232: GR Toys/ Haolonggood Nasutoceratops (2023) Review

  • GR Toys burst on the dinosaur collectible scene with its well-received Spinosaurus with the revised Ibrahim tail. It then followed with a seemingly impossible offering - an insanely painted Carcharodontosaurus that lived up the promise of its release images.
    However the last offerings had fans worried that it was headed off in a different direction, with the Therizinosaurus and T Rex seemingly far removed from GR Toys’ original high standards. So when Nasutoceratops was offered for sale without much ado, it got fans curious. How will it far? Will these ceratopsians live up to the promise of its initial offerings, or be the final nail in the coffin of this line of dinosaur models?
    Let’s see!

    The orange version looks fantastic. The paint is very impressive for the price. Those Safari models are old, their newest releases aren't that cheap anymore. The Utahraptor and Majungasaurus are the same price as GR Toys' Nasutoceratops but the paintjob is much less sophisticated. This Nasutoceratops is a very fine model for the price, in my opinion.

      Definitely the one I would get if I had to choose one. It's really sad with the Safari models because their sculpts are really good. Their paint application is what lets them down, and makes it hard to justify some of the higher prices, which isn't the budget brackets they previously were, as you pointed out.
      I think if you could pick one up for USD$19-22, it's quite a good deal!

      These certainly are going to bridge the gap between Safari/ CollectA and PNSO in a huge way for many collectors. I still see obvious disparities in quality, but taken in totality, I don't think it makes a huge difference collectors will have in terms of enjoyment and admiration. The work is really very, very good! I look forward to seeing what else they'll have for us!

    I got both of them today! I really like them. As soon as I see them out front the box, they look so much better than any video reviews. I am sorry that I do not mean that your video were not good, it’s just that they are so much better in person. The scales are still too big, not like PNSO, they still look very good. They only thing is that they do not look good to blend in with PNSO. I feel HLG are stronger, maybe I will just play with them as like I am still a little kid. lol

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  8 місяців тому +1

      No problem at all! A lot of times, it really depends on the lighting and colour temperature we use. And a video camera usually cannot capture the full dynamic range that the eye can see.
      I am very happy that as an adult, you have discovered something that still brings out the inner child. That to me, is the magic of dinosaurs.

    • @RichardLee888
      @RichardLee888 8 місяців тому

      And you are right. All PNSOs has soft legs, it will fall over time. I am still testing on HLG, the allosaurus is very hard to stand, only a very tiny angle would work. I found though, it won’t fall once it stands, so far. How about Rebor Kiss? It seemed using stronger legs like HLG as well.

    Really like them both, but I'm partial to the blue version since it reminds me of one of my favorite models of old: the 1997 Wild Safari Styracosaurus. Here in Brazil we didn't (and still don't) get many models avaliable to buy on stores. However there was this amazing bookstore in a mall near my house that got plenty of animal models, both prehistoric and modern. I remember that the Styracosaurus was a gift from my parents (since I was 7 at the time) and it gave me many hours of playtime! I think I may still have it...

I still need to get the Carcharadontosaurus. Sad the Tyrannosauruses were what they were. With lips, arms in naturalistic position and head more looking down I would have bought the red version.

      You're most welcome! Given the choice, I would have gone for the brown as well. There is just something in the paint applications that brings us back to the GR Toys of old, and it's such a great start to going back to what they once were. If they continue on this path, I feel collectors would give them a chance should they ever decide to redo T Rex. I frankly have no idea what was going on there.

    A question: would you like the PNSO to make more abelisaurids? Such as Pycnonemosaurus (my favorite dinosaur), Spectrovenator and Thanos simonattoi.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      Abelisaurids definitely yes, but those with decent fossil remains. Thanos _simonattoi_ in particular is so deplorable as to beggar belief it was named at all. I hope PNSO does a remake of Carnotaurus with its newer skin rendition, since its my favourite dinosaur. Majungasaurus. would also be a good candidate given its remains, as is Aucasaurus, possibly the most complete abelisaurid we know of.

    As soon as I learned of it’s release I immediately purchased the subdued variant, and upon your review I am pleased with my choice. Like you, the inconsistencies with the sculpt is noticeable yet, neither egregious nor repellent. Normally, I give leeway towards artistic expression when fossilized evidence is scant. I will say the figure is a basal Centrosaurine and thus its body morphology most likely was not quite so robust. If I were consulted I might have suggested PNSO’s exemplary Centrosaurus be used as a template. My sole disappointment is how repeatedly Haolonggood comes just short in producing true sexual dimorphic variations, i.e. alternate positioning of the limbs, head, and jaw would be an industry first, and could compel more collectors to purchase both. I also am gratified for a lesser known Ceratopsian amongst a plethora of the usually represented four genus’s. I’m hoping for a figure representing the Hadrosauridae for 2023. As always, many, many thanks indeed for reviewing.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      "Neither egregious or repellent." Love that phrasing! I wish I'd though of it myself 😁! Well, given a choice of only one, I think the subdued variant would be the one to get, since it would seem to approach the kind of aesthetic HLG used to be known for in the past. I hope this is really the start of a journey back to its previous quality.
      Seems like we have taken opposite tracks when it comes to scant fossils 😁You tend towards greater leeway for interpretation while I tend towards more confinement! Still, overall given how this turned out, I'm a lot happier with it than I am dissatisfied, and very happy to have these!

    Nice, I was waiting for this! I was quite excited when I saw the images online, thinking that I might actually consider getting these as my first ever ceratopsians, especially since they're cheaper. I really like the paint jobs on these guys, especially the brown one. The blue one would add some variation on the shelf, and its crest colours are reminiscent of PNSO's Tsintaosaurus!
    Unfortunately the 1:35 scaling doesn't seem to be as accurate as reported, and the anatomical inaccuracies seem quite avoidable...
    I don't think I'll be getting these after all, but, they would still look great on any shelf, and bode well for the company despite their previous T.rex. attempt.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      Good day! I think that for the limitations of the figures, namely the need to maximizw articulation, they have done a great job to still preserve as much accuracy as possible. However articulation does carry with it various compromises in terms of anatomical shape, joint lines, and colour discontinuities with different poses that also plagued the McFarlane series line of dragons. I also find the colours, especially the ceratopsian line, too flamboyant and gaudy for my liking.
      For what they are, they are an admirable feat of engineering while still respecting as much accuracy as possible. In addition, I admire them for creating yet another way for these magnificent animals to be admired and enjoyed, and really the more different types of model on the subject, the better. I passed on the tyrannosaurid line, but have the Spiclypeus as a representative of a significant line of dinosaur models. I may be getting a raptor soon too!

The only thing is that you have to pay for the STL files, then to have it printed, and then have it painted. So overall it works out to a lot, and probably worth only for dinosaurs you really, really like. But the ability to print according to your preferred scale according to your accepted real size estimate cannot be matched.
