I'm a collector and expert with a Masters degree in Biochemistry. Light and heat are the enemies of a fragrance. They cause the fragrance to break down at a molecular level essentially making the heart note into the top note. I keep all of mine in a designated refrigerator. If you can't afford that a closet away from any vents or a basement will do fine.
Great tip! I have a couple of designer bottles that ive had for 6 to 7 years and they still smell great. Albeit that I have stored them in a draw and don't often open them. I feel that with correct care, fragrances can last a very long time, as opposed to just 30 months or so. Whats your thoughts on that? Thanks
I have a hand-me-down bottle of Brut that my dad bought back in the 70's or 80's...still smells fantastic. Takes me back to my childhood every time I open it up.
The majority of fragrances will last several years as long as you storing them to avoid heat. Several UA-cam fragrance reviewers have hundreds to a thousand bottles going back as far as 10 years of collecting and they rarely report any going bad. But some do actually go bad or change color. It's definitely an issue to consider if you are purchasing old discontinued fragrances which are no longer available and often sold at heavily inflated prices. The most common sources of heat are your room temperature (e.g. HVAC setting, near fireplace/space heater), exposure to light (i.e. avoid direct sunlight) and humidity (i.e. avoid bathroom). Some people keep bottles stored in their original boxes. Some store them in a closet. Some keep them stored in a display case or bookshelf.

Yes.. very true. I got dior fahrenheit (real not fake) that's gone bad. Can tell from the smell. It now makes you itchy and gives you a rash when worn.
Perfect topic for me right now: I haven't worn my Dior Sauvage EdP that I bought a few years ago for quite some time since I quickly learned how mainstream this scent is as soon as I got more deeply into the world of fragrances. I thought I'd give it a shot again, just out of curiosity because I haven't smelled it in such a long time and I was surprised by what my nose picked up. It smelled nothing like I remember, the top notes where completely gone and the whole scent just smelled like a bit of nothingness. Like I said, the bottle is probably about 4 years old now, 100ml about 2/3 gone and it stood on a shelf close to a window in a room that get's very warm in summer when the AC isn't running, the perfect combination to kill a perfume I guess...
My bottle of Dior Sauvage EdP is 4 yo and still smells exactly the same as a brand new bottle. Performs like a beast. I keep my fragrances stored in a box in a dark and cool place. So yeah the way you keep your fragrances has a huge impact on how they smell.
@@t_rexdiaz6778 yeah, completely my fault lmao, I just didn’t know any better back in the day when I just started getting into fragrances a little more, now I take care and think about how and where I store my bottles.
Have a dedicated shelf in the refrigerator door. Also helps to contain the number of fragrances to a functional and regularly used optimum of 5-15 with occasional throwing away or forwarding to room/textile/car tasks whatever is not in regular use.
I had and have several fragrances from many brands. Designers mostly. The only one that got bad after using it for 1,5 years was sauvage parfum. It was a 60 ml bottle and half of it was used at the time it got bad.

i'm using some perfumes past expiration date and it smells as good as day 1 ...i was told that i should continue using the perfume untill it smells like vinegar then throw it away ...another trick that i was told about is to turn the bottle upside down and spray the air out if i decide to stop using for long time like between seasons.
I have about 12 different bottles that were in storage and are 5-10 years old. I tried my Burberry London and it still smells great. Hope I'm lucky with the other bottles, especially my Green Irish Tweed and Pure Havane. Thanks for the video!
I am happy you talk about this topic. I totally agree Most fragrances expire within 2 to 3 years. Thats Why i always buy 50ml bottles only. I cant remember one fragrance that didnt die after max 36 montags, perhaps davidoff zino did its job longer but thats it. Oxidation starts fast… In retail they exchange the Testers after few months because the more fresh the better… and I believe once oxygene did start you cannot enjoy the fragrance any more,
alcohol based fragrances are very hydrophilic, meaning they will not penetrate your skin nearly as well as something like an oil. As fragrances oxidize, The compounds produced can serve as irritants of the skin by making them more lipophilic and thus better able to penetrate the protective barrier if your skin. Oxidized compounds can also trigger histamine reactions as well, which can cause hives.
