Patrick a few months ago I was so disappointed appointed because you weren't posting any videos. Now I'm having a tough time keeping up. I really enjoy them. You do a really good job explaining details. I learned so much. Thank you! And please don't stop again
Matt Minium My apologies for being away for so long. Glad you like the vids. Means a lot!
Impressive that you keep making them thinner. And the two are the same size when finished. And they're really good looking artwork. Thanks for showing.
You're very welcome.
I'm just getting started in the craft. As I used to be around wire welder a I remembered those copper tips that screwed into the gun. They are about 1/4" in diameter. I used a reddish brown color tile left over from when I did my kitchen floor twenty years ago. I broke mine too.
I was recently given six pieces of 12" floor tile. I'm still learning, but your videos have given me the inspiration to give it a try. Thanks for giving us the videos to learn the tools and the techniques.
You're very welcome
I have an extensive background in ceramics. The reason that the floor tile that you are knapping doesn't hold an edge is because the tile is low fire 🔥 earthenware. Basically, the hotter the fireing, the harder the resulting material. Also, the finer the clay, the nicer it will knapp. So what you need is high fire 🔥 porcelain tile.
Ok. Where do you get this tile? What brand names?
Home Depot, Lowes, any tile store. It doesn't matter what brand name, just ask for high fire 🔥 porcelain tile. Alot of it is 1/2". You mentioned that thicker is better. You can buy just one tile. People that sell tile generally know something about what they're selling.
@@glennrich2566 Let's hope. Last time they didn't have a clue a Lowe's (I asked about some other stuff and they looked up the website and gave a blurb that I already read) ... haha
@@KnapperJackCrafty I would most definitely recommend anyone other than Lowes for knowledgeable personnel, especially until you have a good idea what you're looking at. The people at Home Depot are generally much more knowledgeable. The people at actual tile stores are generally the most knowledgeable.
I've watched a bunch of your videos now and it's still amazing the range of materials you can successfully knap into a good point. I'd be ecstatic if I could just manage to make a usable point from ideal material. One of these days, one of these days.
John Ratko I think my next vid will have the first points I made in 2007...
Thanks for showing us the way. That stuff looks like real basalt.
You're very welcome.
pretty cool stuff man, keep 'em comin'! hmmm... floor tile...who'd a thunk it!? LOL!
Excellent job mate
Thanks for the link. It should help a lot. I'm working on a method of holding the flaker a different way. My boney legs can't take much of that.
Randy Harvey Check out Indian Guide's method here:

Great info and as always very well made. I like how you use the close up and tell why and what you are doing. Thanks for the information and most of all the time it take to pass on your knowledge.
Phillip Iacobacci Thanks! Glad you like the videos. I'm a little self conscious about the quality - I wish they were better but I'll have to wait until I upgrade my video equipment. :-)
They are, imho, very well made and full of great stuff. Do not feel that they are nothing but great. Again thanks much..
Phillip Iacobacci Thanks!
How are using the striker
I want to try but i dont have any bopper
have you tried cutting threads and epoxy(lock-tight) the copper into the handle(dowl)? I just briefly tried napping a brown floor tile using variouse grades of hammer stones, it was a very crude first attempt at napping. It was fun and I will enjoy the challenge of aquiring tools and improving. Thank you for sharkng your knowledge!
Yes, I've tried epoxy and it works well for a little while but wood usually cracks or wears out in some way.
Is the little pad a rubber oval mounted (glued) onto a woden oval shape ? I can make one if I knew the details such as size and materials used . Thanks. You are the best knapper I have ever seen on this planet !
triumphmanful Thank you! The pad is made from osage orange wood and black "biker" leather. The leather is used for making saddle bags for motorcycles, for example, and is very tough. I don't use dimensions for these because I make them to feel comfortable. One side of the wood is flat and the other is domed. The dome is about 4:1 width to thickness ratio. The leather is glued on with contact cement.
I need help and advice. How do you make longer flakes with the indirect percussion tool?
