Finally just got my SP delivered and rode it for the first time. I must have watched this video 15 times in the 7 months I waited! Even with as much as I hyped it up in my head, it still blew away my expectations! It is so damn good. I like how considerate he is for others, for example at 12:10 pulling power from the wheel to slow and be ready for a brake pull and by doing that lowering the noise as rolling by that dog. Awesome review by a cool mature thinking dude :) Instead of getting pissed off, throwing middle fingers at everyone when someone "cuts you off" while doing 80mph on a 30mph limit city street. Don't get me wrong, I like some big pulls on my 21 MT-09 but there's a place and time even if you're not on a track. Very thorough and detailed review. Thanks for your time.

I've only done 500 miles on my SP so I'm still getting to know it but it's hard to disagree with anything you said about it.... I think you got it spot on. Only other negative I can think of is the fuel gauge shows full until nearly 90 miles and then thirty miles later it's on reserve ☺ but like you say it's such a good bike I can live with that, cheers fella 👍
Thanks so much for the positive feedback! I do agree about the fuel gauge, although I'm just pleased it has one😂 but you are right, the first bar is a whole half of a tank and then it seems to drop rather fast. I am big fan of the fuel trip though... I don't know why all bikes don't count the miles the light has been on, seems obvious, and it takes the stress out of the fuel light being on.
Spot on for everything you said. I laughed when you mentioned stiff suspension out of the box or brand spanking new. On my first day I drove 400km from a dealership floor and I thought damn this suspension needs to go all the way to the soft side. But as I continued to riding on stock settings not changing anything, suspension was better and better day after day of riding this thing. Love this bike
Absolutely brilliant reviews of the MT buddy….had myself and MT10 back in 2017 …..was a bit of a beast😃 Had various bikes since then but next spring Im getting myself one of these for sure ….stunning bit of kit👌🏻
Cheers. I am big fan of the MT10, I'm tempted to buy one for the sound alone😀 what a beast. I'm sure that you would like the new MT09, I have ridden all sorts of bikes over the years but I'm currently a big fan of the middle weight nakeds on the road. The MT09's 120ish hp feels more like 150hp, probably because of the weight, wheelbase & gearing.

Being honest I found the MT10 too fast for the road and found myself in 3 figure silly speeds at all times and bought it to try and slow down from a Gsxr1000🤣 Currently riding a heavily customised Z900rs,Gen 2 Busa and a Tenere700…. Thinking of changing the T7 for the MT09sp even though that’s a great bike and also selling the Busa for the new Gsxs1000 gt to do a bit of touring on with speed🤣🤣

Brillant review - I got the weight down to 185 kg wet as well as the upgrade to the braided brake lines with uprated brake pads, works very well all day at the race track😉🏁🏁
Thanks! Yours sounds like a weapon, I changed out the whole braking system for Brembo on mine (master cylinder, calipers, ss lines the lot) but it wasn't necessary to be honest, stock setup worked well with just some decent pads👍

Really great way to show the handling at 8:30. That power wheelie on a narrow lumpy road is a tough test of suspension. You have to have confidence in the suspension to pull off that move (unless you're as boneheaded as I used to be).
I have the base model because it’s near impossible to find an SP anywhere around here. I love it. Would love if it also had cruise control. Other than that I have no complaints. Trying to get used to the feeling of the front wheel being up in the air. I rode cruisers for the past 7 years. The front wheel only came up on me once on a cruiser because I had a passenger onboard. Other than that I only did wheelies on bicycles as a kid and I wasn’t very good at them lol.
The base model is a great bike, more than enough for the street and probably better colours. She sure does like to lift that front wheel, should get some pretty good tyre life 😂 Enjoy

