I have to admit i was a Nintendo kid growing up and had no access to anything Sega. Finding so many hidden and not so hidden gems on the Genesis has definitely been one of the highlights to my gaming year. Thanks for the review Gents
I would argue that Golden Axe was the first "Genesis Plus" game. Even though it wasn't running on cart, it was essentially a ROM file with redbook audio spooled from the disc replacing the BGM. This was a pack-in for the early Sega CD units in North America as "4-in-1 Sega Classics". The other 3 games (or other 4 in the CD-X pack) use PCM.
Thanks again for another amazing in-depth video! I'm so happy I bought this and I am also pleased that so many people worked on this device together when this space can be a bit toxic at times. Love for SEGA brings us together!
27:48 Nice to see my save files of Dark Wizard went to good use. (I recognize the formation on the map) That was an unbelievable pain to get working right. I never did finish the final saves for each character 'cause I never could beat the damn game!
This year has been fantastic for the Sega Genesis. Finally getting much deserved attention and care at least from talented engineers. It'll always be neglected in terms of mainstream appreciation but at least fans can enjoy the system in different ways now.
I have every Nintendo Console I want to have hooked up and ready to play at a moments notice. Nintendo guy all the way. But I am really tempted to get a Sega Genesis. This device is making that temptation even stronger.
This is awesome! Until now, the only interest I had in the Sega CD I ever had was for Snatcher and Final Fight. Now this opens up a world of possibilities, especially with that Genesis + feature!
Took me a few minutes to realise you were saying "BUP folder" and not Butt Folder. This Mega SD seems real cool. Especially the potential for those MD+ games. Street of Rage 2 sounded rad. Maybe someone could do a Doom 32X one that removes the fart sounds and replaces them with music instead.
Every time you said "BUP" folder, I head "BUTT" folder and got a good chuckle from it. Jokes aside, another great, comprehensive video like always. And I learned some things I didn't know about the Mega SD, some things that make me not pause as much at the price; though, still too rich for my blood at the moment.
I have a model one and have always considered gatting a Sega CD for it, for the price I could just get a Mega SD and not have to deal with used possibly faulty systems and games and the features are really useful. Thanks for the overview.
The Mega Sg/Mega SD combo has made my retro-gaming life complete. I'm so happy that I don't need to spend time and money repairing drives now. Love all that sweet Sega CD music in this episode :)
@@mylifeingaming Yeah I can imagine. Tossing discs into my CD player to listen to the redbook audio was one of my favourite things to do with these games back in the day :)
I bought this for a PAL Mega Drive 2 (European version of the Genesis 2) a while ago. Apparently Terraonion is now using an Intel FPGA for the MegaSD which differs from the previous revision and it didn't play well with their old firmware. So it seems like they made a new firmware to fix exactly that. But at least in my case the new firmware didn't help either and actually made matters worse as it caused the Terraonion main menu to freeze almost instantly before even starting up any games. After directly requesting a rollback firmware from them and installing it, the Terraonion menu now works but all the MD games I've tried so far freeze within just a couple of minutes of playtime usually. My attempts at getting in touch with them and receiving help have not been very successful either and it remains doubtful whether I can get a full refund from the online store where I bought it (always check with the store first whether you can give it back if it doesn't work!). Just thought I'd let anybody know who has a PAL MD2 and is thinking about getting one of these. I'd try the Terraonion Discord first and ask Terraonion if they can guarantee proper operation for your specific MD2 hardware revision. From what I've read other users on their Discord server have similar issues. Terraonion aren't exactly transparent about compatibility as their website/wiki doesn't state anything about which revisions of the MD2 do not work with the MegaSD. It says "supports Megadrive / Genesis" on their product information page. So they are claiming full compatibility with all existing MD/Genesis hardware revisions without giving any indication that compatibility might be limited. They must already have noticed that several customers have these kind of problems but can't seem to be bothered to put up a disclaimer on the product page warning about the issue. So far my impression of their customer support has been poor. They do not seem to care much if at all whether their product works for all their customers. Yes, I'm aware that the product works flawlessly for some people. Well, it doesn't work at all for others (like me).
I have the intel version and I attempted to install the latest firmware revision and it actually bricked my megasd. Trying to figure out if I can get a replacement now.
