I love traveling by rail and have done a trip on the Cornish Riviera that was marvelous., next time I am in the UK I want to do the Caledonian Sleeper so fingers crossed. Thank you both for taking me along as always your videos are very well done and a joy to watch. Take care and stay safe. Cheers.
In my Big Corporate days I was a regular on the Cally Sleeper because the fare was usually cheaper than a flight and a hotel. Now the prices are so ridiculously high it’s difficult to justify the sleeper however much I love it. I would love to try the double room though! 🤔
Aye, you'd get a decent hotel and flight back for the price of the double these days mate, but despite the lack of sleep, there's just something so cool about any train, especially an overnighter :)
Yes many others have said the same Roger. I suppose it's a way of justifying the cost of the new rolling stock with its enhanced amenities. Despite all this The Scotsman reports that Serco said Cal Sleeper had lost over £60 million over the past seven years.
@@alexmcwhirter6611 that’s an eye-watering amount. I guess now we’ll have to wait and see if the Sleeper goes back under Government control and what they will do to experience and the prices. 🤔
Many thanks for bringing us along on what looked like it was a nice way to travel. Quite different from when I used the Kings Cross to Aberdeen sleeper in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
I used to live at Garelochhead, Argyll in a previous life: We could travel from our own wee village on the west coast, right into central London on the Deer Stalker from Fort William at 11pm. We have four kids, and we used to get them into their jim-jams at the house, drive up to the station, and wait on the platform to hear the clatter-clatter and roar of the diesel engine as the train came in: brilliant! Again, it was a bit of an early start in London, but hey-ho no easier way to get there for us.
Steve, the look on your other half face was priceless when you said about 10 min brisk walk to the next station! But look on the bright side, there were no annoying rattles like what you had to injure on a previous overnight endurance!!!!
I tried it last November down to London and it was a terrible experience, which made me regret not taking a mid-morning departure from Glasgow. Bed was uncomfortable, the room was tiny and I had to get pretty creative with stowing my luggage and there was no on-board hot food due to staffing shortages (hint, pay people a decent wage to work these things and you won't have staffing shortages). The Caledonian Sleeper has been something I'd wanted to try for a long time but the cost versus the experience just wasn't worth it in the end.
I always love a good Caledonian Sleeper trip Steve I am glad we both got to try the double room. I am hopefully going try the Aberdeen to London route in the summer after last year’s trip from Inverness. Hope you are both well and you found your Van and Alicia got to work ok. Hope you are both well take care both
Hi Steve. Thank you so much for doing these videos. I've recently discovered them and they're great. The thing I really like is you show all the interesting nooks and crannies and really show what your country has to offer. I'm from Sheffield but I absolutely love Scotland and hope to head up for a visit soon. We're thinking Arran for our next trip. Gairloch is one of my favourites and have visited numerous times. Keep up the outstanding work. Phil.
That is a good idea, tapping the room to lock it with the card. Better than most hotel rooms, where it is so easy to leave your room card on the table and walk out, then just as the door shuts, you get that horrible feeling when you realise you have left the card and locked yourself out! I think Bunk beds and a bit more room might be better, but then it is not for everyone. Also, I don't fancy someone climbing over me in the middle of the night to go to the toilet! Nice that you can lock the room, though. Looked very clean, shame they don't check for damage and things that don't work. But that tends to be normal these days, fit it and it will never need looked at again! Yeah, right!!
Crikey - train travel has changed a lot since I last did a long journey! Not that I ever used the sleeper service. Great video - and I'm delighted that you were compensated with free travel. Nice one Caledonian Sleeper!
Oh my gosh! Two in a row where my feet stayed on the ground. I am absolutely thrilled. Plus we were traveling by rail!!! Thank you so much for the trouble that you go through to make these videos for us. Be well, stay safe, love from Texas.
My wife and I did the Caledonian Sleeper to Aberdeen in a double room. We boarded at 8.30pm 9.15 departure. We ate in the Club car and it wasn't too busy. We slept reasonable well, but as you said, you need to acclimatise. Sadly my shower was cold. We would do it again though! Great video, cheers.

