Somebody may have already mentioned this...but after you make your cast if you will close your bail by hand instead of letting it flip when you turn the handle will help too.
Also close the bail by using your hand. Don't close the bail by using the handle to start reeling. You want to make sure the line is in that guide when you start to reel. Love your videos Randy. Been watching them for 3 or 4 years now.

I use braid to flourocarbon on 8lb and under.
I was on Lake Erie yesterday throwing straight 6lb flourocarbon, I was fishing a menace grub on a small shaky head for smallmouth. I was making very long fan casts on a flat, when I would get bit closer to the boat it wasn’t much of a problem, but when I got bit far from the boat, getting a good hook into the fish seemed exceedingly difficult. I was using 6lb seagur invizix and on the long bites I got a shit load of line stretch on the hook set, lost a lot of fish on the way back to the boat. I switched to 12lb braid with a 6 foot leader of 6lb invizix with an FG knot. Stopped loosing fish immediately.
I'm not a pro fisherman but I'm 70 years old and have been hooked on fishing since my Dad first took me when I was about 6 years old. I have always fished with spinning equipment and for most of my life used Mono and then later added Fluorocarbon line. About 15 years ago I spooled up one of my reels with braid and tied on a 12ft. or so leader of fluorocarbon. It wasn't long before I changed all my rods to that setup. The only negative I have ever found is if you do get a wind knot they are a pain to get out. I have never experienced fish getting spooked with that long leader and at this point I don't even remember what line memory or line twist looks like. Great sensitivity, longer casts, and a huge money saving over the long run. I think it's the single most improvement in spin fishing I have ever found. You do you but I'm sticking with it.
A trick for when you get a casting loop; do NOT open the bail to pull it out. Not! Not! Not!
Instead, drop the drag way down and pull it off the side. Much less likely to get those big knots.
@@FastEddy1959 When you cast with braid with a spinning rod the line is so light that if you just start reeling when the bait hits the water you get those loops. If you get into the habit of grabbing the line with your fingers just ahead of the reel putting a slight tension on it right at the start of your retrieve that problem goes away.
@@tomearly111 Yes, good tip. That habit also helps with fluoro, as it gets the line to lie flat on the spool… and even with a casting reel, it keeps the line tight which prevents it from “burying” into itself.
Thanks for the video Randy, but I’d like to add my perspective along with a couple other related points for my fellow anglers to consider regarding this nagging issue we all have to deal with. I don’t think we can ever completely eliminate line twist, but I think the main reason many of us use braid as a backing material is to mitigate the high costs of fluorocarbon. Most fluorocarbon line is around $30 for a 150 yard spool. That’s just absurd to me. By backing my spools with braid, that same 150 yard spool can last me 10 times longer. Further, by backing with braid, I can change out different pound test lines on the water in a matter of minutes. Can’t do that with a full spool of fluorocarbon without wasting most if not all of it by changing it all out. I’ve actually gotten completely away from using fluorocarbon line for the bulk of my fishing and have replaced it with mono without a problem and actually think I miss fewer fish because of it but that’s another discussion. Mono is much smoother to cast,easier to handle and only $10 for a spool of 1,500 yards…you read that right people. 10 times more line at a third of the cost of fluorocarbon. Fish on people!!
@rionsummers5939 I think this is my #1 reason for using braid to fluorocarbon. I don't have a bass boat and can only really take 2-3 rods with me (carrying) to the lake or pond so I can increase my flexibility by just carrying a few spools of different size fluoro. This is especially true if I want to switch to or from finesse baits.
I agree 100%, I went back to mono or Yo-zuri hybrid either straight or as a leader with braid, besides cost most break offs I had was with fluoro.
This is one of those issues where personal experience will dictate preference.
The braid to flouro or mono depends on what you are fishing for and where you are fishing. The main reason I have a flouro or mono "bumper" is because in the PNW, where I live, I do a lot of river fishing and the flouro or mono bumper is so if I get hung up on the bottom and have to break off my terminal tackle I can control how much line is being lost in the river and the lighter bumper is easier to break.