I agree with your analysis. For having had the 2019, I appreciate even more the improvements of the engine and chassis. On a negative level, what bothers me the most is the turning radius. For the suspension settings do not hesitate to keep us informed in case of changes over the kilometers 😃. I will test your settings this weekend. I will see how the bike reacts and if I feel more comfortable to attack.
I only had a very brief ride on the previous generation MT09, I thought it was a great bike but I think new version really has moved the bike on to a whole new level. The turning circle is a bit of a shame, I'm surprised they couldn't overcome this with some headstock modifications when they designed the new frame. Enjoy your weekend 👍
@@tankslapmoto9999 I just came back from my ride. Just wow! Much healthier motorcycle on the bumps and a pleasure in the corners. I just have the feeling that the rear end may still be too soft, especially in the middle/exit of the turn or it gently slides out. Maybe it need more compression on the damper.. I will try. @Lucifer Great to hear👍 it sounds like you are not too far off finding that perfect setting, like you say, maybe just a couple clicks more of compression damping to stop the bike squatting mid corner and pushing the tire. It might also be that you are carrying more corner speed😜
Great review looking to switch from xsr900 to this bike. On the xsr900 the handle bars are wobbly at high speed specially when accelerating hard. Do you get the same on this bike or the hand bars are stable at high speeds?
Thanks 👍 It does wag the handlebars under hard acceleration but, in my experience, this is due to the front wheel skimming the tarmac and the bars not always being straight as you accelerate. It never gets nasty, (no need for a steering damper). I find it to be very stable at high speeds.
Hey mate, any comment on the yamaha fly screen? Does it actually help with some wind deflection or is it just for looks? Not sure if i should get that one or a larger windshield.
My new SP is has passed the break in period and I love it!!! Now at 1600 miles. Thanks again for all of your great videos! The clutch feel that I mentioned in my previous comment is much better now. No more shuddering when clutch initially engages. I have had several false neutrals between 1st and 2nd, using the clutch, but think this is operator error. Just need to keep more upward pressure on lever when shifting to 2nd. Have you considered the optional Yamaha heated grips? They are not available from Yamaha in the US, but think that I can order them from the UK, but do not see a way to control them on the screen, when scrolling through the menu. Can you see the grip warmer selection in your screen menu, without the grips connected? Maybe the grip warmer menu is only visible when they are connected to wiring harness?
Thanks for watching the videos! Glad to hear that the clutch has smoothed out. I have never had a false neutral although I know others have. I think you do have to be fairly positive with the shifts (especially between 1st & 2nd). I tend to use the quickshifter if accelerating hard/under load in 1st otherwise I use the clutch if cruising. I have considered the heated grips, I believe they just plug in and the settings will appear on the dash, I'm fairly sure the gen 2 MT09/Tracer grips will also work if that helps in finding any in the USA. I live in northern Thailand most of the year. I am thinking of buying the base model as the SP isn't available here. I like your gloves. What are they, please? If it feels like a motocross bike, I'll like it. I am retired and have ridden all sorts of bikes [B-King, XB12X to name two] and currently ride a KTM 390 Duke. Similar riding position to this, by the looks of it. The cam-chain tensioner has always been a hydraulic one on the 09s, hasn't it? The turning circle is like my old 950 Adventure. I almost dropped it on my first ride back in 2005. First-class review. Miles better than most on here. I have subscribed.
Northern Thailand is a beautiful place to live and ride👍(I rode a scooter when I visited a few years ago now, but it was still great fun). The base model MT is a great bike, very similar to the SP. Gloves are RST Tractech EVO 4's. I thought the older MTt's cam tensioner was a spring loaded ratchet system but I could well be wrong. Thanks for subscribing 👍
@@tankslapmoto9999 I got my information on the original 09's cam chain tensioner from RevZilla. They highlighted it as being troublesome and fitted a manual one to their XSR. I spotted RST on your gloves later and looked them up. The Tractech EVO 4 was the one I settled on. Great value gloves. Why pay more. My daily ride around Chiang Rai is a scooter: Yamaha Aerox 155. Apart from the dire suspension, it is brilliant.
I think the M1200 is a great bike, the new MT09 is just a bit more modern and feels significantly lighter and more nimble. Completely different engine to the big v twin but still very exciting, I'd imagine acceleration would be very similar, the quick shift on the MT is very smooth as well (probably one of the stand out features along with the engine). I do love Ducati's but I personally fancied a change from the big v twin, I wanted something a bit more civilized/smooth when just cruising👍
I’ve been on the fence with getting this bike, only for the wind on some of my longer rides, averaging about an hour and a half on the highway doing roughly 65 to 80 miles per hour. I’m used to doing it on a fully faired bike. Does that small windscreen help?
The fly screen does take some wind pressure off of the chest area, it is definitely noticable, although it does create a little bit of wind buffeting (for me at 6"2").
I like that you can still have TCS on & turn off Stability Control and Lift Control under the Manual Setting. Or if you feeling frisky, just shut it all off. Except ABS of course. Which I'd never remember to turn back on anyway. 🤭
I totally agree, the manual setting is a game changer and with Yamaha "Manual" means Manual. So many modern bikes have custom settings but more often than not you can't split out the various systems or you can't have traction control without wheelie control. The one thing I wish it did have was supermoto mode...for example the Aprilia 660 let's you disable the rear abs. I guess you can't have it all😂
@@teevarley I think there is something special about Ducati ownership but I prefer the new MT09 over the Monster. I have ridden them back to back on many occasions and as great as the Monster is, there's just something so engaging about the new MT09. The light weight, the handling, the characterful engine, the metallic sound...it just all adds up to a great usable performance package.

