There´s no reaction other than cry seeing and hearing all those voices singing togheter!
Poor Dereck, apparently born in the wrong decade. I thank God i grew up in the 70s.
So do I - I'm so THANKFUL to have experienced this in real time!...🎼🎶💃
Olivia singing Have You never been mellow is pure Paradise! 😍
I totally remember watching this on TV!!! What a great trip down memory lane!! Can you see any of today's stars doing this - taking turns and singing backup on another performer's song?!?!
Olivia was so excited and emotional, amazing show and live performance ... RIP Olivia, always in my heart!
Love your reaction to this. Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away in August at the young age of 73. The Queen made her a Dame the year before they both would pass. She was an angel among us for too short a time and a massively underrated talent. Wow, how many artists can claim 100 MILLION albums sold and such an incredible book of songs that spans six decades - no auto-tune, just pure talent! She was the shy mega-star that wanted to bring joy to the world with her voice and touch everyone ever affected by cancer! You only get one Olivia in a millennium! WATCH her ENTIRE catalog! I had the great honor of meeting her and she was one of the loveliest people I have ever known. RIP my friend!
Iconic performance! Olivia had her own show and ABBA was huge in Australia, to this day probably the country who appreciates ABBA's music the most❤
Dereck, check out Olivia: Hollywood Nights. 1980, broadcast before the Academy Awards. Elton John, Karen Carpenter, Tina Turner, Toni Tennille, Gene Kelly, Cliff Richard. Blows this one out of the water. Looking forward to the reaction. ❤️
Love them💕💕💕💕💕💕
Beautiful Agneta
i’ve been obsessed w this video since the early 00s, and i was born in the 90s. hearing ABBA do backing vocals on ONJ and Andy Gibb tracks is the BEST kind of surreal
Dancing Queen is a minefield of a song to sing and they just stand there and do it like it's nothing. That's why they are so Iconic.
And it is live, so you hear the orchestra
a 2 octave range isn’t hard for me, but i’m an anomaly in that regard, and so are frida and agnetha. note the lower key though. that was most likely done because these performances were done live, and lowering the key of most of the songs they perform is easier on the girls’ voices overall, which is an important consideration considering they were recording 20 minutes of both lead and backing vocals, WITH rehearsals.
i’m a vocalist myself, and i looooove when i’m playing with someone who can lower the key if we’re doing like, an hour of singing lol
YES. Degree of difficulty on ABBA vocals: a million percent. Agree @Experiment IV. I’m a singer too, and I’d love to sing with another girl for the harmonies. (I’m a mezzo with a big range but still)
This stuff is Golden!
How many legends can fit on one stage? My god this is truly one event to put in the books..Olivia, ABBA and Andy Gibb singing together...and also sounding incredible!
I had exactly the same reaction when I first saw this. So surprising and amazing.
Love it, there was a ton of extra content to this special including Frida singing opera, and all of them doing The Beach Boys!
ABBA 1st met Olivia in Brighton 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden. Olivia was representing the UK
I am listening on headphones. Agnetha in my right ear and Olivia on my left, especially in Dancing Quen you hear the stereo effect
This is so moving to watch after Olivia's passing, that amazingly talented group got together for this special mostly out of friendship, Andy passed away 10 years after this, way too young. ABBA got to pay tribute and say goodbye to Olivia through their social media, they became lifelong friends. It's insane how life just flies by like that, but man did they all shine so very brightly for as long as they did. Watching this almost 2 years later, but loved your reaction.
Omg !. All of them are sensational, ABBA, Andy. Olivia’s voice, out of this world. Me encanta !.
Olivia became friends with Frida. Both have a similar haircut in the earlier 80s
That makes me so happy!
May I suggest Olivia Newton John's "A Little More Love" the original video.. She had just finished and was riding on the success of the movie "Grease" and went a little "bad girlish" in the album for this song called "Totally Hot". She is really at her peak with this song. There's also her song "Magic" that has a couple of live performances with her in Daisy Dukes and Go Go boots where she totally slays it. Andy was the little brother of the Bee Gees, not a member but they wrote his songs and he sang with them live occasionally. Also Andy was dating Olivia perhaps about this period.
Unfortunately, even though that is called "live" in the description here, the Magic performance from the Midnight Special is lip sync. I can't think of an actual television performance of Magic that is truly live. The 80s were big on lip sync performances. There are several concert videos of her singing it live, though, but not the Black & White Midnight Special taping.
