Try and remember, this is basically a phone SOC in a laptop case, with better cooling. All of these can run fine on top-end phones so honestly, this is about as good as I expected. The reason the X86 stuff works so well is there is actually special hardware to perform the slowest X86 tasks to emulate in hardware, like the X86 memory map. M1 only partially emulates X86, the hardest to perform and slowest of the X86 functions to emulate on ARM CPUs are actually fully implemented in hardware. You can think of this as more of a hybrid approach. it's nice and all, don't get me wrong, but further segregating the market isn't going to bode well for MAC users who also want to do things like game. MAC support is already abysmal and now that they would have to support a whole different CPU architecture, it will be worse still. Emulation is mostly open source these days so that will be the best supported because it will be the community that makes those things work well. It's a tough call here, apple is about the only company out there that could pull this off because they are already very used to little walled gardens and just ignoring the rest of the whole of computing in favor of their own ecosystem and they have the customers who are willing to accept those limitations for the status/clout they perceive owning a massively overpriced apple product gives. I can't say if I think PCs can or would go arm or anything but I wouldn't be upset with a move to something like RiscV +. Open source and freely available to all. I guess time will tell but apple is so separated from normal computing, in general, I don't think this M1/ARM move will really make much of a difference anytime soon to the whole of computing in general.
But that's just my two cents.

I don't think people really understand just how strong this chip is.
First of all it has this nice architecture thanks to it being an SoC, so it has unified memory with CPU/GPU and a LOT of cache which hides the latency to main memory.
But the actual star of the show are the high performance cores which at 3.2Ghz get similar ST scores to a Zen 3 5950x which runs at 5Ghz. You do the math.
I am not even beginning the discussion of power efficiency.
It is a great chip and while I am not an apple fan and their products, technically M1 is a masterpiece.

I love how Gamecube emulation is essentially becoming commonplace like N64 emulation, pretty much all modern laptops can do it. The raspberry pi 5 will be incredibly exciting for stuff like this.
Personally I will be a thinkpad user for the foreseeable future due to ports, upgradability, and pricing, but what Apple is doing is exciting for the laptop industry nonetheless.
I hope one day Apple will put hdmi/usb A on at least their "Pro" line, and don't make it super expensive to get 16gb of RAM, and perhaps have some kind of at least storage upgradability.

It would be interesting to see Parallels Windows 10 PC gaming on an M2X or even M3X machines, especially when PCs overall have probably moved to arm based processors by then - that means devs would have to make their games optimized for Arm.
By then, kind of wonder, besides extra optimization, wouldn't it be better overall just to focus resources in making PC games for Windows instead of also have it natively run on Macs?

No point in UTM able to listing x86/x64 architecture in the GUI it is wasn't possible.... Now i'm thinking that is probably why they only list Windows 7 and XP on their website..

FYI: Raspberry Pi4 bootloader Eeprom UPDATE ** USB Boot from USB-C **
    2020-11-24 BCM2711 xHC boot support - BETA
Add support for booting from the BCM2711 XHCI controller which is the USB-C socket on Pi 4B / Pi 400 and the type A sockets on Compute Module 4 IO board. The controller only supports USB 2.0 and the primary usage is for USB-MSD support on CM 4 boards without requiring a PCIe XHCI controller.
To use this add '5' to the BOOT_ORDER in the EEPROM config for BCM_USB_MSD boot.

As a mac user, I'd be careful with your choice coming from this video. The concept going ahead with running these chips is the eco system being more locked down so it may end up getting harder to get such applications onto the OS further down the line.

    • @aztracker1
      @aztracker1 3 роки тому

@@iWadey that was one of my concerns was that they'd go store apps only. I'm slightly less, though still, concerned about boot OS alternatives. My main needs are Docker and VS Code. Though docker on arm is less mature.

PPSSPP does work on m1. You just need to go through the homebrew install steps in terminal with a command switxh that forces them to use x64 versions instead of arm (since terminal itself is now an arm app)

I've tried running UTM, but back then i didn't have ARM version of Windows.. Knowing x86 architecture existed as an option in the pick-list, I choose THAT thinking it would work, but it crashed on boot
Now i release, just like Parallels which runs on Intel as well, the exception is what the "chip" can support. eg, Parallels only runs Windows 10 on M! because of the version being used..
Which i knew that back then... but that's one reason why i returned my M1.. The other being, MS is not gonna do ARM version of ESXi and server systems.
