Brilliant video as always brother! That shutter sound just hits different I know, I love it. Form sorted also 👊 keep up the great work and waiting that next video. PS: definitely keep PP off, I've done once a photo shoot and haven't realised until coming home that everything was few stops underexposed on the raw image despite being properly exposed while taking photos. Lesson learnt there definitely
Man this comment just saved me a lot of headache. I am just getting into this and starting shooting in raw. Everything would be way under exposed once I moved it into light room and couldn't figure it out. Then this comment made me realize that a picture profile was some how turned on. Turned it off, now everything looks great again! Thanks a lot
Why did it take me so long to find this video.... so helpful. Just getting into the world of cameras and this is literally the most helpful video I have been able to find.
3 years after you posted this video, my A7R3 died and I reluctantly shot stills with my A7S3 and the photos are gorgeous, I can't crop in very far but it's amazing how good a 12mp photo can be when shot with a prime lens. I assume you've moved on from using an S3 for stills, but please give a follow-up if able.
The section at 3:34 - - Does the A7r4 have something like that? I jump between photo and video a lot and it's super annoying to have to change the picture profile constantly.
I'm not sure as I haven't used the r-series. If it has the same menu item, then it should be capable of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't have this as the release date was prior to the S3.
Hello! At 7:35 I see you have JPEG Image Size L: 12M. Please tell me, why I have there only L: 4.3M !? Other settings are the same. Can't solve this problem( And maximum res of my photos 2486x1577 even RAW... Please, give my advice what settings should I change and where? Thank you!
Awesome vid, couple of things here tho: - Turning E-front curtain shutter makes you wear out the shutter at twice the rate unnecessarily. - D-range optimizer only makes any difference when shooting JPEG, doesn't do anything for RAWs
Hey Paul, yes, I can add that to the list. Did you see my studio tour video? Might shed some light (I'm the worst) on the topic for ya in the meantime.
Great stuff. I’ve been shooting video on my a7siii for over a year, and had almost given up on taking photos as I kept messing up all my custom settings and memory settings. This is a huge help. Many thanks. Subscribed
Diggin’ your work man! Just got my A7Siii this last week and learned a lot from people like Potato Jet and Dunna, but you are definitely up there in quality too! Looking forward to learning more about this camera with some of your future tutorials.
If you set the PP (of course you have to overexpose by like 2 - 3 stops I imagine) will the dual ISO work? For taking pictures in the dark could be usefull to have higher base iso kick in, no? Just trying to figure it out...
Thanks Sean, I'm brand new to Sony and trying to learn the menu on a A7S3 & A7C at the same time, this makes the photo mode feel less clunky, as I'm regularly swapping between video and photo.
I always bring mine along with my A7R3 for action shots, i know it's weird but the ability to use electronic shutter with out any rolling shutter is quite a special handy tool.
What happens when you hit the record button when you are in stills mode. I ask because I’m considering using the A7siii in a water housing and the top mode dial is not available through the housing. Hoping it will kick it in to movie mode with the settings last used in that mode. Anyone know?
I've heard amazing things about the R5. If wobbles are the issue I don't think it is worth switching. The active IBIS in the S3 is good, but it sounds like you either need a heavier lens or a gimbal if wobbles are getting the best of you. Thanks for checking out the channel, Shervin

