I think it's a great car, but I think the shape in the back is the one thing that hangs it out. If you look at the new A5 Sportback, THAT car is beautiful - that sloped up back-end makes it work and I can't for the life of me imagine why they didn't do that for the A7 platform. The ones I've seen that look best are when the owner just keeps the spoiler up at all times.
everything in the rear for me is the selling point the trunk space and the incredible design I haven’t seen a modern hatchback design that has such a refined and elegant beauty to it but of course its just my tastes would I get one? no would i get a used one? hell yes
@@DarthMWAL oh naaah you didnt the a5 sportback is ok, nice even but the b7 a5/rs5 is unparalelled in comparison, and the rs7 is on the same level. that was peak audi and some of the best car designs weve ever seen... and it looks better without the spoiler 😂
And may i say Mr Farah in my eye's you are rapidly approaching the BEST auto journalist / broadcaster on the planet. Your like a 2014 Clarkson, perhaps not as dry, or comedic, but you have a effortless class that grows with each and every video you make. Chris Harris all them mans, they're cool and all but he doesn't improve one iota, while you're the future of auto TV. You some how say only what is required with out all the camera eyeballing facial gestures and over elaborate paraphrasing. In short, you're fresher than all the rest. Oh and as for all the BMW fan boy haters? welcome to Audi, engineering SUPREMACY.
Agreed. My only problem with Chris Harris is that sometimes he's getting way too emotional and poetic. However, he's the best driver. As far as reviewers goes, Clarkson and Farah are my favourite guys.
***** actually i love BMW, i like lots of car and dislike none in particular, my issues is with fan boys - people who see no logic beyond there own personal preference, BMW in by experience have gazillions of these morons, as do Xbox, Apple and other brands. I'm preempting those fools thank you very much.
***** I'm an S5 owner, Apple owner and a fan of BMW cars (My ex car ws an E46 and I used to own a Bmw F700GS bike, So don't put us all in the same bag cause of some assholes :) Thanks hehe.
Being an auto journalist seems so fantastic you get to travel to all these places and drive all these beautiful cars. I would be interested in seeing a day in the life video of Matt Farah.
Harry Verolme Research, writing, voiceover, editing video, planning shoots, responding to comments, answering emails, scheduling cars, managing the company money, doing podcasts, all kinds of stuff.
That specific engine, which RS7 use, produce exactly 609hp when put on a dyno test. On paper it says 560hp. Do the math - that "car" is a street killer.
Like your one take videos. Gives us all the emotion of driving the car. Maybe not all the numbers but they are easy to get on hundreds of other places. But the emotion of driving the car is the one most people want to know and you do a good job of describing that. Feels like we are in the car with you.
Those gorgeous Audi seats are made by an Austrian company, with one of their plants in Slowenia, called Boxmark. And they are really amazing and high quality build. Nice done!
Oh, and if 560 HP isn't enough for you, with just an APR ECU upgrade you can have 674 HP on pump gas! And let me tell you, the RS7 is quite brutal after that upgrade.
There's not many people I like to watch reviewing cars only ones are the Jeremy Clarkson Richard Hammond and James may but you are definitely up there with your videos there is a perfection in your videos that anyone has to respect
The first time I saw that pinstripe in that car (sadly not yet in person), I thought to myself "Finally, an engineer that has a little style." I'm also glad a manufacture let their design/engineer have a little creative freedom. However, like you described, it probably wowed them once they sat in the car and saw it for the first time.
Wow, the ending shots through the valley were amazing! Awesome review, although having an older Audi in the past, i am terrified of the electronics in the car.
You compared it to an M5 and an E63 AMG but I believe this car actually goes up against the M6 and CLS 63 AMG. Either way I love this car. Too bad I'm not rich lol.
NikoBell12 I think you're mainly spot on there. But I don't see the Panamera GTS as competing directly with the likes of the RS7 and M6 Gran Coupe. Given its output and where it sits in the Panamera range, I'd say the Panamera S and GTS compete more evenly with the CLS 550, 650i Gran Coupe, and S7, while the the Panamera Turbo and Turbo S compete with the CLS 63 S, the M6 Gran Coupe, and the RS7.
That's a proper "normal" car review... So much better than the 3 minutes vids (I don't count the intro and the incredibly long outro) we get on TEST/Drive... Maybe if they followed this type of format, giving a bit more freedom of commentating to the host, Drive would make it a bit more interesting to review a Prius or a Diesel VW...
