Brought back great memories - cycled it the wrong way round in the early 80s. In Applecross we were asked 'have you come over the hill' we had cycled there along the coast road, thought that was hilly enough, little did we know what was ahead! Quite like the music - well done

What time of year was the drive? I'm planning a road trip, and Applecross is on the list. Nice music in the background. Not what I typically listen to, but I'll go looking for more.
Thanks Warren, it was September 18th, at 9 in the morning. I watched a guy do it on a good day in March, going the opposite direction. I’m glad that you thought the music was nice. It’s what I listened to on my journey up and therefore was part of the journey. It’s my music, so no copyright issues. Many thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. A happy new year to you and your family
before they made that road into kishorn i had to take huge concrete sections up to the otherside of applecross where they had constructed a pier the pipes were offloade there onto a big barge and that was with an articulated lorry 1970 the police closed the road for me everytime i made the journey untill they constructed the access road to the yard
Hi Gwendolyn, I was driving a Skoda Karoq. People as you can see do take these on the road, but those bends are quite tight and you may need to reverse. I was driving along that stretch mid week outside of school holidays at just gone 9 in the morning and you can see how busy it was. Watch my second video which covers the second half of the journey as it shows how the traffic was building. Although in April it may not be so bad, as long as the weather stays good for you. It is a beautiful area and well worth the visit. It took us 40 minutes to get across the pass. Which way will you be approaching?
We arrived very early on the morning, afraid the Inn was not opening till midday , we do plan to go back at some point as lots of people have told us how good the food is and the welcome . X
We did this journey in May and constantly had four seasons in one day. The dramatic weather matched the epic scenery. I’m not sure a 4x4 towing a large caravan as shown on the video is at all suitable for the pass. How they managed to maneuver the tight hair pin bends would have been crazy!!
I agree. Anyone who does tow a caravan along that road would have to be an excellent driver, but if you get two people pulling caravans coming the opposite way, It will not be good. I can't imagine trying to reverse a caravan back to little passing point that may already be full .
@@johnrlhunter we also came across “monster” size motor homes causing traffic chaos. Why would you want to take one of those up a narrow bendy pass with two way traffic flows and small passing places ???!!
@@hpman911 Because they see it as a challenge? Or maybe it is because they are travelling the NC500 and it is part of that route? Anyway despite the logic of it all the people who do it regardless of the mode of transport get to see an amazing view.
@@johnrlhunter ok John I hear what you are saying but I’m only referring to the very largest motor homes. For the common good of the majority of visitors perhaps there should be a size/ weight limit on this narrow pass well sign posted on the road(s) leading up to it .
Great video.... thanks. When I see it, I wunder why you stop for uncomming trafic, when you are driving up hill. I was tolled that going down stops for trafic. Maybe its me who is wrong. thanks
Whoever was closer to a pull in seemed sensible. No one wants to have to reverse back. I am glad that liked it and yes you are correct that I had the priority, but chose to do what I felt was courteous.
@@hfranke07 I am glad that you like it. I am off to Sutherland in a couple of months time, but this time I am taking a drone. Hopefully the weather is good
Hoping to hop over to Scotland and do a bit of driving in the coming weeks before it gets too busy. Anyone recommend the best drives? I won't have the time to go to the very north. I'm a keen photographer. I'm into snow capped peaks and lakes.
I love Sutherland, the west coast has so many amazing views, but too far north. Put it this way we are coming from Salisbury and feel that it’s worth the extra miles. Hopefully I won’t change my mind 😁
What is missing from one of the trips I made over the pass is a nuclear sub with its missile ports open and a destroyer at the north end of the bay. Also once met a 4 axle fuel tanker on the top of the pass on the same bend as the car you met. Luck I was on a motorcycle as the tanker used all the road except the 'inside line'.
@@johnrlhunter not a very credible source. It’s sad to see local place names, that have been in use for centuries and reflect the cultural heritage of a place, get renamed by tourists and bloggers. Don’t take that personally. It’s meant as a general observation. Nice video.
@@thisiswhyyi no offence taken. I named the video as this because I didn’t know any better, this is what other people called it, so I did the same . I was corrected early on and I updated the description so that it was included.
It seams a little crazy, I couldn't believe it when I saw the guy towing the caravan. I was glad that I had passed the hairpin bends. You only need a couple of those coming down the pass to cause real havoc. Some people take this road thinking only of themselves and without a thought for others who are coming the opposite way
Aye, and no caravans as the sign at the bottom says (if it hasn't been littered by stickers from the tick box types) and definitely no large motorhomes getting stuck and having to unhitch the car they were towing.
@@jennyreddaway2666 You are so right, yet here on UA-cam, there are videos of people doing just that.Did you see that guy towing a caravan on the video?