This has been an amazing year for the Genesis, and it's made me a very happy 40 year old boy. For now, I can't justify one of these, but once the lense in my Sega CD goes out? I'm totally there. One thing that's funny to me is how none of these carts work to their fullest potential through a 32x. Like they're trying to tell us something. But, how else can I make an amazing retro gaming stack of Sonic 3 on Sonic and Knuckles on a Game Genie on a 32x on a Genesis on a Sega CD?
You can't blame Terra Onion for loading an encrypted bitstream into the Spartan 6 FPGA. VHDL development is very expensive and easy to reproduce/clone otherwise.
I've watched a number of videos from this channel. I love the content, and it's very high-quality production. One thing I wish you did - PLEASE when showing video of games (either single or side-by-side comparisons) you are great at identifying the SYSTEM you are showing, but it would be great to know the GAME you are using as an example. Maybe at the top? Some of these games are not common or even from a different region and it would be nice to be seen what it is.
Great episode. That smooth scaling functionality looks nice. I've been telling myself I don't need this device, but smoother sections in Batman Returns and Soul Star makes it more tempting.
From an architectural standpoint I don't think the FPGA can perform the same math calculations and polygon rendering as the hitachi CPUs in the 32X. Even if it could be emulated correctly I debate whether it's worth the time to the terraonion developers to code emulation for the very very small library of games. Perhaps in a very late software update since they did add Neo Geo CD capability to the Neo Geo cart they developed. However there are a lot more NeoGeo CD games....
I first tout that sega cd games had to be modded and converted into clusterchain file formats along with other comprimizes in order to make them work on the genesis via a everdrive, but likely this amezing cartride saves the need for modding those games to make them work on the genesis via the cartride slot.

Should probably correct that it will be possible to play those CD 32X games with a future adapter that allows the Mega SD to connect to the normal side ext slot on the Genesis. I've watched several videos about the Mega SD over the past month, but this one tipped me over the edge. I'm probably going to sell a load of my old games (maybe even my Mega CD) to buy this and a Mega SG.
@@RedArremer I'm struggling to find these, my Google skills must be minimal. I figured there must be a forum or something, I'd like to look into making some Mega Drive Plus titles myself.

Terraonion said this could take up to 3 weeks but it’s been 4 now, going to give it another week before I start raising a stink.

MLIG, today marks the 20th anniversary of ths Sega Dreamcast's release. Please, pppllleeeaaassseee, PLEASE make a video on it! Its way too important a system for the Culture, & needs your style!
Great vid. I haven't done any exact measurements but one complaint is the saving and loading of game states is far slower than an everdrive X7. I guess that's why they can offer 8 of them, because they are using the slower SD card directly instead of faster temporary memory?
Ok, I just went and did a rough test: MegaSD takes around 3.7 seconds to save, 3 seconds to load a state. Everdrive X7 takes around 0.3 seconds to save/load a state. Makes a difference if you're save scumming in mega-man....
Great video as usual, I didn't check out mine yet but will do asap after seeing this. BTW I noticed that they're Andorra based now because I has a nice tax to pay because of it not being part of Europe union, (I assumed it was because of the euro price) anyway another €70.00 extra now, which brings me to a total of €320.00 (i.e. $352.00 US) ah well that's the price you have to pay for being a Sega fan.
@@RedArremer Yeah it sucks big time and you're right, I do blame my country for this.... Maybe it's a way of control, so that I don't go berserk on a shopping spree.
Great episode as always. You get something that other reviewers don't regularly get. This is emulation also. Some may call it HW emulation, it may be way more accurate than by SW but is emulation nonetheless. And if I had that money to spend I might buy it, don't particularly agree on how they manage the firmware but still. Where I live you'll find a unicorn eating 4 clover leafs before a working sega cd at a normal price.
I hope that Terra Onion make a PC Engine SD Rom that is the size of a HuCard that will allow people to play PC Engine CD Rom and TurboGrafx CD games on the TurboExpress/PC Engine GT and the PC Engine Shuttle.
it will be perfect if Mega SD can play 32x or CD32x games without needing real 32x addon, it just like "all in one genesis package" in a single cartridge.
About your video on cartridge save file preservation - the Retrode has been unavailable for some time now. They shut down production and nobody has taken it up in years.
[Try4ce] It's actually come back around. I'm not sure if they are available right this second, but Coury bought his on Stone Age Gamer back in April or May.

