Give us an update! I’m 32 and got called out today after I bombed a bus lane. He didn’t see that, and not important whatsoever. What is important that I was sweaty, and out of breath. Who is the poser? Fuck everyone. Skateboarding has an about free expression. Jee I’m a freestyle skateboarder that likes to dibble dabble in vert these days
I'm a lawyer, and I'm 37. Sometimes I go to court to hand in documents and things like that, so I don't need to suit up. I take either my DB Longboards Mini Cruiser, or my 22" Penny, just because I like parking farther and not paying for a spot. I skateboard to Court. Inside, I mallgrab mostly to occupy the least space possible inside elevators and standing in line, because I already feel self conscious about the looks and comments, although I like the personal space that standing in line with one foot on the board gives me. But the mallgrab to me is a sort of social shrinking mechanism, where I should just be taking up fucking space and fuck whoever minds. But yea, it's more comfortable sometimes. Skate what you got, and grab it however you want to.
Same. I tend to mall grab when carrying my board for a long time because as someone on the autism spectrum with sensory sensitivity’s, I hate the feeling of the grip tape on my fingers for a long period of time
I’m not a skater. Haven’t even been on a board but the thought or idea that grabbing a board by its truck makes you a poser is the dumbest thing I ever heard of.
I carry my skateboard at school and I don’t wanna hit anyone with my skateboard while I walk in the crowded hallways. So I just use the mall grab. I’ve never been called a poser or anything but it’s still a fear of mine since I just recently started skating. I find it dumb that people can’t tell the difference between a poser and someone who’s learning. It just makes me scared to go to places like skateparks and stuff. I’m terrified of being judged.
And two years later you still mall grab right? I skate on and off for 20 years and I mall grab whenever the fuck it is convenient Which is actually quite often
Dude, you're the one who made a video about it. Shouldn't have done that in the first place. Every normal skater doesn't care. You just seem so childish through this video. Sry but I can't take it seriously.
I hold my board this way, and when I went to the skatepark couple of people were laughing at me and pointing whenever I grabbed my board. But I'm actually one of the best skaters at that skatepark and after they saw me shred the park they didn't say anything lol. Later on I find this video and now know why that happened
Bruh, the argument that its hard to throw your board down into a ride from mall grab is stupid, because, get this: Its even harder to do it from the side grab hold.

