- Many fish keeper are not aware of the hidden benefits of this great rock. Denitrifying bacteria that is contained in lava rock will help remove NITRATES in that water. Lava rock has tiny holes that let water pass through and air nitrifying bacteria will consume a lot of nitrate that is in your tank water, which will save your fish.

We love our lava rocks....we actually use them as substrate in our 220....the fish love em too....always digging around and moving them because they are light and easy to move....we rarely do water changes on this tank either due to how amazingly they hold so much microbiome....great video Tommy....

I used about 2" of lava rock (about 1 inch pieces) under 2" small gravel with ugf and hob in my 29 gal planted tank with 6 black neon tetras, 6 rasporas, 2 oto cats, 2 bolivain rams, 2 mollies, 3 nerite snails and some controlled bladder snails, one bamboo shrimp. After 8 weeks, amonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates about 25. It seems to consistently stay this way with 2, 4 gal water changes per week. Im going to cut water changes to once per week and see if perameters stay the same. I just added a co2 set up, but am keeping very small dose for now because of snails and shrimp.

Are lava rock more effective in removing nitrates when placed in a slow moving current environment like a sump rather than a high flow canister filter?
these one you are looking at in my tank .but if in canister or sump it should be fine . all my tank read fine and with over 700 fish in 6 tanks so far so good thank-you for watching Under The Bus.

There is a limit of lava rock amount per aquarium gallons in a sump?
I have a 55 gallon tank with a sump that I added a lot of lava rock, I just learned that having too low levels of nitrates can produce hydrogen-sulfide... very toxic gas.
Any recommendations??
Thanks i use little lava rock in my filters i keep 90 percent of lava rock in my tank and it keeps evey running at 100 percent red lava rock seem to be the best at this i hope this helps

Dear sir i hv 90 gal cichlid tank, i brought lava rock stones after washing them i put them 20 min in boiled water then kept
out side to be cool properly then placed in my tank sump but after 3 or 4 days my fishes start rubbing their gills then i took out
rocks and fishes became normal. Plz can u tell me what could be issue. I want to add lava rocks to remove Nitrate.
put them in pail of water for a week and where did you get them .

Lisa it should not but put the lava rock in boiling in a pail leave for 3 days and rinse it well then put in your tank .

How do you clean those white sand? Do you use gravel cleaner only? How often do you clean?
I don't clean the white sand the fish do it.

@@saikatghosh521 The tank is full of cichlid fish they pick up the sand and spit it out of there mouth that is why the sand is clean.
