    Very easy to work on engine. Keep up with oil changes because the balance shafts can sieze. Beware of oil burning because the oil control rings start to clog up with carbon. Replacing the tension rings with fixed waffle-style rings is the only fix. Also do the timing chain. I'm sure as a mechanic you know about this but the pre-2013 2nd gen EA888 engines have bad timing chain tensioners which could fail at any time should be upgraded to the new tensioner. All gen EA888 engines have timing chains which stretch every 100k miles. Replace them every 100k - 130k miles. Make sure the new chain is the upgraded one with staggered links. Should check it now at 122k (check camshaft phase adaptation value). Anything > -4.5 and the chain is stretching. Other than than that, its a great engine. Throw an APR stage 1 tune and you'll have fun!

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 2 роки тому +5

      These are the reasons why it is _not_ a great engine. Great engines aren't so poorly designed. In a market that was so saturated with much better alternatives, the EA888 is... not the best. If I had to rely on one it would be the 2.5 I5. Better yet, just get a cheaper turbocharged Volvo I5 from the 2000s which has no design flaws at all and is even easier to work on

    • @mydimeisup5103
      @mydimeisup5103 2 роки тому +2

      @@MrCarGuy Those 2.5L can't gain an extra 70+ horsepower with a simple 30 minute ECU flash. The balanceshafts sieze if someone doesn't keep up with their oil changes. Oil burning and piston rings was a common problem on all manufacturers who switched to variable tension piston rings hoping to reduce emissions. Timing chain tensioner... yeah VW fucked up with that one, though new revised tensioner was introduced in 2013. Timing chains stretch on a lot of turbocharged 2.0L cars now, just VW got a lot of the heat since VW group was first to start the turbocharged 2.0L engine movement. This car comes with a DSG dualclutch which is an insanely quick tranny with many TCU tunes, and engine with easy ECU flashes can get much power out of.

If you're complaining about the cost of filling up the Charger, it really gets horrible mileage since Kansas had some of the cheapest gas on the trip. Having started my journey with a '67 VW Squareback dual carb and a couple years later, a '69 Squareback with Bosch fuel injection and my first set of radial tires (Michelin XZX 6.00-15), I feel that cloth seats are much better than those vinyl on hot, humid days, and admit that 65 hp provided great learning experiences. Glad to see you with the antitheft device that defeats drivers unfamiliar, the system promoted by the Manual Gear Transmission Preservation Society. I've nearly added 8k miles in my year with a 2009 Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder, 5-speed manual, a slightly larger engine than my new '84 pre-Tacoma had, but the trucks have become larger and heavier, as have the drivers getting older... The truck just passed 26k miles on Monday. Dad took their Toyotas to the dealer for regular service, and I've been doing the same, as Toyota Diagnostic Technicians really like these clean trucks.
    I have added the AC drain extension mod so condensate water no longer drains on the frame to cause rust, and NHOU frame treatment last spring. (I learned to fly with an Aeronca Champ with a whopping 85 hp Continental, like flying the VW!)

    I just spent the weekend replacing the Water Pump and radiator on the 2.0 TSI in my 2013 CC, and I have a love/hate relationship with the TSI engine. Watch the oil leaks especially on the front side of the engine as oil can swell the gaskets on the water pump and blowout the plastic water pumps causing a leak. Also, there are no cam cover gaskets on a TSI. The Cam cradles use the special VW sealant which they are right proud of. Looking forward to any updates on the New Beetle.

    I bought a 2016 VW Beetle Classic on January 2017. I am at the 5 1/2 years mark and the only issue I had with it so far, is that on the second winter (i.e. 2018) of ownership, the dealer replaced an actuator for the passenger side power window on warranty. Beyond that, all I do for maintenance are regular oil changes twice a year in the spring and the fall. This car has been one of the most reliable and enjoyable cars I have ever known. I will keep that car until it no longer runs.

    Car Wizard, consider getting an updated VW RCD 330 Plus Radio that has CarPlay, since the Beetle has such a nice high-up radio location. These RCD 330 radios often get removed from VW cars in China when owners retrofit aftermarket Android systems, so most of the ones on eBay would be "good-as-new" used stock and are available relatively cheap.
    You could also look at ones that have been modified to have the USB routed around the back (by default they only have front panel USB) so that you could install the USB port out of the way and out of sight. Installation is super simple, (plug and play) and it even supports installing and wiring in a reverse camera too, if you wanted to add one.
    This simple change should give a nice update to the already comfortable interior.

    Funny, my aunt used to have a 2000ish yellow Beetle with the same "turbo" graphics down the sides. Only hers was a turbodiesel lol 5 or 6 speed manual. Fantastic car, she bought it in 2009-2010 to save money on her 60 mile commute, its been super reliable and does 45mpg. She retired and gave it to her grandson who is using it for the same purpose, it has to have 300,000+ miles on it by now. I'm amazed at how nice it looks, interior is clean, no rips in the seats, paint looks presentable, not a single spec of rust on the body(ohio car), but I bet if you put it on a lift its got some flavor underneath.

    The camera looks great, you have come so far since your first videos. Those stone chips on the front are a good sign that the miles are highway miles and not city miles, it even so it does seem excessive almost like the front bumper had a poor quality paint job in the past.. still it’s easy and not too expensive to fix at the same time as that dent. That first “smaller muffler exhaust” is called a resonator and it’s practically useless. It is intended to keep the decibels under legal noise. You can cut it out & add a pipe to see if it will change your mind.
    The Gen 1 & 2 have their quirks. They build up carbon deposits quicker then the newer gen3 which is on the 13+ as a 1.8T. Engine will start having your typical carbon build up symptoms too.
    Interesting to note is the diesel version of them are the most expensive for some odd reason. Most rare are the 2015, ea288 tdi, manual & convertible. Only the 2015s 2.0 tdi have a warranty of 11 years & 162k miles since the fix was initiated by VW. Maybe your next beetle will be tdi haha. Good luck 👍

When they showed off these longer nose kind of call backs to the older designs, I fell in love instantly and eventually got a manual turbo model myself, albeit with the candy white color and black accents over the silver. I haven't really had any issues I can't address in my shop, from my experience they're after the 00's era of wiring issues I ran into with a Passat wagon (to be fair, the Turbo Bug I had before like Wizard's never really had any problems outside of common issues, maybe it was a different factory?).