I found a long lost bottle of Curve from 2006 and in 2024 it still smells great. I remember years ago I used to keep it in my cars glove compartment …while in Florida! Amazing fragrance? Or amazingly synthetic? 😂
Store in a cool place with low or no light. Don’t open until you will be using regularly. I just use 2 at a time and keep the rest unopened and it lasts. Of course, high-end fragrances will last longer.
I only have one designer fragrance (Prada Luna Rossa Ocean) so far and a few cheap LIDL fragrances inspired by designer fragrances as something casual on the go (they're great value, though, I've gotten compliments) as I just started getting into fragrances, but I already make sure to store them in my wardrobe - it's dark, the temperature is stable as the bedroom and especially the wardrobe doesn't get extremely hot or cold at any time, so I guess that should be decent enough.
I’ve got several bottles of edt and edp that at 7 years old or so and don’t smell any different to me. I have kept them indoors on a shelf that doesn’t get direct light so I’m sure that has helped.
I have seen a bottle of EA Stronger with You Freeze in a store, in which the juice turned GREEN... this is what sunlight does to a freshie in a clear bottle.
I tested a bottle that my grandpa has of Avon Mesmerize for men from the 90s and the top smells like spoiled citrus but the base is full of resins and smells amazing after being aged 🤷🏻♂️
I recently came across a almost full bottle of BVLGARI SOIR, doing research I learned it came out in 2006, and was discontinued, now,, I have sprayed it on myself, and it still smells really good( to me), thing is, can I trust wearing it out?
I have 20+ years old citrusy fragrance and they are still pretty good but they were store perfectly and not many air was in there, I agree that if you have just a small amount left you better finish it than keep them for special occasions only. Not a refrigerator maybe a portable automated wine cellar but they rarely allow the correct temperature of 10 to 12 celsius. Most unopened bottle, perfectly store, should last a least 10 years up to 20 years but the top notes might aged a bit. If it was cheap it might age badly as opposed to more high end aroma chemicals and natural ingredients might macerate to perfection.
Speaking on the oxidation of the fragrance after a good portion is removed from the bottom. What if to remedy this situation? You use decants or a little portable sprayers. You fill them up completely full so there's less oxygen. I wonder if that would make it last onger .
oldie Goldie, the Vantage perfumes from Year 2014 last and smell far better than the perfumes made in 2023 because all new perfumes are watered down and it can barely smell and they last for one hour or so 🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐
It doesnt really expire at all if stored properly. It actually gains quality over time from oxidation and loosing alcohol content. The smell might change, but its not really gonna lose quality. As long as its sealed properly it will only smell better with time.
Some of my fragrances are 15 to 20 years old and are still perfectly fine. I store all my fragrances in their original boxes and in a cool dark place. I’ve only ever had 1 fragrance go bad and that was an Issey miyake fragrance.
I have a bottle of my favorite cologne from years ago, and I noticed it has a funny smell now. I thought it was just me, but this clears things up. Thanks for the info 👍
Hmm... I have a little bottle of Animale I was given by my stepsister back when I was a teenager, and the bottle is dated 1998. It's not like a sealed spray bottle either, it's just got a lid that's a stopper. I haven't really used it much, just kept it for smelling so it's still full, and I always kept it inside a tin box. I guess that's why it still smells great.
