    Unmentioned Myth: you should smell coffee beans to ‘clear your olfactory palette’ when smelling multiple fragrances. When I went to Fragonard’s museum in Paris, they said just smell yourself- like the inside of your shirt/chest area. They said actual ‘noses’ don’t use coffee beans in the creation process.

    • @sixadamra
      @sixadamra 3 роки тому +20

      The coffee bean myth comes from the idea that you can "wake your nose back up" by sniffing them. The issue is though, alcohol is an anesthetic, so sniffing coffee beans isn't going to do anything once your nose gets knocked out. The best way to counter this is to way a few seconds after spraying until the alcohol has dissipated.

    Watched an interview with a famous perfumer (don’t remember who) and he was asked about “don’t rub your wrists together” advice. He said that this is a myth. First, you can’t “damage molecules” this way. Second, if you could, the physical act of spraying through an atomizer would put far more stress on the molecules than rubbing wrists.
    He also said that they had researched the advantage of pulse points, and found it to be a myth, also. Pulse points are often recommended because the blood is closer to the skin so the skin is warmer at these locations. They studied this and found no measurable difference in temperature between pulse points and other skin locations

    When a fragrance comes out if it gets reformulated they don’t use a new tester so sometimes testers are actually stronger if they were of the old batches , testers are used air gets in the bottle if it is sprayed from time to time alcohol will slowly evaporate leaving a more concentrated fragrance ect so yeah testers are usually better because testers are usually old batches my local store has 2019 eros the testers are 2013

    At Department stores located in the US, testers and samples come from a initial batch or a separate batch during the rollout phase. The point is to get them in the hands of the sales people in advance to encourage sales during the initial rollout or presale. Sometimes there are variantS between batches. Also, as an effort to appease consumers and have a more impactful rollout, venders will make changes to the formulas based on early test groups and feedback. I know of one major launch, where the initial feedback was it was way to strong for the mass market. The next batches were much lighter. The venders or reps will then come by and switch out the old testers with the new or they’ll leave it in the hands of the store to dispose (which almost always is given out to associates). Sometimes, these samples are never picked up, and the sales people continue to give them out to customers.

    Here is the issue with Testers. When you go to a retailer and sample off a tester bottle, if the fragrance you are purchasing has been reformulated, chances are, the retailer will still have a tester with the original batch on the counter. Even the 1ml samples they have behind the counter could be old samples from the original batch. The only way to really know is to do your research before you buy and not rely solely on the tester. In terms of buying a tester, if the fragrance has been around for a while, I rather purchase a tester as their is a chance you could be purchasing an original or older batch.

      This "older batch" thing is the biggest rip off in perfumery. Vintage LNDL, DHI and AHSEE EDTC batches have all been a waste of money for me personally. Unless the scent has really been changed drastically to the point it's not the same scent anymore the only thing you are going to get is a weathered scent devoid of top notes or worse spoiled curry. These aren't fine wines ppl. Even chasing old Creeds is dangerous despite the ingredients being different year to year. Your paying for minute differences a lot of the time. A lot of these Creeds never performed well to begin with and you are being overcharged for 🦄 bottles.

    I spray my fragrances on my inner elbow and back of my neck like you. Another point were I spray it is just on my upper torso. That's usually where I radiate or 'emanate' the most body heat from, so if I want something to really project, that's where I spray it. It can backfire if the fragrance is too deep though because then I really keep getting these deep intense whiffs of it all throughout the day and it can get a bit too much. So if it's a fresher one, that's were I spray it. The more intense ones go on the inner ellbow.

    My favourite place to spray is my clavicle. It's a great place for me, personally. I'll flap my shirt a a little bit to get it to a faster dry down & it gives a nice waft. Also, I often greet my friends with a hug (even in COVID times, we're all vaxxed/boosted/cautious people) so they get a nice warm hug from my scent at the same time. And lastly, I generally wear a scent for me, so on my clavicle, I'm always getting a nice waft from my Bentley Intense/Encre Noire/Moustache gentlemanly beastly bombs.

