My friend Jessie has lived in this country for ten years and I have lived here for 4. These are 11 things we've found curious and in some cases, hard to get used to.

Cuanta razón. No abren su mente, la escuela de EEUU les hace mucho daño y se creen el ombligo del planeta
Muchas de las cosas que decís no son ciertas, o estáis exagerando mucho, por lo menos tenemos la suerte de ir tranquilos por la calle sin que en cualquier momento no nos saquen una pistola de algún bolsillo, y prefiero un niño en un bar que sosteniendo un arma que ha encontrado en el cajón de su padre
Practicante todos los baños tienen dispensador de jabón y secamamos puede haver excepciones pero lo normal es que haya jabón y papel si se acaba el papel mal asunto
hay una cosa que no se han dado cuenta, en España nadie lleva armas.
The reason for the kids in bars thing, or playgrounds in bar areas, is because in Spain (and generally in mediterranean cultures), eating and drinking outside is usually seeing as a communal thing. People go there with their families to meet their friends, people know each other, they eat together, they drink together and they talk. It is a community. If you see it that way, there is not reason to exclude the children, because they are also part of the community. There they can play with friends, while being near their parents, uncles, cousins, family friends, and whoever else is there. If people want to go to places that are not family friendly, they can also do that, but most bars in Spain are for families.
As spanish I've felt always awkward in greetings. I'm not keen on giving some kisses (even when sometimes they aren't exactly kisses) to someone I've just been introduced to.
I'ts probably because I am the introvert type and this trait is regardless of nationality.

En la mitad de los baños de bar que he estado en mi vida no iba el jabón, o no quedaba. Yo me lavo las manos solo con agua. Las mujeres, tal y como dice Emma, se llevan toallitas higiénicas y pasan de acercarse al lavabo.
I don't know in which restaurants or other public places you've been but in Spain people do wash their hands after using the bathroom

@@piedadsaiz Well maybe it happend in really poor areas or neighborhoods. I seldom see people who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom. Same for Restaurants or bars without soap gel, it must be a very filthy place for filthy people. Also from Spain

Me da rabia cuando los estadounidenses se llaman americanos o a EEUU lo llaman América. América es muchísimo más que Estados Unidos
About not washing your hands when you finish in the bathroom... As you have mentioned before, in many Bars/Restaurants there is no soap and/or paper towels to dry... So people prefer to leave without washing, before than touching a sink where people have placed their hands after doing... You know...
In my case, if there is no soap, I try to wash my hands with water... only if I can turn on the tap with the sides of my hands, that is, without using my fingers, which are the ones used for eating.
Cuando veo estos videos llenos de estereotipos en el qie no paran de hablar de choques culturales que les perturban, lo único que puedo aconsejar es que vayan a un psicólogo para poder entender que el mundo no gira alrededor de ellos y si hay otras culturas y si nos lavamos las manos despues de ir al lavabo
Es normal tener choques cuando uno visita un país extranjero, lo que compartimos son meras observaciones. Te entiendo porque sé que duele cuando critican nuestra cultura… me molesta cuando critican USA aunque está claro que en la mayoría de los casos, tienen razón 🙃

You should go to Latin America if think that personal space is not really a thing in Spain... If I lived in Spain I would have to up my game and dress a lot better than I do in the UK. Fashion is a big thing in Spain.
I'm surprised you mentioned the staring, but said nothing of public displays of afection, which is something that makes people form uptight cultures go crazy. 😜 Just have in mind there's no word in Spanish for "stare", it's just "look". 😉
Wow good point! I never realized that the word start doesn’t exist in Spanish. The amount of time I’ve seen people making out (and even more) in parks is insane, that never happens in the usa lol

I've never understood all the hype with Mercadona, I've been there once and the variety of food and the quality of the fresh food is not what I'm used to. Maybe it's because I live in a village in the outskirts north of Barcelona and I shop at the village market and in another local supermarket chain (Sorli). But if you want to go to an outstanding supermarket in terms of quality and variety, you should try to go to El Corte Inglés supermarket (both the regular and the Club del Gourmet).
Local supermarkets in villages, towns or small cities almost always have better quality products than big chains in cities. Big difference in quality, usually. People like Mercadona because it is not too expensive, the quality is fine, and I think they also have a reputation for treating their employees better than other chains, so people support it (at least that is what I have been told).
El Corte Inglés is higher quality yes, not only for food, but in general. And it used to be even higher quality than it is now, the quality has gone down in the last 15 years to some extent, although it is still better than most other places. It is also more expensive, though.
Mercadona is a good, solid supermarket - mid range. Only shop for food at El Corte Inglés if you're made of money. Carrefour (the French chain) is very good.

¡Tengo una duda! cuando dices: "americans", no se si eres "de argentina, de cuba, de chile... "A no ser que exista un país llamado "américa", porque creo que "América es un CONTINENTE", pero tal vez esté yo equivocado. ¿me lo explicas? Gracias.
Es que América también es el nombre del país. Coincide con el del continente, sí.
El país se llama Estados Unidos de América, como México se llama Estados Unidos Mexicanos pero todos decimos México. Al no coincidir con el continente no hay problema.
Están hablando en inglés. El gentilicio de su país en inglés es American.
En mi DNI pone Reino de España y no decimos "soy del Reino".
El país se llama United States of America..
Aquí para evitar la confusión con el continente decimos Estados Unidos, pero es como si a España le llamáramos Reino.
En inglés no se puede decir de otra manera... porque no existe.

What you said about many not washing their hands in the bathrooms there reminded me of experiencing the opposite in Turkey, where I was shocked by how many there do wash their hands in the bathroom. It's a quite high percentage.
It might be different in other parts of Spain, but I wish I could say the same! 😅

@@emlanguages No - just had parents who moved a lot! (I also lived in New Mexico and Michigan as a child.) That's cool that you grew up in Auburn and went to UW. Later, after PLU, I lived in the U District for a year. I don't think I've ever spent time in Auburn, but I've definitely been through it and knew people from there.

On the other hand, American culture is based on European culture, which differs little from country to country.
American culture is a mixture of various cultures of people who emigrated from different countries, which is why we cannot speak of American culture as such.

@@ismaelmad1, eso no lo usa absolutamente nadie, es un neologismo (un invento) un tanto absurdo. "American" tiene 200 años de uso.
No es necesario saludar con 2 besos. Es algo nuevo que se ha introducido entre los jóvenes. Normalmente saludamos estrechando las manos. No obligatorio besar a nadie y menos aún si no te agrada hacerlo.
¿Perdón? Querrás decir que saludar dándose la mano en lugar de dar dos besos se ha puesto de moda entre los jóvenes. A los de mi generación y más mayores nos reñían como no diéramos dos besos. Igual lo que quieres decir es que ahora puedes ver incluso a dos chicos dándose dos besos, si tienen mucha confianza entre ellos, mientras que tradicionalmente solo eran las mujeres las que tenían que besar a todo el mundo.

The topic of greeting with a kiss: Italians start “kissing” from THEIR left side (when they kiss) because they... write from left to right. But they don't kiss everyone, like you may think, and it's not a real kiss: it's just a light touch on the cheeks.
By the way: Have you never seen politicians of all nationalities meet? They love kissing each other. Even very serious men do this.
Giving someone a kiss when you meet them is a great way to break the ice 😆