The way you store your fragrances is going to have a lot of effect on how long they last. Storing a fragrance in a car or a bathroom is a sure fire way to shorten the shelf life. Too many extreme variations in temperature and humidity are not good. Your own nose is always going to be the best detector of whether your fragrance has expired. If you make it a point to wear a fragrance enough on a consistent basis at the beginning, you’ll know how its supposed to smell, the longevity and projection. When it’s gone bland, you’ll know it.
i have a fragrance called "Berlin" by Playboy, I got it in like 2013-2014 and it's still just as good as new. it's performance actually feels better than what i remember when i used it back in the day.
i had a perfume that lasted me more than 6 years, i used it on rare occasions. nothing changed about it to the last spray. my theory is that i always stored it back in its packaging, in a drawer
I have a bottle of A*Men for 12 years that I keep in a drawer that has changed from blue to yellowish and has crystals floating in it, but it smells pretty much still the same and doesn't irritate me. Should I get rid of it?
Excellent video Brother. I have a bottle of Tommy Hilfiger that my Grandad bought me Christmas 1999. I keep it because he sent it to me early in my AF career; he himself was a WWII Soldier.
Can you talk about the ones that cause illness & panic attacks. I started feeling very strange one time years ago, whenever I would go to town, I thought it was some kind of anxiety coming on but then I heard about some fragrances actually poisoning people, I realised I would always put a little spray on as I left for town, so I stopped using the fragrances & the panic attacks stopped?
I know that they add chemicals to make it last longer! Also even those _top of the line_ fragrances costing over $500 for 15ml _Rip off_ most of them! Sometimes the cheaper brands
i have a 5 year old tom ford ext noir. the notes are still there. but the alcohol is gone. i noticed it when i compared it with the same fragrance in the store.
I just started in the fragrance business, I have oils that have been kept since I started fooling around with perfumery 3 years ago.. I've noticed they last longer when you keep them out of sun light, perfume loves cool dark places for storage..
I have Black XS and Ultra Violet from 2007 and 2008, i only got about 2 cm left in them, but they are still so very strong, much stronger than almost anything else i got in my 74 fragrance collection, only Montales are stronger and Red Tobacco.
I like this video . I have a bottle of pine colonge I use often, but I keep it on the shelf above my bed, which can't be all that good for it ! It is open to the light ! Thanks for the info ! Mike.
Wow- Great video and the timing is perfect . I have begun watching several mens fragrance videos but I feel this one is the most informative of the bunch . Watching a bombardment of daily 10 ten lists can be overwhelming and while collecting everything is just not practical I also see it may be much more practical to purchase 1.7 oz bottles rather than the 3.4 oz size or occasionally available larger size bottles especially if the game plan is to own a dozen or more great scents . There are only so many days in the year and impossible to use all of them . Perhaps this is why CurlyFragrance chooses 12-15 sprays when she goes out in the evening - she wants her moneys worth and realizes no scent lasts forever . This is the only video I have seen since I've begun fragrance channel viewing that has mentioned this topic -thank you .
I don't necessarily agree with this. I bought a bottle of Armani Code in 2012 and still have 3/4 of it left. It smells just as complex as when I opened it.
I just got salvatore ferragamo uomo today and as per batch code its already 5yrs 5months old.. 😂 now im thinking if i should keep it with or without box. great review.
My 100ml bottle of One Million Lucky has lost its top notes. Batch code of 09/2021. Keep all my fragrances in their boxes and in the shade. Totally gutted!
my 30 year old and sealed Egoiste Platinum (yes, it was named like that first) should still be fine. I store my fragrances in a dark and cool cabinet with a humidity absorber. works wonders for every opened fragrance I own!
Is a fragrance significantly less protected if it is not shrink-wrapped? Or does it not make a big difference as long as it is in the packaging and stored in the dark in a cupboard? Unfortunately, some fragrances are not shrink-wrapped and this concerns my favorite fragrance, of which I have backups.

Yes.. very true. I got dior fahrenheit (real not fake) that's gone bad. Can tell from the smell. It now makes you itchy and gives you a rash when worn.
Perfect topic for me right now:
I haven't worn my Dior Sauvage EdP that I bought a few years ago for quite some time since I quickly learned how mainstream this scent is as soon as I got more deeply into the world of fragrances.
