    Flowers to Cate, an actors actor, who does not shy away from acting flawed and unlikeable characters (see Blue Jasmine). But man oh man, for sheer rewatchability and entertainment I will go with Michelle Yeoh in EEAAO, where she acts a feast of characters and makes it looks effortless. For what it's worth, Michelle, I am rooting for your Oscar this year.

      I really hope that Michelle wins the Oscar, because unfortunately it would most likely be her only chance to win since she probably won’t get another role like this again. Good roles for Asian actresses in Hollywood are almost nonexistent and the industry hasn’t changed enough to feel confident to say that another great role for Michelle is around the corner and she will certainly get another chance at the Oscars.

    I do think it's time for cinephiles to re-examine what types of performances they value more over others. We have nearly 100 years of awarding deeply dramatic and tortured performances, many of which are technically perfect but often diminish in cultural significance as time marches on. When watching Blanchett in Tár, yeah, she's brilliant and delivers precisely what audiences have been conditioned to believe is Oscar-worthy. But the film itself serves merely as a temple to house her pristinely dark performance in. The rest of Tár fades into the background around Blanchett's performance. Yeoh's performance in EEAAO, however, anchors the entire film and keeps us grounded in something that could have turned out to be a glorious, unwatchable mess that dwarfs any one of its individual parts. But even with all the altnerate timelines, outlandish characters, costumes, frenetic editing, and tonal incongruencies, Yeoh still stands out and helps to bring all of these disparate parts into clear cohesion and makes it look effortless. Making a performance look effortless is not an easy task. Yeoh's Evelyn is just as rounded and complex as Blanchett's Lydia while also getting to be funny and energetic in addition to being dark and somber.

      I think it is a generational issue.
      For the more "mature" audience, the rapid changing scenes may be a bit weird or discombobulating;
      when asked, even Ang Lee stated EEAAO was "too fast" for him.
      But for young kids, accustomed to video/online games, the film is normal for them.
      I love the movie for it's message of kindness - too rare in cinema.

    TÁR and EEAAO are sort of inverses, and very similar because of that. TÁR is serious and austere, like Miramax-era prestige Oscar bait; EEAAO is wildly irreverent, rude, goofy, and proudly genre/multi-genre. (Both could be called "art house.") The difference is EEAAO doesn't work if you don't ultimately believe Evelyn Wang, whose screen time is shared by an ensemble. TÁR relies on one character you neither have to love or hate, and Blanchett gets an abundance of screen time to make her. I doubt the Daniels foresaw the awards future of the film, but Todd Field quite explicitly saw this as a vehicle for Blanchett. From first base, EEAAO sort of handicaps Yeoh for the Oscar whereas TÁR directly positions Blanchett for it. I think, more than race and age, that should be factored in; Yeoh basically used EEAAO to project an unlikely mega-watt star quality in the same way she did with that first commercial.

    I absolutely loved the performance of Cate Blanchett in Tar, it is, in many respects the best performance of the year, regardless of gender. However, Michelle Yeoh's performance is transformative in how it not only is great techniquely, like Blanchett's, but in how it makes the viewer FEEL as part of a larger universe. Cate makes you reflect inwardly, Michelle makes you reach out to the expanding universe searching for your small part in it. Both are magnificent performances that would win in any Oscar season, in my opinion, so it's a shame that both are in this season...damn you COVID for causing this...but I am rooting hard for Michelle and, while understanding a possible Blanchett win, I WILL be very disappointed if Yeoh doesn't win this year...and I think Cate feels the same.

    When ever I see people saying Head they want Cate to win but Heart they want Michelle to win, I think they forget that we are judging an art performance, not a science homework problem. For an actor to make you fall in love with the performance so much, require so much skills and raw emotions, even more than dramatic acting.
    When you say on technical level Cate is better, it is a bias toward dramatic acting. Michelle in Everything literally combines action acting, comedy acting into her dramatic and character acting, not to mention balancing all that in a large ensemble cast .
    This is why I root for her to win, not because of race or overdue, but for the multi-technique and brilliant-in-many-way performance of Michelle. (And tbh haven't you guys get bored when the best acting win always dramatic ones. Like there are so many other branches as well, give them recognition. Stop genre bias)

I absolutely hate the bias against genre films like horror, comedy, sci-fi, and action films that the Academy has and the performances from those genres can be just as good as the typical “Oscar-bait” dramatic/ biopic performances. There is something stunningly wonderful with Michelle Yeoh’s performance in this film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that has live in my memory as fresh as the day this brilliant film has been shown on theatre. How she exquisitely observed these different characters with such grace and precision. I’m at a loss of words to accurately describe her distinctive style of cinematic achievement. It might be just me, but I’m quite skeptical of Cate Blanchett’s movie “TAR”. I thought it was a heady mixture of boredom and mediocrity. My instincts had me avoiding it. However, I thought Cate Blanchett was so convincing as a renowned conductor/musician Lydia Tar. But since Cate already have received many recognitions (Oscars) in the past, I have got to hand the best lead actress to Michelle Yeoh’s one of a kind performance. My observation of her character in the movie seems exceptionally tour de force!…I know how presumptuous of me to say but my personal opinion has no place in this and it would not convince some voters to consider and acknowledge her work as the best performance this year. But I’m hoping for the best outcome that she would receive her very first Academy Awards trophy.

Since I saw Yeoh's performance in EEOA I was rooting for her and I won't stop no matter what happens next March 12. #YeohForTheWin

    I completely agree. When is Michelle Yeoh going to be in this position again? There’s an urgency here.
    And despite its nomination count, I don’t think it wins Picture. I think older voters see it as too much of a “genre” film that is going to win elsewhere, including Actress and Supporting Actor. And Banshees and The Fabelmans are nipping at its heels. And giving Director to Todd Field might be a way to give Tár something. Basically, it’s whether or not The Academy goes all in on EEAAO, or spreads the love around.

    I recall when EEAAO first came out in theatres, I was one of the few audiences that occupied the almost empty theatre. So I thought, perhaps, the show's materials were kinda advanced for the mainstream. Glad that EEAAO got to where it is today! Would love to see Michelle Yeoh win the award. but I've also been told that GG winners don't usually go on to win the Oscars. Still looking forward to the show on 12 Mar, nonetheless.

    I love this video so much and love your call for Michelle to win the Oscar. It’s the day after the BAFTAs, and I am worried! I know Cate was gonna win there, but with SAG voting not ending until Friday, I am so worried Michelle won’t get SAG which would not be good. I am hopeful for Brendan Fraser and Michelle Yeoh, but Michelle is the one I really want to see. As you said, it is a chance for us all to see history made. I also agree that Cate has two Oscars and will have many more chances for that third (and probably fourth) Oscar, and Michelle’s chances for future nominations and a win are far less likely. I hope Oscar voters embrace her narrative and I say that not to diminish her beautiful performance, because it is worthy of that Oscar. Come on, voters! Do the right thing and give Michelle the win!

    Cate pretty much played a dark version of herself (artist, master of her craft, powerful beyond the men around her, well respected,...). On the other hand, Evelyn Wang could not be further away from Michelle, on top of the fact that the movie concept is completely surreal. Michelle's performance was so believable as an old immigrant lady who failed in life that it grounded all the other bizzare aspects of that movie. In Tar, everything came together like an orchestra to support Cate's performance. In EEAAO, Michelle's performance shone despite all the noise, and even calmed the noise