The biggest issue with those is that the editing is done by someone 3,000 miles away who I've never met. Much better to have the editing done in house, that way we can be sure the result matches the intent of what I said in the car, even when it's cut down from 20 minutes of talking to 7.
I pulled up next to one of these on our local roads in traffic, not knowing what it was.....glad we were in traffic and that he/she, turned into the mall. I'd be eating tons of humble pie right now!
The E55 amg was the predecessor to this fine machine. That car was the example that most performance care nowadays took after. it was the top dog during mid 2000s and still destroys 90% of cars out there. long live the hammer.
Matt Please try to talk to the guys at Drive to do car reviews like you do. Good information without being too detailed and good comparison with some opinions of likes and dislikes about the car! Great Job Matt
+biistful lol. No doubt at all. I agree. That was for the people who want to split hairs and say a particular car that is a few tenths of a second "faster" *cough* GTR *cough* is a deal breaker on this thing being a beast.
I rented one of these recently. It was a monster, and surprisingly better handling that the RS6. It gets ridiculously bad gas mileage, though, as you would expect. Worth it for ripping through the Angeles Crest with the windows down.
Was actually just drooling over this yesterday at the dealer while I was waiting to try an S4. Amazing car, could only imagine how It drives, but I didn't have the bank roll to try that one out
Matt, I always think that if Top Gear America had you on board, it'd had done well. Instead, they have those guys who just love to wax poetic, thinking they impress us with their ability to contemplate. Morons. Rock on, brother. You and the guys from motortrend - the Roadkill guys - are the best car guys on the net.
Awesome job sharing that vicious ass RS7 with us Farah! Now there are rumors of a blue one and a white one both with APR stickers on them down here in Auburn, but I haven't ACTUALLY laid eyes them. I don't know if Stephen and the guys at APR have worked their "magic" on these two, but I can def find out. Be interesting to see what they've done to them. I've only actually seen the black APR S7 floating around here.
Damn...well, seeing what they did with their little white TT-RS it doesn't surprise me. They've got a few more R8's and TT-RS's sitting outside. Not sure to what extent they've taken them, but the orange TT-RS certainly looks impressive. And to see/hear the guys taking a few of the cars on "night runs" past my house just makes me wanna hit the track every time I hear 'em.
Rs7, sounds great but here in Canada my buddy just bought an e63 AMG for 127000 and that's Canadian dollars. I drove it twice once before it's computer controlled break in period and it moves. Last week my friend brought the car by and told me as soon as the car hit the break in cycle for the motor the car changed all of the settings and we found out that during the the break in settings car started off the line in second gear. Now that is ridiculous. Point of this is the e63 has 720 wheel horse. I am a lover of Audi and BMW but point goes to Mercedes for this year. I'm really digging the horsepower wars here in North America but now in Asia and Europe. Long live turbo AWD! Love your show!
+Dimitrios Kalfopoulos Nope Audi RS7 Destroys all mercedes and all BMW's except one the AMG GT-S and not from 0 from higher speeds like 120 Kph where traction is not that effective but from 0 RS7 is a killer
Matt, no one can travel 180 MPH "in total safety". That's over 260 ft/sec, almost a whole football field. Anyway, nice review, please keep them coming.
Probably one of the best to come from TST in awhile IMO. Only thing I was looking forward to though was Matt's comparison to, say something like the CLS63, but it never came to that. Future video perhaps?
With the "one take" format, I do the whole thing in one take, so sometimes it changes direction or doesn't end up where I started. See my comment above for said comparison.
It's not last minute. As i have said many times, when I go to press launches, I go by myself, not with a camera crew. so the footage I get is limited to what I can shoot by myself, generally supplemented by manufacturer-provided B-Roll. For examples of that see Jaguar F-Type, Porsche Panamera, and Range Rover. In this case, the B-roll they gave me was very subpar, so I did the best with what I had. The alternative was to not have a video at all.
man i love this chanle so much you are amazing matt..keep going man and i agree with you about m5 and s6 v10 engines they are simply legendary...also the big boy N/A v8 merc.
While nearly every Audi is sexy as hell, they get a bit boring to look at from time to time. This one is another story. That rear end of the RS7 is an instant icon in my opinion.
Fastest four door sedan got my attention. I wonder when Cadillac will re-do the CTS-V again. I have almost forgotten about that car and have done zero research on when they will update it. Either way this has to be one of my favorite Audis
In about 1-2 years, they just made an ATS coupe, and will also make an ATS-V, but like you Im waiting for the CTS-V. The last one was amazing, I wonder if they can top that. www.caranddriver.com/features/2014-cadillac-ats-v-future-cars though the ATS V is gonna be a V6, which pisses me off, cuz if they put a V8 in there they win.