Cheers👍 I really like the Z900rs, I haven't ridden one, but it is a great looking bike and Kawasaki usually make cracking 4 cylinder engines. I have read that the ride by wire is a little on/off.
I haven't unfortunately, I'd love a go on one. I have spoken to a couple people that have ridden them and they say it's very much an MT at heart, same playful nature but just a bit more grown up and practical.

Thanks for sharing your experience and the beautiful area that you ride in! Really appreciate your technical emphasis and of course your awesome riding skill! Cant wait until break in period is complete with oil change, so I can feel some naughtiness! Did you feel any clutch shuddering when you first got your bike? I feel a little bit, only at low rpms when engaging. Seems to be fine with higher rpm engagement, just trying to be cautious and gentle during break in.

I have never noticed any clutch judder on my particular bike but interestingly I did notice it on the bike that I originally test rode. I noticed it pulling out of the dealership at low rpm. I'm sure that with a few more miles it will break in nicely, it's probably just the new clutch pack being a little grabby.
@PhrozenPhlanges No never had any false neutrals at all on the MT, (had a few with the Ducati). I use the clutch between 1st and 2nd probably 70% of the time or if I use the quick shifter between 1st and 2nd the bike is usually under load/higher rpm so maybe less likely to snag neutral. I had an SV650, and the SV1000 (great bikes).

Everything you said answers questions Iv had with my bike, even the tinking when cold, something I noticed the day I had it, Could you shed some light on the lift control for me, I’m not mechanically minded and just wondered what it’s actually doing. Is it stopping the front coming up per higher setting or is it allowing the front wheel to lift higher per lower setting before cutting in and stopping it go over.... my heads telling me it’s about stopping it leaving the floor not how high it lifts
Thanks mate, I appreciate the support! I think the lift control essentially uses the IMU to determine the angle of attack of the front wheel and the rate at which the wheel is rising. It closes the throttle butterflys and retards the ignition timing to maintain a given angle of attack and rate of climb (say 30 degrees in mode 1, 20 degrees in mode 2 etc.) irrespective of throttle position. It's quite sophisticated, and appears to me to be programmed slightly different for each gear (more intervention as speeds rise). Out of pure interest for how it works, I tried nailing the throttle to the stop in 1st gear with lift control in mode 1 and it just carries a nice 30ish degree angle all the way to the rev limiter. I then tried it in 2nd gear and it seemed to be more tame, allowing only a 10-15 degree angle with a slower rate of climb all the way to the rev limiter.
TankslapMoto thanks 👍 Iv watched how you ride the mt and it made me realise I was riding it abit to aggressive. (As in on the throttle) I was abit snap on and off. so today I started rolling on smoothly untill in the power range and then giving it that flick and slight shift of weight back and she was powering up so smoothly compared to just snapping the throttle back from the get go. Your content is some of the best I watch pal, so keep it up!
@@tankslapmoto9999 exactly this. It nearly caught me out on mine, I had been practicing the wheelies in LIFT mode 1 for about 600 miles and felt like taking the next step with the LIFT control set to off. Hadn't quite comprehended how much the electronics were slowing the rate in which the front wheel lifted as well as how high it let it lift. The first 2nd gear clutch up I did with LIFT control off and I very very very nearly looped it. The LIFT control is fantastic but it causes you to be way more aggressive with the throttle and clutch than you need to be. Now with LIFT control off I don't need to give it half as many revs or be half as aggressive on the clutch. Lesson learnt 😬
Great review very informative I pick mine up this month the SP of course but the one thing I wish Yamaha would do is on their premium machines have the brimbo and 50 calipers and master cylinder it would make a complete package unfortunately these brakes are a little bit long in the tooth
Thanks for the support. I totally agree about the brakes, they are good brakes but like you say the calipers are a little bit long in the tooth. Especially coming from a bike with the latest and greatest Brembo items. I might do a Brembo setup over the winter as a bit of a project🤔 There's quite a few options for 108mm calipers, although I will probably do braided lines and an RCS Corsa Corta Master cylinder first. Great video! Just a quick question about your visor. Do you use it all year round or just in the summer? I have same one on RX 7V and it really bad this time of the year and can’t put pinlock. Tried with stick on one and it didn’t work well.
Cheers 👍 I don't really use the visor all that much in the winter, it does steam up in the cold. Bit naf that Arai don't make them pinlock compatible really but I guess that it's "not for road use"...
How do power wheelie in 3rd? I'm only just learning how to do it in 2nd, gotta be doing about 80kph before it starts to lift, but had very few opportunities to try it because the speed limit is 50kph in town and then transitions to 100kph