Lmao youre right heat or sun kills a fragance, bathroom =humidity, treally bad too, not mentioning you left it there for 4YEARS!!!
@@xRay5454 i moved my perfumes as well, at least it was a good lesson on how to store fragrance I guess lol.
I have a bottle of Obsession from Christmas of 1994, half full and still smells fine.
I have a bottle of Swiss army from the late 90’s. Still smells exactly like it did back in the day and smelling it is like a blast from the past
Have a dedicated shelf in the refrigerator door. Also helps to contain the number of fragrances to a functional and regularly used optimum of 5-15 with occasional throwing away or forwarding to room/textile/car tasks whatever is not in regular use.
I do agree with most of the comments here that as long as your bottles are sealed (no leak), stored on a dry, dark and low to standard temperature (
Bond no. 9 Riverside Drive I purchased in 2004 is still fresh
I had and have several fragrances from many brands. Designers mostly. The only one that got bad after using it for 1,5 years was sauvage parfum. It was a 60 ml bottle and half of it was used at the time it got bad.
Simple..Keep in Box..out of LIGHT & EXTREME HEAT...I GOT FRAGRANCES FROM 2003 Still great
I got my ck one fragrance from 2019, comes with 2 bottles..used up the small bottle and completely forgot about the other bottle...just found it in my closet today and it still smells good 😮
i'm using some perfumes past expiration date and it smells as good as day 1 ...i was told that i should continue using the perfume untill it smells like vinegar then throw it away ...another trick that i was told about is to turn the bottle upside down and spray the air out if i decide to stop using for long time like between seasons.
Ive mightve lost my boxes and theres a extra space in the fridge (drawer) it went well nothing went bad . ❤
Oxidation starts fast…
In retail they exchange the Testers after few months because the more fresh the better… and I believe once oxygene did start you cannot enjoy the fragrance any more,
I have a few fragrances that have gone bad on me ... Polo - Ralph Lauren. Gravity - Coty. Versace - Pour homme they're all approx 10 - 15 years old.
alcohol based fragrances are very hydrophilic, meaning they will not penetrate your skin nearly as well as something like an oil. As fragrances oxidize, The compounds produced can serve as irritants of the skin by making them more lipophilic and thus better able to penetrate the protective barrier if your skin. Oxidized compounds can also trigger histamine reactions as well, which can cause hives.
I have a couple that are 10+ years old, and others that are almost 10 years old, and all still smell great.
I found a long lost bottle of Curve from 2006 and in 2024 it still smells great. I remember years ago I used to keep it in my cars glove compartment …while in Florida! Amazing fragrance? Or amazingly synthetic? 😂
I have a 90’s vintage bottle of “Preferred Stock” that is still awesome.
I have a bottle of kouros from the early 80s that still smells good. That stuff will live longer than all of us.
I have seen a bottle of EA Stronger with You Freeze in a store, in which the juice turned GREEN... this is what sunlight does to a freshie in a clear bottle.
I think another factor is if the bottle is a see-trough or not when not stored in the box
I watched this video on the exact day that about 4 fragrances in my collection hit the limit on their freshness. This is useful information here 👍🏿
My dad has a Le male since 00s and it's way better than newer patches.
I have 20+ years old citrusy fragrance and they are still pretty good but they were store perfectly and not many air was in there,
I agree that if you have just a small amount left you better finish it than keep them for special occasions only.
I have bottles that are older than 20 years, and still smell great. I just store them in dark places with constant low temperatures.
Speaking on the oxidation of the fragrance after a good portion is removed from the bottom. What if to remedy this situation? You use decants or a little portable sprayers. You fill them up completely full so there's less oxygen. I wonder if that would make it last onger .
You can turn the bottle up side down and push on the vaporizator to make like a vide.