I'm about to cry....was a kid back in those days, so grateful with life and great, real music! (49 years now)
Olivia and Andy recorded together in studio a few songs. What's also amazing in this show is that they jam together as friends while they come from different countries (USA, UK and Sweden).
I have to say that the first time I saw this show it was rogasmic, because my all time favourite groups are The Bee Gees and ABBA. Although Andy was not part of the Bee Gees, seeng him singing ABBA songs was incredible. At that time disco music was at its top, and Gibb brothers and ABBA were almost competitors in the genre (Voules Vous was the "ABBA's disco" LP). Olivia was the star of Grease (with BG's main theme) and also sang several Gibb's songs. But having ABBA joining them was unique. I think the only other occasion they were together was the Unicef event.
The best part for me is what comes after were they are interviewed and improvise together.
LIVE!!! We will never see their likes again !!
Olivia Newton Jon is just outstanding. You need to react to some of her music.
Thank you for the music and thank you for the video ... Nothing compares with the music of my era
This was amazing to watch and hear....all of them are great,ABBA is my favorite, but it was also great to see Andy Gibb and the lovely cheerful and loveable Olivia Newton John that also have not just her amazing looks but more importantly,a great voice. Great experience, much happiness,no fakes, very real....great...
RIP Andy Gibb
this is pure gold!
You missed Frida singing opera when they warm up on stage before show start :)
Would love to see that.
@Mk Shffr Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/0gt3grMaHZI/v-deo.html
@@JF-sh2sm Thanks. Too cool. I bet if she made a serious effort she could do it up pretty good. She has great range and tone.
@@mkshffr4936 Frida could sing anything. Greatest talent in group. Wonderful lady too.
DAMN
RIP To Andy Gibb and Olivia Newton-John
I remember watching this special and was amazed at the talent on the stage at the same time!!!
Olivia is a GODDESS.
Dereck,, your reactions are just nuts. Gets me everytime .. love it.😁🤣😂
Olivia’s beautiful here
you're fun to watch!
thanks so much Dereck for this show. we don't know it in France. it was so beautiful.
I like all of your reactions Dereck, you're give us enjoy ! thanks for this !
Shadow dancing...such a good song...
There's a great 'jam session' on this show too, where they're all sitting around on chairs together singing some pop standards. It's a shame you missed this out. Maybe you could do that next time!! But, you really should check out ABBA's full version of 'Thank you For The Music', and 'Why Did It Have To be Me' (Live in Australia). That's a stunning live performance!
Yes love the Jam Session.
I just adore the jammin' session that comes later, I've been obsessed for year for this ONJ tv special. It's just perfection!!
'Thank You For the Music' lyrics are so beautiful. So humble and greatful. Makes me cry.
Yes where you hear Frida do a tiny bit of opera :D classic....and the "Help Me Rhonda" cover is amazing!
Absolutely phenomenal!
So glad to hear that you are pointing out that this is just pure raw talent not only that but also very beautiful people.
ABBA won the Eurovision Song contest with Waterloo in 1974. The Brits initially though they would win with Olivia Newton John's song 'Long Live Love', but she came in #4.
"Hopelessly Devoted To You" Is from the movie "Grease". If you've never seen that movie, you need to see it!!!
I've always thought ONJ's 'If Not for You' is a really underrated track.
Lol, I couldn’t decide to watch your reactions or the artists performance!! I love your reaction, priceless!! These are my teenage year growing up music, I love them still! (When I wasn’t listening to the hot rock bands of that time!!)
Terrific show, thank you!!❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
It's only an uncut medley from the 1978 Olivia Newton-John show on ABC, the full show is actually 48 minutes long
Where is the part where Frida sings opera? It was fantastic! Her talent went beyond everyone.
This version of this special, the vocals and music haven't been mixed yet to what went out over the air when this was originally broadcast. This sounds like the raw live feed. There is another version with the sound all mixed.
Yes, Olivia and Andy and ABBA all contribute to the backing vocals to each others performances.
Pretty awesome you thought this video was going to get taken down pretty much immediately but yet it's still going almost a year later awesome I'm so glad got the attention it deserved! This special is just amazing and it showcases all of their vocals so beautifully
Grreat Choice!! Next please THANK YOU FOR THR MUSIC - the whole Song by ABBA👍
Frida and Olivia were close friends. You need to do more on Olivia. Also look for her work with Andy Gibb and Barry Gibb duets. You will LOVE them.
Andy Gibb was of course lucky to have those two amazing singers to sing along, they know how to do it.
Love
Tremendous live show! I've never seen this before. What a show that was!
