238: Haolonggood Tianzhenosaurus (Orange and Green variants) Review

  • As if their last two offerings - Nasutoceratops and Ouranosaurus - were not enough, Haolonggu returns with a hat trick in rapid fashion, giving us the Chinese ankylosaurid Tianzhenosaurus.
    A rarely mentioned genus, this dinosaur was a little one that has tantalizingly complete remains, and yet never properly figured in the original paper. But Haolonggu have nonetheless brought their skill in sculpt and paint to this animal, and the result is a pair of truly pleasing specimens that look as good as their last two.
    If this is the course for Haolonggu, and if they keep this rapid release up, we're doomed - or at least, our wallets are!

    As always, Haolonggood surprised us with another amazing model. And with a species that no one has ever guessed or heard of. I love the green version more because the yellow version is quite similar to the PNSO Ankylosaurus. The figure is so perfect, but that head sculpt is the only thing that I don't like. Other than that, this is a fine addition to any collector's collection. This company is the best thing that happened in 2023 to our collectors, I think. Because in this short period, they gave us some spectacular and underrepresented genera. And thank you for being the first to show us what this figure looks like in real life. You are the best, my dear sir. Please keep up the fantastic work. 🖤

      Thank you! Actually I'm reading a disseration on Tianzhenosaurus at this moment, but so far nothing really glaring enough to do another video on. I would say that aside, HLG has certainly surprised collectors this year, and at such a low price that it's certainly a winner compared to the sad paint apps of CollectA and Safari. I'm not so much concerned for PNSO as I am these two companies. Safari especially, since I basically grew up on their products!

    knowing tianzhenosaurus has a possibility of being a synonym of saichania and better in scale that way, that makes this figure more appealing to me

      I guess if you allow for leeway, then you certainly could do that and not insist on fine detail 😁 I can see why they didn't keep to 1:35 though... it _is_ small enough as it is already!

    Another informative and entertaining review. I'm always amazed when a company, such as PNSO in 2021, is able to "churn out" high quality figures rapidly, and so Haolonggood is no exception. I sympathize with your frustration over the shortcomings, especially pictorially, of the paper. My concern is that any future criticisms of the figure will ensue from the sculptor perhaps making an inaccurate interpretation based on the vagueness of the document. Seems unfair, but then maybe Haolonggood went out on a limb in sculpting this figure - perhaps a bit preliminary, but a bold move nonetheless. Reminiscent of CollectA.

      After I posted the video, a viewer told me of a dissertation on it. I've procured the paper and am reading it. Unfortunately it's in Chinese so I can't post it, but the long and short of it so far is that the club looks passably similar although one of the clubs in the paper has been damaged. There is some difference in the cervical half rings. I don't knw if HLG used this paper at all, but certainly this Tianzhenosaurus seems generic enough to pass a cursory glance. I'll know more when I get to the end of the paper, but it's slow going and there are many distractions 😁

    An Ankylosaurid I'm surprised we don't see more of is Talarurus, it's known from very good remains (Skulls in particular) from many individuals. From what I remember, it's second only to Pinacosaurus as the Asian Anklyosaurid with the best known remains

      Actually there is a dissertation done on it. Unfortunately it's in Chinese so I don't see any point in sharing it. I'm still reading it but from what I have read so far, it doesn't really help in the analysis of this model much. The tail club looks pretty generic, and another one had parts broken off.

    Theyre super adorable! I ordered the green version. Now I wish we could get an another Sauropod. Perhaps Camarasaurus, Neosodon or Mierasaurus. My 3 fav Sauropods. Haha

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      Interesting choices! The Wild Safari Camarasaurus for now is still my favourite, but it would be interesting to see if PNSO sticks to the 1:35 for this smaller sauropod. Did you mistake Neosodon for something else? That one is known from only a few isolated teeth.
      As for the Tianzhensaurus, the more I look at them the more I like the green. Really just looking like pieces of jade!

      @@DinosDragons Yeah true. Well Camarasaurus nonetheless would be great. Also Id like more sauropods in general but the problem I have is theyre usually very boring colored. Like I like natural color schemes but some flashyness would be nice, like especially on the neck head areas why I wish one from HAOLONGGOOD.

Actually after I releaesd the video, I was told by a viewer that there _is_ a disseration paper on this dinosaur that has a lot more detail, but it's in Chinese so I didn't see the point of sharing it. Morphologically, nothing that would make very much impact on this, except maybe the shape of the osteoderms on the cervical half ring and a little change to the tail club.
      I think you will enjoy these little guys. The green one is really growing on me. It looks comprised of many pieces of beautiful jade! 😁

  • @ArawnsFire

    Surprised, yet pleased for another ankylosaurid . Oddly, I’ve found the figure does bear an uncanny resemblance to Zaraapelta nomadis. The squamosal horns and the head was sculpted with its sharply angled and tapered rostrum does appear as if it were sculpted around the missing pieces.
    Given how academia is subjected to oversight by bureaucrats I can understand them being taciturn. In any case, Haolonggood released a beautiful and incomplete Zaraapelta. The colours on the green are vibrant and warrant a purchase to be sure.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      You're right! It does have the same compressed pre-orbital area and even the downcurve of the snout. But its quadratojugal horns are tiny though in comparison to Zaraapelta's.
      If you could only get one, I strongly recommend the green. Really reminds me of jade! 😁

      I think they still lack in finesse of sculpt and paint, unless they recapture the magic of the Carcharodontosaurus. But they definitely are moving up, and paint application wise they certainly blow Safari and CollectA out of the water. Which is a pity given that so many of Safari's sculpts by Doug Watson are really outstanding for their accuracy. And at their price points, they are going to be a no-brainer favourite soon. I hope Safari and CollectA can leve up.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому

      It really depends on what they release, when, and how much. I would say that at their current price, HLG is fast becoming the best option for most Western collectors, given the quality of their sculpt and paint applications. I sure hope for PNSO to get going on other clades, including the ankylosaurs!

    • @Bota7120

      @@DinosDragons for me personally, HLG still isnt quite there yet. Their models lack the fineness PNSO models have, and sometimes the paint application leaves a bit to be desired. I do think they are a great budget friendly alternative to PNSO, but me personally am not fully convinced yet. Maybe they can make a 1:35 sauropod that will blow me away haha

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому

      @@Bota7120 The problem is that if they were to go to the degree of fineness that PNSO does, they will likely not keep their low prices. So comparing the two isn't an apples to apples comparison. If you can afford it, then of course go for PNSO. If you can't, then HLG is for many people a better choice than Safari or Collecta _if_ they can get their accuracy to the known material up. In that area, except for compromises made for clown feet, Doug Watson is a very man to fault in terms of rigorous research.

    This one seems a little bit expensive for a such small figure and the head is quite ugly ...pnso ankylosaurus is way bigger and better at the same price or a few more ...safari ltd is cheaper, bigger and really good (don't like the colour but sculpt is great). I don't know which area you're from, but what I understand about Western prices is there is no way the PNSO Ankylo is cheaper than this. I would say PNSO Ankylo is close to 1:35, their sculpting level is also better and they pay more attention to accuracy. But as for the colour, unless they have improved their colours from the white dusty look I got when I bought my late run version, this colour is still better.
