This is a great series of videos. I only have one tiny suggestion. If the presenter could state what notable players were still available when each bust was chosen, that would be awesome. He does it every once in a while, but not on every bust. Overall, great series.
Worth noting that Matt Bush was also a money-saving pick. Verlander was far and away the top prospect, but the Padres didn't want to pay what he was asking
I remember Bush....man, when I read that Trevor Hoffman had to buy Bush a watch because he was late to every spring training game, I knew Bush was gonna be a bust. Good thing Bush cleaned up and a century later Bush was a solid MLB player
Yeah, the Orioles front office simply sat on the turd throne and did their business for 14 long, frustrating and forgettable years. Stupid me, I went to their games, expecting them to pull off a win. I'm really happy, now, with Elias and his crew. The metrics approach allows them to avoid picking players like this list. The only game I believe they won with me in attendance was against Texas. My dad grew up in the NYC area. So, I did get tickets a few years in a row to see the Yanks and Orioles. The Yanks beat the Birds 3 of the 4 times we went. Overall fun.
I watched a game where Billy Rowell was playing 3rd base at Delmarva. He had a hot shot hit to him. The ball rolls off him into foul territory. He takes his time to get the ball. The Smart base runner made it to 2nd base easily. I taught my boys never give up.
Great List! Really shows how hard it is to get to the majors. Just because you’re a high pick nothing is guaranteed. I think most of it has to do with how it is moving from high school as an 18 yr old to competing with people 20-22 yrs olds in rookie league. Look at all the great talent coming out of college now! Hopefully young players take notice.
The fact that other than Stodolka no other Royals made this list when their Top 10 Picks of that Decade included Stodolka, Colt Griffin, and Chris Lubanski makes this a Bust Video in and of itself lol
I love these videos, but you're right. He tends to have mostly players who made the bigs and didn't perform well while there are plenty of top 10 picks from any decade who never even made the bigs (such as your examples of Griffin and Lubanski here).
I immediately knew Colt Griffin had to be on this list based on how much hope KC had for the next Roger Clemens (who never advanced beyond AA. Was quite shocked to see Stodolka instead (and admittedly had TOTALLY forgotten about Lubanski).
The Orioles had too many. Rowell, Wade Townsend, Matt Hobgood. The 2000s Orioles could not produce pitchers, outside of Erik Bedard. The MiL trainers and pitching coaches messed with the pitchers and they just couldn't produce. That's why Jake Arrieta came alive for the Cubs. They let him go back to how he pitched in college.
Townsend was never an Oriole. Although he was drafted in the first round he never signed. Unfortunately the rules were different back then. As compensation for not signing him, the O's got a pick at the end of the supplemental first round (#48 overall). Under current rules they would have received the 9th pick, although that front office would likely have whiffed on that pick too as an awful lot of nothing was drafted after Tulowitski at #7.
Yeah the whole Orioles shit show was in rare form back then. I think he even complained that Buck Showalter messed with his windup to cut down on time to the plate to help stop stealing. He was obsessed with this. To the point of ruining a guy.
I just found out while I was a bust after high school. watching the 4 deep bull pen, I had a panic attack. Shanks was my nick name as my pops told me I could not hit dirt if I passed out.
You missed out on using Kyle Skipworth in this video. He was picked right after Buster Posey. Gatorade National player of the year too, nasty high school stats, etc.
7:39 - Brazelton doesn’t look like a “can’t miss prospect.” He looks more like the principal of a high school, someone you submit a loan proposal to or an H&R Block specialist.
How do you make it to the big leagues, post a sub 3 ERA and then never make it back again? So with a 2.96 ERA that wasn't good enough as a left-handed reliever to get a job somewhere in the bigs? Sometimes I wonder what these general managers and scouts are looking for and it just seems weird that certain guys have to beg for a job when they just get people out. That's the name of the game, probably because moneyball and analytics have ruined the eyeball test. Who knows but that guy needed a better agent if he couldn't get back on a roster after posting a 2.96 E RA in his rookie year.
Rowell and Hobgood are the perfect examples of the O's being incapable of developing any young players for the longest time. So many prospects during that era were wasted there.
Rowell also reportedly suffered from a massive ego problem, as it was stated repeatedly that he was uncoachable. Hobgood was a reach, a money saving pick and everyone knew it. It has often been suspected that he was injured before the draft as he never threw as hard as a professional as he did as a high schooler.
Crazy the difference between college and AAA. and then AAA and majors. Bet it was hard for a lot of these guys to be so close . Top ten mlb picks and some never called up. Wild
