    Vlad the Impaler is NOT Dracula. Bram Stoker never made a single reference to him, someone else made it up along the way and now everyone is running around calling him "the real Dracula." Bram Stoker might have read his name during the research for the book but it's not clear that he even know who he was, let alone let him inspire a character - the title character at that.

    • @wildworld6264
      @wildworld6264  10 місяців тому +9

      Good point. I've heard that Dracula may have been based on a Celtic chieftain named Abhartach. Sorry for the comparison to Vlad; I just thought if I didn't mention him, I would have gotten comments saying "vampires aren't real; I guess you've never heard of Vlad the Impaler" or something.

    • @Carnelust
      @Carnelust 7 місяців тому +6

      That is such a technicality though, it's basically pulling a name from a hat. In the literally sense it's true he as a real life Dracula but I don't think that's a strong enough connection to draw any other comparison between the two. You are right about the name, I don't deny that at all, but the implication of the terminology "real life Dracula" is very different I think, in that it's not what the term implies in common vernacularly

    People have got to understand that just because an animal is potentially dangerous doesn't make them demonic monsters.

    • @iluvyurbles
      @iluvyurbles 10 місяців тому +18

      after all, a bear can be just potentially dangerous and you don't see humans telling people bears are bloodthirsty monsters
      because they aren't
      same should be said for dinosaurs (non birds), snakes, and wolves
      just because they could rip you apart doesn't they will

    • @christopherbailey3547

      There is no "potentially" dangerous, they are infact dangerous. Watch the Egypt video where that russian kid was being thrown around and torn up. What makes them dangerous/monsters is that you can't read them or rationalize with them. They have no remorse for anything they are doing because they aren't even capable of having it because they are a low intelligence species. If there is one swimming around you, there is a 50% chance they can just blitz you and attack and you can look into their black eyes while they are tearing you up have no idea why. No one is saying they should all be purged, but people need to stop with this fake narrative that they are harmless, just because they see youtube videos of 2 blonde women who are "shark experts" swimming around them.

      @psychcowboy1 unless holding up a cross is going to repel a shark, the difference is pretty big, actually. The way people deal with animals on Earth is rather different than how they would go on about dealing with one from hell. Your comment about everything not being black and white nailed it. Unfortunately, it feels like these days most people insist on reducing everything into two-option arguments, which hurts education on topics like this in the long run. Just because you need to respect something and what it can do to you, doesn't mean you need to fear it or that it even wants anything to do with you.

    I do overall agree with your points on this, but I do have a bit of a question. Due to the amount of contact that we humans have with Great Whites, Bull Sharks, and Tiger Sharks, could that be a contributing factor to the "small" amount of unprovoked attacks a year? The reason I'm asking mainly is because with a lot of wild animals that have a high amount unprovoked attacks on humans usually live close to civilian populations. For instance such as the Nile Crocodile kill close to 200 people a year in Africa, one of the main contributing factors are living very close to civilian areas making contact far more frequent, compared to saltwater crocodiles which only have a couple or a few happen a year due to the very limited contact they have with people. Humans overall have very little contact with all Sharks in general especially great whites, tiger sharks and bull sharks. I'm not advocating for sharks as monsters, I'm more advocating for a middle ground when it comes to sharks as I don't really think its a misconception anymore that sharks are monsters infact I believe form what I've been seeing the past few years to it being a bit more the opposite direction. Again I'm in no way disputing your points but I just think it is a factor to be looked at when analyzing shark attacks and I do wish to promote a bit more of a middle ground when it comes to the topic.

      It's worth remembering that the Nile crocodile has shared habitats with humans for as long as humans have existed - and with most of the ancestors of the genus, not just the species. They've had a looooong time to get used to creatures like us as prey animals. We're a lot more like an invasive species in other parts of the globe, and on top of that we've often driven creatures that seemed too eager to either predate upon us or compete with us towards extinction.

I wanted to caution against that specific example, though, because the Nile Crocodile is one of our species natural predators: humans evolved on the continent they're from. The concern is against accidentally creating an apples-to-oranges comparison with one species that is both around humans a lot, and has been for a long time, vs species that aren't around humans a lot, and haven't been until recently. Does that make sense? Like, it could be the proximity thing - or it could be the time thing.

On the other hand: we humans aren't entire rational beings, that accept the the coercion-less coercion of the better argument (I hope I translated that one right from German into English). We tend to have our believes, emotions, prejudices that aren't logical and people have the tendency to cling onto that believe, emotions and prejudices despite seeing the facts. This is why conspiracy theories, myths, racism, sexism and other many more dangerous believes are still around.
    About the "Sharks are swimming doom machines and that's the reason they are monsters" argument. I find this one to be incredible ridiculous. Look at our not fully domesticated house cats: they are walking doom machines for small mammals, birds and many more (animals we often tend to call cute) - yet no one in the world would call their cat a monster. It's friggin nature. Predatory animals need to kill other animals to survive. This isn't an immoral or monstrous act, it's a necessity.