I have often wondered what it would be like to go up to Edinburgh on a sleeper; not sure I could sleep either, but the bed did look comfy. That was great you got a complimentary after your last experience. Nice one Steve
This must be your 3rd cal sleeper trip! Lucky to get a freebie though and clearly that room was the best way to go but I suppose it costs the most. You've covered all the types of room and I bet some people stay in that club car all night which means it needs to be bigger. Great video as always.
Aaah a new Steve video, will watch that tonight as I am working at the moment.. Was just checking the channel of something new came up.. Thanks Steve.. 😊😎😊
Steve, travelling on the old sleeper up to Fort William was one of my most memorable experiences ever. Going across Rannoch Moor in the snow was simply amazing! Sadly, my first experience of the new sleeper (before I did this UA-cam thing) was terrible. I too had a text saying the club car was closed, but I was welcome to eat and drink my own provisions in it(!) - gee thanks! And getting into Edinburgh, we were basically booted out onto the platform at 6:30 absolutely knackered and heading for the nearest Pret! My second experience was better but it’s so inconsistent, still! Anyway, I wait with interest to see what changes later on in the year but as it stands, for me, the Night Riviera is much much better atm.
It sure is a bit of a flawed product, but very friendly staff help a lot. It is frustrating though as it could be SO much better with some creative design. Hey, when I got that text I was just relieved it wasn't cancelling the service altogether. I was half expecting a bus replacement :D

Considering it's a train, I think that is pretty amazing and I know far more luxurious versions exist around the world, but I would be happy with that. Best thumbnail yet btw!
Great video, Steve and Alicia! In my college days, I would take the Night Owl from Boston to DC. Started at 10:30 pm and arrived at 7:30 am, spending a lot of time in NY switching engines. I never took a bunk, being young and cheap, but there was always a party in the back of the last car.😂😂
Not bad at all Steve to say the sleeping pod was complimentary, it just about covered every thing one would need and well thought out, I thought the shower was going to have a malfunction at one point but all was well😅the corridors would be a bit of a challenge if two buxom ladies wanted to pass at the same time i would imagine! thanks 🙏 both of you for sharing a different aspect of traveling overnight with us, 😴🤗👏
Great video as always. I’ve thought about taking the overnight sleeper to Edinburgh (I go a couple of times a year to visit family there) … but was put off by the price. (And I know I wouldn’t sleep well). But the views on the East coast line are so amazing ( during the daytime) who would want to miss them ?

Cheers guys for another great vlog.. Not seen one on the double room before. Take care and continue the travel. Just a thought, how about Oslo to Bergen by train which stops at Finse (check it out). Would be amazing in winter 😊.
Oh I'd LOVE to do that one. In fact there's a lot I'd like to do over there, the thing that restricts me to be honest is the expensive fare just to get to the start point :(
Different way of travelling from London, and the bonus of the complimentary ticket as well, so another good informative video from you both, and keep well. All the Best
This year, hubby and I finally did the Amtrak Coast Starlight train from the northern part of Oregon, down to Southern California. About 27 hours in a sleeper cabin. I did…okay. Hubby didn’t sleep a wink. Knowing what I know now, I think I could have a very enjoyable trip overnight on a train, but I couldn’t drag him back on for anything! Oh, well. Thanks for your report on your trip. I’d never seen the double room before. Hope Alicja survived her work day. ATB to you both.
I am doing that again next month along with The Cardinal and South West Chief from NYC to LA. Due to budget constraints it will be in coach but of course the seats are miles better than the Caledonian Sleeper.
410 £ ? That is insane! You could get a nice hotel and plane tickets for the same prize. By the way I loved the UA-cam-thing coming in and out and in again :)
Never slept well on any sleeper train I have been on. Especially the Night Riviera - on the return to London I may as well have been sleeping in the Class 57 engine room! But there is just something about them. Such a cool way to travel! Caledonian will have to wait for a while, it really is very expensive if you want a decent cabin, especially when you compare it to European sleepers at 1/4 of the price.
