  • Fallout is the paragon o Post-apocalyptic themed RPGs. Underrail, Atom RPG, Encased and just about every other RPG that has come out in the last 20 years (including Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3!!) look up to this classic for various reasons. Along with Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment, it is one of the three most influential rpgs of all time.

The original F1 and F2 are, for me, the best games I've ever played. I agree with everything, but I feel the music does deserve a 10. It makes the game one of the most immersive to this day and I do listen to it when falling asleep - so much dark ambient has been inspiried by it!

I remember my "Casino Royale" character, that had gambling as a tagged skill. With high LCK, AGL, INT, you get the James Bond archetype. Imagine my shock, that Gambling was not a lame duck skill, but actually useful and a pillar of the build!

I still have not finished Fallout. I got physical copies almost fifteen years ago when I was a teen, but I think I gave up after you meet Lou Tenant (vague to avoid spoilers). But the voice actors they got for Fallout-holy cow. To name just a few-Tony Shalhoub, Richard Dean Anderson, Brad Garrett, David Warner, Frank Welker, and-in my opinion one of the most recognizable voices ever-Tony Jay. There's nothing quite like quality voice acting in a '90s video game.

There's also a fan-made mod called "Fallout 1.5 Resurrection" which is set between FO1 and 2. It's a full campaign and really well done (and tough). I highly recommend it, it runs on the FO2 game. The original Fallout is still one of my favorite RPGs to this day, clunkiness and all.

Worth playing in 2023? HELL YES. First Fallout games and New Vegas would be worth playing in 2077! And beyond... if there will be beyond, heh.
Fallout 2 was my first RPG ever back in 2000. Was kinda shocking experience to young guy who never played anything except some NES action-platformes, early FPS (we called 'em 3D Actions at the time) and couple of point & click adventures. Still one of my absolute favs and always will be.

I have to say that Fallout looks and feels *really* old these days. So much that it actually adversely affects the experience. But it is still a masterpiece and I wish it would get some polish in its visuals and controls but stay otherwise completely unchanged. "You get 1000 xp for sneaking into the military base without getting caught". I wonder how many other players got that one back in the day, given that "wasting" points on sneaking wasn't exactly popular. But the game not only made it possible to be a sneaky character and be rewarded for it here and there, no, it explicitly acknowledged that my playstyle was valid with comments like this. I only recall one other game that did things like this, and it was a game from the same developer: Arcanum. Too bad that one hasn't aged well either.

1:20-ish Thank you. This is why despite my love for the series, I don't consider the Final Fantasy (or even most JRPGs) as RPG. Not on that explanation, anyway.
Also not sure if you did this on purpose, but I always felt that some of the beats of Fallout 2's main story are similar to JRPGs. You're the chosen one of your village, you have the blood of a special person from the past, you're out on an adventure to save your village, you unravel the stories of the old and more advanced past, your village got attacked and the stakes goes higher, the main villain is bent on destroying humanity, and so on. I had a thought to add a JRPG-style, happy-go-lucky map theme to lampoon those similarites. Of course, these are not exclusive to JRPGs but compared to other Fallouts and even to big names of cRPGs like Baldur's Gate and The Elder Scrolls, these beats are less close to those games than to Breath of Fire or Golden Sun.
Or perhaps because this game was one of the first cRPG that I played after growing up playing JRPGs.

fallout 1&2 changed the way I played RPGs for the rest of my life. I wiped out a village and had a integrity check in real life and said no I am not going to do that anymore. Yes! This! Respect for you my frend! This is how i play most my RPG games. I RP a lot and i try to play immersively as if i was in that world making real decisions. I mostly end up going the chaotic good character in my games and do the right thing, try to help everyone that i like and sprinkle in the occasional mayhem here and there, when the situation calls for. But i always try to make my decisions according to the greater good. When you do that you can;t always save everyone and some people will hate you, but at the end of the day, if you are ok with the choices you made and you try to positively influence the majority of people, then i think that is a good playthrough.
I tried to do the evil playthrough in games like Skyrim, but then i always end up as a mostly good character anyway so i just gave up on that silliness and now i just play as a morally good character that is not afraid to piss off some people to make some tough decisions. I just can't play a bad guy or asshole character in games. My moral compass wont let me.
I usually play RPGs once or twice, so i think how is the best way to progress through those games with the proper decisions and just live with the consequences.
      TY for sharing!

@@mancamiatipoola wow nice to see others having similar experience. Even in Xcom turn based strategy l would watch playthroughs where players would create human bombs to take out the aliens and just buy more soldiers to replace. I just couldnt do that, felt cheap and a waste of time versus careful planning and valuing the time and training put into each soldier. i remember one mission I was frankly out gunned and took on a bigger ship loosing a couple of soldiers. I decided to withdraw the survivors back to the sky ranger and gtfo. At least some survived to fight another day.

