Not “less colourful” but less colour information to work with. Visually it would be almost impossible to detect, but for things like chroma key and high end grading then you want all the colour information you can get. So for straight out of camera, 420 should be fine, for post stick with 422. Also the A7S3 comes with 10bit 422 all i frame which is very large file sizes, but very easy to decode - easier than the codec Jason mentions in the video.
Great video Jason! Just a correction on the 'dual ISO' The Dual ISO kicks in 4 stops from the base iso. The pre production models use to have it at 16000 (slog 3 & 2) but the production models are now kicking in at 12800. To calculate the stop just double the ISO value. For example: NO PP Base iso 80 Stop 1 160 Stop 2 320 Stop 3 640 Stop 4 1280 (1250 on camera) and the next value (1600) is the 2nd ISO Gain with much lower noise. 2nd ISO kicks in at 1600. 😊
Actually even easier to remember the second gain for any profile is Base*20. So 640*20=12800. It's always *20 no matter what profile you go for. Interested to know "when" people will switch. Let's say your scene needs 5000 iso. So is it better to stay there or boost it up to the second gain and maybe use an ND to bring it back? What's the optimal switch point? 5000? 6400? 8000? Fun experiment to try

12800 ISO instead of 16000 was only error in first non production A7sIII,now it is fixed in production cameras,so the right ISO is 12800, not 16000. Gerald Undone said the same in the video you talked about👍
Great vid! As other's have mentioned, in the production version of the camera Dual ISO kicks in at 12,800 for Slog-3 and it's different with each profile/gamma. Philip Bloom did a great video covering each PP and where the Dual Gain kicks in for each.
the decoding problem only exist on macOS and older windows systems. if you have a RTX 2000 GPU or newer, they fly through those clips like butter because they offer hardware en/decoding for h265
A lot of people seem happy with the active stabilization mode, but for me I struggle quite a lot with it. It is way to intent on going into "tripod level stabilize" so when slow panning handheld with some full stops you get a lot of short jitters stopping and starting. A bit disapointing. I guess it has to be paired with a gimbal to shine.
Something I just found out to add is that you cannot put a microphone on the hot shoe or you get massive feedback. I've been using the rode wireless mic and have had to ADR hundreds of shots because of this, Thankfully I talked to rode and they said the Sony may have a shielding issue that is causing the feedback. I took my receiver off the camera and let it dangle and finally had crisp audio. I guess this is Sony trying to force you to buy their microphones.
Thanks, Jason. After watching this video, it confirmed that I am right all along NOT to buy Sony a7siii. For videographer or cinematographer, this is not the camera for me. With the recent leak, Sony FX6 would be a better choice for me. It has all the specs of Sony a7siii with an FS5 body and ND Filter, SDI, XLR input, and RAW output via SDI & HDMI; a dream video camera. Imagine the low light of a Sony a7siii and all the cinematic features of a proper camera. The rumor has it, it will cost slightly more than Canon C70. So I will be saving up for Sony fx6 for the next 2 years. Patience, discipline, and the required features of a camera are the way to invest in a camera. Don't jump without knowing how to swim. As Jason pointed out, the hardware of the computer and new accessories required to handle Sony a7siii are a pain in the butt if you are not ready for it.
Watch out with that top handle. It comes lose constantly. It’s the reason I won’t buy the fx6 and never bought the Fs5.. when you’re doing run & gun work, the handle CONSTANTLY comes lose. I was always shooting with a fear of the body separating from the top handle. Be warned. That 2 knob design they use is so stupid. Same thing Canon did with the C100.

I have the small HD focus monitor and just realized the the A7S III only accepts full HDMI. I went to NewEgg and bought an adapter - I have not tried it yet but hopefully it works. Also, small HD sells a micro HDMI to full HDMI cable on their website.

