WHY MACERATION IS IMPORTANT FOR FRAGRANCES? || HOW TO GET THE "WOW" PERFORMANCE

  • Not a review, but I did some digging into why sometimes you don't get the "power" or "wow" performances from independent fragrance houses e.g. Dua, Alexandria and others from the same niche. I saw some good fragcomm members come up with this and I practically applied it to find out if maceration is a myth or a bust. Find out in this video WHY MACERATION IS IMPORTANT FOR FRAGRANCES? I also shared how the maceration process can help you achieve that wow performance.
    P.S.: I've shared my personal experience. Due to the nature of the ingredients and many other variables at play, results might vary.

    Thanks for emphasizing the need to get air in the bottle first. A lot of these UA-camrs miss on this key step. Then people end up storing their unused bottles which does nothing.

      this is actually false. it will still macerate without getting air in the bottle. The opposite is recommended and that there should be the least air possible. This perfumer actually covered it in his video, and you can also see some questions he answer in the comments ua-cam.com/video/CLt1aanPI54/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ModernFragrance

      So I should hold my bottle upside down and pump a few times then put it in my cupboard for a while? I just got Khamrah so want to macerate it. I don’t want to wear it right now as I am taking a break to rest my nose for a week. It improves your ability to smell things after a small break. It is tempting to just wear it but I would feel a failure after I set myself to take a weeks break and this is day one 😂

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  Рік тому +2

      Nope. Spray while holding upright. No need to hold upside down. Khamrah doesn't need maceration. It's readily usable out of the box.

      @@brian19869 OK, thanks. I got a slight whiff as i did spray it upright last night before putting it in the cupboard and man from what i smelled, no wonder this is always sold out in the UK for the price. I honestly got a slight smell coming from the cupboard and was blown away. I can't wait to smell this full on! We all frags enthusiasts need to know about this. I have also experienced maceration even with weaker fragrances and I loved it. You said about 2-3 weeks but wait a year or 2, totally different story. That's why you don't need to pay absurd high prices for old formulation fragrances and buy new batches instead for a lot more decent prices. Over time the maceration will interfere and improve the fragrances a lot.
    Just like you said, use it a few times and just let it sit for a while, come back to it after some time and boom : surprise.

    Good point. I've noticed that most of my fragrances become stronger with time. I remember when I was dissapointed with Layton. It performed for 3-4 hours, now after few months it performs more than 8 hours. Similar thing happened to Herod. It is a beast now 12hrs. That is a cery frustrating situation especially when you paid that much. Some niche house customers have recently complained about bad performance and exactly what you said. I hope this process works on Amouage fragrances. If the formulation is not done properly then chances are maceration won't help too much, but it's worth taking a shot. Maybe you'll have to let it macerate for a longer time. I hope you get some good results.

    As I figured it out:
    maceration - Ingredients oils mixing,letting it's scent into alcohol until they become one. Most house do it at their facilities.
    Maturation is what we need. I usually take out 10ml in a decant to get more air in the bottle. Next step .... wait 😡 Some fragrances work after 3 weeks,heavy ingredient ones,sometimes need 2 months.

    • @brian19869

      Agreed on the waiting part. Sometimes 3 weeks & sometimes 3 months. Just need to be patient. I bought this newer batch of Initio Side Effect and noticed many things differed from the older batches. After several wearings, I left it untouched for many months and only then the depth amd character gradually came into existence. Yet, the omph that Side Effect used to have is way lesser than before.

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  2 місяці тому +3

      Usually, any good brand will have their fragrances sit and macerate for months before a release. However, there are instances when the brand will rush to get something in the market. We as consumers have no control over it. Each fragrance has it's own behavior pattern. There are ones that worked out just fine within 2-3 weeks (dramatic changes were noticeable) andnyet there were those that took 5-6 months before I got some solid outcome. It's all about experimenting with what you have in hand.

