Trolls love the internet because it gives them a platform to spew their hatred anonymously, with no consequences. They can't get away with saying the same awful innapropriate stuff in real life.

Free speech is the right to speak without being jailed by the government. Free speech does not mean that other people have to accept you as a part of their community if all you do is vomit abuse.
If you are banned from a forum for trolling, that's not an infringement upon your human rights - it's the forum administrators doing what is _their_ right to keep their forum clean.
If you are confronted with something that you've said because it was offensive, that is also not an infringement upon your rights. Just as you have the right to speak, everyone else has the right to call you out if what you say is unacceptable.
If you are fired from your job for making unwanted sexual advances towards your coworkers, that is also not an infringement upon your rights. If you are actively sabotaging workplace relations and endangering teamwork and productivity, your boss has every right to replace you with someone more suited to the position.
Free speech is not a free pass to be an arsehole.
Well said.
How about this then... UA-cam suddenly added moderators and one of them doesn't agree with your point of view in this comment, so he decides to remove it, I think you'd be pretty pissed.
In a black and white world this would be true , but people abuse power and can use it to be a massive dick. Sometimes you can be banned simply for not complying with the desired views and ideology of hat group or community , most of the time it's not put on paper or anything , they just make up rules you've violated and get some sort of sick twisted pleasure from asserting their dominance over another human being by being a massive dick or by silencing them and their views. It can be perfectly harmless views , the more dark and messed up views I can understand the moderation of. Its when people who really shouldn't be given power are given power and they abuse it , that's when there is a problem.
How sweet is the low-hanging fruit of using "unwanted sexual advances" as an example? How about when you're fired for presenting a respectful disagreement with a tumblrina's opinions, or when you're fired for telling a "big dongle"-joke without maintaing the 10-yard safety distance from a radfem womanchild?
To whom do you give the job of deciding what sincerely held and respectfully presented opinions are _'offensive'_ and fit for punishment and silencing? And how do you define 'offence' in a way that isn't laughably subjective and prone to abuse?
*These are the actual subject matters,* and repeating cencorship-apologetic rhetoric like "it isn't censorship if the power structure that is punishing you for your scincerely held beliefs doesn't happen to be the government" only makes you sound like you've never read any of the arguments against your position ever.
***** The great thing about this country is that anyone can speak. The bad thing about this country is that ANYONE can speak. Verbal racism and xenophobia? Death threats? Propaganda? Does that seem harmless to you?
I generally find that 99% of trolls can be defeated with utter boredom. Like, if you are trying to troll me and I make it as boring and unpleasant as possible, then you're probably just going to give up and leave. With one or two exceptions, I have been able to combat every troll I've met with this. In some situations it is best to just leave, like if you are in a chat on Twitch or something, just ignore the person. However, there are other situations where you are literally forced to continue talking to them, like if you are in the middle of a CS:GO or Rainbow 6 Siege match and need to talk to your other team mates. In those situations it is best to give simple and short answers that express no emotion at all for the length of time that you are forced to talk to them, be it a few minutes or multiple hours. Sometimes you might not be prepared and will get blindsided, but eventually you will learn to always keep your guard up for someone trying to screw with you. Once you do that, you'll find slipping into your flat, monotone mindset easy and automatic. Get all that down pat and you'll be helping cure the world of trolls one by one!
Just agree with everything they say to the extreme. It's funny watching them try to deal with it.
I'm not going to finish reading it it was to long I got bored on the third line

All this talk about "trolling" and not a mention of "Misidentified as a troll" part. It's easy to label something you don't agree with as "just a troll", even when they make very good points.
Yeah, that's a huge problem as well. This addressed genuine trolls, and it sounded pretty accurate in that regard. However, dehumanization has been well(ish?) studied. By calling someone a troll, they attempt to absolve themselves of any cognitive dissonance that their good arguments cause. How well it works on average I wonder about though.
Even having an opinion contrary to the group can get a huge amount of negative feedback from others agreeable to the consensus.

