- In 1968 there was a powerful moment of protest at the Olympic games when two winners put on black gloves to protest what was happening in the country during the civil rights era. Most people don’t know the story of the silver medalist, Peter Norman.

“In an act as appropriate as it is overdue, the Australian House of Parliament is issuing an official state apology Monday to the country’s late, great sprinter Peter Norman. Norman won the 200-meter silver medal at the 1968 Olympics, but that’s not why he’s either remembered or owed apologies. After the race, gold and bronze medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos bowed their heads and raised their fists on the medal stand and started an international firestorm. Many see the iconic image and assume Norman was just a bystander to history, or as he would joke, “the white guy.” But he was standing in full solidarity with Smith and Carlos, wearing a patch on his chest that reads, “Olympic Project for Human Rights.”

Norman decided not to be part of the three in the statue. He wanted people to be able to stand there and experience the feeling he had.
People like him setting standards for the rest of us to live meaningful and intentional. Following a crowd to get around isn’t enough for a humankind. Thank you Peter Norman 🙏
I have used this as an example with my children (both pretty grown up now) 1) try and do something so awesome you get your face on banknotes (a long shot I admit) 2) if not that make damn sure you are on the right side of history , you want to be like this man. Though having my genes they will never run really fast.
This shows how evil people can be but most of all thatt there's faith in humanity

Peter should have run for South Africa following that debacle, just hope the names of the rat committee are not forgotten.
It was a bad decision for him.
As an indigenous Australian I only found out about his story around 12 years ago. Im ashamed that he is not celebrated more widely by our country. A quiet hero who stood tall when lesser people would have stood down. His parents and his children are blessed to have him as he was blessed to be raised with such high moral values.
As an Australian, it makes me ashamed what was done to Peter Norman. It all happened before I was born, but our country had a disgraceful "White Australia" policy, which will remain an embrassment for a long time to come. I must say however, that while our government ostracised him, our athletes never did. He was revered amongst all of us, and hopefully our love to him outweighed what our stupid government represented