I am sorry you're just wrong. You are not taking into account so many advantages that braid gives like cost or casting distance. Braid last so much longer. I agree with you on most topics, such as climate, forward facing sonar. This topic I think for a weekend fishermen you are just wrong.
When I use straight fluorocarbon I have a lot more problems with line twist and it springing off my real and it’s a headache. With braid to flouro I don’t have that. I’d rather use straight flouro honestly but I can’t deal with the line twist. That’s My opinion anyway
I do the same for the same exact reason. Straight fluoro was a nightmare.
I do as you also. I use braid to fluorocarbon. I do use a longer leader. I have wondered if you spool your spinning reel with straight Fluorocarbon, then go out into your yard and make a full cast. Then tie off the Fluorocarbon to a tree then give the line a slight tug, or pull. I have wondered would this act of pulling tight the Fluorocarbon and stretching, would it relax the springiness of the line and help eliminate the loops off the reel.
I have found very excessive or liberal use of silicon line spray conditioners will help keep the Fluorocarbon limper.

Randy, I think in a previous video you suggested using a spinning reel with a slightly larger spool diameter than many of us use for bass. That helps too with line management.

Excellent video, at times i use braid due to reel does not handle 12lb test FC line very well, so I use 15lb braid and 12lb FC leader heavy brush, structure....

There’s really no reason to not use braid to leader on almost any spinning reel setup, especially if you’re just a fun fisherman like me…I listened to Randy’s advice on the fluro and spooled up with fluorocarbon using the bucket of water like Randy said and man it sucks…you can’t cast as far there’s less sensitivity and worse hookups and it’s more expensive lol I listen to Randy’s advice on pretty much everything but braid lol

Braid is more economical.
If you feel you’re getting fewer bites, increase the length of your leader.
A good way to hide braid is to use a marker to change its color every few feet. Easier to do while spooling up. 0:15
Nope Randy i disagree. Braid to fluorocarbon is the ticket. It’s cheaper the braid will last for years And all you got to do is tie leaders that cheaper by far.

I've also noticed that reeling while your drag is giving to a fish will result in massive line twist.
I have tried many types of fluorocarbon lines and have yet to find one that I have liked. It's braid or mono or copolymer for me and yes, braid to leader. I guess I see all of the disadvantages of fluorocarbon and none of the upside. I do tend to fish very light lines, mostly between 4 and 10 pound test in Kentucky reservoirs.
Randy, I use braid to floro on one rod only, and that would be the drop shot, I resisted for many years, but the line twists a lot, I had so many problems with just that one, so I made the switch. By the way, please keep fighting the good fight against ffs, we appreciate it
Braid to fluoro or mono (when set-up properly) absolutely EXCELS on spinning gear, especially bottom baits - jigs, tubes, trigs, ned, neko, and most definitely the drizzop shizzot. I didn't especially like it at 1st but after some trial and error and help from a buddy, I love it and will never go back to all mono or co-poly. All fluoro on spinning? Horrible and likely Millions agree with this. I think many who try braid to fluoro expect it to work perfectly right away and I suspect they used low quality rods, reels, and lines. There's definitely a learning curve to it, adjustments relative to how you cast have to be made such as angle and force and the diameters of each line matters tremendously. Obviously one of the most important aspects is the knot and the 3 most common are the Alberto, Double Uni, and FG, which is very difficult to tie but once you learn it you most certainly will be a braid to fluoro aficionado for life. Oh and why does it excel?
1. Braid lasts much longer and thus is less expensive.
2. Braid casts better and farther.
3. Braid has no memory so no coiling or jumping off the spool like fluoro or mono. Yes, filling to below the spool edge is best but doing so does NOT eliminate memory and thus has no no effect on "loops", tangling and birds-nests! Also, the 1st install of line is moot as once you make a cast the reel installs the line.
4. Hook sets are easier and more consistent
5. Fluoro is less visible so u have the best of both worlds.
6. Little bit of fluoro stretch is great and much better than a lot of stretch with all fluoro or mono.
7. More sensitive = better bite detection (feel)
8. High vis = better bite detection (line movement)
9. Once you learn it you'll have more confidence which means more bites, better hook-up percentage, more fish, and bigger fish.

