  • I have struggled to get the planting right in my large herbaceous borders. I have periods where it looks great in spring and autumn but in mid summer it looks sad and uninspiring. I know from your comments that many of you are struggling with similar issues and I am not alone. For this reason, I decided we needed some expert advice and so I contacted Rosy Hardy. Rosy is an RHS Vice President and winner of 24 Chelsea gold medals and the owner/ proprietor of Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants in the UK and is just the person to help.
This video runs through the problems I have, the conditions of the site, including aspect, soil type etc and what I like and want from the area. Head over to Rosy’s channel on 12th March (link below) to hear her response in which she gives me the advice I need to improve these borders. Follow future videos as we implement these changes.
Many thanks to Rosy for her help.

Looking forward to hearing what the expert thinks! As soon as I saw the area, my first thought was it would be a great formal area. If it were mine, and I wish it was, I would either do a Proven Winners Incrediball Hedge down each side, or do something like Laura from Garden Answer did down a walkway beside of her house. She did pedestals with urns for annuals, with roses between, and perennials, such as nepeta and veronicas, in drifts down the front. If only I could figure out my own garden space!!! 🙄

Thank you for your comments funnily enough,I’m in the process of removing plants under the hornbeam walk to replace with Hydrangea arborescens Incrediball. They do look lovely when planted on mass, I think they will do well in dappled shade. Trouble is, just so much to do!!

    When you're mulching.....
Invest in a potato fork. 10 tyne jobby. Had a multitude of uses buy for scattered mulch on the flower beds it invaluable. Scoop the much from your barrow hold the handle top with your right hand and the mulch will scatter just where you want.
Its also ideal for scooping cutting up. And fantastic for turning your mulch over. Scoop your mulch up and then shaking the mulch through the fork.

For the type of soil you have there are plants with a very long blooming period, like geranium Rozanne, aconitum, verbena, agapanthus, penstemon, kniphofia, iris, geum, evergreen salvia, crocosmia, calendula. Tulips would be great too:) Purple and orange looks so nice together! It's easier to plant when you know your colour scheme! Orange is a colour of prairie, and pink i believe is a very romantic colour, doesn't suit here.

Looking forward to Rosie’s response. I put a new long perennial border in Spring 2023 and I am so not satisfied so far with it. I am looking at it now through drizzle and sleet and itching to get out there in it and move stuff around. Till then, it is off to the raspberries to prune them back. I thoroughly enjoy your garden.

But here is the full list Rosy shared of great plants to chose from, I think you will agree, it’s great information! Good luck and join me in autumn as I’m determined to sort mine out!

    Hi ,
I have been watching your videos about yew tree and yew hedge .
Recently i bought about 11 yew hedge for our front garden .
I tried to learn more about them to be able to take care of them .
I’ve learned a lot about them by watching your videos .
I would like some advise if you find a moment and respond to my comment .
First , i cover their soil with a decent amount of mulch .
I have been advised to water them every 4 days and in hot weather every 3 days , i know it can be vary depending on weather but mostly i should make sure the water is drained and not to over water .
Its been about a week i planted them , i want to know is there any way or product that i should use to prevent any pests ?
    Should i do that?
I have a very bad experience with pests last summer and my hedge died .
I am really into gardening and try to learn more before use anything on my plants .
So would you recommend anything to me ?
Also one more thing , i know the first year for yew is so important and for the roots to settle in .
In rainy time ( fall and winter ) considering they have been planted recently how often should i water them ?
Sorry for the long message .
I really hope to receive an answer from you.
    Many thanks .

Yew is quite easy to grow, they don’t like to sit in wet soil so I think watering too much isn’t necessary and may do more harm than good! I water them in well at the time of planting, mulch will lock in the moisture. If it’s wet then you don’t need to water but if it becomes very hot and dry then water well every two weeks for the first year. It’s far better to water deeply less often as if you water little and often the roots come up to the surface and you want them to go down to find moisture. After the first summer they are on their own, I never water mine now they are established.
Good luck, they are tough plants and actually less water is better than too much!!

@@MurphysGarden do you have any suggestion to prevent them from bugs and pests before it happens ? Or if it did whats the best way to correct it ?

    • @MurphysGarden

I have not had any problems with pests and diseases with my yew hedge and never spray them. Sometimes in spring there are some flies in them but this is around the time when the birds are feeding their babies so the problem usually sorts itself out without any intervention from me! The main way to make it resilient to problems is to make sure it is healthy. You could feed it with a seaweed feed in spring for a little boost and then just keep it watered in periods of drought, other than that just leave it to do its thing! It is quite slow in the first couple of years and then it will grow quickly after that.

I've been very inspired by the UA-cam channel Season Designs with Dawn. She created an absolutely stunning border with just a handful of varieties. It helped me realize how much more impact you get from larger swaths of fewer types of plants. This is one of the videos I enjoy most ua-cam.com/video/4-j10e3Fkdw/v-deo.htmlsi=CE4F2p09ZXWhxIk9 As soon as I'm finished watching this, I'm heading over to see what Rosie suggests. She is a wealth of knowledge. Having said all that, I think the summer shots of your borders were beautiful!!

      @MurphysGarden  5 місяців тому

Thank you Rachel, I will have a look at that, I haven’t heard of Dawn’s channel. I’m realising that too, repetition seems to be key! I don’t want to rush into anything and need to plan it all properly.