    2:42 I think the person is referring to Ocean Ramsey. 7 months ago, SHARK BYTES channel did a vid called "THIS is Why Ocean Ramsey is BAD for Sharks!"
    In the video, he questions her education background credentials, which she lists as bachelor's degree in marine biology and master's degree in ethology, because he couldn't find her master's thesis online. The comment at this timestamp could be referring to that.
    The comments on the video, guided by the presenter, were pretty resoundingly chiding Ocean as being nothing more than an insta model, swimming with sharks for money, and a phony when it comes to her motives, conservation, and credentials.
    They ignored the fact that she's been swimming with sharks since before social media. The presenter, as you initially did, assumes that most people know sharks aren't man eating killing machines out to eat everything nearby. That incorrect assumption calls his own integrity as a scientist into question and proves that paying a lot for pieces of paper that say you're smart doesn't actually make you smart.
    If he hasn't done any research into what opinions people have on sharks, it's a big assumption and one that comments on any shark vid will dispute. Yet that incorrect assumption was the cornerstone of his argument that Ocean is bad for sharks because she's in the water, "bothering" them and since most people know they aren't monsters, there's no reason to go swimming with them to show they didn't eat her.
    First, if a 16 foot white shark or 12 foot tiger shark doesn't want to be around a person it will leave. If it's annoyed with the humans behavior, it has the capability to make the human disappear. In the water, sharks often have various other sea life around them, harmlessly, from dolphins to other fish.
    Second, as the "of course it's a monster!" comments on this channel show, people DO need to be shown that sharks aren't monsters eating everything nearby. They aren't cuddly puppies and absolutely can eat a human, but most of the time when we're near them (which we usually are unaware, near beaches), aren't interested in us.
    Facts: Worldwide, sharks kill less than 10 humans per year (5 in 2022) out of about 50 bite incidents.
    Humans kill up to 273 million sharks per year ("Sustainability", Porcher, Darvell 2022)
    In light of the actual facts, who ought to be afraid of whom?

    I am a scuba diver and an underwater photographer. I have over 1,000 dives. I do not pretend to be a shark expert. I live close to Volusia county. Most of the shark bites there are of people standing in the water. The water is turbid and small sharks chase bait fish. Sometimes they run into a person’s leg and bite. These bites while serious seem to be unintentional.
    I have seen nurse sharks whilst diving and they are pretty passive but they can get 14’ long. I was on a dive where a diver fed lionfish to a nurse shark. It swam around and was excited and potentially could have bitten someone while trying to get the food.
    I have seen blacktip sharks and reef sharks and bull and a great hammerhead. The thing is that it is very hard to get close enough to a shark to get a good photo. Sharks are wary and will typically swim away.

Mosquitos and Cars are not feared one bit but if a handful of people get bitten by a shark or dragged down by a Humboldt squid there will be monsters. Never heard anyone refer to a land animal this way for some reason. Lions and Bears have big teeth and claws but are still regarded as "scary" and or "dangerous" animals and not monsters. This could be because they are less alien to us more easy to observe. It seems like this rant of mine simply will end in fear of the unknown is greater than the fear of death.......... also ... teeth from the abyss below while flopping about like a helpless land mammal scares me enough not to go there.

    what a shame that people call such beautiful creatures a monster, i am completely scare of them and that's because of the movie Jaws which I saw as a child and that completely traumatize me, heck im afraid of Orcas just because i saw a movie of killer whale targeting people even though I know there's no record on orcas killing people in the wild, still they terrified me, not as much as sharks though. But the fact that they are wild and can potentially kill and eat you, it doesn't make them mounters, it makes them animals and wild so they should be respected, and care for. No way in hell I would do a diving tour with sharks but they are a part of creation and they do share a purpose. other land predators are much more dangerous than sharks and can and have purposely hunt humans and only humans, as some tigers, crocodiles, lions, bears, etc. I don't think unarmed human has many chances of living when entering the environment of one of these wild predators, they will actually target humans and eat you and they will enjoy it. Do i believe them to be monsters? no, I do believe that any animal that fatally attacks a human, or has a record of attacking humans should be put down, yes. I have a strong believe that that individual animal should be put down, I believe we must be weary of wild animals specially predators however predators are not the only animals that can kill you but they are the more likely ones to target you as a meal. Animals are not monsters, they are wild and many of them kill for sustenance, if they don't kill, they don't eat, if they don't eat, they die. But it doesn't make them monster, but yeah they are dangerous, very dangerous. I love felines, i love to watch shows featuring felines, whether they are about tigers, jaguars, lions, or leopards, among a myriad of other species of felines. They look so cute to me because they look and behave just like my house kittens simply much bigger and much more aggressive however i know they are dangerous, i know they'll eat me, and i know there's a place for them. They are not monsters even if they can potentially harm humanity, should the individual or pride that have lost their innate fear of humans and attack us should be put down? immediately no mercy, yes. Should we go after all tigers or all crocs because some rogue individuals have killed hundreds of humans? it's not the responsibility of all their kind to pay for these individuals' acts.

    Just like that scene in Jurassic world with dr Wu and mr mazrani, monster is a relative term, most people only see sharks for what they’ve seen in the media whether it’s films like jaws or news stories of people getting attacked and/or killed so they immediately form an opinion based off these, if monster refers to an animal that can kill you then almost every animal is a “monster” because almost every animal can kill you. Like you said with people claiming that sharks actively hunt humans are morons, more often than not when a shark attacks a human it’s not because they have a thirst for human flesh or something it’s because we’ve decided to enter THERE territory and think we’re untouchable and immortal how stupid does someone have to be to blame sharks for attacking and killing people when the people decided to enter the sharks home and expected nothing to happen? Sharks are beautiful animals who only do what they do to survive which because of us humans they barely can do given we kill millions of them a year so the way I see it, we’re the monsters not them.