Hey Carlos, thanks for checking out the channel and enjoy the new camera! I use a lot of different ISO settings depending on the situation. Typically shooting in "M" / manual mode.
Dual ISO: Daylight ISO 640: Lowlight : ca. 5000 - 10000 increasing noise; 12800 no noise! Check ist with closed lens switching from 10000 to 12800 and back. In S-Log3 (PP8) Camera sets ISO automaticly to ISO 640
Hi Sean, Big fan of your youtube channel. I am new to use SONY a7s3 and lucky enough to learn a lot from you. Hey Andrew, I'm glad that you like the channel and thanks for checking it out. I never shoot S&Q besides the 240p here and there. That said, I have no idea on this one as I usually just use the playback in-camera to make sure that the shot is good and then I'll see the slow motion in post. I'll look into this for you though and see if there is a solution.
I have one question i can't understand why my camera is doing this. So when I change a setting on the "function menu" for photo it also change it for my video function menu :/ is there a setting that I need to turn off or something ? btw I've listen and made all the instruction you give on this video ^^
Something to add here is that the file size will likely increase drastically when you increase the MP of a photo with the software, but definitely cool for certain shots
duuuude yes a video about exposing with zebras would be great. if possible showing the actual screen of the camera would be super helpful, a lot of people talk about how they use them in a way that is hard to visualize if you are new to the system, so seeing the actual camera screen and adjustments you make would be huge. It's also be really nice to see it done in some various settings. Nailing exposure in a studio with controllable lighting is one thing, I'd love to see someone do an exposure guide in the real world, with the sun, without the sun, with weird lighting, etc and how they get the best results with the camera. Anyways, looking forward to whatever you drop.
Hey Eric! I'm all over it and that video won the vote by a landslide. I'm hoping to keep it under 8-minutes and packed full of the goods. Yes, I'll use a b-cam for this one to show the siii screen because the Ninja doesn't show zebras when screen recording. Dumb. Anyways, coming soon 🤙 Stay well, my man
Excellent video, Sean. I watched it with my A7Siii on the couch next to me and push pause A LOT just to keep up. I'd be interested to hear more of your thoughts about replacing your b-cam (A7iii) with the FX3. I'm in the exact same position, so I'd love you to be my guinea pig as to how that works. For me, the biggest challenge is camera muscle memory. I'm intrigued by the form factor video-centric nature of the FX3, but in going back and forth between those two cameras on a shoot, for example an interview, I wonder if it'll be distracting to have two cameras with such dissimilar button layouts. (I had three A7iii's set up identically and it really helped my efficiency in live settings.) Thanks again for making this video.
That's awesome I do that all of the time :) I'll be the guinea pig haha - I do think that it is a no-brainer combo. I am going to have a hard time dropping the a7iii though. I don't know why, but I still like it a lot for photography. The siii is really nice to have for photos as mentioned in this video but I keep leaning toward the image that the 7iii produces. I. DON'T. KNOW. Anyways, fx3 will happen soon and I agree with what you're saying about the ease of the color science and the menu systems syncing up. In the meantime, the a7iii set to Cine2 with "Still" for the color mode is a relatively easy match with my custom profile on the siii Thanks for the comment, discussion, and for checking out my channel - means a lot to me
I have never thought of the A7s as a video camera. I mean, if that really was it's purpose, why on earth would you design it like a camera for photography? Well, that besides the point. Airplane mode is no longer true. The older models, yes, and just something everyone has gotten use to doing. I've done side by side tests with the S3, and unless you are actually using the wifi/bluetooth, it makes virtually no impact on the battery life whether airplane mode is on or off. Just food for thought.
Thank you Sean! Another fantastic video! Question tho, what kind of fitness content do you make, and where would I find it? I dig your take and explanation, so you’ve got me curious what else you’ve got to say.
Hey Barry, the majority of my fitness shooting is for the brand that I am the VP of and is internal programming or trainer education. We don't have a ton of public-facing stuff at the moment (that will be changing this year), but send me an email and I can point you in a few directions. Glad you liked the video - appreciate you

I've done side by side tests with the S3, and unless you are actually using the wifi/bluetooth, it makes virtually no impact on the battery life whether airplane mode is on or off. Just food for thought.
Huge help, Sean (great name by the way), thank you for this!
side note I feel like this video is more HD than real life lol

If you don't say why you turn things on and off what's the point?
I found it totally confusing 🙄

Thank you Sean! Another fantastic video!
Question tho, what kind of fitness content do you make, and where would I find it? I dig your take and explanation, so you’ve got me curious what else you’ve got to say.
Hey Barry, the majority of my fitness shooting is for the brand that I am the VP of and is internal programming or trainer education. We don't have a ton of public-facing stuff at the moment (that will be changing this year), but send me an email and I can point you in a few directions.
Glad you liked the video - appreciate you

I think it holds up well for photos, but I don't do weddings. I'd say that if 12mp is enough for you that it will work well.