Trolls can be very sadistic. If they think they are losing an argument with you or they are one of those conspiracy theorist types that are suspicious of EVERYONE and think you are something you are not, they can stop very low in harassing you. Hacking and tampering with your online activities is NOT above them. Beware!
NEVER feed the trolls, if you even slightly think someone could be trolling ignore it and move on. Any response they get will only feed them and cause them to grow and want to post more. If they get no attention of any kind they will get bored and give up.
That is sssooooooo untrue. Trolls hate it when you respond to them.
***** I think part of the reason people continue to argue is that they believe that by continuing to comment, continuing to unravel troll arguments, the troll eventually reaches a singularity where he can no longer argue to infuriate the victim. The victim is clearly no longer infuriated by the troll's comments. Otherwise, the victim would have left the chain eventually.
A second theory is that the victim learns too late in the game that the troll is really a troll. In these cases, arguing the troll is a troll seems like a cop out to avoid addressing the troll's arguments. This means that the victim is forced into a mainstream view of the world, where no beliefs can be challenged. Some people consider this cop out to be twitter logic, in other words, "I don't agree with you, therefore you are a troll." Calling a person a troll could easily be construed as an ad hominim

Your right to free speech is not the right to freedom from consequence of it.
Right. If I don't like someone's speech, I am perfectly within my rights to throw them out of my house, and that goes for any website that I create as well. Claiming that anyone should be able to say anything anywhere is asinine.
If you believe that, then go yell 'Fire!' in a crowded theater.
All constitutional rights have limits and regulations.
Indeed. Death threats, incitation of violence, saying something that might physically hurt someone (eg fooling someone to do something that will harm him or her) is not freedom of speech, but violence.
Besides words can hurt. Emotional abuse is done mostly through words. Bullying (in families or schools) is not only done through physical violence.
People who want to exercise freedom of speech should understand it first.
People have distorted free speech. In any real community you'd be excommunicated at best for some of the shit trolls say.
Corey Doyle Maybe not excommunicated.... but not taken seriously anymore
Once a conversation ends up in using Hitler in an argument, the discussion is ended/ruined.
You know who else would say that?
Hitler.
What about a discussion that is _about_ hitler or something closely related to him :o
Will the discussion end upon the first argument being made?
ErgoCogita LMFAO! That's priceless.
I disagree. Using Hitler in an Ad Hominem ruins the discussion, yes. Just bringing up Hitler, and more importantly his actions, doesn't degrade the discussion by default however. He might one of the most interesting case studies, surely there are points to be made based on him. Whether or not the quality of the dialogue changes is dependent on the quality of the arguments, not on what examples are used.

Whoever trolls trolls, say I! I!
It feels good to see justice served
That's just healthy behaviour and it's called justice!
What about the psychology of people who troll _troll_ trolls? Mind blown, right? :D
I'd say it depends on why you get pleasure from it. Is it hat you have a desire to hurt people, and find trolls to be acceptable targets? Or is because you have a sense of justice, and are trying to make it harder to troll without repercussions. Or maybe even letting them know what it's like?
To be honest, chances are it's a little of 1 and a lot of 2 and 3. And the part 1 isn't really good.
And I say this as someone else who trolls trolls. I've actually gotten a troll to stop trolling over it! Well, except me, who he hates and still trolls.
The worst trolls, are the ones who, unable to defend their argument in a discussion, make accusations of trolling because, they must win at all costs, even to their own credibility.
Spot on. They can also sometimes ban you, as they are often moderators. Or moderasts as I prefer to call them. They are everywhere. I guess if I start some content on UA-cam, I should switch off all commentary 100%. Most of comments, like 99%, is totally useless nonsense anyway as are most videos posted. They bait and provoke people and then issue bans. Folks may end up shadowbanned by the algs just for disagreeing or expressing opinion. I would not want any of that to happen to viewers. The same often happens in live chats. It's better not to read them. I'm still trying to figure out the whole extent of all this situation. It looks like it's getting worse with time. The author of this video, like most people, confuses trolls with haters, pranksters, and people with extreme political views. These are not exactly or necessarily trolls. Sometimes trolls do this: they spam some chat or channel from other accounts, then they report and pretend to help in order to get a mod status and enjoy unchecked trolling and 'spamming their idiotic comments'. They often add a lot of sycophantic stuff to keep the content creators thinking they are good supporting guys who do great job and that they should be mods while in actually they are the root of the problem.

Aiden Pearce you really want to know what goes through our minds? I personally like to know how others think. And why they think the way they do.and usually they are just repeating what they hear or see on tube and don’t actually think about the subject.
My Iq is huge. I am actually very intelligent, so I am fit to say that the thing that goes through a troll is probably hunger. Hunger for existentialism. If they watched Rick and Morty, it'll probably reduce the intensity.

internet trolling is hilarious when they don't go overboard and make threats and stuff.

