My dad slowly succumbed to congestive heart failure over several years. He always asked us to have someone play this at his funeral. He got his wish over 13 years ago. Wow...
This is brilliant. The definitive version. The one on the Super Trouper has too many overdubs. But it is a spectacular song. It makes me tear up every time too.
I think the reason listeners have an emotional reaction to this song is that it's being performed in a way that is beautiful and dramatic yet very simple and straight forward. And the lyrics basically say that even though we fight, we are going to be friends for life. And through the good and bad that may come it will be okay. You will not be alone. We will always have each other and together we will face whatever comes . That is the message that tugs at the heart and brings tears.
What's crazy is that Steps covered one of BAO songs "Story of A Heart" and it was continually being billed as an "ABBA" song, but it was only written by Benny and Bjorn, but never intended for ABBA, but BAO plays it frequently.
One of the best Abba songs. It reaches straight to the heart. A song from 1980. Unfortunately, there's no contemporary artist who could write and perform a song like this today.
@@scottydogx because want to have their comments voted up, that is why so many people claim to have witnessed historical events. I was born in 85 but if I say I was there as well, anyone could believe my story. I just find very unlikely the story.
WHO doesn't love this and get teary-eyed when listening to it? It is a fantastic song. Agnetha and Bjorn were separated at this time and had filed for divorce and STILL chose to tour together. So, I always felt that made this emotional song even more poignant. They, the next summer came "The Winner Takes It All" single and video. I am certain both songs, that Bjorn wrote lyrics to, were a direct inspiration from his divorce from Agnetha. I recently saw a French woman interview Bjorn in Stockholm, It was a short, maybe 20 minute, very well produced interview. She asked so many great questions - some, nobody has ever asked him. One question was was there anything he wished he had done differently in his life. He responded about his divorce with Agnetha and how he wished id had turned out differently or something to that effect. I was shocked and he seemed to be reflective and pause on the question. He always says TWTIA is "pure fiction." But, we all know otherwise. This interview solidified that feeling to me, that he wrote it about his life experience with divorce...
For your next ABBA reaction I would recommend: That's Me, Our Last Summer, Dream World, I do I do I do Ido I do, Ring Ring (1973 version), Lovelight. } The Way Old Friends Do always gives me chills and something that I love about ABBA is that I love every song for very different reasons, that's part of their magic! As always, great reaction Dereck.
Das war Mal wieder eine gute Wahl, die Dereck da getroffen hat!!! 👍👍👍 Und er war sichtlich gerührt!!!😢😢 Einfach nur schön anzusehen und zu hören!!! Soooo Fantastic!!!👌👌👌 🇸🇪 🔊 🎼 🎵 🎶 🎹 🎸👏👏👏
Derek you must watch Agnetha live in Australia from the movie i've been waiting for you and SOS. The best live versions by far. Great reactions by the way from the UK 👍
Must have been! They did 10 nights there in a row and it was their last concert. We could all feel it was the end of ABBA. We knew about the A-B breakup, you could hear it in their voices and sings and lyrics. Super Trouper was their 2nd last album and this song is the last track. When their final album, The Visitors came out, both the cover and the songs were dark, somber and sad - and that feeling of finality we heard previously, became a sad reality. But at least, after 40 years, incredibly, they’re back !
This song is one I keep linking my lifelong friend of over 50years in ...... we have been through so much together through the years, and even though she is thousands of miles away from me in Australia, we are always there for each other "the way old friends do"
What a great reaction. Thank you for not pausing this brilliant performance from ABBA. You managed to comment quietly which was really good. I've listened to this over the years and I still fill up. It's so emotional and brilliantly sung plus the accordion, 🪗 A lovely instrument. Thanks again 👏 ❤
I just recently played this song to my friend of many many years who has terminal cancer we shed so many tears this song really hits home thank you for the reaction
I love this song. It's hugely popular in Ireland where it's been covered by many folk artists and is a bit of a New year anthem. You should check out the UA-cam video of the band's 2016 'reunion' in Stockholm which uses this song and 'Thank You For The Music' as its background music. It's intensely moving to see the four of them in public together for the first time in over 30 years!!