I use nothing but braid with a mono leader and it works great for me.I get atleast 2 years out of the braid and just rety a new leader when needed.It is much for economical and I get better sensitivity and better hooksets with braid.Braid is the way to go especially for spinning gear imo.
I fish primarily northern smallmouth almost exclusively on spinning gear. Any possible benefits of using braided line quickly disappear if you use both high quality flouro of the appropriate size and a quality reel. I do use braided line as a backer to tie 100ish feet of 6lb tatsu to. Makes a large spool last a whole year and fresh line can be changed in a matter of minutes.
I use braid to flor for casting distance. I use light baits and the braid is a smaller diameter than the Flo.
Where I fish, we catch a lot of pickerel. big ones and small ones. I use powerpro 20lb braid, and occasionally they would slice through it with their teeth. Seven years ago, I started using a quality 20lb fluoro leader, and it has never happened again. I still catch just as many if not more.

I had nothing but problems with straight flouro. That said, I didn't have the info that we have now as it pertains to the how too's. I will definitely give a try next time I respool.
Hey Randy! I was wondering what your take is on the translucent braid by Spider wire. Apparently it is supposed to have both perks of mono & braid.
The issue I get is that the Fluorocarbon line has a helix that tense to knot up. How can I avoid that. I’ve tried pulling tension and getting the memory out but it still happens. Thoughts

It's been my experience, when using 10 Lb. and above Fluorocarbon on a spinning reel, that the line holds too much coil tension and when fast casting and retrieving, the coils loosen on spool.. and because I'd rather focus on fishing, I use Trilene XL or braid.
For bass fishing, straight fluorocarbon is best. For inshore saltwater fishing that I primarily do these days, leaders are king. Need the casting distance of braid with the ability to have a 15-30lb leader. I would recommend using a braid or mono backing when running straight fluorocarbon. The biggest complaint is the expense of using straight fluoro but you can back it and only use 150' of fluoro that can be changed regularly without costing an arm and a leg.
I have tried both, straight fluoro versus braid to fluoro leader and I can't really tell a difference except in my wallet. One time spool with braid and add leader material as you need it or $26.00 every time you want to spool up with straight fluoro. I catch just as many doing it with or without a leader.
another thing you can do if you have a boat is let all the line without anything tied to it run out behind the boat to get twists out. works well for me with mono at least
I use braid to fluoro because if you vehicle or boat heat gets above 100 F you destroy your mono. This way i only have to replace my leader on my 40 rods when i put a new fluoro leader on every year. I get better hooksets.

I like to fill about 1/2 my reel with cheap braid or mono. I tie a double-uni to my fluorocarbon line. Then fill the rest with the expensive fluorocarbon. I think Seaguar makes the best line.
I run straight Fluro on baitcaster and my line keeps breaking down in the spool for some reason
I use fluorocarbon and also still use trillene XL . Sometimes I think fluorocarbon is a little to stiff. I only use braid on frog 🐸 rod.
Try Sunline fluorocarbon, limper than Trilene and casts great.
Ive never had luck using straight flouro on spinning reel and I also leave 1/8in gap. It just seems like it has way too much memory and "springs" off the reel. Wish I could get it to work cause I hate tying leader knots. lol
Try gamma edge. It’s pricey but has minimal line memory. Also these guys use heavy lines. When you’re throwing 20lb flourocarbon, you can get away without the braids the same does not hold true for an entire reel of 6 lb flourocarbon. You will get line stretch on long casts, and the spooled line will not handle that well.
flouro, mono & braid each have an advantage for different situations.
I still prefer Sunline D-Braid or their newer Almight sinking braid to a fluoro leader after trying many types of straight fluoro.

