As of April, 2023 this video is outdated. 😞 Seoul has eliminated the TMoney card and is pushing everybody to the TMoney app, which is only in Korean language. Single-trip cards are available and at least those vending machines do provide other languages, but are still somewhat confusing. EDIT: TMoney cards are still available for purchase at convenience stores, just not from the vending machines in the subway.
When it comes to public transportation, the US is way behind. The subways we have in the US are totally disgusting like the NYC infested with rats, dirty and the urine smell everywhere
one of the best subway systems I have ever used, what I love is that there are glass doors that won't open until the train has stopped at the station (makes sure no one can jump in front or cause other problems, wish we had that for Caltrain and BART in the bay area!) Also if you get a Tmoney or Cashbee you can use these cards on buses and the subway throughout all of South Korea and Jeju island (wish we had that here)!
exactly. i watched this because i wanted to see how subways in korea were like. i saw comments praising their subways under a news report of someone pushing a random stranger in front of a train. wish every subway could have these glass doors.
This was SO HELPFUL! I’m visiting Korea in October and have been stressed about having to use the public transportation but this really helped calm my anxiety! Thank you!!
Seoul's subway system looks pretty straight forward. I like how they have a machine to add additional funds to your card upon exiting in case you go further than you planned, and your card is almost out of funds. This is a very helpful video for when I plan a trip to Seoul one day!
Great Video! As a Korean, I'm proud that foreigners like the subway system! Only one small error on the video, the last part, refund part. Those machines are not for refunding tmoney cards, but for single use tickets. You can ride the seoul subway via 2 methods, tmoney card(just as the video) or single use tickets. The price is both same in seoul(in other regions in Korea, single use tickets are roughly 10% expensive). However, for single use tickets, you have to pay a 500 won(0.5$) deposit fee every time you buy a ticket. After riding, you place your card to that machine and your 500 deposit is refunded! Please note that it is hard for foreigners to get a refund for your t money card, since it takes roughly a week and you might need a Korean bank account. So don't top up too much at once. One side note: you can use your tmoney card on convenience stores like 7 eleven, gs25, and cu, just like cash!
There is some misunderstanding in this video. The refunds part, you said it refunds your charged money but that is not it. The machine actually refund the deposit of the "card" you bought. The card you introduce here is T-money card which you can use most of the transportation including subway, bus, even taxi. But there is this orange one-time usable card(you can use it mutiple time but it is kinda vulnerable so dont) you can buy in 500 won(50 cents) this card is only usable in the subway and if you used it up, you can go to the refund machine and refund your 500 won but not the money you charged in there. You can buy T-money card as souvenir but if you are not interested, just use one time card and don't charge too much or you might lose your money. Also, the machine do not refund your T-money card. It is only for 500 won card.
Look at the 4:40 second part. The sitting grandmother is impressive. It's impressive how she tells the woman standing in front of her that she can help her because her bag is heavy.🧚
Koreans take great pride in their subway system because they know it's probably the best in the world as many foreigners comment, it may be the best in the world.
There is no such country as South Korea, it does not exist! ........ Call it by its proper name please ......... "The Republic of Korea" or just Korea, its not complicated!
Thank you for taking this video!! Even though I'm korean and live in Seoul, I didn't know that there is a card with such a cute character on it!! because I usually scan a credit card with a transportation function, I rarely use that machine. Thank you for such a great video. Also, Thank you for visiting Korea.❤❤❤🇰🇷
Did anyone notice at 4:41 the elderly lady told the girl that she can sit on her lap but the girl kindly refused. I swear people in Korea are so caring and nice!
It looks like the elderly lady told the girl put the bag on her lap. The girl was using her cell phone and holding her bag (not holding the handle. which is not recommened on the train for safety). I think the lday concerned about that.
Thanks for the video! I was freaking it out because I'm going alone in a few days and I didn't know how it'd work, but this made me feel much better :)