You need to practice. :-)
I would really like to see a video with the camera facing you from the front, in order to better see the angle of the tool to the work piece. I like the methods you use but can't seem to make it work for me. Thanks for your efforts.
Randy Harvey Here's a front view. The angle is always changing....And it takes a LOT of practice. :-) ua-cam.com/video/capGa8Mr-mU/v-deo.html
Yeah, I have about 6 of these.👍 I leave the video on as I wonder the house and yard. And your old videos come on after the first one is over. Tv is bad for you so I let the phone watch all these for me.
I see
Patrick I have been watching and learning from you. I have only been knapping about a month. I have been using tile and i have a brown piece of tile that I used for my first ever effort. The point as far as I am concerned is finished for me, I cannot go any farther,. I cannot make flakes long enough to cross over to get rid of the hard surface or the glue pattern on the back. I would like to send this point to you, not as a challenge but just so you can finish it in a video if your interested. I would like it back but that is of course up to you. How do you feel about that ?
That's an interesting idea. The only problem I see is the possibility that I might break your point, especially if it is too long or wide. Points made from tile should be quite narrow because it is very difficult to create long flakes, as you mentioned.
were you using a normal pressure flacker for this, because Im new to knapping rock and harder flints and it seemed like you were hitting the flaker with something
Primitive Projectiles Check out this video for a better view of the technique I developed: ua-cam.com/video/capGa8Mr-mU/v-deo.html
I don’t understand how you thin so effortlessly. My points always stay thick, and they are short and fat.
Practice. 😁
can you show a picture of the tools you use thanks
Do a youtube search for "jack crafty tools".
How do you hold the striker and the hammer in the same hand and hit the striker? Or do you hold it with something else?

Never crossed my mind to try tile. Just got a box of rock I bought from Kinley Coyan yesterday, might keep me busy this summer. Did you get the box?
Shane K Yep, I got your box last night. Thanks! And Kinley's rock is good stuff. Easy to knap.
I'll be knapping the artifacts you sent in an upcoming video. :-)
Looking forward to it, thanks. I've got a friend that know where the source of that Kanawha black is. I'm driving up to WV next month to get a load of it, I'll send you a box.
I got a box full to tile my bathroom, from Amazon, and they are terracotta coloured, I’m not sure what Amazon is like in the U.S
The Terra Cotta tile is not very good, in my experience.
More crumbly?
It is a pity that I do not understand spoken English, but the video information is made good. Thank you for your video. I'm on these rollers. It is particularly important that there is an alternative to silicon, which in our region is not (St. Petersburg) Know how translated question is granite?
kallovertottos Thank you. I think I understand your question about granite. Granite does not work well for flintknapping but you might be able to find quartzite. Some quartzite is good but you will need to experiment. Floor tile is much easier to knap than quartzite, so it is probably the best alternative for you.
Floor tiles and I mean, we called it: Ceramic-granit.Glavnym way - keramika.S granite, gabbro, marble, of course not knepping sdelat.A quartzite rocks pretty good I've seen on Vaalame in Karelia. Kneppingom did not get carried away, held it in the hands of one piece of a palm size. On the tile definitely try, thanks for the idea.
I'm just starting to engage kneppingom. The tool does, looking for material. While the show is nothing but spoiled bottle shards. As soon as something nibudb obtained, I will lay out a video. A few days ago I found a few pieces of quartz.I make one small tip.
kallovertottos Иногда кварц хороший камень для knapping. Я с нетерпением жду встречи с видео!
So much good comments but why so little likes
guys if u enjoyed like the vid
I like the wind noise.
Cool. If I could learn to like wind noise I would be very happy indeed.
What tool are u using and were and how can I get one Allergic Hobbit
Leighton Eppinette You can make them yourself. Kentuckyflintworks sells something similar but not exactly. See these videos: ua-cam.com/video/k0Hou3YkqpIh/v-deo.htmlttps://ua-cam.com/video/capGa8Mr-mU/v-deo.html