    I think it's funny that people think rubbing the fragrance will somehow destroy it but never consider that bottle shaking or movement (like during travel or even simple handling), the mixture process itself, or the process of atomizing and spraying isn't somehow doing the same thing. Cracks me up. Study some fluid dynamics, people. Seriously.

      100% agree. No way any mechanical shearing would affect molecules of this size / molecular mass. One of those myths - and easily debunked through a simple experiment: spray both wrists, dab them together for equilibration, rub one wrist hard with your finger and the other one only gently, compare the smell. Or better yet, ask your partner if they smell a difference left to right...

      Yep just a plain white paper sticker slapped almost always sideways or crooked on the packaging. Was very suspious with my purchase as it was a blind buy so i went to a store and looked for the fragrance, store's tester was finished and the lady opened a brand new one infront of me, exact same white paper sticker with TESTER on it.

    Popular frags can often seem weaker because the testers have been pumped, oxygenated and had time to macerate. Fresh batches are made like any other industry yet people don't give them time to macerate. Take your frag home, ten squirts down the sink then put it back in the box and in the back of a dark cupboard for a couple of months. When you come back you'll get the performance you are looking for.

    On me, Pinaud Citrus Musk, although only an EDC, projects and lasts better than my average EDT (and I have dozens). The funny thing about that is, some people say it's weak and doesn't last. I do splash it fairly generously, but I'm also a heavy sprayer, so the comparison holds.

    I recently bought a tester bottle and a new bottle of Cavalli’s Uomo and they’re identical. Totally debunked that myth for me. Perhaps some brands sneak a couple of powerful testers out into the wild in hopes of enticing potential buyers but it seems like a lot of effort for a small increase in buyers.

    Is it true that if our skin is low in moisture will it absorb the parfum oils and cause bad performance? Does putting lotion on first allow the cologne to stick to it so it’ll last longer? I would assume it would have to be unscented lotion lol.

    With regards to spraying fragrance on clothing, I do this all the time - However, there are some fragrances which smell horrible on clothing the next day.. the one i'm specifically thinking about is TF Tuscan leather. Will be okay on the day, but come back the next day and sniff your clothes and it tends to smell of this really animalic sweaty scent. Not sure if it's one of the naturals in there that literally goes off very quickly once exposed to the air, but yeah, really strange. Have tried multiple times with TL and always get the same result by the next day.

    Do you think people buy fragrances like Creed Aventus, then take the juice out to sell, then refill the bottle with a clone and return it? Maybe this is why we have so many batch variations?

  • @MusicLover-01

    Regarding testers, they sometimes smell different or perform differently due to maceration effects and otherwise batch variations or reformulation.

  • @RedRisotto
    @RedRisotto 5 місяців тому

    All fragrances degrade over time... It's inevitable. Alcohol is volatile... and it also affects the oils, which are volatile. Earth has atmospheric pressure = there is nothing you can do to prevent air/oxygen to get into a botte. Will it render the fragrance useless? No. if you still like it... use it. However, the scent won't be as originally intended, and if really old, and/or deep in color - it might stain your clothes. You might get a rash. For "normal" people, it's better to to find your favorite scents and use them. Mega collections are nothing more than a collection of pretty bottles in the end.

    Testers are mistreated in general for sure. Not that they are different as you said, but they aren’t stored properly for sure. I have smelled testers that I already know what the scent smells like and the tester is a watered down smell due to various things like being in light etc etc. I actually smelled a Creed Spice and Wood in a Saks once, that literally had no smell. I swear someone filled it with water. So sad

    I live in the south of Turkey where we can get up to 45 degrees celsius outside in the summer and room temperature can go up to 32-33 degrees due to high humidity. Is that a big problem if the temperature is consistent? We have the heatwave for 2-3 months a year and then normal temperatures. I store em out of light but cant put em in the fridge.
