  • US athlete Tommie Smith attained international fame when he gave the Black Power salute at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, 55 years ago.
But as the exclusive BBC Archive clips in this new series reveal, that protest came at a heavy cost.
The Black Power salute, as it came to be known, was a defiant statement against the systemic oppression of black people in the US and marked a defining moment in the history of civil rights activism.
But their use of it on 16 October 1968 came at great personal cost to the athletes involved.

@@honourthefire9182 ; Two Black ladies gave the same 'power salute' . I took them to be either their wives, friends or girlfriends -come to think of it, they also may have been athletes. It was not a very fun Games -200 students were shot in the main square with 50 caliber machine guns, the day before I arrived

People idolize celebrity and success until the celebrants talk about rights. Rather than engage in good debate and conversation, many lean towards a "don't say" mentality even today. If you don't fit the mold, you don't have rights to talk about your experiences. Shut and sing...we didn't pay to hear your troubles...blah, blah. Now DEI is a mortal sin. Everyone's rights are on the table, VOTE!

Going to Heaven is simple. All you must do is realize you are a sinner in danger of hell and believe that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose again. When you believe this and make Jesus your only hope for going to Heaven, you are saved from hell. God promises everlasting life as a free gift to those who believe Jesus paid for all their sins. Our good works do not earn us Heaven. The Bible says “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” Titus 3:5. In conclusion, just believe that all your sins are paid for by Jesus Christ and make Him your only hope of going to Heaven.