As a Pirates fan, I think they took Moskos as a guy who could reach the major leagues quickly and contribute right away and be cheap to boot. Of course it didn’t work out that way and Littlefield was out the door soon afterwards. As for Bullington, I remember reading the P-G article about him the day after the draft and the Pirates scouting director said he’d probably be a #3 pitcher some day. The Pirates took starting pitchers in the first round 5 years in a row from 1998-2002. Clint Johnston, Bobby Bradley, Sean Burnett, John VanBenschoten and Bryan Bullington. Sean Burnett was the only one who had a major league career. As a relief pitcher. In 2003, they took Paul Maholm and he had a real major league career as a starter. In 2004 and 2005 they took position players and it only turned in to Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen. You’d think they would have learned their lesson and stuck with position players, but nope. Brad Lincoln in 2006 and Daniel Moskos jn 2007 got them going back to drafting pitchers who didn’t do much of anything in the majors. Gerrit Cole was the first legit first round starting pitcher they ever took. And they misused him, never letting him pitch to his strengths and he left on a terrible trade and he took off with real organizations, the Astros and Yankees.
I remember when my O's picked Billy Rowell and Matt Hobgood, Rowell was really hyped up on the next Orioles game broadcast and if I am not mistaken they brought Hobgood up to the booth during the next Orioles TV game.
My top 3 as a Braves fan wouldn't make your list, but just based on hype alone, I'd go Melvin Nieves, Cristian Pache & Joey Devine. Kinda ruined the last one ourselves, but those others were billed as can't miss, and despite making it, definitely didn't materialize into what they were once billed as.
This…. Not saying it’s right as it really isn’t. We as a society should judge people equal not if their repentant or unrepentant or a complete a hole. But, this is human society we are talking about with human flaws and rarely do we get anything right in actuality. Hell, look at Aroldis Chapman, he gets accused of despicable things but he wins a title for my cubbies yet all is forgiven? Yeah Nuh uh, we must differentiate between the player we love or the player we love to hate and the actual person who may turn out to be a giant d bag or a genuine misunderstood good human being.
If I were looking for a high ranking prospect, I'd never pick a pitcher. Guys like Chris Smith are just one bad pitch or bad piece of advice from a career-ending injury. It's no coincidence that a more of these busts are pitchers than any other position, but I'm surprised you actually had a even amount between position players and pitchers.
That’s a chance you have to take as a general manager. Pitching is the most crucial aspect of a team if you want to make the playoffs and have a deep run. I understand pitching is riskier but any player on the field could have a career ending injury
He wasn't with them after the trade last year and that's like saying Bob Wickman was the main reason the Yankees won in 1996. Plus the guy is still a bust, he was expected to be more than just a serviceable reliever.
I went to high-school with Matt Bush once he became famous had a huge ego me and my friends would see him alot driving around with his friend would try and say whats up totally ignored us after he was drafted by the padres I knew it was a bad selection for the organization
Wow i rember hodgood coming out of norco Hs. It was supposed to be him and D bundy if im not mistaken as the future for the orioles back in the day. Who can forget bush. He had a special arm and thrre heeeaat! 🔥🔥🔥
Haven't watched yet...but if John Van Benschoten and Bryan Bullington aren't on here, I don't know what kind of list this is... EDIT: First guy is Daniel Moskos! I would have mentioned him but I thought he was drafted in 2010. Damn.
They should take away the metal bats in College, it gives false info to teams. The only other option is to implement them into the MLB systems which they will never do. Then they need to drop these "signing bonuses" in every sport for rookies. What you did in HS and College means nothing anymore. You are facing the top players in the sport so prove you belong and get your bonus after completing your first contract, it should be that way in every sport. We've seen way to many busts who never live up to the hype and never make it or do the bare minimum. Bonuses should be for the accomplished not the hopeful.
I hate the whole ERA is pure luck FIP says how good a pitcher was garbage is. If a guy has an ERA under 3 I don't understand how you don't ever get another shot man that's some bullshit.
I hit .247 in little league with 2 bombs. I was highly touted as a great participant.
Great video as always. Notice how Vitters got his first hit and RBI against the Padres. As a Padres fan, we have seen so much of that
I kind of want to start a Bowman Chrome 1st card collection based on your bust videos
Your a fellow collector I love topps chrome and bowman chrome autos
You can probably find these guys inside the Walgreens Baseball Collector's Edge Mystery Boxes
Dude I love your videos Much respect for the work put into these
You guys forgot Matt Riley of the Baltimore Orioles.
This is a great series of videos. I only have one tiny suggestion. If the presenter could state what notable players were still available when each bust was chosen, that would be awesome. He does it every once in a while, but not on every bust. Overall, great series.