Oh yes, dont even get me started on getting attached to virtual characters that have the personalities of a dead moth. In games like X-com the soldiers have no dialogue and just spout a few generic lines, but the fact you can customize them so much makes you become attached to them, just cuz they look cool now.
Im playing Baldur's Gate 3 now and that game really knows how to get you invested in the story and characters. I play that very immersively and i try to be a decent and wise leader to the party of companions that eventually gathers around you. To say that you get attached to some characters in that game is an understatement, especially when you see them in the badass gear you put them in, during conversation cutscenes.
If you haven;t tried it yet, i totally recommend it. It is truly one of the best RPGs of the decade.

This series of games in the Fallout tactical RPG genre are definitely a masterpiece and a product of their time. In the 90s it was still the wild west of the gaming industry without any clearly defined genres, fanbases, trends and big companies. Every video game was a new experience and most people kids not quite used to mature video games like this one. I played it for the first time in the early 2000s and then i played it again in the 2010s. For me this game was a hit and miss because it demanded a lot of time which i didnt have at the time due to life and work. I think i missed the age boat on this game becaues when i was in my 20s i could not afford a PC and in my 30s i no longer had the time or the patience to give this game a good try.
As an adult gamer i have to say i am spoiled with good UIs and clear quests and objectives and i simply do not have the time to follow a game for which you have to do some extensive research and follow outside guides just to figure out a quest line. I also dont have the time anymore to invest in learning such an extensive game, but i would love to see a remaster at some point.
But i will still remember this game with nostalgia and will always appreciate it's charming graphics and the unforgettable UI blip sounds which are a hallmark of these Fallout games.
TY for a great review as always.

Voice acting everything is too much costly, on every regard, and even on biggest releases we see that lines are removed due to the voicing everything responsability design choice.

I have way more problems with it but i still consider a solid game
Flaws i have with it are with how unbalanced some skills are such as Big guns being quite bad aside from the flamer, first aid being inferior to doctor or outdoorsman being outright useless, its still possible to finish the game with any of those, but its definitively a handcap.
I also dislike how theres no restrictions for resting aside from a few areas in which you cant, which lead the player to restore HP constantly without having to care about resources
You can also steal the weapons from almost every enemy in the game, meaning you can exploit it constantly, making combat encounters pathetic (something they fixed at fo2)
The economy sucks and itemization isnt all that great, usually lacking great economical goals and loot being trivialized sometimes by the fact you already having acess to better equipment progression-wise (for example, you can get The ap pistol in the hub, same place you get acess to a .223 which makes the AP one useless)
And yes, writing feels a bit clunky sometimes, but the endgame aged really damn well.
Only thing i would disagree with you is that no game in the series did companions justice. Atleast if we are mentioning dlcs
Dead money crew is just way too fleshed out to the point i had to reset the dlc from the start in order to save dog/god, i really felt like i knew those people and this is rare coming from fallout.

Reality: the game can be completed using only 2-3 viable builds.

Please create a build that you think is impossible to complete the game as and I`ll do it.

It is a myth indeed. This time a played it with Albert... without modifying ANYTHING and I beat the game just fine. The first time I had s super-duper-noobishly build spreading point like a noob to "cover everything" and I still managed to beat it and the second time I went for a min-maxed (10 luck 10 agility 10 intellect) and beat it just fine.

Yeah HTH and melee are very tough builds. You better have speech to go along with those if that's your primary way. I would hate to take on the final boss with those, but it might be doable on normal. I think we tend to think of builds like as in modern games where you stick to the same build the entire game. I don't think the original developers thought that way. I believe you were intended to go HTH or melee in the beginning when ammo was scarce and eventually graduate to small guns, energy weapons, or big guns. The first Fallout in particular seems to steer you from hth/melee to guns to energy weapons since regular guns do lose their punch by the end where the turbo plasma rifle is like the best weapon. Late fallouts fixed this somewhat. I'm somewhat okay with this. I mean, how realistic is it to be going up to a guy with power armor and a rocket launcher and punching him to death? I think games like Fallout 4 went too far the other way and made HTH and melee too powerful. Fallout 1 forced you to adapt to your current environment rather than be a one trick pony.

      @@jimmym3352 Not that hard
You probably think it would be a tough battle because the master has strong attacks with its laser weapons and stuff
But that doesnt end up being the case because at the cathedral you have tesla armor which give you 90% laser DR, you basically dont take damage if you dont receive a crit, considering you are playing melee you will have higher endurance anyways so not even crits Will kill you
Then if you are doing fast shot + HtH you can do shit like hitting the master with a powerfist 12 times in sequence (since AP can get reduced to cost 1 each hit)
I literally made a character with high sequence + fast shot +HtH + slayer one time and i was getting like, 50+ damage at each hit with my power fist and two turns one after another.
      You become god