Yeah, I kinda have like two different kinds of trolling categories. Like there is funny trolling, saying or doing stupid stuff that can be funny and entertaining. Then there are trolls who are just obnoxious, yknow the random people who just join and start screaming slurs, or play really loud noises(after people have yelled at you to stop), and then people who destroy hours of work. Like there is the trolls where everyone is laughing, and then there is the trolls where it's one guy laughing by himself while everyone else is miserable. Like to me trolling can be summed up to a few questions:
1. Is it harmless/easy to undo?
2. Will it's impact be very limited?
3. Will it be appropriate considering the present age group/situation?
4. Do others know that it is a joke?
If the answer to any of these is "no", you probably shouldn't do it. You shouldn't throw around slurs on roblox, that's just messed up, just like you shouldn't destroy someone's stuff it took them days to build, and that one joke shouldn't result in, say, hours of clean-up or repairs. Like a jump scare website is funny to me, that's something that's harmless, haha you scared them, but then if someone joins a server and starts blowing up vehicles or equipment that took people hours to get, that crosses a line.
Brandon Tackett
Matthew Smith Yeah, the age thing goes a long way. Once in elementary school a teacher sent my teacher a jump scare thing- and we didn’t know it was one. Suffice to say my small child brain didn’t take well to it and now I have a crippling fear of being alone near blank television screens and large projector screens. (I’ve gotten much better though)

Too often people accuse a person of being a "troll" just because that person said something they don't agree with, often the comments aren't even all that aggressive. Other times, even though a person says something that seems troll-ish, it might be what that person seriously and honestly believes.
No. I think we all know a troll when we see one and I've never seen someone falsely accused of being one.
i have.
No a troll is always repetitive, and everybody knows it, like is somebody is repetedly stating the same that and being really stubborn abnormally, that's trolling for example
First off, I don't disagree that the term troll is sometimes misused in the way you state. People who are just trying to have a conversation get accused of knowing that they'd get a bad reaction and doing it for the lulz.
That said, honest belief doesn't make something not trolling. The question is whether it was posted to disrupt or to get reactions. I sincerely am pro-choice and a Christian. If I made a Christian pro-choice post on a message board known for pro-lifers just to see their heads explode, I'd still be trolling.
And, of course, not all trolling is aggressive. I know a place where someone trolled about being a quadriplegic, spun elaborate lies that got people to like them, and then posted as someone else saying they died. Still trolling, without being aggressive at all.
good point
I've found that patience is a really good weapon against trolls, if you don't turn angry but rather keep answering them politely and constructively they will generally become mader at you than you are at them and then they come across as the nutjobs. Then again I might only be able to do this since I am autistic and thus have almost infinite patience.
I like that, "Don't feed the trolls."

Really good! Thank you!
I used to actively troll. I was a mean, ugly troll. Then someone found out who I was. And in turn I was exposed, harassed, threatened, my family was notified, my job was notified... my ex husband ended up leaving, his family also turned their back on me, I lost my job, and I hit a depression so low that I tried to kill myself and came very close to success. It's not worth it. Don't be mean on the Internet people. You never know who you are messing with.
Why did you do it though?
How did they find out?
@@Entoni_Spirkoski she never said she did but you right.

"Don't feed the trolls." The internet really is a magical forest full of creatures and an abundance of cats.
When I make an obvious troll post for the purpose of farming downvotes, but the post somehow gets upvoted, then I know I have failed at being a troll.
Its pretty easy to troll when a lot of people don't know how to respond to it and since theres so much bad advice out there. So from somebody who does troll from time to time I will give you some ways to stop trolls:
(Boring but effective ways)
1. quietly get the troll blocked/muted/ignored by as many people as possible (If you announce it the troll will feel like they're winning because they made you mad enough to mute them)
2. get an admin to remove the troll from whatever platform they're on if possible (They might come back but if you keep doing it for long enough most will get bored and move on)
(Fun ways)
3. Repeatedly spam the word "edgy" or something similar and try to get more people to do the same (Throwing random insults makes the troll feel like you're frustrated and don't know what to do about it, and by just spamming the same thing over and over gives the troll nothing new to look at which can bore them.)
4. Spam the troll's dms (If the troll is low level enough to be bothered by dm spamming they will probably start to lose interest pretty quick but this doesn't work with a lot of trolls)
5. Find if you and the troll have any servers for forums in common and try to get them punished on there (This is pretty rare to be able to do this but if you're lucky enough to share another server and the admins of that server are willing to go monitor what hes doing and get him punished on their server it can make the troll feel that there are consequences for trolling and will stop them pretty quick. This can also demoralize the troll quite a bit and might prevent future trolling from them for a while.)