One of the funniest videos about skating culture I've watched in a while. :D Thanks for making it. I'm over 50 and, like you, couldn't care less what people think about how I hold my board. I'm way past calling people poseurs and worrying about whether or not I look cool enough. I just want to skate, get better at my tricks, and minimize how much damage I do to myself. If it's not about the joy of being on my board and getting better, who cares?
I've recently picked up skateboarding as a 14 y/o girl and I find that mall grabbing is just easier for me... sorry if that throws off other skaters and it if somehow affects their skating lol Plus I learned my first 2 tricks today :)
Chewy Wolf + Geo M.C. I'm a fourteen year old girl and I just got my first board yesterday after watching skating for years. My friend told me I shouldn't mall grab and that made me a poser and it really put me down. Not gonna let it ruin my happiness though. I'm still super motivated to get better.
TBH I mall grab when I go on walks with my wife just in case I see something I want to skate. Also I live in an urban area with lots of traffic and rough roads. I never thought people had debates over this because I don't care if you've skated a decade or a day or are "posing." The only thing lamer than being a poser is accusing people of posing. Who cares its your life! Edit: I don't think anyone who gets on a board can or should be considered a poser regardless of their skill level. We include, not divide. Peace.
I saw in a tiktok that the best way to hold the board is that way (mallgrab) and I've been doing that ever since and it's the most comfortable for me and it's really annoying that people hate on that because of something that happened forever ago
I always thought it was called the mall grab because holding it that way would reduce the chance of hitting someone in a crowded area (like the mall). It was more of a consideration to others than a fashion statement for me. I've accidentally hit some kids in the head before on a train holding it the "cool" way so mall grabbing made more sense.
Jeremiah Castro yeah exactly, like you can only grab something so tightly with two fingers and in the mall you wanna avoid dropping your board. So it's a term for a move, just like how everything has a proffered term in skateboarding, some with derivative sounding meanings, fake / sex change. Some people understand the slang as applying differently or don't know the true meaning, or other people who do know the meaning and want to apply it or others still who have a certain expectation and desire to shame those who don't skate in the same fashion. I agree that basically a skater is someone who skates, but like anything else with humans, has to relate to fashion and lifestyle, and behavior in general.
It's called a mall grab because kids would hang out at the mall holding it like that instead of actually skating on the damn thing. The whole reason people get made fun of for it is because they're holding the board instead of skating on it. Just skate and don't worry about what others think.
How else were they supposed to get to the mall walk? I carry my board around the college campus all the time because the sheriffs employed as campus security are quick to catch you if you for a potential trespassing ticket, but without a car how do you think I get to class, or jack in the box from class?
I mostly just cruise and ollie to get from place to place and for fun, so i dont mind being called "not a real skater". And saying it's "gay" is pretty immature. Makes u think if theyre the posers.
I bet you'd love a longboard, they're made for cruising and having a smooth riding experience! I'm kinda hoping to have a normal board and a longboard someday soon.
Yeah me too, I live on the coast and surf so heaps of my mates skate too. I’m happy just cruising around on a longboard. I don’t worry myself with all the ‘you have to do this, you have to do that, you have to look like this’ bullshit. It’s just easier and fun to get around on and if people are that worried about the way you hold your board that’s their problem.
I'm new to skating and expected this to be a video explaining that one of the ways I hold my board was loosening or warping or doing some other bad thing to my trucks. Good to know that I can carry on doing whatever the crap I want.
one thing i should have mentioned in the video: don't get me wrong, I'm all for hating on posers, i just mean if you're a real skater you shouldn't worry about people making fun of the way you hold your board
I think caring too much about how you pick up your board is one of the most poser things you can do ^^. Like seriously, when someone goes out of their way to hold their board in a way that suposedly says I'm not a poser doesn't it make them that little bit more of a poser. Peeps should be all bam I'm gonna skate! not all hey how should I hold my board I want people to think I'm totally down with it
Exactly. Also there's a difference between a newbie and a poser. I'm a newbie. Only got a board recently at 28 years old, but I practice a couple hours a day after work and I'm getting better. Someone called me a poser for being a newbie, but in the end. I can do basic tricks and get to work on my board. I don't think that makes me a poser.
I carry it with the grip tape facing in, and hold the board near the back of the trucks so the trucks rest against my forearm. It's just how I naturally carried it back in the 90s when I started skating and just never found a reason to change lol
Lol back in the 90s we never carried a board walking by the trucks as that was a poser thing to do. It wasnt called mall grabbing back then. We just didnt like people who werent trying to skate, they just wanted the culture without trying to actually be apart of it. Funny how these things still going on today
that's how the early 90's were. everything became uber-trendy. you can only ride certain companies, certain boards, had to set 'em up a certain way...even had to dress a certain way. case in point...check out PLAN-B questionable video from '92....EVERY SINGLE PERSON was wearin' t-shirts 2 sizes too big, baggy pants cut into "high waters' & ridin' 39mm wheels. 39mm wheels?!...that's basically coated bearings. in the 80's you could ride & wear whatever you wanted & nobody cared.
Hahaha I just bought a skateboard and came to youtube to find a few tutorials for beginners and the whole way back I was holding my board like this half the time and I thought "oh shit am I ruining my boards trucks or something!?" Turns out people just are judgemental, nothing new. Thanks for the warning at least! 👍
Mall grabbing is the most ergonomic way to hold the board. Always held it that way since the beginning. If you worry about the way people see you holding your board , or worry about people thinking you are a poser, then that makes you … guess what? … a poser … because you are concerned with appearance over skating for enjoyment
I'm curious about what your reasons for disliking mall grabs are. Do you have any valid arguments that aren't just "mall grabbing is gay" or "mall grabbing is for posers"?
VLSkate dude I don't mall grab because I Mall grabbed in a live stream yesterday, and I was called a poser and gay by everyone watching. It really hurt my feelings and I quit the stream. I don't want that to happen again.
Another reason I like to mall grab is because I ride alot and the griptape starts to rub your fingers and hand, Which makes your skin sting and burn after a while.
Probably started out as a joke, but then some idiot didn't get the joke and started hating. Then the trend of hating spreads. Because we all know bad news spreads faster than good news haha. Well I could care less how anyone grabs their board. It's time people stop giving a shit about what other people think.
People EVERYWHERE need to learn the difference between a beginner and a poser. There will be different opinions on this, but as an example, people say posers just hold their board and don't actually skate. Thats true. But when I went to the skatepark the first time,I was super intimidated by everyone that knew what they were doing so I just practiced on flat ground for a while, also to avoid accidents like snakes. Saw a lot of scooter kids snake skaters and almost all fell down
I know this was posted 3 years ago but I wanted to say I just love how you don't care how one holds their skateboard. I also wanted to say mallgrabbing is the most comfortable way of holding my skateboard or I just hold it on my stomach in front of me.
When I was a kid, I used to carry my board by mall grabbing. Its such a handy little handle, and I managed to convert some of the better skaters I knew to it. In reality, people paying attention to people mall grabbing are the truest posers.
Yesterday I was hanging out with my friend in the street and we were practicing our ollies ( We are both beginner) and then some ''skaters'' walked beside us and kept starring at us like : '' Oh my god look at this guys , fucking posers ,...'' All the skateboarders that I know are kind and respectul After seeing them looking at us I was laughing but now I'm like What the fuck
Tetra they don't know the difference between a poser and a beginner , that's all. Usually the people who call other people posers are the ones who are posers themselves , honestly if you like to skate then you wouldn't care so much about having a skater persona. P.s. Mall grabbing is still lame as fuck , don't do it.
Tetra yup, one reason I stuck with bikes, if somebody annoys you, you can simply ride away, and also, I am shit at skating :P no offense to those that skate
i personally never even new about mall grabbing and there is a name on how to carry your board? i hold my board whatever way feels comfortable at the time and never think about it, sure i was so tired from skateboarding the other day so instead of so called MALL GRABBING i put my board in both hands turned it around and rested it on my neck between both trucks to reduce the weight of holding it in one hand. it help a lot and didnt care to think what anybody thought because it came natural to me. so if anyone out there is skating and cares what people or other skaters think ditch that fear and i guarantee you will be free skateboarding. NOTE THIS if you want to detect a poser just say give me a look at your board and check for grind marks on the trucks and paint work tore off the graphics or just say show me a trick bro . great video vl skate thanks
The issue is: why carry around your board? Skate on it. Also, some people wear their board out by rubbing it on stuff to fake actually having used it. Also not everyone is in to grinding. It's all ridiculous, just skate and don't worry about everyone else.
I have a longboard where there is NO deck space to grab in front of the truck, so yeah, I hold it by the side, or by the front trucks, that and it’s a 41” and it is relatively heavy
Arthur it's true. i kinda mentioned it in the video. skaters say we're all a tight knit community, but skateboarding has some of the worst elitist in it
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I needed this vid because when I started skating people kept getting mad at me. Besides the mall grab is so much more easier and convenient
I'm just here randomly, but I totally support your rational wise thinking, leaving people do what do the way they want without giving a shitty elitist counter argument about why what you do and that "well you should do it that way,". Who cares if it works? as we say "if it looks stupid but works, it ain't stupid"
My only suggestion would be to you should have own your opinion more. I completely agree with you. Basically: What does it's f****** matter how you hold your goddamn board?!
I don't think I got my point across in this video clearly. I'm not saying that there aren't reasons not to mall grab. I hope Tony Hawk post video of himself carrying the skateboard by mallgrabbing. Then all those stupid guys will just shut up.
People who complain about mall grabbers are clearly the posers because it matters to them how a board is grabbed, a proper skater is all about the skating.
For me, my dad skated in the 80s. I’m 20 and just started learning how to skate. Picking up my board by the nose is ripping up the skin on my thumbs, and I’m a professional artist so I can’t really have drawing being uncomfortable for me, so most of the time I do pick the board up by the trucks. I don’t want bloody thumbs! 🤣 Anyway dad said it was fine so I’ll just tell them my dad said it was cool. 😂
If the grip tape is hurting ur thumbs i dont think u have what it takes to be a skater. Concrete covered in glass hurts way worse
@@10oner Why is that your takeaway from what they said? Point is meant to be whatever is most comfortable and convenient. Stop gatekeeping skateboarding.

