I almost finished this series 1-2 years ago. Honestly, it’s good. The voice acting is also good for non-English speakers like me. Now this new season might be even better. I’m not a beginner anymore but I still left this comment here for anyone who is passionate.
This series is BY FAR the best tutorial regarding characters. Unlike every other character tutorial (which are more show-offs than tutorials) this one tells you everything you need to know, without skipping anything whatsoever.
not skipping any second of this. been onto this video for the last 2 days just learning all these knowledge while making my own model back to back. never had a background in 3d modelling, and have only been using blender recently, it takes a lot patience and nothing was ever easy everytime you do something new. but if you really love what youre doing the result will speak for itself i believe currently at 5 minutes before the video ends. planned to upload my result here on yt after finishing all of your beginner series to show my appreciation for this tutorial , so thanks for this video guiding me into this industry i never i knew i love so much
incredible work! I'm quite tired of these 5min tutorials which you forget about after another 5 mins. 4 hours with NO RUSH and calm voice is sooo cool, I've been working on my own model following this video for 3 days and it's very helpful, I remember a lot. thank you!!
Excellent tutorial with easy to follow pace, speaking voice, instruction, and no obnoxious distracting loud music. Resource files are provide so learners can follow along. Keep up the excellent work!
49:01 A side note for this part: after extruding and then right clicking or pressing esc to cancel, it doesn’t cancel the extrude, it only cancels the movement of how far the extrude goes. So here, there was a face that was extruded but the extruded face was exactly like the original face because only the extrude movement was cancelled and not the extrude action itself. I’m not that experienced with Blender, but that’s something I picked up while learning. I’m following this right now and I got to this point and thought I’d make that note. I’m sure I’ll have more to say later about this tutorial, but that’s a side note I thought I’d make. This tutorial seems really helpful and I’m happy that I came across it :-)
hes so good at showing how to do things that i (an intermediate user) was able to learn from this video with the audio off so great display of teaching!
awesome tutorial! Working through it now - the first time I was a bit too new to blender, but this run-through is going a lot better. Appreciate you putting the time into making a series like this.
You were so satisfying to listen to! I especially enjoyed when you laughed at the subdivision surface modifier when it messed the look of the initial model. XD Thank you for providing with such useful information for free!
Thank you man! Sincerely I started out of respect the head modelling part 4 times already, you make me feel that I need to be good, I need to get this, so many paths opened
Really appreciate this video - and the way you talk through the various modeling techniques you use. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your full character technique, and am slowly learning to apply it to my own projects as well. Thank you.
extremely helpful, managed to apply everything to an anthro character (with a lot of tweaking) which shows the quality of this, since I was able to apply the concepts to a very not-human face because you explained why everything was needed I always like to dive straight into new mediums so while a donut is helpful for learning the tools, I much prefer to learn the tools while making something I care about
Thank god, I hate tutorials of things i want to learn under 30 min, an hour and 30 min and above and I know I'm actually getting most if not all the information I need. I found what I am doing for my weekend off.
This tutorial is a blessing. I learned so much. There are things I would like to see in future tutorials: Show the statistics and use the menu commands more often instead of the shortcuts. For me it is important to see in what menu or context a command is placed.
Only watched half way through so far but I have to say this tutorial is excellent. Exactly what I was hoping for when starting with character modelling. Extra thanks for pointing out some weird behaviour when doing insets and such that how to fix and avoid them, these little setbacks can be quite infuriating for a beginner. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this - I have always been passionate about animating but I didn't know how to work my way around blender and making a character - I am not finished with the video yet but I am really pleased with my progress!
I'm starting my blender journey again after 11yrs or so . Very rusty and I forgot so much. Thank you so very much for all these tutorials. It seems like a lot was hard to find back when the interface was changed, back when I started Lucy.
I saw something you posted on Instagram about this new and updated tutorial, but I forgot. I remembered today, because I wanted to start a new character in blender... AND I DON'T REGRET IT! When I saw the duration of more than 4 hours, I just didn't react dramatically because I'm still in the office: because if it came from you, it must have a thousand and one essential pieces of information. Thank you, Tom! And congratulations. Thanks to your videos I'm a Blender lover! Keep up this incredible work!
I tried to make the video shorter than the original but failed big time! The un-edited video was 7hrs+ !! Thanks for remembering, and good luck. If you have questions, let me know.
I've been going through tutorials trying to find the right person to learn from and I have to say I really appreciate you. I thought to leave advice but thinking it over it wasn't actually helpful.
Thank you so much for this!!!❤ This is extremely helpful. To be honest, this part took me a few days to get it right, but I did it! Moving to the next one.
Not sure if anyone else had a loop cut issue where it doesn't go through one of your quads that follows the sequence but I had an issue around 1:29:10 where adding a face from vertex mode was really wonky. The issue is that the quad just needed to be merged and wouldn't cut properly before so I just selected the faces and hit m to merge by distance and it worked.
1:58:23 "The next time you're with somebody you love, take a good look at their nostril-" - WOAH THERE, that took me off guard XD Anyway, great tutorial, I started it maybe a day or two ago and I'm already learning so much. I'm having some trouble, but considering the fact I'm using a drawing in an artstyle that is SO much different from yours, I'm doing pretty well. You explain everything in a way that's pretty easy to understand (I mean, english is my second language and I understand majority of it) and even if something is unclear, I can rewind the video and look at the way you're doing it on the screen. So far my only complaint is the fact the volume of this vid is pretty low, so everytime an ad starts I get a minor heart attack since I had to turn the volume up. Otherwise, everything is cool, we'll se how I do later on.
thank you so much for being kind to share what you know :) this is such big help! and i want to share to those who haven't tried yet, using a macropad also helps a lot with the shortcuts :) i have the 30 keys macropad
It's a lie. it wouldn't take you 4 hours... more like 12 or more ;) You just repead what he do, try to understand ect.... I'm finally close to end and couldn't wait for part 2
Just came across this, going to use your images and follow along. I figure a 45 minute video will take me about a week to complete. I figure on redoing a single action at least 10 times. Should be fun...
Just for clarification, iunno if he explains it later, cmiiw, Eevee render engine uses synthetic lighting, which projects an object's shape onto another face or object to simulate shadow. While Cycles render engine uses raytracing, which shoots gajillions of light rays from all light sources and calculates the ones that bounces onto the camera. If it's not available to you, it maybe because your GPU doesn't support raytracing.
wow this brings back memories of my first full character modeling attempt in Lightwave 3D many years ago. seems like little has changed. point by point mesh manipulation is apparently still the best. i've been trying to make some speaking characters using AI but the tools aren't there yet. not even close imo. half the time what you get looks like something from a horror movie. plus it's questionable if you even own the end result. i finally gave up and fired up blender. in the amount of time it would take me to create something 'acceptable' with AI, i can make something perfect in Blender that can also be repurposed endlessly
good tuto, really a good method, I succeeded on the first try this time, as I'm stuck for the moment on the rig of the tuto from the first series you did, I did this one and you're on 3.5, I hope you'll do the sequel with version 4.1, it would also be nice if you did with real hair this time to see.
