As a long term(18 years), British born, and very content resident of The Costa Blanca here in Spain, I would like to add a couple of salient points to those already expressed. Firstly, as a "Senior" resident now(I am 74 and partially disabled) I am treated with dignity and respect, unlike
London(U.K.) where I lived for 12 years and where all too often, I was met with irritation, ridicule, even downright rudeness. Admittedly I live in a small, mostly Spanish "Pueblo" and cannot peak for major urban centres here, but the culture in Spain is just very different and respect for others is ingrained from a very early age. In truth in 18 years here, I have Never felt to be at risk or vulnerable here.
Secondly is "The way/pace of life" in Spain. What many foreigners may not realise is that the Spanish work the most hours per week of any country in Europe, yet seem to have a far better "Work/Life" balance than virtually any other "First World" country. There is very little social pressure here to drive the most expensive cars, or wear currently, the most fashionable designer labels. Such things are simply unimportant to most Spaniards. So stress levels from the need to compete, are very much lower. I have listed just two examples which are difficult to equate in financial terms, but which are nevertheless important to me, regarding my life here in Spain... Viva Espana..!!!

I live in Denver. It’s not only the cost of living, but imo,and having lived in different states, Denver has little to offer for the price tag. I am a coastal person and miss being by the ocean. Congratulations! Have a wonderful life in Spain!
Spain has one the highest life expectancy, if not the highest.

Guarda mucha relación con lo que ha estado contando, y viviendo en Málaga no solo le será útil, sino también agradable. Los expertos dicen que los productos marinos se asimilan mejor por el cuerpo (¿Quizá porque la vida empezó en el mar?). De hecho, dos de los países con más esperanza de vida, Japón y España (y eso que en Japón el nivel de estrés es muy alto), son de los mayores consumidores de pescado.
La cocina mediterránea tiene sabrosísimas recetas con pescado y productos del mar, y en España la oferta es muy variada. Viniendo de los EUA, usted posiblemente no esté tan habituado, pero es algo que puede cambiar y, de verdad, es muy rico. Coma pescado, pulpo, u otro producto marino al menos una vez a la semana.

Además, el uso del picante (no toda la comida mexicana es picante, pero se hace más uso de ello que en Europa y no suelen abusar de concentraciones de picante tan fuertes como las del sudeste asiático) previene algunas afecciones del sistema digestivo. Acostumbrarse al picante es sano.
Espero que conozca España, y deseo que esté a la altura de sus expectativas.
Y con aceite de oliva virgen extra, aliñe sus ensaladas y cocine tambien en lugar de usar tanta mantequilla.

Regarding the public national healthcare service, it's much better than the private one for serious matters (cancer, emergencies, rare diseases, difficult births, etc) and you should always go there first if you want better service, better doctors, etc.
No hace falta un servicio médico privado, depende de donde vivas. La medicina preventiva para las personas mayores es muy buena por lo general, depende de las Comunidades

@@freelancelady I understand and agree that there are many “issues”, not only in Spain but in just about any other corner of the world. However, there are more “pluses” that seem to make it overall worthwhile. I happen to have Spanish descent on both sides of my family (great grandparents). At this stage of my life (I’m turning 70 in two weeks), It would be nice to explore and experience something new, that is worthwhile. Best wishes to you, and yours!
The big super mkts are open here on the coast of Castellón sundays during summer to cater to the tourists. After summer closed sundays.

Shops and supermarkets are open 7 days a week here in Madrid, and that could also include New Year’s day too; I’d also disagree on “working here is relax”, well that depends. Some of us also work longer hours (unfortunately).

You'd have to explain that the quiet sunny relaxed place your speaking about is only related to the south and east coasts of Spain. Central and nothern Spain are quite different.

You have already worked them in advance and then you have the right to use them as holidays (that's because working 40 hours a week you make more hours than the ones you need to fulfill your mandatory 1.800 yearly working hours). In the USA way, workers take the money of those hours in excess instead of the holidays... or other way of saying this... if you take some holidays then you don't make money... or, in your way of thinking, you lose that money. The question is easy... what do you prefer?

I’m glad it’s cheaper for you. But Málaga has become very expensive for locals thanks to airbnbs and higher income foreigners moving there. Your “half the rent of Denver” is way too high for locals. You’re also contributing to feeding the private health care industry (a monster US citizens know all too well). Be aware that locals will eventually resent you a lot (which is already happening).

You are so right, we live in Massachusetts it takes my husband 1 1/2 to get to work every morning traffic is a nightmare then a plus hour to get home in the afternoon
Our dream is to moved to Spain when we retire we haven’t decided where yet , we want to explore other city’s in Spain to see what works best for our life style. We been to Spain 7 times, Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga , Marbella.
Why don't you choose UK or Ireland? They speak English and you have more cultural similarities with them.

This was a good video. It was a very thoughtful comparison of the most important reasons to move from the US to Spain. Although the points you've made are applicable for many countries in Europe. I say this as a Brit who lives in rural Portugal. Although I work (remotely) with American colleagues and clients in the States (Texas/California) every day of the week and have worked in the US in the past (Atlanta, NYC and up-state New York) I'd never be tempted to move there for the reasons that you've highlighted. Quality of life is, in my humble opinion, superior in this part of the world. It's less stressful, healthier and you have time to enjoy your life with less pressure, worry and stress.