Hey, the fly screen does take a little wind pressure off of the chest area at speed but it does create some slight buffeting noise for me at 6'2", I'd say it's more for aesthetics than anything else. Im an old mt03 (2016) rider, wanna upgrade to mt09 and I've tried both base model and the SP but both were without flyscreen, and after 100mph I had some serious struggle with the wind. Im 6'1 and 130lbs so the struggle is real :) What do you think about a screen %50 percent bigger than yours, like a mid size windscreen would make a difference? I imagine if i wont get hit on chest so much it would be easier to stay comfy on highway speeds
@AC K no worries, I haven't tried the "touring" screens on the MT but I'm sure that they would make a significant difference. I own a Multistrada with a tallish screen and 85mph on that feels like 30mph on the MT!
Great review bud. I too have the Gen 3. Oddly enough, agree with you reference the Cam chain rattle. Didn't expect that on a modern bike. One point I was going to ask Yamaha dealer what the problem is. Tyres are great, plenty of grip. Great position too. 700 miles on mine at present. Will be a dry bike if I have my way however. Lol.

Maybe they will do a recall on the tensioner, I thought it was linked to oil pressure but thinking about it, usually (even when the tensioner is oil fed) it works on a ratchet system so the cam chain should never really go slack... even at idle. Maybe this one works differently, I did quiz the dealer at the 1st service and they weren't too clued up.
Hi mate just a quick one, I'm assuming at just over 1k miles that you like me still have the S22's on, what tyre pressures are you running? everyone and his uncle stick to 36 42 but a lot of folk run different pressures for all sorts of reasons, 36 42 is all fine and good but I'm thinking (16-17 stone with gear on) maybe I'm missing out on a better pressure setting?.
Hey mate yes still running the S22's. To be honest, you can't go far wrong with the standard 36/42 on the road but I always feel like that's a tad high. I tend to run them slightly lower (about 35/38). My thinking is that I'd rather the tyre have more contact patch and feel like it "digs in" a bit more, but it's probably all in my head😂.
What keeps me from chosing this bike is 1. i really dislike the headlight 2. less covering on the side 3. steeringwheel i do not like at all 4. standard exaust pipe looks weird. Waiting for the z900 to have some QS and blippers :p

@smithy246 I personally find D mode 1 a little bit too sensitive for the finer throttle increments. It's not bad or anything, but I just find mode 2 easier to modulate when going fast, or if it slides, or for tiny adjustment whilst the front wheel is up.
Hi, yes it's the genuine Yamaha item, believe they call it a "fly screen". In terms of wind protection, it does provide some relief to the chest area (not a huge amount although it is noticable) but I do get a little bit of noise/wind buffeting at 6 feet 2 at motorway speeds.