Andy Gibb generally was a solo artist only sometimes coming together with the Bee Gees. He sadly died young.
So glad you got to see this. I did get to see this on TV as a teenager, and it was so special. (I also saw ABBA live in concert, which was pretty darn special.)
Andy wasn't part of the Bee gees, he was the youngest and died when about 30 in the late 70s/ early 80s, please do why did it have to be me ABBA live in Australia if you get chance( Frida slays it)
yeah Dereck has to do that one for sure Paul , Frida really rockin out, and so hot she's on fire !!!
He was not even raised together. The Gibbs were in UK when Andy was in Australia, because hemis waynyounger
Well Said ! - Frida is amazing on this !!! 😀
yes please!! She rocked that song, as she did in all live performances as well
Andy died on March 10, 1988.
Olivia Newton-John
The most beautiful voice / singer / woman / human
Also, Barry Gibb not only wrote mostly all of Andy Gibb's Songs and produced them as well
AWWW MAN! Christmas is early!!! Thanks Derick!
I am lucky , I grew up with ABBA. World without ABBA;s music is a DEAD world
They recorded the show originally in stereo so that it could be released later commercially.
yep, still need to get my hands on a high quality laserdisc without a disastrous amount of disc rot to do a high quality transfer rip.
You did such an awesome job with this whole video going through each artist. Love the reactions.
That you posted this made me subscribe. Thank you for highlighting these amazing artists, especially Olivia. You asked for more recommendations… check out Olivia:Hollywood Nights, from 1980. Xanadu promo. Gene Kelly, Cliff Richard, Elton John, Andy Gibb, Tina Turner, Karen Carpenter, Toni Tennille. I shit you not. Olivia sings Candle in the Wind with Elton. SLAY. Check it out. Looking forward to your reaction!
Andy Gibb & Olivia Newton John singing I Cant Help It...Andy did a lot of duets & he was a master at blending with anyone he sang with
Im Swedish and its crazy with Olivia, from GREASE she is cute and sweet as a doll here and has an amaazing voice...
Olivia was high harmonising on Fernando.
It was a time when it was more about the music than the personalities.....
YEAH. Barry Gibb wrote Shadow Dancing. Not surprising b/c BRILLIANT.
Welcome to the '70s! Loved it!
I found this quite easily I got the entire special on a Disco-vision laserdisc in stereo. It might differ from was shown on TV,I don't think it came out on VHS or Beta.
Derick , Thank you! Thank you, so very much. This is such a treat. 🤗💖
Olivia Newton-John, off camera, singing some of the high harmony parts.
Quite obvious how he hits those high notes, when see how tight his pants are!!
Olivia every young boys crush.
I watched that special back in the day. Love your reactions!
ABBA weren't so popular in the USA in the 70s due to lack of touring extensively in the USA so this was done to push them into the light in the USA
I sure remember hearing them on the radio constantly in the 70's starting with Waterloo.
This special aired two years after Dancing Queen was number 1 in the US. Take A Chance On Me was also a top 5 hit for them by this time.
Pretty much every GenX woman wanted to be Olivia when she was a kid. She was epic ❤️
I saw Olivia Newton John in concert a couple of years ago.
I won the tickets.
Best concert ever. .Especially consider she has been sick..
She didnt miss a beat.
Andy Gibb I had a big crush on.
Thank you so much for this, Dereck, and to your friend that remastered the audio. There have been versions of this on UA-cam for years, but the sound always sounds distorted.
I remember when this special aired. I was so excited and couldn't wait for the night. I had been a HUGE fan of Olivia for several years already at that point. My mom was also a fan of Olivia (especially "Hopelessly Devoted to You"), so I remember watching the special with her. I LOVED ABBA as well, and had a huge crush on Andy Gibb, even though I was still pretty young. Everyone's voices sound SO good with nothing but live instruments and backing vocals. You could tell none of it was lip synced since the arrangements on all the songs are all slightly different from the recorded version from the albums. It shows you just how good of singers they all are.
I was lucky enough to see Olivia live several times. The first time was in Nashville at FanFair in 1998 when she released her album "Back With a Heart" when she returned to Nashville and worked with some of the biggest writers and producers at the time. She was the headliner for MCA records and closed the nighttime session. It was so cool because at FanFair they allow fans to walk right up to the stage and take pics during the entire performance. Being just a few feet away from her was incredible.
When she first started performing in Las Vegas, I was at a show over New Year's weekend. It was a great way to celebrate the New Year.
