Today we're gonna take a look at one of those concepts I completely missed in my early days of playing guitar. It's a shame because it's one of those things that makes such a difference between a typical guitar player and a true musician. This is some thing I've learned from guys like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and… Lionel Richie!

I grew up in the golden age of shred, the 80s. In an era where every new player seemed to push the technical envelope, the one who stood out most (to me) was Satriani. He was a guy with great technique and imagination who really focused on the simple melodies which are memorable and connect with people on an emotional level. I love hearing insane technique, but if it's not in service of an idea or conveying a feeling, it tends to get boring after the initial WOW has worn off. That's something which rings truer the older I get.

Just too cool! What a great approach to a lesson. You hear instructors all the time say: play as if you are singing, but they don't tell you how. Real world teaching with a great tutorial that gets right into the meat of it! Thanks, big time!

I just wanted to stop the video in the middle of watching and let you know you gave me an "AH HA" moment. Of course we remember that melody but not the guitar lick! Wow! Duh! Great point! Totally shifted my thought process!

all of the best shredders knew to mix melody and speed thats what made you take notice of them and remember them out from the crowd.
i've always tried to find melodies its the fast parts that i still have to work on even after all these years but its good to remind people about this since you can work on speed for so long that you forget about the basics,i've seen plenty of players like that who work on technique for so long and yet cant control their bends and slow down from time to time.

How many guitar teaches on the internet? 100? 200? Some really great ones, have no doubt. No matter: NONE of them teach from the unique direction you do, DW. I am without fail always enriched by your lessons. Thank you.

Thank you for this wonderful lesson. We can all quote our favorite movie lines and rarely are they complicated, but everyone recognizes them immediately. Music is is really just like that. Play your instrument as if you’re telling a story. Have something to say, phrase your sentences as best you can for clarity and impact, include a punchline or two and (this is important) use punctuation for shape and pacing.

I agree with you. Long time viewer. I've been with you since the beginning. You've helped me out more than any other guitarist on UA-cam. When I play modes I still think about traveling to different countries LOL.

The older I get the more I wish I would have focused more on chords and harmony. It all comes down to harmony. I got obsessed with scales and modes and totally ignored the other half of the instrument. That half that is infinitely more rich, and interesting. I think chords and harmony within the context of the song should be the focal point of any budding guitarist. Then the licks should be the top end. I always enjoy the melodic content you come up with. It's just so much more compelling than listening to someone blaze through a stock lick. Thanks buddy!

Uli jon roth and mahogany rush frank marino they both shredded. Before van Halen. Like christmas carols, screaming melodies peircing the ears melting tone. Sonic slabs of snariling black marble. Most vicious among attacks ,sqaulid habitat. But listening to records is not the same. They must be seen live. Yngwie didn't know uli Roth until the 80s. Interview 'yngyang said" Uli jon roth is as good as guitar player gets. Serious. The only thing i can compare mahogany rush and uli roth live would be similar to 'Once upon time in the west' shawn lane. All three were heavy hendrix influinced. joe satriani and steve vai same deal. Only Satriani mentioned Axis bold love as his number one album 87, 88? Guitar practicing musician.. Every guitar player picked thier favorite albums. At that time, even Dave mustang favorite was Jimi Hendrix. But they all picked (are you experienced)or electric land lady. Only two guitarist on list out of thirty guitarist (mostly shrapnel guys, good month) maybe two guys who did not pick Hendrix albums. Joe Satriani is smart saying (Axis) bible for rhytm n blues chops. Jimi took everything up a notch, the same way Tim Henson today with right hand techniques

Most people don’t learn correctly. The people everyone knows about somehow learned the secrets correctly so they could implement them into music, songs.

I know what you mean David; you're so right. On another, but related note, I find it quite amazing that you never, ever mention Ritchie Blackmore in your videos. BB, Clapton, Beck, Page..... but never Blackmore? Really? He's never made any impact on you? Just asking.

Strange,... David, why did I get an email today referencing this video as if it's a new video, for today? This is a 4 month old video that I've seen. Not that I can't view an older video, I CAN, it's just weird. You usually if not always send links to your new videos as you put them out, not old videos. Any reason you'd send a link to this, TODAY?

How many of us could you actually win over? Hopefully, enough to bring you a great success. That's my wish for you! Best of luck to you, David. From: John W.
