    Great video Lyn, I had a similar thing happen to my variegated Echinopsis, went very wrinkly and corky around the base and actually lost most of its roots too, I ended up cutting it and now its re-rooted again and looking nice and healthy. Thank you for sharing with us as always Lyn, from Edith & myself to you and Hans, have a wonderful Wednesday 😊❤️🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

    Great video Lyn!!! Yes normally corking isn't harmful, just tree bark, hahaha!! But a dry dark spot is concerning. My Euphorbia evansii did this at the base. I cut away the dead tissue and then it started healing. Now you can see new growth into the " wood exposed area" like a tree does around a knot hole. Sometimes the livingpart left will take over and the plant survives well. Hope this is the case for yours!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks, to across the Emerald Isle, have a great day!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌴🌹🌿🌺🍀🌷🌳

    I had this on one of my small Eulychnia cactus plants I won from eBay about two months ago. Not to discredit the previous grower in any way, or the way it was sent. I too had a look at the soil and I managed to identify a few problems that could have led to basal stem erosion.
    There was evidence of a lot of soil compaction in the rootball, my plant arrived with no grit or stone in the soil at all and I think that the soil aggregates had bonded together like cardboard over time. I don't think the plant had ever been repotted since it was sown.
    When the soil is "rock hard", there tends to be a lot of surface run off, and that could mean the water will simply pool and evaporate at the surface before it can soak in or drain down the side of the rootball and out the bottom of the pot. This invariably leaves the plant dehydrated and encourages root loss.
    Cacti also like root aeration, it allows them to quickly grow new roots to take advantage of water pockets and to increase the network below ground. I replanted mine with a fresh and more dynamic cactus soil like you did,,and it has halted the shrinking for now.
    The plant has been propped up by a wedged stick to keep it from leaning over as it is a slender columnar. I am hoping if I give it a slightly boosted cycle of watering next spring with some early fertiliser in April it may plump back up and all I will be left with is the dried brown scab at the base.
    I won't know until next year if it works, but I will wait to try out this resolution to avoid the plant rotting off due to overwatering. It is still alive at the moment, and the plant has not got any worse since I received it, so the plan for the time being is get it through the winter.

      demonhalo67 I have some like that as well, was going to wait until spring to repot. How did you remove the old compacted soil?

    • @demonhalo67
      @demonhalo67 4 роки тому +2

      @Not going to Treehab. Thanks for the reply. I used a small metal fork to excavate the roots at the bottom and sides of the rootball. Sometimes you have large soil nuggets that remain attached to parts of the root. I simply break these up with my fingers by gently messaging it. There's also the risk of loosing some roots while you do this, but it can't be helped. Root suffocation is a far worse outcome if left as is, that could lead to the death of the plant. Cacti can regrow roots pretty readily so this option is one that I believe is worth taking.

      Thanks so much James for sharing your experience with your Eulychnia Cactus, and I will be keeping my fingers crossed that it recovers really well in time, and so true the best thing you can do for now is to get it through the winter, and it sounds like you have done a fantastic job at saving it, and it will have the upcoming winter rest period to recuperate for the following growing season :-D thanks so much James for sharing your info and for all of your wonderful support and comments and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Somerset for a terrific Thursday today XXXX

    That was a corking video, Lyn, great advice. I suppose it's just ageing, like the rest of us! If even you have corking on your plants then I'm sure it's not something you can avoid. It is strange that some huge plants don't suffer with this though, perhaps it's also a genetic factor? Thanks for the great advice

    Wow. .very informative indeed , Lyn. Now I know what to do if ever I have the same problem. Do you know why some cacti turn brownish or have brown markings not only around the base but on the body too? Like what I see at the top of this cactus?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 роки тому

      So happy you found the video informative Molly :-D yes sometimes cacti can get brown markings on their bodies due to being slightly damaged by insects or other spines or a bump on their skin, thankfully its nearly always harmless, the biggest threat is if the brown marks are small and circular as this can sometimes be scale insect, but nearly all the time its harmless corking, thanks so much for your wonderful support and comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Malaysia for a terrific Thursday evening ahead XXXX

    This has happened to two of my rare gymnos. I was freaking out. I unpotted them and saw they had the old soil from the vendor tightly packed. I don't think the roots were getting air or anything. I washed them and have them hydrating and will repot later. I hope they'll be ok. I wondered if it was lack of light. I had them on that window sill that's been nothing but trouble despite being an east window. Oh I like Echinopsis mammillosa. Those are rare in the US. I'm lucky I found one. Wish I could find a second so I could have a breeding pair.