I'm going for a test ride on the standard MT-09 when I get my Tenere 700 serviced soon, as my dealer has no SP's in stock. Then, I plan to buy a 2022 MT-09 SP sometime early next year.
@@tankslapmoto9999 Cheers. I love the Tenere 700, and it's very utilitarian, but I need a lighter bike with 17" wheels, making it easier to handle, and I want more power. All things considered, I think the MT-09 SP will be perfect for me after I've added a few accessories.
@@tankslapmoto9999 It's a cracking bike, it goes up hills like they're not there, and it sounds wonderful even with the stock exhaust. I've got a shoulder and a back problem, so moving a top-heavy bike, with large heavy wheels, an OEM rear rack, an OEM centre stand, and with bars and lights can be a bit of a pain - literally - it probably weighs-in at about 220kgs! Saying that, I have got use to moving and riding the bike now; I know its foibles. If you ever get one and drop it, they're quite hard to pickup, because it lies close to the ground. The best technique for lifting a Tenere 700 is to point the front wheel upwards, and then use the handle bar as a lever to lift it. The usual recommended back-to-the-seat method is for bigger bikes like the BMW R1250GS with a flat boxer engine, which conveniently lie at about 30 degrees from the ground when you drop one - which you will! The Tenere 700, as good as it is, is built to a budget, and you can feel that in the suspension set-up; it's too soft and Yamaha really need to upgrade it. The bike has plenty of character, it's great in traffic, and will put a smile on your face. It's just that I've decided that I really need a lighter bike; I also want more a bit more power, and I do miss those 17" wheels! I don't really go off-road much, so an MT-09 SP, with a screen, and a removable back box would suit me just fine; the cruise control will be a big help as well. Every reviewer seems to really enjoy riding the MT-09 SP, so I can't wait for the 2022 version to arrive, but I can't see Yamaha making any major changes to the bike, maybe a tweak to the colourway.
I was set on buying a street triple rs, but every video I see for the mt09 is pushing me in that direction.. Not really interested in cruise and I could live without the Ohlins, so it's probably gonna be the base model..
Both great bikes, 765rs is probably a little bit more "sporty" but it depends what you like, the electronics are more advanced on the MT (imu, separating wheelie control from traction control etc) the quick shifter is crisper on the MT, significantly more midrange on the MT but the triumph is more rev happy, if you enjoy higher rpm's. It's a tough choice, the finish on the triumph is nice, triumph has better brakes, and it's nice to buy British (even if it is made in Thailand).

The dealership said it's nothing to worry about and that they all do it... Only need to be concerned if the rattle was constant, which would indicate a failed tensioner

On my first day I drove 400km from a dealership floor and I thought damn this suspension needs to go all the way to the soft side. But as I continued to riding on stock settings not changing anything, suspension was better and better day after day of riding this thing. Love this bike

I'm sure that you would like the new MT09, I have ridden all sorts of bikes over the years but I'm currently a big fan of the middle weight nakeds on the road. The MT09's 120ish hp feels more like 150hp, probably because of the weight, wheelbase & gearing.

Brillant review - I got the weight down to 185 kg wet as well as the upgrade to the braided brake lines with uprated brake pads, works very well all day at the race track😉🏁🏁
Thanks! Yours sounds like a weapon, I changed out the whole braking system for Brembo on mine (master cylinder, calipers, ss lines the lot) but it wasn't necessary to be honest, stock setup worked well with just some decent pads👍

Really great way to show the handling at 8:30. That power wheelie on a narrow lumpy road is a tough test of suspension. You have to have confidence in the suspension to pull off that move (unless you're as boneheaded as I used to be).

I have the base model because it’s near impossible to find an SP anywhere around here. I love it. Would love if it also had cruise control. Other than that I have no complaints. Trying to get used to the feeling of the front wheel being up in the air. I rode cruisers for the past 7 years. The front wheel only came up on me once on a cruiser because I had a passenger onboard. Other than that I only did wheelies on bicycles as a kid and I wasn’t very good at them lol.
The base model is a great bike, more than enough for the street and probably better colours. She sure does like to lift that front wheel, should get some pretty good tyre life 😂 Enjoy

I agree with your analysis. For having had the 2019, I appreciate even more the improvements of the engine and chassis. On a negative level, what bothers me the most is the turning radius.
For the suspension settings do not hesitate to keep us informed in case of changes over the kilometers 😃.
I will test your settings this weekend. I will see how the bike reacts and if I feel more comfortable to attack.
I only had a very brief ride on the previous generation MT09, I thought it was a great bike but I think new version really has moved the bike on to a whole new level. The turning circle is a bit of a shame, I'm surprised they couldn't overcome this with some headstock modifications when they designed the new frame. Enjoy your weekend 👍

I don’t think the turning is that much of an issue. It could and probably should be better but I have not found it that much of a hindrance so far
@@tankslapmoto9999 I just came back from my ride. Just wow! Much healthier motorcycle on the bumps and a pleasure in the corners. I just have the feeling that the rear end may still be too soft, especially in the middle/exit of the turn or it gently slides out. Maybe it need more compression on the damper.. I will try.

