    Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

    Apologies - audio is not great on this video. You can thank GoPro for that! I 'upgraded' to a GoPro11 but have had nothing but trouble with it, and GoPro make it as difficult as they can to resolve/return, so I do feel a bit ripped off by it. I'll persevere though and try to find an audio solution for this camera. But in the meantime, it'll be back to the GoPro8 for the next few videos I think! Cheers.

His product placement is just ridiculous and pathetic, don’t forget his bosse headphones either, also the way he speaks, he’s English so why does he refer to everything in an American way with the way he pronounces everything and even the currency is in dollars, very strange seems as he’s English

    I tried it last November down to London and it was a terrible experience, which made me regret not taking a mid-morning departure from Glasgow. Bed was uncomfortable, the room was tiny and I had to get pretty creative with stowing my luggage and there was no on-board hot food due to staffing shortages (hint, pay people a decent wage to work these things and you won't have staffing shortages). The Caledonian Sleeper has been something I'd wanted to try for a long time but the cost versus the experience just wasn't worth it in the end.

  • @RogEdwardsTV

    In my Big Corporate days I was a regular on the Cally Sleeper because the fare was usually cheaper than a flight and a hotel. Now the prices are so ridiculously high it’s difficult to justify the sleeper however much I love it. I would love to try the double room though! 🤔

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  Рік тому +9

      Aye, you'd get a decent hotel and flight back for the price of the double these days mate, but despite the lack of sleep, there's just something so cool about any train, especially an overnighter :)

      @alexmcwhirter6611 Рік тому +2

      Yes many others have said the same Roger. I suppose it's a way of justifying the cost of the new rolling stock with its enhanced amenities. Despite all this The Scotsman reports that Serco said Cal Sleeper had lost over £60 million over the past seven years.

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV Рік тому

      @@alexmcwhirter6611 that’s an eye-watering amount. I guess now we’ll have to wait and see if the Sleeper goes back under Government control and what they will do to experience and the prices. 🤔

    That is a good idea, tapping the room to lock it with the card. Better than most hotel rooms, where it is so easy to leave your room card on the table and walk out, then just as the door shuts, you get that horrible feeling when you realise you have left the card and locked yourself out! I think Bunk beds and a bit more room might be better, but then it is not for everyone. Also, I don't fancy someone climbing over me in the middle of the night to go to the toilet! Nice that you can lock the room, though. Looked very clean, shame they don't check for damage and things that don't work. But that tends to be normal these days, fit it and it will never need looked at again! Yeah, right!!

When I was a child I went to Ontario on a train with my Mom to visit my Grandmother. I remember I loved it and slept great but as an adult I haven't managed to find that bliss again. Moving beds and noise don't make for for a good night's sleep for me I guess. I am envious of others than can sleep through anything. Lovely room you had though but Alicja having to work the next day was unfortunate. The next day after getting no sleep isn't good for anyone. Never slept well on any sleeper train I have been on. Especially the Night Riviera - on the return to London I may as well have been sleeping in the Class 57 engine room! But there is just something about them. Such a cool way to travel! Caledonian will have to wait for a while, it really is very expensive if you want a decent cabin, especially when you compare it to European sleepers at 1/4 of the price.

    Interesting vid Steve. Agree with your comments about style over substance and I bet Alicja was shattered when she got to work. BTW, that water pressure looked hilarious in the shower! 😅

      Haha at least it was hot - I've heard horror stories of freezing cold showers, although that would have done us good in the morning! Alicja was a wee star going to work the next day!

    Did the old sleeper up to Fort William many years ago - the longer trip made sleeping easier. Would love to see you do it one day as everyone else only ever goes to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Maybe when it comes back under ScotRail?