It's hard to make fun of them when they're a lot better than you though. There is so much ego in skating, I definitely don't miss that part of it
that's how the early 90's were. everything became uber-trendy. you can only ride certain companies, certain boards, had to set 'em up a certain way...even had to dress a certain way. case in point...check out PLAN-B questionable video from '92....EVERY SINGLE PERSON was wearin' t-shirts 2 sizes too big, baggy pants cut into "high waters' & ridin' 39mm wheels. 39mm wheels?!...that's basically coated bearings. in the 80's you could ride & wear whatever you wanted & nobody cared.

Turns out people just are judgemental, nothing new.

When I was a kid, I used to carry my board by mall grabbing. Its such a handy little handle, and I managed to convert some of the better skaters I knew to it. In reality, people paying attention to people mall grabbing are the truest posers.
Yesterday I was hanging out with my friend in the street and we were practicing our ollies ( We are both beginner) and then some ''skaters'' walked beside us and kept starring at us like : '' Oh my god look at this guys , fucking posers ,...''
All the skateboarders that I know are kind and respectul
After seeing them looking at us I was laughing but now I'm like What the fuck
Tetra people treat others how they feel about themselves.
Tetra if u think skaters are nice than try riding a scooter 😂😉
Tetra hey nice name
Tetra yup, one reason I stuck with bikes, if somebody annoys you, you can simply ride away, and also, I am shit at skating :P no offense to those that skate
At this point I do it just to spite the jerkoffs who want to belittle people. They care more about image than if someone can skate or not
i personally never even new about mall grabbing and there is a name on how to carry your board? i hold my board whatever way feels comfortable at the time and never think about it, sure i was so tired from skateboarding the other day so instead of so called MALL GRABBING i put my board in both hands turned it around and rested it on my neck between both trucks to reduce the weight of holding it in one hand. it help a lot and didnt care to think what anybody thought because it came natural to me. so if anyone out there is skating and cares what people or other skaters think ditch that fear and i guarantee you will be free skateboarding.
I have a longboard where there is NO deck space to grab in front of the truck, so yeah, I hold it by the side, or by the front trucks, that and it’s a 41” and it is relatively heavy
you’re wholesome, and i love you.
People worry way too much about fashion in skateboarding. That's a big reason why I don't really miss it. The community is the worst.
Arthur it's true. i kinda mentioned it in the video. skaters say we're all a tight knit community, but skateboarding has some of the worst elitist in it

I'm just here randomly, but I totally support your rational wise thinking, leaving people do what do the way they want without giving a shitty elitist counter argument about why what you do and that "well you should do it that way,".