    Hey there , a very nice video.
    I am a bit skeptical about the process and made a post on Reddit in r/fragrances but sadly no one had a proper answer. I'mma paste that text here hope you'll clear my doubt regarding this.
    *Maceration/ Maturation*
    So there's that maceration/maturation phenomenal that I came to know about recently. So I thought I should follow the process for a couple of low performance fragrances that I have. But I'm confused and don't really know the actual science and concept behind maceration/maturation and I don't even know whether if these terms are technically the same or not. So let's assume I want to do this maceration or maturation whatever it is , so do I need to just let my fragrance bottle rest at a cool dark place for a span of time or I'll need to remove the cap or nozzle from the bottle and let it rest so that it's alcohol gets evaporated and the fragrance becomes more saturated and oxidized.
    Inshort, I am confused that whether this process is actually aimed to let the fragrance rest and mature so that it's content blends well or this process is meant to let the excess alcohol evaporate and oxidize the fragrance molecules ( I don't know what oxidation does to a fragrance lol ). Will only letting it rest and age do the trick or the main goal is evaporating the excess alcohol and oxidizing the perfume by removing the cap and nozzle. Thanks for reading!

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  11 місяців тому +6

      I'm very happy that you watched my content and came up with a question to get better clarification.
      First, I'll request you to watch my new video where I take a broader take on maceration and how it has affected various type of fragrances in my collection, be it absolute cheapie or $$$ niche. ua-cam.com/video/5HL7LO_G-Pg/v-deo.htmlsi=HPuiZ9K8rXBGhG2y
      To answer your questions.
      1. Let's keep things simple by considering only one term, maceration. It's the process where the chemical components in a fragrance get time blend well with each other.
      2. How to macerate a fragrance? Simple. Just grab a brand new bottle, do like 6-10 sprays on yourself and see if it performs and sort of smells like how your friends/reviewers say. If not, after that initial set of sprays, just put the bottle away in a cool dark place and for better results, let's not move it around.
      3. Do you need to keep it in a box or take off the cap and atomizer? Keeping it in a box is my recommendation. You DO NOT need to take off the cap and atomizer for maceration to take place. Remember, that nozzle is a valve and without pressing it, nothing goes in or our. That should clear your confusion as to why the alcohol won't evaporate.
      4. Oxidation? Every time you press that atomizer, a tiny bit of air does go in. It's extremely tiny, so no worries. This bit of air will certainly react with the aroma chemicals in the fragrance composition and definitely affect the way it smells especially if a bottle is preserved for a very long time (My other video that I mentioned should answer all that).
      I hope that clears you confusion and watching my other recent video will help you more since I used actual examples from my collection.

    • @X3alpha
      @X3alpha 11 місяців тому +2

      @@brian19869 thanks a lot for the detailed and timely explanation. You surely earned a sub and I'll watch that recommended video too . Don't mind if I ask 2 more questions.
      1) why are 6-10 sprays recommended and not more. I mean let's say if I've already used 30% of the juice from the bottle and then I put it on maceration, will it get over oxidized as there'd be more air inside the bottle and will eventually ruin the fragrance?
      2) What are your thoughts on keeping the perfume bottle in the refrigerator for maceration?
      Thank you 🙏 ❤️

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  11 місяців тому +1

      @X3alpha If you will notice, I mentioned about a brand new bottle and not a partial one. If it's a partial, by all means, just skip the initial spray part and leave the bottle undisturbed in a cool dark place. I'm sure your question about over-oxidation is answered in my other video. I do not recommend keeping fragrances in a refrigerator. Any fragrance is created to withstand a certain level of temperature variation. If you keep it in a fridge, then imagine the huge temperature difference when you take it out on a normal day. That is exactly what you're trying to avoid in the first place, i.e. extreme differences in temperature.
      Hope it answers you questions. 🙂

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  Рік тому +1

      Every time the atomizer is actuated, air seeps into the bottle. That's why any fragrance bottle if it's not finished soon enough will become oxidized and that happens cuz air did go in. When Insaid designer fragrances are ready to to, I meant that they are mostly prepared well ahead of time. See you will be ready to deal with a $500 bottle of fragrance, but be less patient with something that costs $70. So a designer fragrance will lose credibility and demand if they're not well-prepared before they hit the shelves.

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  Рік тому +11

      With or without box, doesn’t matter. With or without cap, doesn’t matter because the atomizer is sealed and air doesn’t go inside unless it’s actuated. 3 simple steps. One, do a couple of sprays when starting out. Two, put the bottle aside in a cool dark place, e.g. a closet. Three, try and not move the bottle around or spray from it within the next couple of weeks. Please bear in mind that each fragrance macerates at different rates. So, patience is key and there’s no fixed rule. 🙂 you can always test out your ways as well. Hope that helps.

    so Maceration doesnt work on designer fragrances?

