      I just caught this video and heard what Sowell had to say about the NYC "Rubber Room". As someone who has researched these "Rubber Rooms" for close to a decade now, Sowell was indeed ignorant by the broad statement he made about them. He labeled all teachers who have had the misfortune of being assigned there as "incompetent." Yes, some are, but not all. Some have been victims of false accusations or abusive principals. That is a fact and is well documented. Another fact is that Sowell was indeed not knowledgeable about the extent of his own ignorance by making that broad claim. He was, at the time of that statement, simply not aware of facts.

    • @MichaelJMacIsaac
      @MichaelJMacIsaac 4 роки тому +13

    • @Maskalunas
      @Maskalunas 6 років тому +58

      truthseeker215, I think it's a reference to a statistic I've heard him point out a few times. Basically, there was a significant percentage of black children living within two-parent households 100 years after slavery was abolished, but only 30 years after the social security act that percentage decreased dramatically. That's the context of the quote for you I guess.

    • @troylongo3099
      @troylongo3099 6 років тому +73

      Showing that welfare increased during the same time that Black families "disintegrated" is only establishing a temporal relationship between welfare and the Black family. But where is the *causal* relationship? Statistics 101: correlation is not causation. Two events happening during a similar time period does not automatically mean that event A caused event B.

    • @Tonytaru
      @Tonytaru 6 років тому +60

      Troy Longo dude be careful. Too much fact makes them implode. I love how they ignore the impact that the war on drugs and other similar policies had on the community. But of course, since black people are so lazy if you offer them free shit they will choose to not work and just free load. They never do these types of comparisons between welfare and the white community even though white people make up the majority of welfare recipients.

      @till-ulrichhepp8113 6 років тому +12

      Minimum wage eliminates business models that rely on cheap and ineffective labor as they drive up prices. I do not understand why Dr. Sowell puts so much emphasis on it always being bad as he is also insisting there be utmost education for all (plus disciplining of those who are disrupting and dragging others down) because if this is the case, then there is in fact more economic growth as new technologies and business models grow much quicker. The same goes for regulations and regulatory prevention e.g. of excessive rental or housing prices - of course these must be temporary and be reviewed regularly ut there are way too many market defects that are often created on purpose and there is the possibility to curb this so why not do it? Particularly when so much accurate monitoring and analyzing technology stands ready.

      J Sickels if you ever even read the Bible or any of the proverbs, the Bible is logical thought. It teaches you that right and wrong and facts are the only thing that matters. Opinions and feelings are irrelevant when it comes to right and wrong. You think like this because you were brainwashed into thinking that religion is bad. I used to be you, not even 5 months ago. Thought the Bible was a load of horse shit. THEN I READ IT. If you want to know the difference between right and wrong, start with proverbs. Logical thought and reasoning is what is right, but what is wrong is to judge someone’s thoughts before considering their thoughts.

      spot light Did you know that Nigerians have a higher average income than whites in America? They are still black, yet they have over come racism.
      Did you know that all Asians, or any type, out earn whites by a significant amount? They are still minorities, yet they have risen above any racism possibly affecting them.
      Did you know that there are pockets of black communities that are rich as whites, sometimes even Asians, specifically because they never received welfare? They have risen above everything.
      The only denominator of black poverty is welfare dependence, not racism. This dependence is pushed by the same party that literally brought slavery to America, invented the KKK, and inspired the nazis- how do you know that this same political party didn’t just find another way to enslave blacks, via welfare dependence?

      @spot light Dr. TS is one of the great mind in America. Young people whose parents are Nigerian in America has the highest high school graduation rates in the city I used live in and I've seen them make more than whites averagely after graduation from college. Racism is not as prevalence as you believed. There are ethnic discrimination in most parts of the world. Black Americans did better after the civil war up till the 60s whenever LBJ give us war against poverty. Blacks who works for the DNC are the race hustlers you need to be worried about and I won't mention their names.

      spot light Sure there are grievances. Like how bandaids don’t match black peoples skin, or how white kids like to dress up as Indians for halloween.
      Thing is, you don’t realize the fact that if any groups of minorities are able to make it to the top, (according to averages) even if they are legal immigrants who are “special”, shows that race isn’t the factor in success anymore. Meanwhile, single motherhood correlates very well with poverty, and the _average_ black single motherhood rate is 75%. (Compared to 25% whites) Keep in mind, single motherhood is directly subsidized by the government via welfare. (Intentionally or unintentionally, you decide) This keeps blacks from succeeding, due to the fact that they are getting horrible upbringings and horrible parents.
      And one more thing- racism, where the perpetrator is some individual citizen, especially when it is almost universally frowned upon, is nothing compared to government mandated, institutionalized racism- such as diversity hiring quotas, affirmative action in higher education, and (this one isn’t government mandated, yet) the idea in many politician’s heads that it’s a good thing that whites are being demographically replaced in a country their ancestors founded.

      A great thinker, a great scholar, a great philosopher. But a President, I don't think so. President Trump is the benchmark of a great leader of a country. He gets the job done, either himself or delegates others to do it, or they are gone.

It is a place to start some thoughts about racism in our country/world with your family, friends, classmates etc. Dr Sowell explains this misuunderstanding of Systemic Racism extremely well. I wish he was 25 yrs younger, we need more people like him. Thanks for this video Mr. Rubin.

    This 71 yo Australian thinks Mr Sowell is just wonderful. He is so vitally 'spot on'. He is so insightful; so thoroughly informed about processes and of course the economics and fiscal practices. I love his historicity and humour. I've been catching up on his much earlier videos - amazing consistency and pertinency over the decades. Like his comments re the media not be informed but "misinformed" but it is also up to each of us to get some orientation to 'facts' and context. We can't all 'win' - thank goodness. I thought Dave was deeply respectful and honoured by his guest. Very good.

      He's done a lot of interviews over the phone recently (Shapiro, Crowder etc), and on syndicated broadcast way back in the day but I don't know of anything recent he's done in person. He seems a very private person.

      Hes done a few on the "liberty pen" youtube channel in recent years which id recommend, but I think he's just too old these days to be flying all over the country to be doing big interviews. He just wants to take a step back and enjoy his twilight years I think

      Smiling Archer comparing Crowder's segment to Rubin's is like comparing one-pump chump to marathon man. Just because chump finished first, doesn't make him the winner.

    • @kahwigulum
      @kahwigulum 6 років тому +3

      I noticed that, too. But I think that when Crowder got Sowell, it was by phone and was an impromptu interview that didn't have a ton of planning. He said as much in his intro to the interview even though he said he had always wanted to interview Sowell. I wonder if Crowder heard about Rubin's then-future interview and didn't want to be outdone. He did work at Fox after all and that was always their strategy. I would much rather watch an in-person interview than I would listen to a telephone interview. It's weird to watch someone so brilliant as Sowell being interviewed by a comedian. I watch Crowder for laughs, not interviews with economists. I watch Rubin when I want to watch interviews with economists.

    • @hueco5002
      @hueco5002 6 років тому +5

      I like Crowder's show - the first to market thing just struck me as funny. His phone interview got me looking for other interviews that Sowell has done - found a few short phone interviews to listen to. But, I'm really happy Dave sat down for the full monty. It's crazy to watch Sowell's old 1980's TV appearances on Firing Line and then to realize, without Dave, there'd be no-one doing similar here in 2018. Make TV Great Again?