You can shoot simultaneously highest quality 4k and proxy files internally at the same time. Edit with proxy in 2k already generated by the camera and finalize with 4K. Seems like nobody talks about it. Check the menu.
Do you think if you use high shutter speed in order stabilize with catalyst browse wouldn't you get motion issues with led lit areas (flickering), TV screens (flickering), flying helicopters (stationery rotatory blade), car tires (not rotating)?
This is so interesting. Is HLG2020 the only profile that supports 10 bit color on the A7SIII? I am wondering because some of my recent videos were shot in PP Off and I had the Movie Settings set to 200M 4:2:2 10bit. I am hoping they still retain 10 bit color even though it was PP Off. it depends what codecs/settings you use, many computers can have a hard time with h.265 , my 10core desktop 64gb showed signs of struggle editing 4k 120fps with ram maxing out sometimes
Hi. Do you get a jittery image on the A7SIII EVF when filming in the 4K S-I 10bit codec. It literally only occurs with this specific codec and is totally smooth with no issues in all other codecs. Main screen is smooth, just the EVF view. I’ve got the latest firmware, reset the camera and tried different lenses with the various stabilisations turn on and off. Wondering if this is just my unit or a more common problem nobody is talking about? Thanks.
how do u switch off that annoying repetitive message that keeps saying you need a faster card like the C Express if you shoot in 4k 120p etc? even if we already have the card, the message keeps coming back!
I haven’t seen this come up anywhere yet, but has anyone had an issue with the A7S III where the color will shift for a couple of frames (usually the greens and the magentas). I’ve seen it come up on my footage that is manually white balanced, and without any lighting changes. I can’t figure out why it’s been happening!
Have you tried the 10-18 f4 APS-C lens on the A7siii, to see how much vignetting there is? I heard it could fill the whole FF image circle at some focal lengths.
Thanks for the good video. I didn't realise that the Sony A7siii does not record sound when recording at 240 fps. I think I will stick to my Samsung Galaxy S9+ smartphone for the time being as i am looking for a camera that will record video and sound at 240 fps for unlimited time. Any suggestions?
@@mirrorlessny I am trying my hand at cooking videos and some 240fps slow motion make the videos more interesting to watch - at least I think so. I love watching "Webspoon World" as his videos are very interesting to watch unlike the standard cooking show videos. I have made 2 entire videos using only the Samsung Galaxy S9+ smartphone at 240 fps then speeded up parts of the video to look like normal videos. The only difficulty I have with the Samsung Galaxy S9+ was its inability to manually set the focus. So I have many blurred videos at 240 fps. The slowed sound is really interesting to hear.
@@dr.peterscroll422 if S9+ works well then keep using it, just provide plenty of illumination, I did a cellphone vs camera test recently & Galaxy S10 results are pretty bad in low light
@@mirrorlessny It could be the sun is extra bright in Malaysia so the footage does not look too bad. I noticed that the brightness of the sun, when I was an engineering student in England some 40 years ago, was about 2 f/stop dimmer then in Malaysia. That is probably it.
Hi, when my Sony A7sIII is connected to a monitor via the HDMI cable, a high pitch audio distortion is generated from the monitor. I've tried two different monitors, the distortion is heard on both. Is there a solution to this problem?
for 4k60 rec on a ninja v or external recorder you need a special extra beefy hdmi 2.0 cable by atomos, tried to get around it but u just gotta suck it up and pay the 60 bucks to them :(

My biggest problem is when I shoot stills. Whenever I try viewing the raw photos I shot, all the photos showing are with highlight and color clipping. Can't seem to have its view normally. Not sure what issue is that can't figure it out.
I just tried this, and...wow. You’re right. That’s so weird. I mean, it’s no big deal, you can just play the 50p as 25p and you’d be good. But that is still so strange.
@@MichaelJohnsenOslo yes and no :/ If I record in 50p and then export it in 25p, the video will be without smooth motion and it will come out a little chopped :( I don't like this effect. So meanwhile 25p with 422/10bit and proxy for me 🙈

For Slog3 it is 12800
For HLG it is 2000

Different modes have different base ISOs, the second base ISO comes at four stops above whatever the first base ISO is at the mode you are using.

Im pretty sure the laggy playback has more to do with you using h.265 codec and not the 422 color. That is what your computer is not prepared for.
it will still lag in h.264

You're using old info. The second native ISO is now 12,800 in Slog 2 or Slog 3. And the CFExpress cards have been available for about a week now.

4kshooters . net recommended 1/80 or 1/100 for 24fps video, basically double the usual, meaning 4k120 would need 1/500 😱, the reasoning is motion blur

What's the difference between shooting S&Q 4K 120 vs regular video mode 4K 120?
4k120 has audio, s&q comes in pre-selected fps so don't have to slow it in post, s&q enables highest quality internal video recording

The a7siii sounds expensive but if you compare it to other cameras that are 3 times the cost i dont feel priced out. Its a grear camera. I own one.

What about dust on the sensor visible at large r numbers? People seem to sweep this under the rug alot. That and the EVF being nigh unusable for video

Hi hi, 1) Regards to Point 7 (Timeline 6.52), does it mean that when I am using FF lenses, I can't crop in as well? 2) And if we use Jason's Clear Image Zoom recommendation, does it mean that it's shooting 4K or 1080p? Thanks!
you can still use clear image zoom in 4k with FF lenses!

My biggest problem is when I shoot stills. Whenever I try viewing the raw photos I shot, all the photos showing are with highlight and color clipping. Can't seem to have its view normally. Not sure what issue is that can't figure it out.

I just tried this, and...wow. You’re right. That’s so weird. I mean, it’s no big deal, you can just play the 50p as 25p and you’d be good. But that is still so strange.
@@MichaelJohnsenOslo yes and no :/ If I record in 50p and then export it in 25p, the video will be without smooth motion and it will come out a little chopped :( I don't like this effect. So meanwhile 25p with 422/10bit and proxy for me 🙈
@@TravelTasters If you shoot 50fps in 1/50, you'll get natural looking blur though :) Or apply motion blur in post if using 180degree option.
@@MichaelJohnsenOslo thanks for advice! I always set the shutter speed to double the frames. I don't really try to experiment with it. I will check it at the next project :)

a7S III is enough for stills if you don't crop much!