People troll because there's no consequence. Let's face it. For every mean person who has ever trolled to cause harm or because it suits one of the four mentioned characteristics, got reprimanded, the problem wouldn't necessarily go away, just evolve into some unjustified political outcry.

I'm not really a troll but I do love writing obviously stupid/ incorrect stuff on the Internet to get a reaction out of people... Is it because I just crave attention or maybe because I like the fact that my (to me) meaningless and empty words can enrage (or generally cause such a huge reaction in) people ..? (Real question) 👀
Then you are very much a troll, but of a pretty harmless kind :)
I'd say the reasons for it are related to what they talk about in the video, but with a less cruel slant to it.
Not to offend, but it's because you crave the power. It's either because the power you already have in life isn't enough (megalomania) or you do not really have power over aspects (or the whole) of your life.
Power is something I've thought about a lot and it's something everyone needs in their life. We need to have power over something. Whether it's the stereotypical form of power over people or just the fact that you are responsible for....let's say a little brother. That small fact that your little brother wants you and without you being able to drive him from school would make life hard for him, that's all one may need to fulfill the need for power. Some people need more. In the end we need to have power over something, usually this is the reason people cut themselves. It's not always to make the emotional pain go away with physical pain or whatever, it's usually so these people at least have power over something (e.g. their bodies). Suicides kinda follow the same course.
So realized I went pretty dark here, so on a high note: What i've noticed is that power is a good thing. I've seen people who have the simple power of being a parent. These parents know that without them the kid wouldn't survive. So they try to be the best parents they can be. I've seen older siblings being knowing how reliant their younger sibling is on them making them better and more responsible people. The feeling of power on a subconcious or concious level is necessary. But we sometimes feel we are without it. So we do our best to regain power or at least the illusion of power by maybe yelling at our dog, or playing some mean prank, or....being a troll. Being able to affect someone thousands of miles away on an emotional basis while you are having fun is a pretty good way to have power. It feels pretty nice. I've done it.
But hey this is just a minor part of why you might be doing this. There is of course everything the video said, also entitlement, maybe some sort of Me Vs. Them mentality, or something else entirely. I'm a random guy on the internet and you are a random guy/girl on the internet. I can't really ever know.
Edit: thought of another example where power is good. Looke at Donald Trump/Hillary Clinton Vs. Warren Buffet/Bill Gates. All these people have tremondous (apparently I don't know how to spell that word) power but Trump/Clinton want more and you can see the venom and negativity from both of them. While both Buffet/Gates are happy with the power they have, since they are content, they can do stuff to help people. The former still have the need for power, the latter do not. The feeling of power is necessary to do good in the world, and if one doesn't have power, well they will try will try their hardest to get it somehow even if it's enraging internet stragers.
We can't answer that for your (Although some armchair psychologists will surely try).
You're going to have to use this thing called 'introspection'. You can start by thinking on the implications of one of your hypothesis being true and then judge if those implications fit your profile.
Example, if you go with 'craving attention' then judge if that is true. Do you tend do behave in any other attention begging ways? Do you 'suffer' in any way when you are not getting the attention you crave? Do you feel a 'need' for people to acknowledge you? etc... If these are true then 'attention seeking' might be one of the reasons you do it (though not necessarily the only one).
Troll!!!

Both Hilary and especially Trump have a lot of dissociative personality traits, Trump is a Meglomaniac/Narccicist as well
I don't see neither Buffet or Gates having these

This was a very concise and enlightening video about online trolls. I sometimes engage trolls for my own amusement, trying out-troll the troll, I suppose. Anytime there is anonymity, there will be those small-minded, scared, weak and intellectually stunted individuals who will use the forum for trolling, disregarding the subject matter at hand entirely for their own narcissistic pleasure. This video, however did fail to address one item. A item that I am sure we are concerned with; How does this relate to butt hair?
Isn’t SCi-Show referring to their fairly constant comments from a user who is obsessed with the topic? -Plus the sci-show style is aimed at including younger viewers. And this reference would have had 13 y o me laughing hysterically...

