NFL on CBS a couple days ago was partially sponsored by this movie. The announcer at the start of the game said the broadcast was brought to us by, "Joker Fo-lee-Ay." Wish I had it recorded
I was so confused in the run up to release about why the director and cast were so set on trying to pretend it wasn't a musical. If you didn't want it to be a musical, why did you make it a musical?!?
rarely go to the theater anymore so wasn’t planning on going to see this, but your input just confirms that waiting for streaming is the choice to make
I never ever let critical and audience reception determine if I'm going to see a movie. But after how much I loved the first Joker, and after that I heard this movie takes place in a courtroom mixed in with musical numbers that don't even feel passionate about being musical numbers, this sequel just sounds like a huge mistake and I won't be paying to watch this in a theater at all. I'll catch it on HBOMax sometime when it is free.
I had faith that Joker Folie á Deux was going to be one of the best movies of the year, but... after I heard a lot of rave reviews since Venice... I don't know.
I’m getting tired of all the hate on this movie. So interesting you said after 30 minutes it crumbles. I had the exact opposite reaction. 40 minutes in I was worried and not getting it, and then it all clicked for me. All I could think is how daring and bold these choices are. Joaquin Phoenix goes to a place that no actor does. To put yourself out there this much, even to embarrassment, in incredible and needs to be recognized. This is acting at its absolute best in my opinion. Cast was great, visually it’s stunning with the sets and makeup. Arthur needs to sing to express himself, got get out of his horrible life. He thinks he’s talented but he’s not. This to me is the point. I had so much fun with the musical elements. It was extremely unusual, uncomfortable and very bold. I love that they took these chances and for me it worked beautifully. I just wish more would see it this way. This was a very memorable film. It’s getting too much negativity. It needs to be celebrated. It won’t get much at the Oscar’s but it should. Joaquin is even better in this than the first one. Awards are way too political. This movie deserves so much more. I liked this better than the first. Very enjoyable.
Lady Gaga is not a good actress, i'm sorry. she tries to lose herself in her roles, but i've never been blown away by a performance. in all the clips i've seen of her in the film, she's not embodying anything remotely Harley . Can't hold a candle to Margot ... AN ACTUALLY GOOD CRAZY TALENTED ACTRESS. she was a bad choice.
Also Margot Robbie’s Harley is existed in another universe, how tf she would’ve appeared in this universe? Not to mention her version of Harley simply wouldn’t have work in this universe AT ALL
Gaga changed after telling fans to love themselves 'Born This Way' - then goes and gets 9 procedures via plastic surgery. She is so "Hollywood,".so overly glorified. Don't like her at all in films. an actress??? Her face can't even move!!
Phillips is not a great director. There's no reason to think he could pull this off. At least that's what I thought going into the cinema. I was right!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember at some of the first test screenings - people were saying lee was in it too much and was the main character more than joker was. I imagine they decided to cut some of her scenes but went overboard! I'm really disappointed this movie isn't going to be good , been looking forward to it for years!
I really really enjoyed this movie a lot, but I can see why other people wouldn't. It didn't really feel aimless to me. I thought Gaga was given enough to do but don't really wanna discuss here without spoiling her part of the story. Definitely agree with the take overall now that this likely wont be in Best Picture. I genuinely think Gaga could still get in the supporting category, especially if some critics groups pull her up: early predictions: cinematography, sound, best supporting actress, best costume design, best original song
Yeah, pretty much what I expected when I saw the trailer. Was hoping for something more explosive and colorful (but like, in a sickening way). And something massive, like the Bane blowing up Gotham shit. Oh well.
I’m getting tired of all the hate on this movie. So interesting you said after 30 minutes it crumbles. I think fans wanted more than Harley. Perhaps a play on Bruce Wayne or even another villain. The trailer does nothing for me and, I suspect, won't do much for most. Loved the first one - a true work of art. Derivative in the best way.
More than a disappointing sequel, to me is a case of a wholly unnecessary one. Although the presence of Lady Gaga made me believe in the possibility of an interesting new story, the idea that a sequel was an error never left me.
Thank you so much for your review Brian. It opens next Friday here in Spain, and I will be there, although, I didn't love Joker , just Phoenix performance , and I suppose you are right about this one too. Thank you again .
I know a lot of people compared Lady GaGa to Madonna, especially at the start of her career. There’s one thing GaGa definitely has over Madonna, though: at least she can act. Even in the worst movies she’s in, you can tell she’s at least trying. Madonna’s best acting in her career seems to be more accidental than anything.
Plus, how is Harley Quinn older than Batman? Batman is 12 years old in the first one, and now Harley Quinn is 30 to 40? This movie doesn’t take place long after.
it's kinda around the same reviews from the first one, tho. the first Joker also got very mixed reviews. these are the critics sayin it's bad, it ain't even out yet. (til tomorrow). I thought the same thing n 2019, I thought I wudnt like it, n I was wrong I was kept entertained throughout the whole film. I luved it. u might like this one.
Lady Gaga is basically the only reason I've been waiting for this movie to come out, and it's sucn a disappointment we don't have that much of her in it. Especially given the fact that the trailer and the whole marketing campaign focused on both of them as lead characters. Planning to see it this weekend anyway. Hope it will be good anyway, but the chances are low now.
A few musical numbers would’ve been great , but there were more in the first 30min than they should’ve had in the whole film!! SPOILERS!! When he broke out after the bomb I woke up and thought FINALLY, here we go!!! And then … nothing!!! 🤦🏻♀️
So sad to hear this about Joker: Folie a Deux. I was really looking forward to Lady Gaga's performance. Not sure how I feel about this being a musical. It seems very discordant with the original Joker's vision. I'll have to go see it just to feel the jarring confusion at the director's choices.
Hearing that Gaga isn't in it much and is basically but on the backburner for most of it is really disappointing. Like you said you have Lady Gaga and they don't utilize her and her talents is inexcusable. Also I love musicals but this sounds more like Nine than Chicago. I hope Gaga has at least one musical showstopper. I guess Ill see.
This feels like a joke on the audience. Right? When part 1 came out they were all “it’s not a glorification of violence and mental health it’s not a rally cry for incels” but it was both of those things. So maybe Phoenix and Phillips said “lets just take the money and stick it to em”
Pheuwww, this entire situation is going to require intensive study. 🤔🤦♀😮💨 Shhhhhiii, this may very well jump some thesis's ya know?? I mean, tbh, the whole state of cinema needs a deepdive and the subsequent restructuring!! 😫🙌
Hi Brian. Can you please stop reading reviews before you watch a movie, so your reviews are fresh? I am afraid you are just repeating what other critics have said.
Most anticipated movies of 2024 have been disappointing, meanwhile movies that were on nobody's radars are doing well example the substance
This one isn't surprising; Joker wasn't very good.
Take Joker and Harley: two of the wildest characters in cinema. Then make them sing and talk for 2 hours. Genius!
I wouldn’t mind that, if the singing actually helped tell the story and wasn’t just there for no reason….
In my opinion, this film didn't need a sequel, much less being a musical. I'll be surprised if it does well at the box office
or anymore Batman slash joker projects. yea, the first Joker was a pleasant surprise. Well...back to the SUBSTANCE!
.....always back to The Substance!
Lmao