    🚂 😯, that beats me sitting on my rucksack next to the doors of the carriage, going home at Christmas on a packed train when I was in the Paras in the 80’s & 90’s……. Mini hotel room 🥳.
    We live for travel too, we’ve got 3 weeks in India coming up this year, we’ve used ‘Select Asia’ for a lot of our South East Asia travel too, they’re a UK company that has a great deal of customer customisability so you can swap hotels, airlines, destinations and all with local hosts & guides on the ground to make sure you don’t lost or stranded, plus it means you can play with the cost of your travel😯👍

    Steve, travelling on the old sleeper up to Fort William was one of my most memorable experiences ever. Going across Rannoch Moor in the snow was simply amazing!
    Sadly, my first experience of the new sleeper (before I did this UA-cam thing) was terrible. I too had a text saying the club car was closed, but I was welcome to eat and drink my own provisions in it(!) - gee thanks! And getting into Edinburgh, we were basically booted out onto the platform at 6:30 absolutely knackered and heading for the nearest Pret! My second experience was better but it’s so inconsistent, still! Anyway, I wait with interest to see what changes later on in the year but as it stands, for me, the Night Riviera is much much better atm.

      It sure is a bit of a flawed product, but very friendly staff help a lot. It is frustrating though as it could be SO much better with some creative design. Hey, when I got that text I was just relieved it wasn't cancelling the service altogether. I was half expecting a bus replacement :D

      @@steve-marsh I'm not sure it would be practical to provide overnight coaches to the different destinations unless the line is physically blocked (extreme weather once meant the Highlander ended up being a static train in Euston overnight - especially on the highlander!- I was onboard , everyone was clueless about what would happen the next day . For the lowlander I suppose Carstairs could be a case of taxi from Glasgow with potentially the same coach(es) to Glasgow going via Edinburgh .

    I took the sleeper last Summer and the benefit was not having to go through airport security and the thrill of it honestly. I'm surprised you didn't get a packet with shampoo, etc but maybe they were out. You did, however, get the eye mask which I did not. Overall, I'd say it was worth it, but definitely not the best night's sleep. I was a bit shattered when I got to London and was unaware that I could have used the lounge at Euston because the shower didn't really work for me. But I enjoyed it nonetheless! Nice video and yes those Scottish sky colors .. amazing! And even though I didn't sleep well the bed was VERY comfortable. I didn't sleep because I rolled from side to side!

    The morning after a night train always felt like a waste of London time, you’re tired, loaded with luggage and waiting to check in, the return journey so much better, a proper breakfast and train home, but always like the romance of a overnight train. Everything expensive these days, like concert tickets and train fares soon everything will be virtual. Lovely cabin fresh shower a bacon roll and home, what more do you need

    Those corridors are even tighter than the ones on the old Mk 3 sleepers, aren't they? I fear next time I use it, I will need to use the accessible room anyway, so maybe that's a blessing...
    I'm liking your "more quality than substance" phrase a lot - that describes the pricing problem in a nutshell. I gather they're priced on a rough parity with London hotels, but that ignores the fact that an awful lot of people wouldn't be staying in such hotels - but in the much cheaper pod or hostel varieties anyway.
    I also agree about the length of sleep issue, which is only really resolved if you're travelling all the way to Inverness, or Fort William. I appreciate they need the main line station platforms during the morning rush hour, but surely there is a little-used bay somewhere on the suburban network with a decent frequency of trains you can use free of charge to reach the city centre stations later? Springburn with four platforms of which one is normally spare springs to mind - or Platform 0 at Haymarket, as an Edinburgh sleeper terminal?
    "We didn't get to sleep until 1.30 in the morning." - that's actually a little too much information, Steve. Especially as you couldn't get a seat in the bar...😇😄😂

    This year, hubby and I finally did the Amtrak Coast Starlight train from the northern part of Oregon, down to Southern California. About 27 hours in a sleeper cabin. I did…okay. Hubby didn’t sleep a wink. Knowing what I know now, I think I could have a very enjoyable trip overnight on a train, but I couldn’t drag him back on for anything! Oh, well.
    Thanks for your report on your trip. I’d never seen the double room before. Hope Alicja survived her work day. ATB to you both.