@Lucifer Great to hear👍 it sounds like you are not too far off finding that perfect setting, like you say, maybe just a couple clicks more of compression damping to stop the bike squatting mid corner and pushing the tire. It might also be that you are carrying more corner speed😜

Great review looking to switch from xsr900 to this bike. On the xsr900 the handle bars are wobbly at high speed specially when accelerating hard. Do you get the same on this bike or the hand bars are stable at high speeds?
Thanks 👍 It does wag the handlebars under hard acceleration but, in my experience, this is due to the front wheel skimming the tarmac and the bars not always being straight as you accelerate. It never gets nasty, (no need for a steering damper). I find it to be very stable at high speeds.
Hey mate, any comment on the yamaha fly screen? Does it actually help with some wind deflection or is it just for looks? Not sure if i should get that one or a larger windshield.
Hi mate, it's just for looks in my opinion. It does offer a tiny bit of wind deflection but not much, maybe I'm too tall at 6.2. It looks cool though😉
My new SP is has passed the break in period and I love it!!! Now at 1600 miles. Thanks again for all of your great videos! The clutch feel that I mentioned in my previous comment is much better now. No more shuddering when clutch initially engages. I have had several false neutrals between 1st and 2nd, using the clutch, but think this is operator error. Just need to keep more upward pressure on lever when shifting to 2nd. Have you considered the optional Yamaha heated grips? They are not available from Yamaha in the US, but think that I can order them from the UK, but do not see a way to control them on the screen, when scrolling through the menu. Can you see the grip warmer selection in your screen menu, without the grips connected? Maybe the grip warmer menu is only visible when they are connected to wiring harness?
Thanks for watching the videos! Glad to hear that the clutch has smoothed out. I have never had a false neutral although I know others have. I think you do have to be fairly positive with the shifts (especially between 1st & 2nd). I tend to use the quickshifter if accelerating hard/under load in 1st otherwise I use the clutch if cruising. I have considered the heated grips, I believe they just plug in and the settings will appear on the dash, I'm fairly sure the gen 2 MT09/Tracer grips will also work if that helps in finding any in the USA. The cam-chain tensioner has always been a hydraulic one on the 09s, hasn't it?
The turning circle is like my old 950 Adventure. I almost dropped it on my first ride back in 2005.

Northern Thailand is a beautiful place to live and ride👍(I rode a scooter when I visited a few years ago now, but it was still great fun). The base model MT is a great bike, very similar to the SP. Gloves are RST Tractech EVO 4's. I thought the older MTt's cam tensioner was a spring loaded ratchet system but I could well be wrong. Thanks for subscribing 👍
@@tankslapmoto9999 I got my information on the original 09's cam chain tensioner from RevZilla. They highlighted it as being troublesome and fitted a manual one to their XSR.
I spotted RST on your gloves later and looked them up. The Tractech EVO 4 was the one I settled on. Great value gloves. Why pay more.

I think the M1200 is a great bike, the new MT09 is just a bit more modern and feels significantly lighter and more nimble. Completely different engine to the big v twin but still very exciting, I'd imagine acceleration would be very similar, the quick shift on the MT is very smooth as well (probably one of the stand out features along with the engine). I do love Ducati's but I personally fancied a change from the big v twin, I wanted something a bit more civilized/smooth when just cruising👍
I’ve been on the fence with getting this bike, only for the wind on some of my longer rides, averaging about an hour and a half on the highway doing roughly 65 to 80 miles per hour. I’m used to doing it on a fully faired bike. Does that small windscreen help?
The fly screen does take some wind pressure off of the chest area, it is definitely noticable, although it does create a little bit of wind buffeting (for me at 6"2").
I like that you can still have TCS on & turn off Stability Control and Lift Control under the Manual Setting. Or if you feeling frisky, just shut it all off. Except ABS of course. Which I'd never remember to turn back on anyway. 🤭
I totally agree, the manual setting is a game changer and with Yamaha "Manual" means Manual. So many modern bikes have custom settings but more often than not you can't split out the various systems or you can't have traction control without wheelie control. The one thing I wish it did have was supermoto mode...for example the Aprilia 660 let's you disable the rear abs. I guess you can't have it all😂

@@teevarley I think there is something special about Ducati ownership but I prefer the new MT09 over the Monster. I have ridden them back to back on many occasions and as great as the Monster is, there's just something so engaging about the new MT09. The light weight, the handling, the characterful engine, the metallic sound...it just all adds up to a great usable performance package.

I haven't unfortunately, I'd love a go on one. I have spoken to a couple people that have ridden them and they say it's very much an MT at heart, same playful nature but just a bit more grown up and practical.