Let me correct just one thing. The REFUND MACHINE in the last part is NOT for T-MONEY card. It's for the card type ticket for one-time ride. The card ticket charges you the fare plus the card deposit(500won KR). You return the used card and get 500won back.
Thank you so much!! Me and my bf are in Seoul right now and I've been so scared to even try it because neither if us can understand korean so I was scared I'd make a fool of myself 😂😂 so far we've been walking everywhere just to avoid transport but we really need it for tomorrow so thank you!! You've saved me 😂😂
This is so helpful. Planning a trip next year and this is the first time we are going to use the subway. We went to Japan before COVID hit, and we were so afraid of the subway there we end up taking uber instead, but Korea subway looks easier to navigate through.
it's great when the hawkers come in and demonstrate some useless but novel doo-dad! I got a rubber octopus you throw on the wall and it walks down. The Koreans I was with were mortified but I was completely mesmerized with that thing!!! 😵
When I visited Seoul in 1998, the tickets were paper with a magstripe. And if you rode the (then) brand-new purple line, the turn styles weren't turn styles at all. They were these pads that would come out right in your shins. I called them shin-bangers, and I absolutely hated them.
I mean the biggest bill it takes is10,000. There are no 20,000 bills. So you'd have to use two 10,000 bills. Don't quote me on this though, I didn't use those machines often. I usually went to the convenient stores to top-up. Now I use my bank card.
I'm not sure if they accept 50,000-won bills, but if they do, yes they will give you the change. When you select a 5,000-won top-up and insert a 10,000-won bill, you are given a 5,000-won change. That's the whole point of selecting the amount of top-up.
What about using the airport subway train? Does that require a different ticket or can you still get a T money card and use it to pay for that? Thanks in advance!
You can use the T money card for any subway line in the country. It also covers most of other public transports including buses and taxis. Some tourist/private buses may not accept T money.
I have a question so let’s say u arrive from an outside country to the Incheon airport and u wanna get to ur hotel is their like a really close subway to the Incheon airport and if not if u take a taxi and have at least 3 luggage’s do u think it will fit and the subway looks too crowded for u to be able to have luggages
There's an airport train... it's called "AREX" -- it goes from the Airport to Seoul Station in the center of Seoul. There's also a slower version of the train that connects to some subway stations along the way.
I’m going at just 18 years old with my best friend in about a year... This was so helpful! Also, how do you know which stop to get on and off at if you can’t read Korean that well??
Wow, big points off (especially for a supposedly super-modern country) for the fare machines not taking credit cards! Also, no pay-with-your-phone app? Even the Seattle subway has that...
they have t-money app there. Also, if your credit card is issued in s.korea chances are it comes with the transportation card option inside it. If you're just visiting, best option would be to download t money app.
It's mostly foreigners who use the machines or people who normally drive but are randomly taking subway for whatever reason. Most people use their phone or their bank card. I personally just use my bank card.
Why charge with your credit cards while they function as embeded transportation cards? (added to your credit card bill every month) Also, of course there are apps (more than three, at least) that supports pay-on-the-go for transportations around the whole nation. Samsung pay is one of those apps and guess where Samsung is originated from.

It’s very helpful the video you put out.

Why is everything so expensive (1250 won for only ONE ride). Just think about it, $ 1250 for one ride!
i assume you're joking, but if you're serious, ₩1250 is only a little over a dollar.

Seems like a very nice and clean Subway. Unlike what we have here in the US
Indeed!
Seoul Subway is the best in the world!
I like it without doors so the rain can wash away the piss and the sun UV ray will destroy the bacteria and kill all the bed bugs.
Chinmay Joshi The NYC subway is the largest system in the world by number of stations though, and it’s being revamped 😉

Much easier than Tokyo for sure! :)
If you got more money into your T-money card, you can refund cash any convine store. (-500won fee)
Visit Korea, after terrible covid :)
The T-card machine works like a vending machine so you need to carry some cash to top it up. The best, cleanest, and safest subway in the world.