I agree. a slightly tuned LS3 would be nice inside of that one. I think they are just trying to prove that they can do anything now by using the V6. The problem for me is that V6 cars just don't sound very good. I'm glad Cadillac is expanding their market and competition but the CTS-V was THE Cadillac. I'm hoping they get rid of front wheel drive cars in their entire line up though.
AnAngryBlack Exactly, nothing compares to the sound of a big V8, on top of that a small V6's reliability is questionable, and turbos cut the engine's life even more if Im correct.
DesertStateNevada well you have to consider milage and some people care about that. and you cannot compare V6 engines to V8 engines, theres equally beautiful ones. V8s are loud and sexy, but my dad has an e240 with the small v6 since he wants a v6 with manual, and that cars sound is just beautiful, its like a kitty purrin.
AnAngryBlack I disagree on V6s not sounding good. Most manufacturers put zero time into sound tuning their V6s, they just muffle the hell out of them. That's why they sound like vacuum cleaners. With some actual intake and exhaust sound tuning, V6s can have a nice, aggressive, throaty growl. Just look at the new Lexus IS350. 4 cylinders on the other hand, they almost always sound like crap.
I think you need to take a trip back down to APR in Alabama and drive one of these with a tune.728HP and 744 TQ on 100 octane, there will be even more once they get the cats out for stage 2.
recently i was on market and my choices were used cars 2008 rs4 ,2011 ctsv, 2009isf, 2008 m3 sedan, and 2009 c63amg. Let me tell you once you sit in all these car you begin to realize how cheap interior they have comparing to audi luxury not mentioning audi awd for winter is a killer. My choice was abvious. Now i am audi fan.
The RS7 is $120k as tested. The Panamera was $197k as tested. Is the Panamera worth the $77k premium over the RS7? No. But, independent of price, would I rather be driving that Panamera? Absolutely.
Hey Matt, I was just wondering how did you learn about the turbo position at hot side and the lag/throttle response stuff. I want to learn cool knowledge like that too!
They discussed it for like 20 minutes at the technical presentation before they handed us keys to the cars. All the heads of each engineering department get up and give a little talk with Q&A about the technical bits of the car before we go drive it.
I absolutely love the shape of this car. The rear end looks incredible.

It goes up against the CLS only. The Audi-7 series (as I call it) only has one competitor, from what I can tell.
Patrick Turner Why are you implying that the 6-series Gran Coupe doesn't compare to the A7?
Davis Dunlap I can't tell what the hell what BMW is what anymore lol
The hell are you on about. It's competitors:

No car stereo sounds good enough to cost 6k
360 quality!
Does the US get the RS6? way cooler in my opinion
Niels Nope.
Agreed
Unfortunately we will never get it
I think you need to take a trip back down to APR in Alabama and drive one of these with a tune.728HP and 744 TQ on 100 octane, there will be even more once they get the cats out for stage 2.
We should set up a drag race with APR vs. Renntech
recently i was on market and my choices were used cars 2008 rs4 ,2011 ctsv, 2009isf, 2008 m3 sedan, and 2009 c63amg. Let me tell you once you sit in all these car you begin to realize how cheap interior they have comparing to audi luxury not mentioning audi awd for winter is a killer. My choice was abvious. Now i am audi fan.
+Tomasz Rzeznik good man.
+Tomasz Rzeznik agreed.
i loved my e90, but it couldnt hold a candle to my b7 a4's comfort and interior quality
would be interested to know if you like the RS7 more than the red panamera you tested a little while back?? great video by the way
The RS7 is $120k as tested. The Panamera was $197k as tested. Is the Panamera worth the $77k premium over the RS7? No. But, independent of price, would I rather be driving that Panamera? Absolutely.
In case anyone wants to know: the background song is Equivalence of Two Worlds by Instrumental Core :)
Great review Farah!
Absolutely adore this car. I'd take it over the panamera or any other competition any day
Haha Audi underrated themselves !!They can't put out their secret that's why I love them ;)
nice work matt.
In what part of Nevada did you film this Matt?
This is the car to pass people on the Autobahn :D I allways get kinda jealous even if a normal a7 shows me it's back ;)
love that sound
Audi's are just beautiful cars.