Came here to say exact same thing.
I remember Bush....man, when I read that Trevor Hoffman had to buy Bush a watch because he was late to every spring training game, I knew Bush was gonna be a bust. Good thing Bush cleaned up and a century later Bush was a solid MLB player

What a stroll down memory lane this video was haha. Can't believe it's 2024 and I'm thinking about Billy Rowell lol
I watched a game where Billy Rowell was playing 3rd base at Delmarva. He had a hot shot hit to him. The ball rolls off him into foul territory. He takes his time to get the ball. The Smart base runner made it to 2nd base easily. I taught my boys never give up.
Another great video!
Thanks!!
As always another great video here Eric.

Love the channel
Also, for the Pirates, they were about signability.
The fact that other than Stodolka no other Royals made this list when their Top 10 Picks of that Decade included Stodolka, Colt Griffin, and Chris Lubanski makes this a Bust Video in and of itself lol

Pirates drafting in the early 2000s was insanely bad. Trying to save money also got them Bryan Bullington.

The Mariners GM Bill Bavasi that drafted Jeff Clement along with other bad draft picks & bad trades set the franchise back 10 years.
Dustin Ackley
!@aunch3 Ackley was a second overall pick...He definately belongs on this list!!!@@aunch3
I just found out while I was a bust after high school. watching the 4 deep bull pen, I had a panic attack. Shanks was my nick name as my pops told me I could not hit dirt if I passed out.

The Orioles tanked on alot of these Draft Prospects...oh my, how the tables have turned as of late.
7:39 - Brazelton doesn’t look like a “can’t miss prospect.” He looks more like the principal of a high school, someone you submit a loan proposal to or an H&R Block specialist.
Surprised to see Wade Townsend exempted. Top-10 pick twice, now a professional poker player.

Rowell and Hobgood are the perfect examples of the O's being incapable of developing any young players for the longest time. So many prospects during that era were wasted there.
The two-headed monster of Beatty and Flanagan were no good at drafting.

Langston milledge should make one of these list. He was supposed to be the next big thing for the Mets in the early 00 and never panned out
I remember when my O's picked Billy Rowell and Matt Hobgood, Rowell was really hyped up on the next Orioles game broadcast and if I am not mistaken they brought Hobgood up to the booth during the next Orioles TV game.
This could have been a video just about Baltimore.

Kinda ruined the last one ourselves, but those others were billed as can't miss, and despite making it, definitely didn't materialize into what they were once billed as.
Luis Montanez, I had no idea the Cubs drafted him, I thought he was a lifetime Oriole.
Oh Mariners. 😆
So Matt Bush was forgiven after getting out of prison but Trevor Bauer was never found guilty and MLB releases him?
Different era. And no way Bauer will humble himself the way that Bush did, clawing his way through the minors to earn a spot after prison.
It's ridiculous, you're right.
It’s a lot easier to be forgiven when you’re not a complete douche bag
@@camdavis6433yeah drunk drivers are really kind people. 🤡

