  • Great wheel spinning in the driveway!
Milissa Ellison Dewey of Bobbin Boy, a Peter Leicht “big” wheel from 1863 and some mohair sliver...
So, in just ten minutes, let’s learn to identify a Johan or a Peter Leicht wheel; spin from the fold; long draw spin; know semi-worsted from semi-woolen; spin intentionally for a weave effect of muted or obvious weave structure; spin in reverse / ply; load your weaving shuttle directly from the spindle; and anything else that crossed my mind!
One thing I forgot to say that we discussed prior to the video: Why are there so many turned grooves on the drive of the spindle? Answer: To align with the wheel. These were sold as separate products and no one knew what would align. Sometimes you will see a spindle with grooves of different depths. I personally think these were intentionally turned down smaller in places to increase the wheel:drive ratio but perhaps it was instead the normal wear from a lifetime or two of spinning.
I had not done a Great Wheel video since I was teaching at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and this technique overview was long overdue.