I bought a bottle of Hugo by Hugo Boss in 2014. Still smells great.
oldie Goldie, the Vantage perfumes from Year 2014 last and smell far better than the perfumes made in 2023 because all new perfumes are watered down and it can barely smell and they last for one hour or so 🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐🖐
I guess there is a benefit to living in a warmer region- lots of occasion to wear the fragrances with a shorter lifespan, so less goes to waste.
It doesnt really expire at all if stored properly. It actually gains quality over time from oxidation and loosing alcohol content. The smell might change, but its not really gonna lose quality. As long as its sealed properly it will only smell better with time.
I’ve watched a video on Roja Dove’s UA-cam channel the other day,he recommended to enjoy your fragrance, use it within the first 6 months to a year
He would say that, he sells the stuff!
This concerns me - I keep all mine in their boxes and shelved because of this
Some of mine have lasted for 17 years .. I have many which are kept in the fridge ..
Some of my fragrances are 15 to 20 years old and are still perfectly fine. I store all my fragrances in their original boxes and in a cool dark place. I’ve only ever had 1 fragrance go bad and that was an Issey miyake fragrance.
I have my CerrutiSi and it smells great after 12 years
So Antonio what do you do with all of the fragrances you own ? Surely you don’t throw them away after 3 years ?
I store mine in a very cool area that has no sunlight or humidity. Fragrances last for many years if stored correctly.
Here’s an interesting experiment, get a bunch of old fragrances from some estate sales and compare them to a new bottle
i have a fragrance called "Berlin" by Playboy, I got it in like 2013-2014 and it's still just as good as new. it's performance actually feels better than what i remember when i used it back in the day.
i had a perfume that lasted me more than 6 years, i used it on rare occasions.
nothing changed about it to the last spray.
my theory is that i always stored it back in its packaging, in a drawer
I think if stored right and is not very fresh (citrusy) can easily last up to 10 years without any changes
i've got a batch from 2017 of Versace Eros edt, that I purchased in 2020 and IT was great until I've finished the bottle in 2022
What about fragrances that don’t have a cap is it easier for oxygen to get in
I have a bottle of A*Men for 12 years that I keep in a drawer that has changed from blue to yellowish and has crystals floating in it, but it smells pretty much still the same and doesn't irritate me. Should I get rid of it?
I stored my Dior Sauvage in my refrigerator for 6 months. Now it smells like bacon & eggs. I've never received more compliments.
@@dualityofman1253 😂 😂
I have Armani black code just checked on that site 2004 19 years ago 😂😂😂😂. Hardly used but still smells ok.
Excellent video Brother. I have a bottle of Tommy Hilfiger that my Grandad bought me Christmas 1999. I keep it because he sent it to me early in my AF career; he himself was a WWII Soldier.
Can you talk about the ones that cause illness & panic attacks.
I started feeling very strange one time years ago, whenever I would go to town, I thought it was some kind of anxiety coming on but then I heard about some fragrances actually poisoning people, I realised I would always put a little spray on as I left for town, so I stopped using the fragrances & the panic attacks stopped?
this is a histamin reaction (mcas)
I have perfume closet like those wine cellar...it works perfect i have my collection bought many years ago and still smells great ☺️
My old batch of Eros smells pretty bad... its almost done but i wanted to use it this spring... gonna buy the edp soon
I have a bottle of pine colonge I use
often, but I keep it on the shelf above
my bed, which can't be all that good for it !
It is open to the
light !
Thanks for the info !
Mike.
I have 4yr old Club de Nuit intense man edt and first formulation of Zino by Davidoff both are great and last long.
My bottle of Naxos said it’s a shelf life of 36 months on the bottle.
All my fragraces are stored in their boxes in my room, at 21©. For ex. i have F Black Ferragamo 2017 which it still great in terms of smell, projection, etc.
So do you feel aventus gets better with age or no?
Is a fragrance significantly less protected if it is not shrink-wrapped? Or does it not make a big difference as long as it is in the packaging and stored in the dark in a cupboard? Unfortunately, some fragrances are not shrink-wrapped and this concerns my favorite fragrance, of which I have backups.