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  Рік тому +1

      In my experience, not so much. When designer fragrances are released, they wouldn't want their products to be going thru some process. That will make buyers unhappy and brands lose out on the monetary gain. As for niche/other houses, the buyers are mostly people who are accustomed to such issues and are ready to go the distance. Take Creed for instance. Whoever buys a Creed fragrance, is most likely in the know about performance issues. Also, with a full retail price tag, only those who have an acquired taste will go for their items. Designer fragrances are prepared and processed well ahead of time so that it's in a ready-to-use condition. Well, if someone is patient and wants to experiment, is a whole different chapter. I hope that helps 🙂

      @brian19869  Рік тому

      Yes, if you preserve the designer fragrance bottle long enough (under favorable conditions) the fragrance does tend to change. Now whether it becomes richer or lasts longer (performance) will depend on the nature of the fragrance. I personally have a bottle of Bleu De Chanel EDP from back in 2016/2017. The juice has certainly turned darker and what's more interesting is that the top citruses are less prominent, but the base of heavier notes are more pronounced upon application. Longevity is still awesome on my skin. I also have a bottle of Acqua di Gio EDT from 2015 and nothing has changed about it over all these years.

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  Рік тому +2

      I wouldn't recommend refrigerating them. Remember, lower temperatures will essentially slow down the chemical process (and no need to keep contents in higher temps either) and the condensation that'll follow after you take out the bottle will be harmful. If you search, you'll always find how it's always said to use clean and dry things ro come in contact with the oil. Also,for oils to mature better, it should be tightly capped and left for days. Oils macerate over longer periods so you definitely need patience. Keeping the cap off will only allow the fragrance 5o escape and the oil to oxidize too much. Hope that helps.

      Let me clarify from what I understand. Maceration is letting the substances sit, mix and bond so that it "matures". As for the smell, every individual has a different skin chemistry. A fragrance that smells kinda sour to you might not be the same on another person. When the fragrance matures, yes, the scent profile might shift and longevity will vary. To answer your question, for brands like Dua and such, it's best to let 'em sit after some initial sprays.

      On a different note, sure, you can spray a few more then leave the bottle alone for some time. Just make sure you have an authentic bottle though, because a fake one will be up to no good. Hope that helps.

    • @brian19869

      Yes, of course. If you've done just that many sprays, you're totally cool. Just put the bottle away in a cool dark place and try not to move it for, say a month or so. See how it goes. The reason the atomizer smelled great was because the residual aroma chemicals just dried and remained there. They gotta mix more inside the bottle and that's why when you're spraying it, you don't get the expected aroma. Keep us posted.

    • @brian19869
      @brian19869  Рік тому +2

      Hey friend. Thank you for reaching out. Let's get one thing out of the way. If it's a spray bottle, having the cap on or off doesn't matter. That atomizer is sealed in and the valve prevents any air getting inside a bottle unless it's actuated/sprayed.
      Case 4 is the ideal one. Do like 6-10 sprays and keep the bottle away in a cool, dark place. Now, I understand the climatic factor, but let's say, you certainly have a place inside the house (closet, cupboard) where you keep clothes or stationery. Just leave the bottle in there, don't move it around. Let it sit.
      Regarding the rubbery smell, that's a whole different story. I'm not sure which fragrance you bought, but there are ingredients in a fragrance (even expensive ones) where the ingredient reacts with your skin and emits that kind of smell. Some middle-eastern fragrances that contain real oud (there are various oud types) that sometimes behave like that. Hope that helps.

    • @azman2040

      Don't bother to attempt this. You will just be stopping the process. The perfume requires temperature ranging from 40-60 deg, 3-4 hours daily to mature. If you don't own an ultrasonic machine, then I would strongly recommend leaving the perfume in room temperature as you might destroy certain sensitive notes with the temperature mentioned above. This way, it will take slightly longer to mature but much safer.

      Here’s the challenge. The designer fragrances usually spend a lot of time macerating in the factories because they don’t want people complaining why 1 bottle from the same batch performs better than the other. As for brands like Dua, they are composed and shipped out with little time to stay at the warehouse. I can tell you this; I have many designer fragrances in my collection and some past the 10 yr mark! Definitely some have either become stronger, changed color only with little to no effect on scent profile or performance and then there are those that have shifted scent profile slightly (usually the top notes dry down faster). Experimentation is what we can do only for designers.