The next time I saw her she was accompanied by the Minnesota Symphony at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis. The Orpheum is such a beautiful theater with amazing acoustics. Probably my favorite of all the shows I have seen.
A few years later she was doing touring again and I had the chance to see her perform at a smaller casino in Minnesota.
I had tickets to see her perform again at a casino when she discovered her cancer had returned and she cancelled all shows. I feel so lucky that I was able to see her live so many times. It would have been incredible to see her in concert at the height of her career. There is a live concert that aired on HBO from the early 80's that you can find on UA-cam if would like to check it out and maybe react to it.
Another great Andy Gibb song is "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away." It's very much a ballad, but worth checking out. Because of this special, Olivia and Andy worked together on a couple of duets you really should check out. "I Can't Help It" is a really nice pop love song, and "Rest Your Love On Me" is a country-tinged love song. The vocals on "Rest Your Love On Me" are really incredible from both Olivia and Andy. If you appreciated this special, you really should check out that song at least.
This was part of ABBA month early 78 as a major push for them as the USA never took to them like the rest of world as they rarely travelled and to get “big” in the states you had to be there 24/7. ABBA rarely sang covers or appeared with other artists. Your reactions are just such a joy to watch. Keep them coming!
Thank God they’re now getting the recognition they deserve all around the world, especially in the US
They were asked to move to LA, NY or London, they refused and paid the price for that
Now you have to react to the proper version of ‘Thank Your for the Music’. It’s one of ABBA’s signature songs and it has an official video!
Oh my god am I feeling old right now...I had "Have You Never Been Mellow" on 8 track. Also, can we remember that Andy is only 20 years old here, absolutely amazing to watch, thank you!
Yep! You gotta do a reaction video to Andy Gibbs Shadow Dancing! THE 12 INCH!
what’s really great about the original video is that the stereo audio is panned in a way where i can tell whose voices of the 6 (very familiar w everyone in ABBA’s singing voices, including Benny’s, even though he barely ever sings, as well as ONJ and Andy) is in which ear, which doesn’t really change? it feels almost as if Frida is hard-panned to the right
Many think that Agnetha couldn't hit the low voice but in Fernando, she was doing the alto rather Frida. That's because the Original Fernando which was in Swedish was only sang by Frida.
@Juleo.Dart what i mean is on the studio version not this live version.
An I hear Olivia's voice in the chorus too
@Juleo.Dart prove it. Dont just say im wrong and you are right.
@Juleo.Dart ah shut up! You're just being a kid
Dereck, I've seen this special before on UA-cam. It really is great! It originally aired the month before I was born. Thanks for reacting to this, you did a great job! ~Chris
That performance for Fernando might be my favorite performance for the song!
Love, love your reaction to this! There is another part to this video when they are having a casual jam session. All sitting in a circle singing old songs and Frida sings opera. They talk about Andy’ famous brothers The Bee Gees.
"Ahh! A rotation!" Agneta turned sideways. :)
Did you know? In 1974 Abba and Olivivia newton john competed in the eurovision festival, the most important song contest in europe. olivia got 4th. Place with long live love and abba won the festival with waterloo.
Dereck Can you please do a reaction to Andy Gibb Ft. Olivia Newton-John I can't help it reaction ❤❤❤❤
Wow I didn't know this was out there! Thank you! Not sure if this aired in the States? I would've been a little kid but I believe I would have remembered this.I loved ABBA and had the BIGGEST crush on Andy Gibb ❤
If You Love Me Let Me Know was a huge early hit for Olivia. Recorded in London studios if I recall.
And Elvis Presley sang that song live too
Too bad you didn't see Frida sing opera. Just a few notes....Frida had a blast.... you really need to watch the LIVE Eurovision 1974 ABBA performance of Waterloo. And then after they win the second performance.
I saw this on abc the night it aired. If I remember correctly, the carpenters space encounters special aired the hour before in abc. It was one great night of tv that night!!
Well done Dereck! I think you are right with the horns and brass, probably to bring all songs/music together to create a "whole" sound. Do you know that a lot of ABBA fans consider you the TRUE reactor of ABBA's songs? Since a lot of opportunists showed up for the new songs. You know ABBA. Yes Olivias hair - very bouncy! Get that haircut! Also I like your "DR-Appoved"-thing, it's fun! John from Sweden
Andy Gibb was not part of the Bee Gees Derek. He was the youngest, 4th brother. He died from a drug overdose a couple of years after this show...
Andy Gibb: The Baby Bee Gees Epitome
olivia was is / a beautiful woman with a very beautiful voice!