It is although, we drove it in a loop rather than to Applecross and back. Sutherland is now my favourite part of Scotland but then again Scotland is a very beautiful country
Balach na Ba is an old and venerable name, I've never heard it called anything else, balach, like welsh Bwlch, pass, as you're no doubt aware. Applecross from a British Aber and cross like Welsh croes. Ignorance is a sin...
@@thisiswhyyi Sorry for the anglicised old fashioned spelling, haven't been up there since the 80s. What I was actually thinking was Bwlch na Biw, Abercroesan. Maelrubha was a Pict. From Ulaid, Gwlad, the country.
It is understandable when you think about all the extra traffic that is generated because of it. It is an amazing drive but too busy for the size of the road.
Just finished doing the NC500 , i went the beginning of May, went anti-clockwise weather was lovely sunny every day but a bit windy, views stunning , when you do the B869 & the Applecross try and do them in the morning, less fools on the road. Enjoy i know you will.
For me it doesn't matter what time of year the landscape changes with the weather, if the weather is good you will see more, it may be more pleasant, but the weather is very much a personality in Scotland, adding the drama to those fabulous landscapes.
Probably cost. More investment in upgrading the roads around Scotland would be a nice idea but places of natural beauty could be destroyed by too much traffic
@@Kiltking maybe, but if there are any improvements to the roads that are needed, then I think that it is on the second part of my journey, which I haven't put up yet. From Applecross to Shieldaig as it was the slowest road. The Applecross pass in comparison is such a short journey.
@@johnrlhunter I understand the Beauty of it al of course but I think we can move away from 15 century army rds. No wonder it cost people an extra £15 deliveries charges. Why not build a hotels on one these beautiful views like in Switzerland.?
A remember talking about this route shortly before getting married with the minister who officiated at my wedding and him telling me how he would like to retire to Applecross. Sadly that was not to be - but I suppose he found himself in what is perhaps the only place that is preferable.
I cannot believe how lucky we were with the weather. Although we were helped by the fact that we set off at 9 am. This year we travelled up to Sutherland. This is a majestic place that everyone should visit, or maybe not. The roads are not built for it, never mind trying to find somewhere to eat. I love only 3 places in the world, Scotland, New Zealand and Rome. Scotland is the closest for me.
It's a pity that the road is in such a bad state of repair. With all the tourist money this area generates, you would have thought a dual road with more parking areas would be built.
Enjoyed the video but what the hell happened at 9:04? I wanted to remember that moment when we first crested the rise and saw the spectacular view of the pass - but all you have is a bloody still! Disappointed.
We stopped to take the photo of the pass, which we thought looked amazing. It was a view that the dash cam wouldn't get unless we were travelling the opposite way. As you can see we pulled in to take the shot.
Afraid that is my fault, although John is correct the dash cam can only take what is in front of it ! We stopped several times as I was almost leaping out of our sunroof to get photographs! I love good photographs that I can then get onto the walls of our home and remind me of our adventures. Sorry you were disappointed x

If the songs you’re playing aren’t appreciated then you lost ten million viewers but if you just played proven classic music I wonder how many more viewers you’d get? Unless of course the purpose of this beautiful scenery is to SELL YOUR SONGS ?
I have released very few of my songs as they take me so long to finish, but as I am sharing my journey across the Applecross Pass, it seems fitting that I include the music that I played on my journey. If people don't like my music that's cool, we all don't like the same kind of music and whatever the music that is selected there is always going to be someone who doesn't like the music.
I thoroughly enjoyed the music. Very fitting for the journey. Hoping to do the Applecross Pass next year. Do you have to go back the way you came, or can you keep going south along the coastal road after Applecross to get back around to Skye? Thanks for sharing your video! Was great!!

