Car and Driver: "Another element common to these three models is a deployable spoiler, which resides just above the rear window. When the New Beetle made its debut, this device was programmed to pop up at 93 mph. This seemed a bit extreme to VW's U.S. marketing people, who finally got their colleagues in Germany to reduce deployment speed to make the spoiler visible in everyday traffic. But the compromise--40-mph deployment, 10-mph retraction--creates a problem. Deployments and retractions are audible, sounding like pieces falling off the car, and in urban traffic they're also frequent."
@@jonjonr6 When you're touring in Germany the normal "highway speed" (on the autobahns) is about 80 to 90 mph. I've been passed by women doing 200 kph (125 mph) with their little kids peering innocently out the rear side windows at me from their baby seats... it's slightly insane...

I have a 2003 turbo S! Little grey beetle and it's a fun ride for sure! Got it for 2,400$ everything is running beautiful. I've been able to repair most of the issues on it myself (and I am only 16) and have spent about 17 hours on paint from a clear bra that had cracked pretty bad from being in the sun. I've fixed the AC in it after realizing how hot it gets at 100° F in the summer and it's really nice now! Planning on keeping it and getting a newer paint job on it. It's my cute little race beetle!
I like how the Wizard gushed over the beetle. I also like how my small fleet has so much in common. I have a 2003 Jetta 1.8t AWP manual wagon. I feel like it’s my red headed step child. It’s been totaled, rebuilt, flooded, and I backed into it twice with my Land Cruiser. It still is nimble, quick and fun with a fair share of complements despite the dents.

For a VW of it's age, you get to do every bushing in the suspension (it's easier to do them all) and you may want to go to a company like Eibach and get a small lowering kit (they have a nice one at about 1 inch, if I remember correctly). Wheels and tires, and you have yourself an amazing runner that will make you smile every day.
Wish I had the 6 speed manual! I, instead, got another rare one: a 2001 isotope green 1.8t 5 speed for $600. After some repairs (new timing belt, water pump, timing chain hydraulic tensioner [it has a separate variable timing chain for the cams], serpentine belt, oil pressure sensor, coolant sensors, wheel bearings, shocks and brakes, flywheel and clutch plate) it is actually very fun to drive! It literally gets a lot of attention now even for being an "old new beetle". These are really fun cars and with proper maintenance, they can last forever
@@rogeliohernandez6440 Sort of. At the time, it was based off of the Audi TT. Same engine, same turbo, same 6 speed transmission, same front suspension, same internal styling. I had a 2003 Turbo Beetle that was lime green and had the lifestyle package that had the body color two tone leather seats, body color wheel inserts, body color dash panels and green leather stitching. Was a great little car, fast as all hell.

I actually owned a 2003 Turbo S. I bought it in 2004. I originally bought it because my commute to work increased to 130 miles/day . The car had a great stereo to make the time during the commute fly by. My car had a Monsoon Stereo. That car was fast, I actually had the speedometer pegged. At launch that car had massive torque steer. The car got me a few speeding tickets, so in 2006 I traded it in for a Honda Element. I kept that car until I had to adjust the solid lifters every 30k miles. Four years ago my commute to work got short and sweet.. Only 36 miles round trip, so I bought a Jeep Wrangler. That's got to my favorite vehicle so far. It reminds me of a toy I had as a kid.. It's the only vehicle that you can take the doors and roof off and still be legal.
Had to have the Turbo S. Most of them are totally roached out by now. This one is easily able to be saved.

I knew wizard wouldn’t let it leave his garage 😂
i knew as soon as that beetle entered wizards lear it would be staying there
Robert Donovan Lair? Not yet, but I’m hoping to tonight! Lol