For Sega CD fans, if you have never played "Dune" ( no, not the RTS Dune, Battle for Arakkis on Genesis) you have got to play it. A hidden gem IMO. It starts a little slow but It's my favorite game for the system and it never gets mentioned in any review for the Sega CD that I've seen.
Well I dunno about that... The CD Add-On for the PC Engine included a large amount of added RAM which greatly enhanced what the system was capable of. This would have been a simple and yet smart way for Sega to have approached the Sega CD as well and would have reduced the cost.
This device is pretty awesome, been thinking about picking one up for myself, especially since I never got around to getting a Genesis Everdrive. I hope some one comes out with a 32x Cart next as well (that will work without the hardware), so that everything pre-Saturn is finally easily playable and can be preserved.
The nice thing with Sega CD is that it plays CD-Rs since the system pre-dated piracy by a few years so there was no copyright protection on the system. So if you have a CD burner and a working Sega CD, it's a cheaper option than buying the Terra Onion
@@victor.elkins No, the soundchip of the genesis isn't producing the sound in the case of the fm soundchip emulation. There the final audio signal comes directly from the mega sd/everdrive. In the case of genesis games, i guess you could say, audio "information" is sent from the mega sd/everdrive to the original soundchip of the console, which then produces the final audio signal. Edit: It might not be "information sent", but perhaps the soundchip reads the rom... 😂 I have no clue about thess things.
@@victor.elkins Yes, flashcarts are emulating SMS FM audio since it is not natively supported in the Genesis/MD (only SMS PSG audio is). As such, there's always room for improvement, meaning future firmwares can be released with more accurate SMS FM emulation.
I'm sure the person that made the proper x7 FM module could be talked to about sharing it for the MegaSD. Since that code was made by a community member and not Krikzz himself.
“CDs deteriorating”? No, they deteriorate from improper use like if you leave them out in oxygen for a very long time, see disc rotting or CD bronzing but luckily it is a rare occurrence if you take very good care of your discs and have them working for years to come but if that does happen, I think you can get it resurfaced, a rotted disc or scratched disc can be resurfaced, it’s not hopeless, I learned it from The Gaming Historian. And you keep forgetting to mention: whether you want to fix the disc drive or use an ODE, it’s up to you. You should expect a lot of yelling from that.
All discs will eventually get disc rot, no matter how you look after it. It will take a very long time, but the glue is destined to separate at some point.
Hey Coury, Just got a Genesis (Model 1) for the first time a couple of months ago, and I have had an itch to get the SEGA CD of course, the problem I’ve had is the hardware has also risen in price. That said, I think I would still stick with getting the real deal because I do want to get some CDs there that are not very expensive such as Sonic CD and Ecco the Dolphin 1 and 2; I think the latter is especially worth it with its New Age music giving it a full experience. Regardless, this is still a good solid-state solution for those that look for longevity over authenticity. Cheers!
Yup, I'm also waiting for Krikzz to release his version. Got the SD2SNES Pro, and very happy with it. The idea of having to register an account just to download the newer firmware for the Mega SD, and having said firmware tied to the cart's serial number kind of turns me off. The SD2SNES is open source, which means that anyone with the knowledge can contribute. But more importantly, it ensures the project's survival. We're not dependent on one single entity to provide us with updates. We can build them ourselves (and change things if we want), because we have the "blueprints". That's an attitude I can get behind, and if it means having to wait a bit longer for Krikzz' version to come out, that's fine with me.
As far as the 32X games, I think someone needs to make an FPGA based 32X system, but actually get it endorsed by Sega, like RetroBit did with their controllers, and call the system....... . . *drum roll* . . (wait for it) . . The Sega Neptune! Just imagine the marketing. "After 25 years, the Sega Neptune is finally within orbit and ready to own!"
@@leadbones Half of the appeal of the Neptune when they were first advertising it was full Genesis backwards compatibility. Think of it as simply another Mega SG with an additional feature.

I've watched several videos about the Mega SD over the past month, but this one tipped me over the edge. I'm probably going to sell a load of my old games (maybe even my Mega CD) to buy this and a Mega SG.
I wish I could get CDDA from the right channel from my MegaSD.
Awesome video, as usual! I'll definitely be getting one!
Can I just say I appreciate the G ‘N G music continuously playing past its screen presence.
