Originally from Hull, England, United Kingdom, Master Turner Alan Dewey is the world's foremost restorer of antique chess sets and spinning wheels. Having studied art as a young man, Alan has been a turner for thirty years. He has extensive experience with European and American antiques. Alan's current focus is on the repair & restoration of fiberarts equipment.
Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA, Milissa Ellison Dewey is PhD-educated in History & also a journeyman woodturner. Working in the fiberarts since 1994, she is internationally recognized for her specialty work in handtools for fiberartists. Milissa also is the fifth fastest spinner in the world, and won using only antique equipment!

Record "Hand Knitter", Phase II: garter stitch!
The Record "Hand Knitter" came with two types of combs. One was for stocking stitch, which process is shown here, ua-cam.com/video/CGZPoe8cLP0/v-deo.html.
The other, looking much like a strip of wood with panel nails along the top, was for knitting garter stitch. That is what is shown here.

Process & trouble-shooting: "Help! My bobbin won't draw the thread on...". Here is the procedure trouble-shooting tips for tying onto the bobbin and tensioning for "normal" z-twist spinning, using the hooks/orifice openings to the left and with the wheel spinning clockwise (to the right).

Putting a new drive band on a double-drive band wheel. "Replacing the drive band is like trying to stuff a cat in a bag with one hand tied behind your back! Grrrrr.... " Quote courtesy of Linnea Satterfield, who amused herself watching me fight that daggoned string. LOL! Double drive bands make fools of all of us.

Thanks for the previous reply and have watched the vid once again for more bits of knowledge. I fabricated a flyer "jig" as shown near the end of the video. Crikey! It DOES work and that well. Perhaps the word is gobsmacked, eh? Still would like to see a small vid on it and your 3 point tool as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Great tutorial. Under rated video of a lost art. The first bobbin looks old enough to have been turned on a pole or treadle lathe before the craftsman died in a world war.
Thank you for the educational video. I wonder wat diameter the ring needs to be. I have a 3D printer so I can make a new ring when I need to change the needles to ribber needles. I bout my machine yesterday.

I had to sell my lathe a few years ago, Now I want to buy another!
Harbor Freight has 2 or 3 models to choose from. The 'midi' at just under $300 is good (and you can also get a bed extender to turn longer spindles, legs etc.) Don't forget their discount coupon!
