Record "Hand Knitter", Phase II: garter stitch!
The Record "Hand Knitter" came with two types of combs. One was for stocking stitch, which process is shown here, ua-cam.com/video/CGZPoe8cLP0/v-deo.html.
The other, looking much like a strip of wood with panel nails along the top, was for knitting garter stitch. That is what is shown here.

Переглядів 1636 місяців тому
Along with Charlie, my friend and owner of The Vintage Knitting Machines channel, I am fascinated by knitting machines! Here, I show how to produce stocking stitch on a Record Knitter. Charlie has already documented garter stitch (see ua-cam.com/video/0JMFR9u8YJM/v-deo.html) and I will as well. There are more pictures and closeups of the mechanisms of this machine on my FB page, here, facebook....

Putting a new drive band on a double drive wheel... whee!

Putting a new drive band on a double-drive band wheel. "Replacing the drive band is like trying to stuff a cat in a bag with one hand tied behind your back! Grrrrr.... " Quote courtesy of Linnea Satterfield, who amused herself watching me fight that daggoned string. LOL! Double drive bands make fools of all of us.
Plying: The rock bottom basics
Переглядів 423Рік тому
Spinning 101: the absolute rock-bottom basics of plying 1. You can only spin or ply yarns that will go through the orifice of the flyer and over the hooks of the flyer. If the yarn is too big, it will just tangle. You can ply bigger yarns by hand. 2. These singles were each spun with the wheel going clockwise (to the right). This is called Z twist yarn because if you sliced it and looked at the...

Practising long draw technique. Why? First of all, it will increase your speed on any wheel, so is always a good option for when it is appropriate. Secondly, to prepare for spinning on a great wheel.

Spinning 101: Using a double drive system wheel. Putting the bobbin on the flyer assembly, tightening tension of the drivecord, tying on a leader yarn, threading the leader yarn through the flyer assembly, treadling the wheel, starting to spin, and moving the newly-spun yarn along the bobbin [Done with almost no words I thought the video might be of use to any beginning spinner.]

Well, Alan. You did it to me again. Had to dink around and make two bobbins today.....and I had just swept out the shop last night! Turned out pretty nice for a newbie. many thanks to you and the wife. (and I seem to have noticed a rather "strange" Southern drawl...)

Thanks for the previous reply and have watched the vid once again for more bits of knowledge. I fabricated a flyer "jig" as shown near the end of the video. Crikey! It DOES work and that well. Perhaps the word is gobsmacked, eh? Still would like to see a small vid on it and your 3 point tool as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Really learned quite abit from this video and have saved it for ease of watching it again later. Really sorry to have the video end abruptly and would have liked to watched the jig at work on the lathe. Kudos to you two.

Great tutorial. Under rated video of a lost art. The first bobbin looks old enough to have been turned on a pole or treadle lathe before the craftsman died in a world war.

Harbor Freight has 2 or 3 models to choose from. The 'midi' at just under $300 is good (and you can also get a bed extender to turn longer spindles, legs etc.) Don't forget their discount coupon!

I am absolutely in love with this series! I am watching, taking notes, and still collecting tools for my apprentice workshop. P.s. luckily, I have a number of antique and vintage flyers which need to be replaced (lots to practice with). Thank you so very much 💗👍. P.s. will we be learning for 7 years? 🤓-Miki
