  • A while ago I decided to celebrate some of my non-PNSO dinosaur models. I started with my top ten favourite Safari Ltd figures, and now I turn my attention to the other major player, CollectA.
CollectA is well-known for its rendition of little known dinosaurs, or being very fast with those newly announced or published. I don’t have nearly as many CollectAs as I do Safari Ltds, but I’m excited to show you some of the ones I’ve loved for years. Not all strictly adhere to scientific accuracy, but they are all special in some way.
As with the Safari Ltds, I’ve had to split it into two parts. This is Part 1, with Part 2 coming soon!

That Argentinosaurus looks amazing!! I had to pick up the figure after the review. I will pair him with the hunting Mapusaurus. I also may pick up more that were on the list, I didn't realize how many amazing figures collecta has. Thanks for sharing your favorites, love your list!!

Thank you, it was a pleasure to do this video and look through what I have and CollectA has a lot! What a great idea for Mapusaurus! I think I'll get their small, green mouth open one. Scales are off, but nice to have them together! 😁

I'm absolutely delighted to hear that! It's indeed a tiny figure that is of a very high quality, and sadly it's not as glamorous as the other theropods. Yet even at its small size, CollectA bothered to sculpt it with such detail, and that is a credit to the company!

CollectA is without a doubt one of the best dinosaur figure companies out there. And throughout these years they've gained the love they deserve. I'm sure you have figures from various companies, so I would love to see you do this video series again my dear sir ❤ eagerly waitingfor the part two.

Thanks mate! Been behind on my responses, but by now I think you've seen the 2nd part to this. These are worthy companies that make both accurate, detailed, and affordable dinosaurs for children, and I definitely am very grateful to them as well as Safari Ltd for what they've delivered over the years!

@Dylan Geltzieler You certainly seem to know your tyrannosaurs and have named off more than I could probably have thought off the top of my head! With so many to choose from, some of them backed with quite credible fossils, I really would like to see some of the more obscure ones on your list. Lythronax and Teratophoneus I've been particularly interested in.

I am constantly disappointed that we never get a CONSISTENT scale from large to small from a company like PNSO or Nanmu - because it would be such an amazing thing to be able to build a to-scale diorama featuring some of the smallest and largest denizens of that ecosystem. I know that's difficult - because it necessitates a large enough scale to be able to sculpt *any* detail on the smaller taxa - something human-scale or smaller - and in doing so you also have to simultaneously bump up the size of the largest members too - the sauropods. And when you're talking about an animal the size of Argentinosaurus or some of the longest estimates for Barosaurus, you are talking about absolutely MONSTROUSLY huge animals, which means even if you are at a 1:25 scale, you re talking about models well over a meter long, perhaps over 2 meters for the longest dinosaur reconstructions - needless to say most people don't have that kind of space in their house to dedicate to such massive models, which forces the maker to either go with smaller scale models - 1:40 or smaller - or use different scale systems for different groups of animals, which is always disappointing.
But just once I WISH we'd get a completely standard 1:25 to 1:35 scale for an entire collection, from the very small theropods to the massive sauropods. At this scale, yes, the sauropod models would be insanely big but that's FINE as far as I'm concerned - there'd be a market for them, I think - they just wouldn't suit everyone and so the maker could also offer the sauropods in a 1:50 to 1:80 scale or something to keep the size down for people without as much space. Even at 1:80 scale, the largest estimates for Barosaurus would still have the length at about 0.6 meters or over a foot and a half long, which is plenty large for small-scale collectors.
But SUPPOSING we had a standard of 1:30 scale, I think it could JUST barely work:
Barosaurus lentus (largest estimated length) would be 5 ft or 1.52 meters long. Huge but *just* barely in the realm of manageable for people with the space for it.
Allosaurus would be just over 1 ft / 0.3 meters long - slightly larger than the current PNSO offering.
Coelurus would be tiny - about 3.2 inches long or a handful of centimeters - JUST barely doable but would lose some detail due to the tiny size at 1:30 scale.
So yeah I think 1:30 scale COULD work to recreate, say, the Morrison formation fauna at the same scale - the tiniest dinosaurs WOULD be extremely small models here but it's JUST doable - just on the edge of viability while having SOME amount of detail possible. If you get any smaller than that, you lose the smallest members of the faunal assemblage and that hurts the ability to really showcase the sheer SIZE of the biggest sauropods.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому

Totally get you. For the longest time I loved my Carnegie Collection for keeping to the 1:40 scale, and it was such a special thing to have everything laid out and know that they were of the same scale (so I thought as a kid; I later realised many of them weren’t exactly 1:40).
The only solution I would find idea would be to have different scales for different size ranges of animals. I was really unhappy that PNSO went to 1:45 for large marine animals and Mamenchisaurus. Now I hope they will stick to it, while the rest can be 1:35. For better detail on some of the smaller ones though, like the dromeosaurids, I would accept a larger scale, maybe 1:20.
As for Argentinosaurus my favourite sauropod of all time, I once asked a sculptor how big and how much it would cost to do a 1:40. Assuming the estimated 40m length, 1:40 means the model would be 1m (3.25ft)! I was quoted about USD$3000 for that… and that’s not even factoring in the shipping fee and taxes. 1:40 at least scales with my Carnegie models, although if I were to go for the more commonplace 1:35 now, it would work out to 1.15m (3.75ft).
I keep thinking the only way we could have good large sauropods would be if PNSO were to do hollow vinyl figures again, like their Huanghetitan. Yet I doubt prices would be as cheap, given that the price of everything has increased.
The only other solution I can think of would be to get a mix of different models from different toy companies. The problem is all that research to match scales, plus the different aesthetics in sculpt and paint that might be quite jarring. If I were rich, I could also get someone to mod existing smaller dinosaurs at the right scale to look like the species I want.
I only hope that CollectA can give us another large size sauropod, but even that would likely be smaller than the 1:35 most of us want!
