Yes! Finally an approach to chord harmony that was already in my subconscious being articulated well. Thank you David.
I've tried not to learn too much about music theory. Just enough to understand my music but not so much that I get stuck in cliche patterns. When writing a solo I sing it in my head and work it out by trial and error until I've built something interesting. That means I'm horrible at improvising solos but the solos I write are unique and interesting to listen to.
But hey, that's just me.

How do I get to the place where I can visualize entire modes across the fretboard?
Just start with one you like and explore a few shapes on the first 3 strings. Just little by little. It will happen faster than you think!