When I traveled the USA and Canada I usually paid quite a bit more in food. Be it restaurants or supermarkets, especially because in the USA you have to add sales tax and it's almost mandatory to pay 20% tip. In Europe vat is included in the prices, and Tip isn't mandatory, you pay a tip when you are satisfied, and not usually 20%, rather around 10% as rule of thumb.

I relate to what he says. I am 60 years old and I have now diabetes. Although it is manageable and not expensive I think nothing beats living in Europe where you don’t get broke over medical expenses. Food is more natural over there, some foods in the States are totally unhealthy. The problem relates also to the stress of life you experience in the States. Don’t get me wrong. Spaniards work very hard but the cut their day in half so you have at least a couple hours for lunch…going back to work from 4 pm to about 8pm. Also they have more holidays and at least one month vacation a year. The reason I moved to the States back in 1987 was because my husband is American and he had a stable situation. Back then there were fewer job opportunities in Europe in general, except in places like Germany, Holland and England. I was young and I wanted financial stability. Buy now I would not mind going back except that now I have a family in the States and it is important as you grow older to be close to family. And I still think Spain does not offer many job opportunities except for those who are working in healthcare, new technologies and computer systems. So being young and wanted that job security was important for me back then…it was another time and another life…
Full of good advice for those folks who find themselves struggling in the sociopolitical culture that the USA promotes. You've chosen Spain, but there are in fact numerous countries whose normal lifestyle is a step up from what many US citizens suffer. Best wishes to you.

I just sold everything and just a backpack. And duffel bag. Stored my books I wanted to keep at familly. Each time I visted take back with me little by little. And electricity is different here. And different plugs.

We moved here for the culture and the locals, a few years ago and would rather not see any part of it Americanized (by more of them coming in), these channels that tell people from back there they should come here, should all be shut down. I would recommend going downstairs, enjoying some Soulful Sourdough Bread and just contemplating the better way of life you have now chosen to live. Ta luego

I see 99% of these types of videos go on about how much cheaper this place is vs USA. Good info but all of these videos are carbon copies at this point. What is it that you do to generate income to pay for your daily life? If it’s a job, what kind of job add how much do you earn a year? If you are only basing your life off of UA-cam earnings, that would be good to know as well. Appreciate it.

@@alepunto7404That’s not true. I’m rich, I earn more than seven times the average salary in Spain, I never had a private insurance. Everytime I needed health care I’ve been atended by our national health service with good results, high technology and nice human asistence . Even my brother needed a lungh transplant and was succesfully fulfilled paying CERO euro. Compare that to USA. And do not lie about socialist politicians, thanks to them we have this incredible public service. Conservative parties don’t believe so much in our system and always try through low investment in public services to push people into private insurances wich is like shooting your toe.

I´m talking about statistics. 82% of public workers in Spain that have the possibility of choose between public and private healthcare, choose private (data from 2021). Rich people don´t go to public hospitals, they go to private clinics, here and abroad. Socialist politicians when need healthcare, go to private clinics (like Carmen Calvo at Clinica Ruber, or Dolores Delgado at Clinica Cemtro). Basically anyone that can afford private healthcare, choose private over public, even if that implies paying both, as paying public healthcare in Spain in mandatory.
If your brother paid cero euros, that doesn´t mean that healthcare is free. It is not. If your brother paid nothing, it means that other people were forced to pay the treatment of your brother with taxes. Because that argument that says that in Spain healthcare is free and expensive in the USA, if you think a little about it, makes no sense at all. ¿What do you mean, that doctors and nurses do not have a salary in Spain? ¿Hospitals do not require maintenance? All those things are paid by all of us with taxes. The wrong picture of healthcare being "free" or cheap in Spain comes from the fact that the state takes half of the salary of everyone even before that salary reaches the worker, complemented with all the rest of different taxes (over 100!) that the state uses to squeeze us. So no, services like healthcare or education are not free or cheap in Spain, we are just forced to use the ones that the policians decide. They took away our freedom to choose.
Also, you seem to mix up "public" with "universal". A service guaranteed to everyone is an "universal" service. A "public" service is just a service controlled by politicians. And this is why private healthcare or private education are always better than public ones. Because private services are managed by professionals of that sector, but public services are managed by politicians, wich are usually corrupt, inept, and they only care about themselves. But it is totally possible to have private universal healthcare, or private universal education (like in the nordic countries). We don´t benefit from having public services, the only beneficiaries from services being public are the politicians, as they use this power for their political goals.
And you should learn a little history. The public health system in Spain exists since 1908, so no, we don´t have it thanks to socialists. That is another lie coming from the PSOE, like when they say that they "invented feminism" (yes, they said that).

@gabrielanaya677 I know that. And Spain has an open border too. As an American, you could just come in on a holiday visa and stay there. The issue is then being illegal, which nobody would want. My point was the *legal* methods of gaining a work visa are easier USA->Spain than in the opposite direction

Barry thank you for your comment. I guess when you immigrate you learn a lot in the process and when you find something you like, you want to share it. At the end of the day everyone has to eat right? But by doing the things you love and sharing and helping others, work does not feel like work. And most people outsource video editing etc.