Cant wait until break in period is complete with oil change, so I can feel some naughtiness! Did you feel any clutch shuddering when you first got your bike? I feel a little bit, only at low rpms when engaging. Seems to be fine with higher rpm engagement, just trying to be cautious and gentle during break in.

I have never noticed any clutch judder on my particular bike but interestingly I did notice it on the bike that I originally test rode. I noticed it pulling out of the dealership at low rpm. I'm sure that with a few more miles it will break in nicely, it's probably just the new clutch pack being a little grabby.

@PhrozenPhlanges No never had any false neutrals at all on the MT, (had a few with the Ducati). I use the clutch between 1st and 2nd probably 70% of the time or if I use the quick shifter between 1st and 2nd the bike is usually under load/higher rpm so maybe less likely to snag neutral. I had an SV650, and the SV1000 (great bikes).

Could you shed some light on the lift control for me, I’m not mechanically minded and just wondered what it’s actually doing. Is it stopping the front coming up per higher setting or is it allowing the front wheel to lift higher per lower setting before cutting in and stopping it go over.... my heads telling me it’s about stopping it leaving the floor not how high it lifts
Thanks mate, I appreciate the support! I think the lift control essentially uses the IMU to determine the angle of attack of the front wheel and the rate at which the wheel is rising. It closes the throttle butterflys and retards the ignition timing to maintain a given angle of attack and rate of climb (say 30 degrees in mode 1, 20 degrees in mode 2 etc.) irrespective of throttle position. It's quite sophisticated, and appears to me to be programmed slightly different for each gear (more intervention as speeds rise). Out of pure interest for how it works, I tried nailing the throttle to the stop in 1st gear with lift control in mode 1 and it just carries a nice 30ish degree angle all the way to the rev limiter. I then tried it in 2nd gear and it seemed to be more tame, allowing only a 10-15 degree angle with a slower rate of climb all the way to the rev limiter.

Iv watched how you ride the mt and it made me realise I was riding it abit to aggressive. (As in on the throttle) I was abit snap on and off. so today I started rolling on smoothly untill in the power range and then giving it that flick and slight shift of weight back and she was powering up so smoothly compared to just snapping the throttle back from the get go.

It nearly caught me out on mine, I had been practicing the wheelies in LIFT mode 1 for about 600 miles and felt like taking the next step with the LIFT control set to off. Hadn't quite comprehended how much the electronics were slowing the rate in which the front wheel lifted as well as how high it let it lift. The first 2nd gear clutch up I did with LIFT control off and I very very very nearly looped it. The LIFT control is fantastic but it causes you to be way more aggressive with the throttle and clutch than you need to be. Now with LIFT control off I don't need to give it half as many revs or be half as aggressive on the clutch. Lesson learnt 😬

Great review very informative I pick mine up this month the SP of course but the one thing I wish Yamaha would do is on their premium machines have the brimbo and 50 calipers and master cylinder it would make a complete package unfortunately these brakes are a little bit long in the tooth
Thanks for the support. I totally agree about the brakes, they are good brakes but like you say the calipers are a little bit long in the tooth. Especially coming from a bike with the latest and greatest Brembo items. I might do a Brembo setup over the winter as a bit of a project🤔 There's quite a few options for 108mm calipers, although I will probably do braided lines and an RCS Corsa Corta Master cylinder first. Great video! Just a quick question about your visor. Do you use it all year round or just in the summer? I have same one on RX 7V and it really bad this time of the year and can’t put pinlock. Tried with stick on one and it didn’t work well.

How do power wheelie in 3rd? I'm only just learning how to do it in 2nd, gotta be doing about 80kph before it starts to lift, but had very few opportunities to try it because the speed limit is 50kph in town and then transitions to 100kph

Hey, the fly screen does take a little wind pressure off of the chest area at speed but it does create some slight buffeting noise for me at 6'2", I'd say it's more for aesthetics than anything else. Im an old mt03 (2016) rider, wanna upgrade to mt09 and I've tried both base model and the SP but both were without flyscreen, and after 100mph I had some serious struggle with the wind. Im 6'1 and 130lbs so the struggle is real :) What do you think about a screen %50 percent bigger than yours, like a mid size windscreen would make a difference? I imagine if i wont get hit on chest so much it would be easier to stay comfy on highway speeds
@AC K no worries, I haven't tried the "touring" screens on the MT but I'm sure that they would make a significant difference. I own a Multistrada with a tallish screen and 85mph on that feels like 30mph on the MT!
Great review bud. I too have the Gen 3. Oddly enough, agree with you reference the Cam chain rattle. Didn't expect that on a modern bike. One point I was going to ask Yamaha dealer what the problem is. Tyres are great, plenty of grip. Great position too. 700 miles on mine at present. Will be a dry bike if I have my way however. Lol.

