Whitaker is not in the HOF because he failed to get the vote of 5 percent of the voters when he first became eligible to be voted on by the BBWAA in 2001. Under the rules of the time, which still exist, he was dropped from the ballot for future years. In the 2001 voting Dave Winfield and Kirby Puckett were elected by receiving 84.5 percent and 82.1 percent of the vote, respectively. Future inductees like Gary Carter, Jim Rice, Bruce Sutter, and Rich Gossage fell short of the requisite 75 percent vote. Maybe in the future he may elected by one of the era committees that meet every few years. Whitaker's WAR is much greater than that of Harold Baines and Baines got elected with the help of Jerry Reinsdorf and Tony LaRussa who knew Baines well from their Chicago days. Maybe Whitaker can be voted on by a committee comprised of Detroit teammates Jack Morris and double play partner Allan Trammell.
I've advocated for years that all Hall Of Fame's should stop using beauty contest votes for election and go to a system similar to the Ladies PGA. Once you win a certain number of tournaments you are in the HOF, even if you are an active player. Baseball could use a system of stats that once you have achieved a set of stats equal to or greater than say, 66% of players in your position already in the Hall of Fame you are then a member. Take the value judgement out of it. The biggest problem for Lou is that he played in Detroit and never waved his own flag. In fact, once the game was over he pretty much just wanted to be a regular citizen and not play the game with reporters. Lou was not a colorful player. Just a REALLY good one.
Trammel had almost the same stats and got into the HoF fast. The problem with Whittaker was he didn't enamore himself with the media and journalists. To be honest wasnt all that liked.