1. It’s too damn expensive
2. It’s too stiff
3. It’s not as strong as mono
4. The knots on flouro don’t hold up.
5. Mono is so cheap that you can respool fresh line every week and still spend a fraction than you would on fluorocarbon.

Staight braid on baitcasters and braid to mono/copolymer leader on spinning gear. Zero use for florocarbon.
Braided or not, I still get a lot of twist. Did everything you've mentioned.
I use copolymer that's fluorocarbon coated and dont have any problems
without even watching your vid yet, all you need to do is hold your rod tip high when winding slak. Never wind in slack line with rod tip looking down. Thats all you need to do!

I agree with fluorocarbon being more effective just not more efficient what I mean is that I just fish for fun and use straight fluorocarbon on my baitcasters and do use baitcasters most of the time and I change my line out on my baitcasters often and does get expensive so being on a tight budget I use braid on my spinning reels on all the baits that I use a swivel on so it’s braid,swivel,fluorocarbon. I do have one with straight fluorocarbon but this works best for me in my situation that I’m not able to replace fluorocarbon all the time. Anyways I do not disagree but there are very many different types of angler’s out there and it’s not one size fits all. Just like with the rods I would say every angler that could afford megabass rods would have some so for the rest of us we have to get the best we can afford especially with rising prices in today’s economy.
Also don't use the handle to close the bail.. close it with your hand

Maybe I’m using the wrong line what I found fluorocarbon Is stiff and watery like weedeater String maybe I’m using the wrong brand tried a couple of different ones. I just didn’t like The way that it comes off the spool the brands that I tried would be a nightmare on a spinning reel, but maybe I’m using the wrong brand not sure
It is not you, fluoro has a ton of problems. Even he said stuff like “reduces the amount of birds nests” but it doesn’t get rid of it completely, all you can do is try and manage it. Braid is the only thing that doesn’t get twisted up and birds nest at all.
I can’t claim to have ever spooled a spinning reel. However a bait caster has a bevel on most their spools. You never want to go past that either. I know, the sky is blue and water is wet.
I'll just have to accept that this just your personal opinion, but in my defense; i'll prefer to use braid to leader (flouro/mono) any day over straight flouro/mono. I can't speak for anyone else, but i guarantee half of us used braid to leader for a different reason beside following the pros hype train; we do it:
1) to save money, because braided line last way longer compares flouro and mono
2) that the braided line will always be my main line and only use size or length of the leader line as needed
3) to avoid line twist headache
4) because braided line cast way further too, it doesn't create coils that can rubbed on the guide as it go through the guides to hinder and choke our distance
so i don't care what the pros is doing or whatever hype they're creating, i do it to fits my prefer fishing style and preference. sadly from what i see here is; you only think that most of us that viewer/subscriber you fish like you or fish from a boat (sorry to say we don't have that luxury) and mimicking everything the pros does. just so you know some of us fish from the bank and shore and we have our own way of managing our fishing gears. now i know why people love to watch other video that you talks about LS and FFS or other BS that has nothing to do with fishing.

That is absolutely not the perfect amount of line to have on a spool. If you are managing your line properly (i.e. always winding your line back on with tension and NEVER using the bail auto-trip) you should have your line level with the lip of the spool. It stands to reason that by reducing the friction of the line leaving the spool it will result in better cast distance and improved control. Also if you know how to tie good knots, and practise so you can tie a new leader knot in less than 30 seconds then braid to fluoro is the far superior option.
I can’t afford to spool up my rods with FC. I use braid to a 6 foot leader. One spool of FC for that has lasted me 4 years and counting. I’ve tried straight FC on a reel and it was a nightmare. Weak at the knots, unbelievable coiling problems, more backlash and too expensive. I’m not fishing for food, money or trophies, so I don’t care if someone would have caught an extra 2 fish if they used straight FC. I honestly think FC is the big scam here.
