  • This video will outline the fluid, filter, and grease service for the Kubota ZD21 diesel zero turn mowers. The same basic procedure should apply to the ZD18 and ZD28.
    Engine Oil Filter: HH150-32430
    Engine oil: 1 gal 10W-30 (3.4qts reqd)
    Transmission Filter: HHK20-36990
    Hydraulic fluid: 2 gal UDT hydraulic fluid
    Air filter: K1211-82321
    Contact your local dealer to ask about the ROPS program to retro fit an older Kubota tractor originally sold without ROPS with a new factory ROPS system. I used the program on my ZD just so I could add a sunshade.

    There is a grease zert for the middle spindle as well it is not lubricated by the deck gearbox.

    For two years I thought there was a fuel system problem and it turned out it was the seat switch 🤠🤠🤠

    There is also a grease fitting on the front axle underneath which lubricates the pivot mechanism. Easily overlooked. Good video!

      And a couple on the rear drive shaft and one at the base of the blade hydraulic motor you missed too. I would really like to have seen a video on replacing the bottom oil seal on the blade hydraulic motor. In case you need to fix your ZD21 seat I did a two part video Total strip down repair and rebuild of my seat. Hats off for a fine video thanks

    Good video. Just a heads up, the middle spindle does have its own grease point under the gear box, and there's also a grease point on the deck-lifter joint (each side). Also two grease points under the seat for the control arms. I had this mower for several years before I stumbled across those by accident

    No, you are way off on the new price. I have one I bought new for $9500.00. I did have a transmission fail in 2014. After repair I have been running it with the transmission overfilled with no problems so far. Mine has a little over 800 hours on it now, and I really like it.

    I purchased my ZD 21 new in first year they made one. I was in the Lawn Care game. I sold out in 2004. I kept Z and a 36 Bunton. I am going completely thru it. I have never changed the hydra fuild. It has never used a drop of hydraluc fuildThe question is Changed just the filters? Much like a automatic transmission in car. The fuild is still clear. Have you ever heard of a problem being started by changing the fluid ?

    -- there are lots of stuff that needs to be done on these Zero Turn Lawnmowers - with tractor motors in them - mine is a ZD 25 - which is really a 28 with the fuel turned down - bought it new - made a 5 1/2 hour job take only 1 1/2 hours - and is much much quieter - it makes mowing a LOT more entertaining - I have had mine stuck many times because the rear end sticks out in ditches and such -- fun to unstick - unreal quick and agile -- I have tractors and all grown peoples toys - fixin to get another bigger tractor soon - raised on a hog farm back in the 50s -- tractors are a different lifestyle ! -- hehehehehe -- even if ya don't get enough hours on the oils -- in the winter -- at least change the filters anyway -- a trade secret on longevity - napa/ fram / wix makes better priced filters that are just as good - kubota does not make their own filters - they are outsourced to GMC, a company based in Indonesia -- oils are not either - Kubota engine oil is manufactured by MacAllister Machinery Inc. company - I would not use a very cheap oil or filter though - yu went too fast for most to benefit -

    Good video, they are good machines, I love the one I’ve got. You got a really good deal on it however I bought my 2005 new in 2005 for 10K(sorry I hate to burst your bubble, I think you said they cost 25K new, which isn’t the case) I think the new ones now are around 15-18K, those are the bomb, Curtis even makes an air conditioned cab you can buy for it lol

    Thanks for the great video! I have a ZD 28 and the other day I smelled smoke and I think I burned up my deck gear box. I was going to try and take it apart but was not sure how to access it. I also do not have my owners manual. Any tips are appreciated! I had the issue of mine over heating and I blew air threw the radiator to clear out debris in the fins and that has helped. It sounds like I really need to swap out the Trans fluid before that goes bad too!
    My wife hates out lawnmower lol she said I should have gotten a brand new Ferris but oh well! I picked mine up used with about 700 hours I think it was used to mow an air port. Thanks again!

      These are very durable and long lasting machines with regular maintenance. If you bought it used and are unsure of the history, go in and change all fluids to get it up to date. I flushed the cooling system last year because it was running warm in 90 degree heat. It never gets above the middle of the gage now. I would recommend pulling out both screens and blowing them off and blowing out the radiator after each mowing. Blow off the deck too.
      As for the gear box, they fail pretty frequently. What a lot of people miss is that the manual days to change the bottom seal every 2 years on the gear box. That's probably premature, but when it fails the gear lube runs out and it tears out the bearings and gears. First thing would be to check the fluid level in your gear box. Make sure there's still some in it.

    My 1996 Kubota ZD21 had a leaf bagger on it. Is that why there is a hole in the back of the flywheel cover? And it has Femco ROPS.

    Did you over fill the transmission case or both the right hand and left hand axles?and how much did you overfill?

    Also, how come you didn't use the self jacking mechanism? Was it stuck by chance? Mine was and I'm still trying to free the spinning rod so I can turn the jack and lift the front of the mower...

    • @ironicallyengineered2486
      @ironicallyengineered2486  2 роки тому

      The pin is missing from the jack handle on mine. I never bothered to get a bolt for it. So it's just as easy to run it up on ramps or get the jack out.

    Hello, do you mind sharing how you bypassed the seat safety switch? Did you just use like a paper clip to connect both ends to test it and then left it that way or did you have to take the wires off of the connector and tie them together? Or something else? Thank you.

    • @ironicallyengineered2486
      @ironicallyengineered2486  2 роки тому

      Sure thing; just unplug it from the bottom of the seat. I took a piece of wire a few inches long and crimped on terminals on each end to fit the plug for the tractor end of the harness. When I was just troubleshooting the problem, I jammed a piece of wire in the plug and it worked. I just wanted something a little more permanent.

    I've searched everywhere on line for my zd21. Where is the dipstick thing to check the oil, and how do I get the seat to flip up it if the way. I see the front stick that moves the seat back and forth, and a knob behind the seat that I can't budge in any direction. I added antifreeze when it got hit. When i start it the engine lite stays on and starts beeping loud. Please help.

    • @ss-vy3zq
      @ss-vy3zq Рік тому

      That should say when it got hot.

    • @ironicallyengineered2486
      @ironicallyengineered2486  Рік тому

      The dipstick is on the side of the engine. It's a metal ring you pull out; it's not labeled.
      To flip the seat up you have to unscrew those knobs behind the seat on the seat platform.
      Not sure about the engine light. If you overheated the engine maybe there's some damage and that's why the light is staying on.

      @Ironically Engineered Thank you. I still haven't found the oil stick or got the seat to budge. But I do see a white plastic fan , and then a broken belt hanging by that. So that's why it's over heating. Not much I can do, but call my local kubota dealer and have them come and get it. I'll have them to change the oils, and check blades & everything while they have it. Getting old, bad eye sight, arthritis, not easy. This Grandma is giving up lawnmower repair. Thanks again for responding, much appreciated.