Always love your videos Steve!! Euston to Glasgow is a special train for me. One time I fell out with my pal and had to pay near on 200 quid to get home, the other was a trapse round Euston for 2 hours, begging for the good graces of a steward, because my ticket home was from Watford Junction. 😂😂
That was very nice of them to give you a complimentary room. Maybe one day I'll do that trip but the prices would certainly have to come down a lot. I think at present, I'd rather do the Night Riviera in the MKIII coaches, so much better. Keep the railway vlogs coming, love em.
The Caledonian sleeper is such an icon, would love to do a return journey soon, but looks like there's an element of luck in terms of staffing and facilities
I always slept well on overnight sleepers, must be the rocking motion of the train, the same as on the water whether it be Norfolk Broads, canals or sea journeys, the rocking motion gets to me - unless I am just lazy. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks for sharing this trip, was good that you got the complimentary tickets.. it’s expensive, but I’d so like to go up to the highlands this way some time! Really enjoying your vids, you have a great relationship there 😀👍
Excellent that your got your free trip Steve! There's nothing like a good train journey but I know what you mean about not getting much sleep overnight on one. When I was a child I went to Ontario on a train with my Mom to visit my Grandmother. I remember I loved it and slept great but as an adult I haven't managed to find that bliss again. Moving beds and noise don't make for for a good night's sleep for me I guess. I am envious of others than can sleep through anything. Lovely room you had though but Alicja having to work the next day was unfortunate. The next day after getting no sleep isn't good for anyone. Thanks for showing us your cabin and your trip and let's hope your next one goes smoother. All the best!
Morning Steve and Alicja hope you had a good holiday looks like a short trip not much sleep but it was free 😊 At lease it wasn’t snowing! Take care see you soon ps like froggy 😘
Nice Video Steve, the cabin looks great and very modern. Great breakfast!!! Only been on a sleeper once from Glasgow to Euston back back in 1994, a while ago. Maybe the price will come down eventually.
Did the old sleeper up to Fort William many years ago - the longer trip made sleeping easier. Would love to see you do it one day as everyone else only ever goes to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Maybe when it comes back under ScotRail?
The morning after a night train always felt like a waste of London time, you’re tired, loaded with luggage and waiting to check in, the return journey so much better, a proper breakfast and train home, but always like the romance of a overnight train. Everything expensive these days, like concert tickets and train fares soon everything will be virtual. Lovely cabin fresh shower a bacon roll and home, what more do you need
I can see the first minister ordering the arms length company to lower the prices. Which is why I'm holding off until it happens 😂 watching UA-camrs like you and Alicia do the trip has whetted my appetite for an overnight trip...and aye you two are more entertaining 😝
I love the sleeper and well done for going to the effort of making a vid on your way home. Having used the sleeper many times over the years I have to say for decor and onboard services, the older sleepers from the 90's still look better than todays. Still it was great to have a double although not quite reaching the level the extra cost deserves. Still a wonderful way to travel. Gosh I am sounding grumpsville today. apols.
Enjoyable video Steve and Alicja. So expensive though. Lucky you got a freebie. Don't think I'd pay that much. Seat would do me for probably the same amount of sleep. Hope Alicja managed to stay awake at work the next day!
Just watched your trip Eastern Airways and the reception they gave you and now this train journey, the difference in customer service is amazing.

The whole time you're just thinking 'at least I'm not in a seat' :)
Very enjoyable. Thanks, guys!!!!
Sounds amazing mate :)
Ooh, the Night Owl! I had a good job then, and those roomettes were one of money's great joys.😊
Not bad at all Steve to say the sleeping pod was complimentary, it just about covered every thing one would need and well thought out, I thought the shower was going to have a malfunction at one point but all was well😅the corridors would be a bit of a challenge if two buxom ladies wanted to pass at the same time i would imagine! thanks 🙏 both of you for sharing a different aspect of traveling overnight with us, 😴🤗👏
Back on the rails next week Bernice :)
Hi Steve and Alicja. We so enjoy watching your videos . We are watching from Cyprus tonight and our son watches your videos every week from Dubai . So appreciate seeing our homeland from afar . Our home is in Scotland too and great to hear you grew up in Stonehaven . I taught in all 3 primary schools there before I retired. Keep up the great work it's brilliant . Dot Jack & family
Cheers guys! Great to hear the videos are being watched literally all over the world! Wow! Ahhh I only went to Mackie in Stonehaven, never had the chance to experience the primary schools there - I was still in Dalgety Bay :)
Cheers John!
