    Really enjoyed that. Howard is just Howard and I got the feeling Phil knew what he was letting himself in for. He took it in his stride when (understandably) many others would have been exasperated by Howard's patter. Stern reminds of the very naughty schoolboy you begin by being pissed of with but cannot end up but liking in the end. Robyn is great here too. She's the one who gets Howard when no one else can. Very impressed by Phil's musicianship down the years. One of the best drummers ever. And major cudos to him for mentioning Paul Brady (and John Martyin of course). Great musicians know other great musicians when the hear them.

      @roger adams Sterotyping a nation of people is an uneducated exercise in simplistic thought. There are always people attracted to the crass shock entertainer like Stern, but they are in the minority. I have never been able to stand him. I would never attempt to claim that I know who you are by judging you by the use of the word retard, which is no longer acceptable in America except in circles of crass individusls like Stern. Let's just say we both have our embarrassing element; ours most certainly on full display during the last four years. Don't judge all by the one, or what you see on TV.

    I’ve been a major fan of Phil’s since the early 80’s and seen him live 3 times over the decades. Such a terrific performer and an all around good guy. I also thought I had seen and heard everything he’s done but I’ve actually never seen this before. And although there are a few cringy moments (Howard being obsessed with Phil’s love life) this was a mostly enjoyable interview. Especially enjoyed the unplugged versions of Phil’s hits.

    • @coolcat6303
      @coolcat6303 2 роки тому +1

      @1RonBurgundy1 Yeah he definitely got unfairly bashed by some music snobs. But Phil is no fraud. He just knew what the masses wanted to hear and wasn’t afraid to give them what they wanted. I personally think that the 80’s were his most exciting and productive period. And once the 90’s came, Phil actually did experiment with some different styles and even did a Big Band album. But he was never a critics darling like Gabriel was or considered cool by the general Rock/Pop audience. But that’s a common reaction to anyone who’s super successful, popular and not considered sexy or cool. Their loss though. Phil is a legend in my book.

      Such completely opposite personalities. This 'interview' was very revealing. Stern usually finished all his questions, making it all about himself. Collins came across as thoughtful, grounded, but with a sense of humor that, unlike Stern, was not sophomoric. "Truth is not interesting". Howard was desperate for something salacious.

      @@stevet7487 Precisely. Even attempting to finish a sentence was futile in this mostly, Stern monologue.
      As to Collin's answer saying that all the band's members wrote the songs, although technically correct, in reality, Gabriel wrote most of the band's songs, while the rest of the band composed most of its music. After all it was Gabriel's band from the beginning.
      In a group like Rush, for example, it was Neal Peart that would write all songs while Lee and Lifeson would compose the music.

      @@fatalconceit3362 Unfortunate that Howard decided to show off that day. So many questions, so few opportunities. This one blown. Being a huge Rush fan, seeing them in concert 40 times, I am keenly aware of the writing process in that band. I used to collect their interviews before the Internet arrived. But I wasn't aware of the division of duties in Genesis during Pete's time in Genesis. I had read where Steve and Mike had said they were all involved in the Lyrics of Foxtrot, but Peter insisted on writing all the lyrics for Supper's Ready. And I believe that was also true entirely on the Lamb. The guys were obviously bothered with the belief by fans that it was Pete's band and he wrote all the songs. In Rush, Alex and Geddy were happy to have Neil write the lyrics, and he was well suited and happy to do it. They agreed early on all members would get equal writing credits so no jealousies arose. One can only imagine the possibilities for Genesis creations if Pete and Steve had stayed in the band. I suppose we should just be grateful we got some amazing songs and enjoy them.

      @@stevet7487 I hear you. The creativity of the band was off the charts. Peter Gabriel's Genesis was before my time, but even their first album after his departure, And Then There Were Three, is an amazing work, interesting what it would be with Gabriel. Saw them in concert both in Toronto and in the US.
      Funny enough I grew up in Willowdale and went to the same Junior High as Geddy and Alex, years later. So Rush was close to our heart (no pun intended). Losing It is still my favorite song from them.

    I remember when this first aired. I was big into Genesis and Phil solo and this was the week's highlight for me! Unfortunately, Howard was a disrespectful chatterbox here, barely letting Phil get a Goddamned word in edgewise. I was like, "Howard, shut up with the juvenile questions for ONE MINUTE and just chat NORMALLY with the LIVING LEGEND you have in the studio there!" And even when he did, he just glossed over whatever Phil said to get to the next "Who are you banging?" question.
    Quivers was even worse---even on the radio I could tell that Phil was getting pissed off with her constant "What happened with your first/second marriage" questions she kept asking like a f@cking mentally challenged person. And she kept it up even after HOWARD realized he needed to chill. When they went to the first commercial, I felt like Howard went to Robin to tell her to cool it because she was being more annoying than he was!
    As others have said, Phil was a true gentleman (in the English style, of course) to put up with that idiocy for so long. No surprise that he never came back though.
