- On November 18, 2021 Long Play Music Films will finally release in Australia director Emer Reynolds’ much anticipated award-winning film about Thin Lizzy front man, Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away, which features thoughts from U2’s Adam Clayton, Metallica’s James Hetfield, Suzi Quatro, Huey Lewis, Midge Ure, and of course guitarist Scott Gorham. A few months ago on Phil Lynott’s birthday, Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips spoke to Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham about the documentary and his life with Phil and the band. #AustralianMusician
I love Scott Gorham. I talked to him on the phone. True Gentleman
One of my guitar heroes when I picked up a guitar in 1978 and decided on Gibson Les Paul due to that heavy sound they had. Cool dude...looks like an old Dutch sea captain now, and he still play great live.
Lucky
Such a likable guy Scott and an important member of Lizzy💚
Scott's my favourite thin lizzy guitarist, really tasteful player and super underrated!
What makes Scott Gorham "underrated"? Please elaborate.
@@FrozenHero2010 For me he writes the most melodic and tasteful solo's and deserves a bit more recognition than he gets.
@@stuff_n_tings6885 He was the sound of Thin Lizzy. He doesn't have to be Hendrix to be recognised.
@@FrozenHero2010 I'm not saying he does, I agree with you that he was the sound of Thin Lizzy but from my experience everybody talks about Moore or Robertson when referring to Lizzy guitarists (who are obviously outstanding) but I just think he could get more props, that's all.
@@stuff_n_tings6885 What doesn't get mentioned is that Scott Gorham kept the band afloat whenever there was a vacancy "stage right". That's not _underrated,_ that's _understated._
My Belief is there is a reason why we do what we do and why we meet certain people and obviously you were meant to meet Phil and that is awesome because you guys changed the Musical direction back then and didnt sell out to disco and I loved the band for that ,back in those days we all were scared that the Music as we knew it had almost met its end almost like now , im sure there are some young guys that will bring it all back ,I grew up in the best years imaginable ,God Bless you Scott your a little older but keep the music alive as long as you can because Phil is looking down with a huge grin !!!1 RIP Phil we all miss you so much brother
Great interview. Love my Thin Lizzy and always wanted hair like Scott's from 1975-79 era.
we ALL wanted that hair!!!!
Great to see and hear Scott talking about the band and his experiences again!
I was also at the Melbourne show in 1978. Lucky to end up front row right in front of Gary Moore! Great memories. Thanks for the interview.
This is really well made and great take documentary about Phil and the band.Well conducted conversation and Scott is an excellent interview which he also proves in the film.
Scott is a cousin of mine, but wouldn’t remember me. We are related in the Gorham side. He’s seven years older than I am, and by the time my sis and I spent some time with his brother, Scott was already really into his music. I remember the family as being really sweet. (Cindy Painter)
Scott is my hero. I have cancer but my wish is to one day meet him.. bless you both
@@carterwidmor1379
Thank you. I wish you peace and healing.
@@carterwidmor1379 YOU CAN DO IT!!!! I personally fought it alone with food. But took it really early. Nevertheless, look into what can hurt further or what can help your body specifically. Looking into our own illnesses can help. Wish you really well man!
Scott has always been one of my guitar “heroes”, as is Brian Robertson. I’ve been a fan of the band since I first heard The Boys Are Back In Town back in the 70’s. I remember buying Live And Dangerous when it came out in 78. I just got the 8 cd reissue of it the other day and it’s utterly amazing!
All the best and have a great holiday season!
Cheers!
This is absolutely fantastic !!!!!
Scott we love you !!
I admire the amount respect that Huey Lewis shows for Phil
Probably because Phil gave him his start in the business. Just like he did with Mark Knofler, The Boomtown Rats, Midge Ure and Ultravox, etc.
Huey played harp on a Lizzy track I believe?
@@MrPnew1 He toured with Thin Lizzy as part of the band playing harp before he made it big.
Poor Scott has been answering all these questions for the past 20 years now...
Yep, I know the stories backwards but still love hearing them
Best of luck Scott, saw you guys in 79 , good to see your still out there v..!
Love scott gorham !!! What a slick style !! You can always tell its him thats playing !!!🖖🤘🖖🤘
My biggest influence, being a mainly shredder guitarist. Love Scott. My all time band being Thin and then Black Star. Amazing dude and guitarist
I think he did best guitar work from 1974 to 1983 after that it has lost the swagger and feel / starting doing that vibearm and got lost in horrible solos /
Wish he could get back and listen to what he did inthe 70tees with Thin Lizzy it was very good the solos fits the songs perfect😎
@@terjeweum3677 agree, but maybe he wanted to make a break with the Les Paul's.
Totally underrated guitarist and together with Robbo they where unbeatable /inthe best 4 piece lineup in Rock /
That was magic
@@terjeweum3677 totally agree the soundtrack to my teens. My uncle gave me the jailbreak album on vinyl in 1987. Then my mum bought me live and dangerous...such great memories
Live and Dangerous is in my ears best live album ever I really want that new boxset with those 8 conserts 👍
I have only just discovered this, what a great interview! I was also at the 1978 Melbourne Concert at the Music Bowl the day before Sydney. What a great concert for a then 18 year old Lizzy fan. I still watch footage of the Sydney Concert and often listen to Live and Dangerous and it always makes me wonder what could have been if Phil had managed to get healthy again. Thanks for the reminisce!