So any idea where you can get those mega plus cd enhanced soundtracks?
You download them from the Internet. :-P
Nice thanks! I did manage to find those soundtracks in the end. I'm not sure I prefer SoR2's one.
@@RedArremer I'm struggling to find these, my Google skills must be minimal. I figured there must be a forum or something, I'd like to look into making some Mega Drive Plus titles myself.
Perfect timing, i just purchased one 10 days ago and its going to be delivered in a day or two (very quick delivery!) I have no real solder skills but thinking of replacing my PAL Mega Drive oscilator with a NTSC one as it looks easy so I get full experience
gentarofourze I’m jealous, I pre-ordered in late July (pretty late to the party but still pre-release) and it has been presumably sitting in Andorran customs for almost a month waiting to be released to DHL to be shippied to me. I keep checking the DHL page but it just keeps saying “item doesn’t exist”. Terraonion said this could take up to 3 weeks but it’s been 4 now, going to give it another week before I start raising a stink.
@@McGuinty2 Actually, having the same issue it said dispatched last week but DHL say it doesn't exist! I guess I was underestimating the timescale!
@@McGuinty2 After my shock today you may be in less rush, been hit with a £57 customs charge! I stupidly assumed being from Europe and currency being the Euro I wouldn't be charged, if I had known I would never of bought it.
gentarofourze I got mine last week and it was only $33 Canadian, which is much less than what you paid when you factor the exchange rate. Sorry to hear about that.
It sucks to be European in this regard. I feel for you guys, but you only have your own countries to blame.
Speaking of SEGA appreciation, it's not on Genesis, but this has been a great year for Yakuza too. 😁
I really want to play Streets of Rage 2 in MD+ mode! Even though it has amazing FM soundtrack already!
@@mylifeingaming check again - I checked before April or May, but even more recently I checked around June and it's now gone with no sign of ever coming back :( I saw one being scalped on eBay, that's about it.
Such a thorough review, thank you!
All you're doing there is continuing to wear out the laser in your unit, but go ahead.
@@firstdegreehurrdurr How does playing a CD-R wear your Sega CD laser out faster than playing regular Sega CD games?
Which Fist of "The North Star"/"Hokuto no Ken" game is that at 9:53?
The FM Soundchip Emulation seems much better on the mega everdrive x7, hopefully in the future this will be refined for the mega sd.
@@victor.elkins Correct, assuming the flashcart isn't set to emulate SMS FM audio, which is not available in a Genesis/MD.
I'm sure the person that made the proper x7 FM module could be talked to about sharing it for the MegaSD. Since that code was made by a community member and not Krikzz himself.
my goal is to get both a Mega SG and a Mega SD.
I'll have to sell some of my organs at a shady black market first but eh....
Tech looks amazing
3:08 that moment the sega turned into a power ranger megazord
Another great video.. thanks guys
Brilliant device - congrats to all that made it possible
Great episode guys!
12:27 what game is this? Never seen it before.
What about the Best Version Of Earthworm Jim?
Awesome vid as always.
Have a question, how many inches is that lcd tv on minute 5:05????
what game is shown at 14:48? Looks cool!
I'll emulate sega CD on retroarch for the price difference.
Happy enough with what my Mega SG offers
True. For that price, I would expect a CD reader as well, to allow using actual CDs.
Woah! Eddie McClintock is in Star Strike? Awesome!
Awsome review! What game is that at 21:15? Looks interesting
This helped my get my MegaSD going. Make sure to uncheck the enable cd audio option on the MegaSG
Awesome overview!
Another great Episode, thank you!
Cheers!
Krikzz just tweeted that he's making progress on his version! Gonna be sweet to see some competition, baby!!!

The Sega Neptune!
Just imagine the marketing. "After 25 years, the Sega Neptune is finally within orbit and ready to own!"
Oh yeah, because there are so many great games for the 32X. Unbelievable that nobody has jumped on that HOT idea.
@@leadbones Half of the appeal of the Neptune when they were first advertising it was full Genesis backwards compatibility. Think of it as simply another Mega SG with an additional feature.
Thanks for the video, looks like I'm going to have to upgrade my MegaEverdrive X7
Popful mail unworked.
I see you are also a man of culture.
Nah, the Night Trap stutter is no sega CD glitch, your console is just possessed. Nothing a little bit of holywater couldn´t fix.