*The Hangover* 🤝🏻 *Joker (2019)*
Should never had a Sequel
One thing I remember the most about the first movie has to be Hildur Guðnadóttir’s haunting score.
I was so confused in the run up to release about why the director and cast were so set on trying to pretend it wasn't a musical. If you didn't want it to be a musical, why did you make it a musical?!?
The most fun I'm having with this film is the way people are attempting to pronounce its title..😂
it's jus the director tryin to sound smart, like this profound or sumthin.
looks easy enough. Folie like Mick Foley and deux(two)
@@mike04574 Thanks to your high school French.. Watch a few videos, and you'll get my point…🤣.. Foley…Flu-ley, Flow-ley, Fool-ley… etc

Warner Bros. expectations for Joker 2: Oscar wins
Reality: Razzie awards sweep 🤭🤭
Bros talking like Megalopolis, Madame Web, and Borderlands aint gonna pull up
@@ricardoediza2690 oh, don't worry. All those you mentioned will get major Razzie awards alongside Joker 2 🤭🤭
I can see Joker 2 at the Razzies. The first One was nominated and it's vastly superior

If I waste money it ruins my day and I won't pay to see this when the trailers were so boring
I had faith that Joker Folie á Deux was going to be one of the best movies of the year, but... after I heard a lot of rave reviews since Venice... I don't know.
As a gay, I'll go watch it anyway. God forbids Gaga gets called box office poison
What does it have to do with being gay? And it seems Gaga is a box office poison, we've seen it with A Star Is Born and with Gucci.

original joker was just decent too.. shouldn't haven gotten so many nominations

Oh okay Damien Hurts, Academy Award nominated actress Lady Gaga should take notes and retire after your very necessary notes on her acting, probably 😂
Also Margot Robbie’s Harley is existed in another universe, how tf she would’ve appeared in this universe? Not to mention her version of Harley simply wouldn’t have work in this universe AT ALL

Lady Gaga is a great actress. Perhaps you aren’t big on subtlety…
actually her and phoenix are the only redeemable parts of the movie. gaga does the best she can with what she’s given…
I am so bummed at the amount of bad reviews I've seen. I was so looking forward to this movie. I'll still see it, but with much lower expectations
Looks like Gaga might not get nominated for the Oscar’s house of Gucci and now joker 2 ahhh
Phillips is not a great director. There's no reason to think he could pull this off. At least that's what I thought going into the cinema. I was right!

He got $20,000,000 to be in Joker: Folie à Deux.
daaaaaaaaaaaaamn
Madness!
Yea but he was paid 5 million for joker that made like what 20 times its budget. So at least he got a solid payday for this nonsense

The fact that it is a dark story does not mean it cannot be a good musical with well blended music parts. Take Dancer in the dark for example.
This is truly the Folly of Two.
gremlins 2 had the same opening hint hint...

Happy.october Brian!
Why make it a musical? Why??
For me personally I usually find Joaquin as an actor to be overwrought.
He plays a great villain though (gladiator) - him and that joffrey guy from GoT have to be 2 of the easiest to despise villians of all time.
A MUSICAL????B for the Joker???? Hard pass. 😫