We need Scott...Robbo....Downey...
Together pls
Without Phil, what’s the point? Downey doesn’t want to tour in his 70s. Who can blame him?
Thank You Scott ❤
As an Aussie fan,I just want to hug him! A huge mancrusch!🤘🤘🤘
That concert at the Sydney Opera house looks wild.
Phil Lynott is a hero of mine, not only for his incredible talent, but also, as an American of Black and Irish heritage myself, it's really nice to see someone so publicly out there representing those of us from that background. Additionally, I highly applaud Scott Gorham for telling people to get vaccinated so we can all get back to life, makes me admire him all the more!
There needs to be a film made about Phil lynott....it would be wicked in my eyes. Obviously with a sad ending ..but one hell of a ride... the queen film was OK.. thought freddie was abit wierd ..we need a lizzy film
Absolutely we do !
Scott is my hero.
Scott is my favorite guitarist from Thin Lizzy! Yeah Robbo and Moore had flash, but Scott's playing was always more laid-back and melodic. Very tasteful
Scott seems a really nice guy
He absolutely is.....I met him about 15 years ago when he came into my picture framing shop in West London and he was totally charming.
Another great Greg interview
Woh woh woh, history lesson time. Thin Lizzy was not a UK band fronted by an Irishman. They were an Irish band from day one.
The best band out of Ireland, hands down!!!
Great documentary.
Maybe you'd wish to join Brian Downey's, Alive and Dangerous band Scott. Then Sykes too. The singer/bass player is very sympathetic. And there you go, a bonafide Thin Lzzy tour.
Wow! Great Supertramp story!
I'm Glasgow and loved Ultravox but had no idea Mitch was in Thin Lizzy
I seen scott in 2015 in Newcastle when he was playing in black star riders and they played the boys are back in town they opened up for def leppard one hell of a person and ne hell of a musician
I loved his 'own' band 21Guns, their first album was nice!
His mother, Philomena Lynott is Irish and his father, Cecil Parris is Afro-Guyanese from Georgetown, Guyana.
Scots version of Holy War and Emerald is just the best, I still can't play it like he does 35 tears later...
Finest axe man I ever laid my ears on
one of my fave guitar players so original and very underrated 🎸❤
1st class guy.
Scott was a ace guitarists 🎶🎶🎸🎵🎵 🤘👍
I had Scotts hair when I saw him on the back jail break I said I'm growing my hair down to my waste extremely cool guy
Scott is a relative of mine if his grandparents are from Galway, connemara, Our family name is Gorham, Pauline Gorham
Anybody that knows thin Lizzy knows Scott Gorham is the ultimate guitar player.
Scott created the Thin Lizzy twin guitar sound.
Tremendous Stuff
No offence but Lizzy was certainly not a UK band. Its not hard to find several interviews where Phil Lynott corrected the English interviewers who did call Lizzy an English band.
i’m sure phil would’ve corrected him lol
With all the tutorials and materials available these days, and 3ven 20 years ago, I ve always wondered how guys like Scott learned in their time, whether they had any kind of "instruction" or just put on records, buy a guitar and learn out of sheer talent.
The latter.
What do you mean Scott joined a UK band? Thin Lizzy is an Irish band.
He didn’t die in his house.
The robbo delay story ? Actually there is some harmony guitar even on nightlife.
Scott Gorham comes across as a really nice guy. Nothing like the lead guitarist ego manic stereotype.
Joni Mitchell is a grandma now
The band was Irish not a uk band. Do your research .
IF SOME OF THE CELEBRITIES WOULD JUST USE A LITTLE HAIR COLOR THEY WOULDNT LOOK SO DAMN BAD.....TAKE AT LEAST 30 YEARS OFF OF THEIR LOOKS.
What kind of person concerns themselves with that?
No, once a person ages, his/ her skin colour - texture also changes , colouring the hair has the adverse effect -it actually ages a person's appearance .
I DISAGREE THE RIGHT COLORING CAN DO WONDERS I HAVE SEEN IT.@@cymro6537
@@cymro6537not in every case.. sometimes yes.. sometimes no.
No, not at all. You're dealing here with someone who's pretty comfortable in their own skin and is probably more than aware that white and grey are just two colours; nothing more. And it also works for women: look at Emmylou Harris and Judy Collins. Of course in all three cases being exceptionally good looking in the first place does help somewhat.
Wonder if he regrets getting the jab now!
get robbo in for a interview its time he is heard not scott
Wise enough to stay away from drugs. Drugs are undoubtedly for losers.
The man’s name is Lynott - pronounced LIE-nit, not Linnit. FFS.
Lie - not
Scott is a legend ....he was superb in the band & funny as fk him n Phil 2gether legendary 👏 🙌 👌 big up Robbo to
I met Scott Gorham at the DNA Lounge & at Harlow's, Black Star Riders autographed my CDs & took pictures, good times! \m/⛧666⸸🎻🪕🎸🥁🤘🤟
SUPERTRAMP ❤❤❤
