  • As we are currently stuck in an intense spell of horrible weather (well, here in Scotland anyway), I thought it would be nice to post a bit of dashcam footage I had sitting on an old SD card gathering dust on my desk. So here it is - a drive from home in Montrose to Balmoral Castle, and all on a beautiful summer's day. I hope you enjoy the drive :)

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

All I can say is, WOW! After watching your drive to Balmoral I am in awe and relaxed. The scenery, the weather, the music, and the two old buses. We are planning a trip to the UK maybe next year. My other half has never been, me, I grew up in Lancashire, till I was 16. Since then it's been the USA. We were thinking of traveling as far as Edinburgh, but might have to add the drive to Balmoral into our travel plans. Thanks Steve, for this awesome video. Scotland is amazing!

I remember this beautiful scenic rout Steve, I believe this is what everyone needs just now, I have emergency dental work ahead of me 🥴 it would be wonderful if this could be transferred to my dentist ceiling! Oh! to be in Scotland where my cares would melt away, thank you 🙏 for this mesmerising tranquil journey to “Balmoral” sad now that our dear Queen Elizabeth is no longer with us! great memories for me of a time long past Steve, blessings to you and Alicja from a dismal wet & windy Derby’s country side, 😊🥀🤗 “Slainte” 🥃

Steve, you've done us proud - this certainly is a welcome sight in such a dreich spell... All the more so for the like of me who can't drive and for whom any drive anywhere is such a rare treat! Fettercairn certainly looks like the kind of place I'd like to explore... I remember reading about the Cairn o' Mount Road in The Courier when I was about 12 - and now, 46 years later, I have seen what it looks like for the first time! I was at Braemar a few times as a child, and I did a day trip by train and bus from Edinburgh to Ballater about 13 years ago and, was then driven south along the A97 from Huntly to the A93 and Perth a couple of years later, but that's about the limit of my experience of that part of the world - mainly owing to the lack of public transport, and never being fit enough to cycle! So, many thanks, my friend - and should you ever feel like doing any more of these drives, I for one would love to see them.

The bus you followed is one of the buses that my granda would have worked on, I spotted "Alexander and son" on the rear of the bus and that's where my granda worked...at Larbert where the main garage was. Even after 65 years I can remember catching those type of buses when he took me fishing in Loch Earn. Falkirk to Callander, Callender to Loch Earn. How the memories come flooding back with the glimpse of the rear of a bus!!

At 19.50 mins, where you overtook the the last bus, I fished the lake on the right for trout. The only thing I caught was the fence that bordered it! I went to the Coilacriech Inn 23.48mins a few times. Its an amazing little pub with formica topped tables and bar. Wonderful hospitality. Early evening you would often have some of the gillies from the Balmoral estate popping in for a pint. The pub also operated the single petrol pump opposite, not too many single pump petrol stations about 😀. Thanks again for the memories.

Lovely drive which includes the first of three great hill roads between Angus and Caithness. 1) Cairn O' Mount. 2) A right turn at Ballater takes you to the Lecht and Tomintoul then on the Grantown on Spey and Inverness. 3) A short distance past Dingwall lies Struie Hill which has at its height en route to Bonar Bridge, what imo is the best view in all of Scotland. Continuing North to Wick I would once have included as a number 4, Berriedale Braes just South of Dunbeath, but road straightening some 20 plus years ago has taken the fun out of that short stretch of hill road. Set off early on a Summer morning and that is quite some drive!

Thank you. That was amazing. I live in Australia, but have family in Laurencekirk, Stonehaven, Aberdeen, and around Fraserburgh and Peterhead. I live in Australia and we haven't been able to travel due to covid and family health issues. I've travelled along many of those roads, and hope to again, one day. In the meanwhile, that video is the next best thing to being there.

Lovely & what a beautiful day. The music was very atmospheric but then it started to make me feel melancholy! I looked up Balmoral, what a shame the Victorians demolished the old castle. They went round demolishing anything old, we no longer have an Elizabethan manor house here for that reason. 😢 You're furnishing me with such a huge bucket list & I'm 65 😬 🤣

    Trees are green....
Yes, but which green do you want them?
Scotland demonstrates that trees are green, but oh how many shades of green.

This was truly stunning, we were only in Fettercairn 2 weeks ago, for a BBQ /birthday party, and we were staying in St Cyrus. And what a lovely drive over to Balmoral. Had the privilege of playing the organ in Crathie Kirk on a visit, was even invited back for the Sunday service but was not staying that long - could have been playing for Her Majesty!! Loving the videos, thanks Steve