Maybe they will do a recall on the tensioner, I thought it was linked to oil pressure but thinking about it, usually (even when the tensioner is oil fed) it works on a ratchet system so the cam chain should never really go slack... even at idle. Maybe this one works differently, I did quiz the dealer at the 1st service and they weren't too clued up.

Hi mate just a quick one, I'm assuming at just over 1k miles that you like me still have the S22's on, what tyre pressures are you running? everyone and his uncle stick to 36 42 but a lot of folk run different pressures for all sorts of reasons, 36 42 is all fine and good but I'm thinking (16-17 stone with gear on) maybe I'm missing out on a better pressure setting?.
Hey mate yes still running the S22's. To be honest, you can't go far wrong with the standard 36/42 on the road but I always feel like that's a tad high. I tend to run them slightly lower (about 35/38). My thinking is that I'd rather the tyre have more contact patch and feel like it "digs in" a bit more, but it's probably all in my head😂.

What keeps me from chosing this bike is 1. i really dislike the headlight 2. less covering on the side 3. steeringwheel i do not like at all 4. standard exaust pipe looks weird. Waiting for the z900 to have some QS and blippers :p

@smithy246 I personally find D mode 1 a little bit too sensitive for the finer throttle increments. It's not bad or anything, but I just find mode 2 easier to modulate when going fast, or if it slides, or for tiny adjustment whilst the front wheel is up.

Hi, yes it's the genuine Yamaha item, believe they call it a "fly screen". In terms of wind protection, it does provide some relief to the chest area (not a huge amount although it is noticable) but I do get a little bit of noise/wind buffeting at 6 feet 2 at motorway speeds.

I have always been quite tempted by the Tenere 700, it certainly looks the part, I have ridden the xsr700 a bunch and really rate that CP2 engine.
@@tankslapmoto9999 It's a cracking bike, it goes up hills like they're not there, and it sounds wonderful even with the stock exhaust. I've got a shoulder and a back problem, so moving a top-heavy bike, with large heavy wheels, an OEM rear rack, an OEM centre stand, and with bars and lights can be a bit of a pain - literally - it probably weighs-in at about 220kgs! Saying that, I have got use to moving and riding the bike now; I know its foibles. If you ever get one and drop it, they're quite hard to pickup, because it lies close to the ground. The best technique for lifting a Tenere 700 is to point the front wheel upwards, and then use the handle bar as a lever to lift it. The usual recommended back-to-the-seat method is for bigger bikes like the BMW R1250GS with a flat boxer engine, which conveniently lie at about 30 degrees from the ground when you drop one - which you will! The Tenere 700, as good as it is, is built to a budget, and you can feel that in the suspension set-up; it's too soft and Yamaha really need to upgrade it. The bike has plenty of character, it's great in traffic, and will put a smile on your face. It's just that I've decided that I really need a lighter bike; I also want more a bit more power, and I do miss those 17" wheels! I don't really go off-road much, so an MT-09 SP, with a screen, and a removable back box would suit me just fine; the cruise control will be a big help as well. Every reviewer seems to really enjoy riding the MT-09 SP, so I can't wait for the 2022 version to arrive, but I can't see Yamaha making any major changes to the bike, maybe a tweak to the colourway.
I was set on buying a street triple rs, but every video I see for the mt09 is pushing me in that direction.. Not really interested in cruise and I could live without the Ohlins, so it's probably gonna be the base model..
Both great bikes, 765rs is probably a little bit more "sporty" but it depends what you like, the electronics are more advanced on the MT (imu, separating wheelie control from traction control etc) the quick shifter is crisper on the MT, significantly more midrange on the MT but the triumph is more rev happy, if you enjoy higher rpm's. It's a tough choice, the finish on the triumph is nice, triumph has better brakes, and it's nice to buy British (even if it is made in Thailand).

Yamaha has told you the rattle is oaky, I've heard it myself too.
The dealership said it's nothing to worry about and that they all do it... Only need to be concerned if the rattle was constant, which would indicate a failed tensioner