Wow would LOVE to do that trip - but would need a nice hotel at the end of the line for a good sleep :)
I am doing that again next month along with The Cardinal and South West Chief from NYC to LA. Due to budget constraints it will be in coach but of course the seats are miles better than the Caledonian Sleeper.
Oh, that was neat! It is - 44 below zero with the wind chill added in in Minnesota.
That's crazy!!!! Stay warm!
410 £ ? That is insane!
You could get a nice hotel and plane tickets for the same prize.
By the way I loved the UA-cam-thing coming in and out and in again :)
Haha thanks mate :)
Loved it ❤
Thanks to you both for another great video. However I never did work out what you’d seen at the theatre. Can you enlighten us. 😊
Haha cheers Ian! Book of Mormon :)
@@steve-marsh Thanks Steve. We can look forward to theatre reviews from now on then 😂
Great video Steve and I loved the You Tube gag. The bed did look super comfortable though.
Thanks so much :) Aye, it was very comfy, no idea why I don't sleep well on the move!
Hard to disagree with what you say here!
Haha memories! :)
That was very nice of them to give you a complimentary room. Maybe one day I'll do that trip but the prices would certainly have to come down a lot. I think at present, I'd rather do the Night Riviera in the MKIII coaches, so much better.
Keep the railway vlogs coming, love em.
Oh I'd love to sample that one mate! Cheers!
@@steve-marsh Think of the fare being a combination of a rail fare and the cos of a hotel room
@@tomcarr1358 Indeed - and you would find it would be cheaper to travel up by day and book a hotel bed you can sleep in.
Amazing content again Steve 😁 thank you both again to my favourite UA-camrs
As always too kind mate :)
Really good video Steve. So interesting. Didn’t recognise you without your baseball cap. Haven’t seen your hair before!! 👏👏😀😀🏴
Thanks for sharing this trip, was good that you got the complimentary tickets.. it’s expensive, but I’d so like to go up to the highlands this way some time!
Really enjoying your vids, you have a great relationship there 😀👍
Cheers Simon!
Thanks Janice! Totally agree, being able to sleep on the move would be a real blessing!
Haha you cdve been put in broom cupboard was funny alecia saying do we get a room lol
Excellent, just wish there was more railtrack in Scotland.
Good point!
Morning Steve and Alicja hope you had a good holiday looks like a short trip not much sleep but it was free 😊 At lease it wasn’t snowing! Take care see you soon ps like froggy 😘
Cheers Linda!
Lovely video, thanks both.
A freebee, nice. The shower sound just like I feel at 7.30 am. 🤣 interesting to see the double room. 2x👍
Nice Video Steve, the cabin looks great and very modern. Great breakfast!!! Only been on a sleeper once from Glasgow to Euston back back in 1994, a while ago. Maybe the price will come down eventually.
Cheers David! Would love the price to drop so we could do this more often!
Did the old sleeper up to Fort William many years ago - the longer trip made sleeping easier. Would love to see you do it one day as everyone else only ever goes to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Maybe when it comes back under ScotRail?
Oh I'd love to mate! :)
You're so right John!
Lovely. Greetings from Canada.
Thanks so much Cheryl! :)
Thanks Steve another great video. A great way to travel but expensive.
I can see the first minister ordering the arms length company to lower the prices. Which is why I'm holding off until it happens 😂 watching UA-camrs like you and Alicia do the trip has whetted my appetite for an overnight trip...and aye you two are more entertaining 😝
Cheers Shaun :)
Gosh I am sounding grumpsville today. apols.
Haha :)
Enjoyable video Steve and Alicja. So expensive though. Lucky you got a freebie. Don't think I'd pay that much. Seat would do me for probably the same amount of sleep. Hope Alicja managed to stay awake at work the next day!
Poor Girl had a tough day at work! You're spot on, sleep is tough even in the best room!