Laid, yes
" new beetles.... That came out in 1998" 😳..... I'm so old 🥺
Kudos Hoovie for letting go of that, great find! And congrats Car Wizard, love that little Beetle Turbo S as well, $1,000 is a steal for that, especially w/113k miles. Great video!
Those 1.8t engines are nice. Nice amount of power, a lot of aftermarket support and u can add 60 hp with some easy mods
I’m immediately invested in this beetle. Over to Wiz’s now...
SAME!!! lol
Easily one of my favorite uploads, love seeing the wizard all happy like that hahaha
Car Wizard: "I'll do the plugs for free if you let me test drive this bad boy"
This was probably my favorite car I've ever owned. Full exhaust and a chip had me running neck and neck with LS1s and the reactions were PRICELESS. I loved the styling, interior, open roominess, ease to work on, blah blah blah. What a great car.
He said “let’s go over some railroad tracks” was not expecting him to go over half a mile over tracks lol.
Tyler, please buy an Air-cooled beetle. They literally write their own material. Spend a month with one and I garuntee you will have content.
@Death trooper Oh you're so cool man, what do you drive? It's probably FWD, or an Xbox controller.
@@herbienbrian2 This one gave me a good laugh, thank you.
Obd1andDown damn he got a lil mad. 🤣
@@acrazyguy14 I've had about ten of these cars, and I lived out of one when I was 18. They are like the island in Cast Away for me, even though I don't have one now, they were my rock when times were hard, and it was hard to leave and go back to modern cars. Air-cooleds have become too expensive to maintain now, all the good used motors are gone. All we have is cheap Chinese reproduction garbage floating around Craiglist and offer up or turnkey engines for 5k.
@@herbienbrian2 lol, he prob lied his own comment too. Those classic Beetles are cool.
Yup. I bet if he unplugs the spoiler a lot of the noises will be gone.
They should have done highway speeds, like 55 or 60.
That is because American companies are all about form over function. It is only useful if they can advertise it as a selling feature to the average everyday driver that their car is sporty and fast because it looks and responds like a race car during normal driving.