Matt Bush got a WS ring 💪
Oh my how things can thankfully change. The old Orioles front office to the current Orioles front office…the exact opposite!
Matt Bush isn’t a bust. He’s been a big part of Texas first ever championship
How? He was with the Brewers the last few years
For a number 1 overall pick...
Anyone can be lucky enough to be part of a roster and still be a bust
stretching to say he was a big part of it
He wasn't with them after the trade last year and that's like saying Bob Wickman was the main reason the Yankees won in 1996. Plus the guy is still a bust, he was expected to be more than just a serviceable reliever.
Damn, another name that I havent heard in a while.. Luis Montenez... He also had beckett value when I collected cards back in 2000.
Damn the Orioles did Chris Smith dirty.
Whaaaat? My Pirates? Bad drafts? Bad trades? Money based roster decisions?
Top SF Giants Draft Bust: Joey Fart
I have some sort of false memory of Dewon Brazleton being good. LOL
I went to high-school with Matt Bush once he became famous had a huge ego me and my friends would see him alot driving around with his friend would try and say whats up totally ignored us after he was drafted by the padres I knew it was a bad selection for the organization
Lmao, that sounds like a complete lie. You also clearly didn’t learn anything about grammar in school.
Wow i rember hodgood coming out of norco Hs. It was supposed to be him and D bundy if im not mistaken as the future for the orioles back in the day.
Who can forget bush. He had a special arm and thrre heeeaat! 🔥🔥🔥
Chris Lubanski 5th overall 2003. Adam Jones was drafted later in the first round, but Lubanski was AWFUL.
You left Matt Harrington witch he was draft 5 times 2000 1rd-7 overall
Damn! The city of San Diego have NO luck when it comes to drafting! 1st the Chargers with Ryan Leaf! And now the Padres with Donavan Tate! 🤷♂🤦♂
It's rough being a Padres fan
Yup
Pitching is a HUGE gamble.
You guys forgot gunnar henderson... that dude man.. 😕
My poor orioles but aye the Os learned from there mistakes look at them now orioles have tha best damn player farm system in the MLB!
Padres also traded their 2018 #7 pick Ryan weathers bc he can’t put it together..
Haven't watched yet...but if John Van Benschoten and Bryan Bullington aren't on here, I don't know what kind of list this is...
EDIT: First guy is Daniel Moskos! I would have mentioned him but I thought he was drafted in 2010. Damn.
Never heard of Montanez. Hmmm.
Brandon Wood would be high on my list
Was Matt Bush the only one that went to prison?
If the Padres had the ownership like Seidler instead of what they had back then, I bet they had taken Verlander over Bush
As a Padres fan, we were screaming at them to bite the bullet, deal with Scott Boras, and draft JV.
Everyone knew he was going to be a stud.
I was sure I'd see Ike Davis on here
Padres took Donovan Tate over Mike Trout...oh the pain, the pain.
Tate played for the Fort Wayne Tincaps. I saw him several times. The crowds, who love that team, never liked him.
Ngl I'm glad the Cubs weren't on here more
Donovan Tate got a lot of his injuries when he crashed an ATV.

#freebauer
Josh Vitters was such a bum. I'm glad Kris Bryant ended up not being the same type of failure.
Luke Hochevar. Former Guardians batting practice dummy. He shouldn’t get a pass for winning a WS. Nearly a 5 ERA as a 1st overall pick in 2006
You forgot Bo Gentry
Who are these fools?
Alot of pitchers on this list
Luke Hegarty comes to mind
Clint everts should've been on this list
John Van Benschoten
Top 10 bust Colorado Rockies the whole team
Brandon Wood
So weird to see all these former high school players who could hit and pitch. These days all of them would be two-way players like Ohtani.
Why are you posting failures , are failures your thing ?
That doesn’t even make sense
If the Pirates pick you, you know you are screwed
Yeah, Cutch had a terrible career. Oh.
@@AyeThatsHandsomePete Good point. Let me fix that. If the pirates pick you, you know there is a 99% chance you are screwed.