Brilliant insight, my brother-in-law told me that he was offered fencing work at time. Thanks for sharing
Enjoyed the music as well as the drive! We will be doing it in April 2022.can I ask what you were driving? We will be taking a small motor home.
Where is the Applecross Inn - where a warm welcome greets you no matter what the weather.
It’s in the village of Applecross
@@johnrlhunter Caravans should be banned on the pass, simples!!
@@johnrlhunter Your answer made me come to the video again,- and I saw it once more,- great video. Made me happy.
I drove over this pass in 1979 and I didn't see one other vehicle the whole drive.
It must have been marvellous
What is missing from one of the trips I made over the pass is a nuclear sub with its missile ports open and a destroyer at the north end of the bay. Also once met a 4 axle fuel tanker on the top of the pass on the same bend as the car you met. Luck I was on a motorcycle as the tanker used all the road except the 'inside line'.
What the… lucky no one with a caravan was coming the other way 🤣
‘Bealach na Bà’ is the name of this route! Where does ‘Applecross pass’ come from? Never heard it called that.
www.atlasobscura.com/places/applecross-pass
@@johnrlhunter not a very credible source. It’s sad to see local place names, that have been in use for centuries and reflect the cultural heritage of a place, get renamed by tourists and bloggers. Don’t take that personally. It’s meant as a general observation. Nice video.
@@thisiswhyyi no offence taken. I named the video as this because I didn’t know any better, this is what other people called it, so I did the same . I was corrected early on and I updated the description so that it was included.

@@johnrlhunter Awesome :-)
When I used to drive this route you would only pass one or two cars the whole journey. No motorcycles or camper vans .
I wish the roads weren't so narrow.
Me too but it does add to the charm, that is when you don't have something big coming the other way.
Hi, I just subscribed. Really enjoyed your video. Just wondering how I find the / your music is it a available to buy somewhere ? Thanks
Thanks James, I am glad that you like the songs. My music is available on Amazon, ITUNES etc. music.apple.com/gb/album/sarah-single/1531451720. Not all of the songs are available to buy yet, but I am working on it 😁

@Elroy Keaffaber Who gives a shit?
I agree with you , no boring bits at all, just incredible scenery
None of us - especially about you.
Is it worth the drive? I’m staying in Glencoe for a few days.
It is although, we drove it in a loop rather than to Applecross and back. Sutherland is now my favourite part of Scotland but then again Scotland is a very beautiful country
Boring parts? There are no boring parts.
So true, but some people just want to have the highlights
I’m not sure all that single track road you have adds to the charm any, but it certainly forces the driver to pay attention!
Applecross Pass for me is a one time journey, we were lucky with the weather, but Scotland is such a wonderful place
Balach na ba please
Are you requesting that I rename the video?
Balach na Ba is an old and venerable name, I've never heard it called anything else, balach, like welsh Bwlch, pass, as you're no doubt aware. Applecross from a British Aber and cross like Welsh croes. Ignorance is a sin...
You mean ‘Bealach na Bà’?
@@thisiswhyyi Sorry for the anglicised old fashioned spelling, haven't been up there since the 80s. What I was actually thinking was Bwlch na Biw, Abercroesan. Maelrubha was a Pict. From Ulaid, Gwlad, the country.
@@davewatson309 I’m just being pedantic ;) now Bwlch na Biw sounds interesting!
I was reading, that Applecross want's to be taken off the NC500!!
It is understandable when you think about all the extra traffic that is generated because of it. It is an amazing drive but too busy for the size of the road.

May definitely, less traffic, no midges.

Just finished doing the NC500 , i went the beginning of May, went anti-clockwise weather was lovely sunny every day but a bit windy, views stunning , when you do the B869 & the Applecross try and do them in the morning, less fools on the road. Enjoy i know you will.
Summer best day o the year
For me it doesn't matter what time of year the landscape changes with the weather, if the weather is good you will see more, it may be more pleasant, but the weather is very much a personality in Scotland, adding the drama to those fabulous landscapes.
The music complements the scenery. You must upload “Lost in the night” to iTunes etc. And let’s have the rest of the trip to Torridon!
Thanks Niel, I will work on getting it done :)

A remember talking about this route shortly before getting married with the minister who officiated at my wedding and him telling me how he would like to retire to Applecross.
Sadly that was not to be - but I suppose he found himself in what is perhaps the only place that is preferable.
It is a pretty place to live, thanks for sharing
The video ain´t real: no rain, non fog, no freezing temperatures and only few motorhomes
The English road seem to be worse, especially here in Wiltshire. Thanks for leaving a comment 👍