Tyler.... When do we get to hear the story on the "Clown shoe" Z3 M?
Thought i had missed a video on it or something. Guess its not just me looking for an answer.
Bantam Excelsior I think he got it for his tv show.
I noted the same. He gave us a peek when he bought those last 5 or so cars, it was in the background a few months ago. That sly dog... NOW LETS SEE IT Tyler.
Didn't he make a video about two Z3 coupes about a year ago? Is this one of those two? I have been wondering too...
@@Gjesmeaner ... You're right! Hoovie did do a video on the "odd" Z3 M Coupe, but they were both silver and wasn't sure if one of them was his. Tyler may have finally bought his own and seeing as he created a video before, I can see why he didn't want to do one again. Although... it would be cool to see the what's wrong with the Z3 video... Just a thought Tyler!
I was so excited he finally got a older car again that wasn't some crazy exotic, something anybody could buy and then he immediately sells it
Nicholas Field you must be new here. He’s had a lot of cheap shitboxes.
That wasn't a sell .... That was a proclamation by the Wizard !
Never argue with your Wizard.
@@jacklb4152 no, been around for years. I miss way back when, when he would buy cars most people could. Like an old minivan or keep. Or some old shitbox Lincoln.
I honestly thought it was kind of shitty he laughed that someone would treat the car well and keep it in good condition because it’s a car “beneath” his normal luxury money pit. You can see the disconnect with the average guy there
I agree. I would prefer to see more slightly obscure but cheap hoopties.
"I'll trade you tickets." Hoovie almost pulled that trigger.
HIS EYES LIT UP LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
"Check engine light, kinda standard on Volkswagen products" 😂😂 I'm dead
I’ve had a 2015 Passat since new. 3 oil changes and one brake job later, 2020 no problems. No lights.
If our Passat was my car instead of my wife's, I'd replace all the emblems with check engine lights.
@@Rali272 you are a lucky one. People I know aren't so lucky 😂
I had a Turbo S the first year they came out, and traveled to RI to get one in Platinum Grey of which they only made 500 that year. Fantastic car, fast, comfortable, no issues. You got a real deal there.
I just bought my second one last week for 3k!
Definitely one of my favorite cars but I strictly drive VW, Mercedes or BMW!
Still peeping the Z3 Roadster in the back 😍💯 also, this is proof that a few hundred bucks can get you a decent vehicle in some cases.
😂😂 Wizard said "this sum a gun MIIIINE!" 😂😂 Awesome.
Tyler: talks about his cars
Me: still waiting BMW Z3 video
I have a feeling that car will be in the next Car Trek.
The one on the lift in the garage?
Had a 2000 bright yellow turbo. Total dream to drive. Handling was incredible. Almost like flying. Smooth and silent.
Amen on the Ford V-6! I had to remove my wife's intake to tune up her Taurus X. It took a while and I goofed up the Throttle body so I had to replace that and a new air filter. Now it runs much better.
Last time I was this early hoovie was still buying cars for his wife.
Shut up
Dude that's funny man.bro.
He is buyin them for his other wife. He knew his wizards nettle wasn’t doin great n knows he loves bettles so he knew where it would end up with his WORK wife lol
after the anchor baby no more cars needed
Take out “cars for” from your sentence and then you will be spot on.
I remember seeing this at Bob Howard - they wanted $4500 for it back in early March haha.
9:26 Half expecting to hear a TARDIS whooshing sound and seeing the car slowly disappear with that Doctor Who bumper sticker
For a VW of it's age, you get to do every bushing in the suspension (it's easier to do them all) and you may want to go to a company like Eibach and get a small lowering kit (they have a nice one at about 1 inch, if I remember correctly). Wheels and tires, and you have yourself an amazing runner that will make you smile every day.
that wizard guy back in my country (Rwanda) we call him MASO !
7:10 The interior is so filthy I'm wretching! I love the Wizard offering $1000 to fix all the problems on the car!
Throckmorton The Wizard is BUYING the car for $1000.
@@Ready72000 And THAT will fix all the problems...get it?
THAT gets you wretching? That is in the top 30% for cleanliness for the vehicles I end up working in. Especially family minivans.
Yep, knew the Wizard was bout ready to snatch it right when he saw it lol
The car Wizard is more excited than a Porcupine with a PineApple.
I recently bought a 2002 turbo s for $500 from a friend of my dad's and we have been restoring it as a family and its awesome.
Thanks for uploading during quarantine, exactly what I needed
Totally knew he was going to get the Wizard buy it, perfect timing! Good little video.
Your next vehicle: the cheapest ford f550 rollback tow truck
@Honda 250R Also, Wizard already has a tow truck,, and it's bigger than a 550 rollback. Hoovie buying a tow truck would be redundant.
@@Fozzymaple Would it though? I mean he clearly often needs one
Man the wizard is what keeps me watching these videos. He’s so chill. He was like a kid on Christmas playing with his new beetle.
Is anyone else really happy for the Wizard? He seemed in love!
Thanks for keeping me entertained Tyler!
That Porsche has scored bores, can tell immediately by the noise+ one exhaust letting smoke. Atleast 8k to fix or a new engine, R I P
certainly scored a lemon there haha
What’s the 8k fix ? New short block with nickies ?
I have a a bunch of vw & Audi's ❤em my 99 passat is basically an a4
Now I wanna find a turboS thx hoov
It wants to be a Porsche, but it's actually a Golf.
It's actually an Audi TT with a solid rear axle and a bigger body.
Isn’t that a Golf?
@@rogeliohernandez6440 Sort of. At the time, it was based off of the Audi TT. Same engine, same turbo, same 6 speed transmission, same front suspension, same internal styling. The only difference between the Turbo S and the TT was the body and the rear suspension. A year later, the GTI was finally given the same treatment.
... not sure , I bought a 2.0 for My gfs daughter , manual and I had a ball w it ... Low center of gravity and it was fun
@@seanm7349 I was gonna say awd would make it way fun but then again You may as well buy a TT
I had a 2003 Turbo Beetle that was lime green and had the lifestyle package that had the body color two tone leather seats, body color wheel inserts, body color dash panels and green leather stitching. Was a great little car, fast as all hell.
The Wizard should do a rebuild series on this, and bringing it back to its glory
Didn't realize the new VW Beetle had glory to go back to
Hoovie you had me beat, I bought a rare 2002 beetle turbo “snap orange concept” for 1000, thought it was the best deal
I thought the beetle was going to stop in the middle of the railroad and be driven over by a train.
You really got lucky man! You didn’t get run over by a train and you made $300!
Young Exotics coils and spark plugs were probably $300 all together. Odds are he broke even. But at least he got a video out of it.
I’ve never seen that many sets of railroad tracks in one crossing. I guess it’s Hoovie’s favorite rattle test.
A heartwarming tale of two men and a beetle :D
I appreciate compact cars like this, the unsung heroes of cramped city parking lots that you can squeeze between two out of line SUVs
Great hooptie. The 1.8 20V engine was developed with Yamaha. Beware for the plastic clips of the window regulators, they fail. Just like in every Golf 4 derivative.
Wizard loves these cars. Only the bug gets the Gold!!!
Imagine the caressing of the beetle The Wizard does when the lights are low. Yikes!
The front wheel drive beetles. No Hoovie don’t go to the dark side
4:15 regret.
Fwd is life
you mean 'wrong wheel drive' haha
Zac Larkby
That’s not life, it’s just existence.
A life is always oversteer.
Would be awesome as RWD
As a VW Beetle enthusiast, I absolutely adored my new beetle. I am in a 2019 Beetle Coupe now. But that Techno Blue New Beetle I had was a lifestyle game changer for me. It is so much fun to drive a car that people smile about. So great. Enjoy that Turbo S.
Or I should tell the Wizard to enjoy! LOL - I hope you get your for yourself! So much fun.
