to make a tree n flower hammer for my firbolgs spiritual weapon its going to be all nature themed this helps loads for a idea of how to do it!
SynergyCraft I meant the foam board but I found the brand. But I have to use 1 inch board, I don’t know if you would know but could there be any problems?
@@drewh6069 Shouldn't be any problem with using a different thickness board, just have to account for that when calculating how many layers you need :)
Oooo interesting. How heavy is it when finished? I am making Lolita’s impish trickster hammer from mobile legends and it’s kinda weighty so I’m trying to figure out lightweight methods :,
Hey, this is is helpful! I’m making a huge hammer in the shape of a honeycomb, something I saw on tumblr and I made mine hallow, I’m kinda stuck on how to attach the pole or handle since it is a hollow hammer! Have any good ideas or tips??
That sounds really cool! You should still be able to do PVC pipe with a connector piece, you just have to make sure to glue in the connector piece really well. Good luck on your prop!

@@weemao No prob! Yep, one board was all I needed! Near the start of the video I talked about measurements a bit. The board was 1.5 inches thick, The hammer was about 22 inches long, 16 inches in diameter at the widest point. I made 15 circles altogether and stacked them on top of each other. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much, I gonna use it as base for my hammer. I gonna do shea haulia from "Arifureta : From Commonplace to World's Strongest"... Do u have any tips for the hammer...?
Oooooh that is such a cool hammer!! My tips would be: make sure you reinforce the bottom spike well, I would recommend worbla so it doesnt get dented when its rested on the floor. For the extended parts on the hammer end, I would make those out of thicker EVA foam, like 10mm, instead of insulation foam board, so that they are more sturdy (and it will save a lot of time). I would love to see the work in progress and finished pics if you have an insta or fb page!
The cylinder, before I sanded it down to an hourglass shape, was 15" in diameter, roughly 24" in length, and had a circumference of 47.12" Hope that helps!