Bullying is awful, but it will not go away, so perhaps it's better to just learn how to deal with it and grow a thicker skin. That way we retain the freedom to speak our mind (even if people don't like it).
that's exactly what should be done.
That's true 99% of the time.
Then you hear about the real crazy examples. Like your ex setting up a fake porn web site and putting photos of you on it, and emailing your boss. You end up fired and have no legal recourse. Then you can't get another job because you google your name and guess what comes up?
A thicker skin is needed for many oversensitive people out there I completely agree but sometimes the trolls can go to far by taking a recent wound like mass shooting and dead loved ones and that is when it becomes not very good to have them around.
Amanda Lee Dube yeah, like those feminists who try to get people who don't agree with them fiered by telling their bosses that "they are rapists".
just respond to stupid shit by only saying "k"
you kids really missed all the fun in the 90s. lord.
No kidding!! My first computer was a TRS-80 that I wrote a BBS for and ran it on a 300 baud modem, 1 user online at a time.... circa 1985'ish.
Same here!
Ah, the classic, "back in my day the world was better." Statement. Everyone always thinks the time they grew up in was better than any other time period because it's when they had the most fun, or sometimes the least fun.
Not me, I grew up in the 80's and 90's and I still think they pretty much sucked balls.
I'm from the Balkans and I'm kinda glad I missed it
I've been on the internet since I was 15 years old, and in all that time I've never had any problem knowing that I was interacting with other actual people, so this video saying that trolls supposedly don't think of their victims as real people sounds like a lie the trolls are telling to excuse their behavior rather than a fact, especially when there's really no clear distinction between a troll and a cyber bully since they're often the same thing, and cyber bullies like to tell people to kill themselves--even when they go to the same school as their victim and are well aware of that fact.
So I find it extremely hard to believe that the majority of these people don't know perfectly well they're hurting other people, they're just socio/psychopathic enough not to care when they think they can get away with it.
Its like when a guy asked a marine what did it feel to kill a human, and then he responded by... i dont know i only kill comunist... in the sence that they know what they did but its much easier to think of the other participant as deserving of whatever you are doing to them or not think of them as humans as you, that way you aboid all feelings of guilt or responsability
@@Sesshounamaru7 has a good way of looking at it but it's important to remember that sometimes, at least in the case of trolling and probably in the case of the marine, the hate/trolling/attack is sometimes only considered after this separation between person and username. That's not to say that's what always happens but it definitely happens
Also, this only pertains to hateful trolling. As the guy stated some times pain isn't the desired result personally, I prefer utter confusion or mild annoyance, something I hope the victim can later laugh at due to the absurdity of it.
And then sometimes it's literally just roasts "'Cause that's what the kids are into these days" but fr those are just a way to bid for "InTeLlEcTuAl SuPeRrIoRiTy" in arguments.
I remember one time on youtube, I was trolled on the subject of mental health. The troll tried to bait me by stating that all people who have mental health issues should be euthanized. I quickly pointed out to him that his outlook is not that of a person who is mentally stable & he should voluntarily take his own advice. The world certainly would not miss him. Most trolls are not the brightest of human beings. They seem to me to be like teenage bullies who are even more cowardly because of their anonymity. They seldomly are up to speed on whatever topic is being discussed as their goal is not to have any form of rational strategy on the topic, but to just irritate others. What sad & lonely people they must be. 😱😢❗️
Most grow up and cease this behaviour. Thing is, humanity keeps making new teens to replace the old ones. Same stuff, different pile.
guys what do u think, flat earthers.. are they trolls or do they really believe?
Believe, haters gonna hate
You'd be surprised in what people believe in. i.e. Invisible people RIP.
They're not trolls, they're just uneducated
Probably a mixed bag.
As every answer in psychology goes: it's both. I think I heard somewhere that one flat earther website started as a joke but you know Poe's Law, so people who believed joined in then the circlejerk began and those who were sorta in denial of a spherical earth found others to confirmation bias the hell out of them. And then there's still the trolls within these flat earther blogs who just incite more and more of this belief throwing in conspiracy theories that they themselves don't believe but the flat earthers take it and again confirmation bias the hell out of it.