I was lucky enough to have seen them in Dublin in 79....all I can say is WOW....an experience I'll never forget. ...I was stood at the stage front gazing up at beautiful agnetha when they sang this....it was extra sad because she and bjorn had recently split....
I have a New Year’s playlist and this is on it. It fits perfectly. New Year’s for me is a melancholic as well as optimistic time; looking back and looking forward, and this song perfectly captures that feeling of looking back on your friendships and looking forward to many more years together.
They were and are just AMAZING!! React to more ABBA Live there’s some really good stuff with lots of energy-check it out!! Thanks for all the ABBA-my favorite group evvvvvver!!
The accordion was Benny's first instrument and as a boy he would play with his father and grandfather. Nice review for an emotional number Dereck, I think apart from the wonderful 'Our Last Summer' you've now reviewed every song on the 'Super Trouper' album.
I think it was in 2016 - There was a celebration of Benny & Bjorn - 50 Years - anyway Agnetha & Frida got on. Stage and sung this song - there is a poor quality version on you tube - the girls still sound amazing together 👍😊
Ayyy..cuántos abrazos y besos postergados, ya podremos, volver a abrazar y besar a los amigos. Pronto. Gracias por esta reacción, aunque me ha puesto nostálgica. Abrazos Fuertes 🌞🌞🌞🌞
I also looove these live recording, they're so intense live. Frida had a severe case of tonsillitis during the live recordings from London 1979 - it's well-known and even says so on the live album inner sleves. But they all had a special relationship with the British audience, esp. London, which was the capital of European pop music at that point, so they didn't cancel. Love that also.
ABBA recorded a studio version for Super Trouper album, but the live version had such magic, emotion and life to it that wasn't present on the studio version, they decided to put the live version on the Super Trouper album instead.
I'm 52 and this song still brings tears to my eyes.
I’m 58 and still tear up. Beautiful song!
I’m 14 and it makes me cry happy tears
I’m 13 and abba truly is the best, happy and poppy songs to sad and music to put on happiness crying ❤️
I'm 51 and yes, its a very special song.
55 and .....same
This one gives me GOOSEBUMPS. Such a finale for a live concert. Give me a time machine and bring me back in time to an ABBA-concert....
But beware, you will lose your internet connection!
... right after a Queen-concert... live them both, as different as they are.
My dad slowly succumbed to congestive heart failure over several years. He always asked us to have someone play this at his funeral. He got his wish over 13 years ago. Wow...
I am going to have like an angel passing through my room played at my funeral
It looks like a national anthem. It should be the World Anthem when Life comes back to normal
I think "anthem " from chess would be more apt.
I've thought that as well about this song - can't wait to see and hug all my friends and family again.
@@oceans80 Hope, that's the word.
But the ABBA members are not friends, except Benny and Bjorn.
@@resireg they're family....they have a love for each other like brothers and sisters. ...
Perfection!!! And no auto-tune!! So much talent on that stage.
My granny is still young to hear this being 96 years old.
The fantastic harmony of the girls vocals is even more enjoyable on slower numbers
Even Frida said recently that Agnetha has the gift in her voice for telling the story of a song.
This song should be the world’s anthem!
This song is so emotional. Abba is HUGE!
Impresionante la armonía vocal de Agnetha y Frida!! Espectacular!!
This is brilliant. The definitive version. The one on the Super Trouper has too many overdubs. But it is a spectacular song. It makes me tear up every time too.
This song is for Abba what We are the champions is for Queen. Fantastic song.

They can hit on every emotion ... Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Benny started to play Swedish folk music, traditional music, and schlager with accordion. It's his primary instrument.
You must be familiar with the Benny Andersson Orchestra? If not...have fun...😉
It shows.That folk background. Wonderful.
What's crazy is that Steps covered one of BAO songs "Story of A Heart" and it was continually being billed as an "ABBA" song, but it was only written by Benny and Bjorn, but never intended for ABBA, but BAO plays it frequently.
ESPECTACULAR!!!!! ABBA IS PURE ART
Beatiful. Is abba !!!! The one and only abba
This song should be played more on the radio. Especially in these difficult moments!!!
I love this song ❤️😍❤️😍
For me this song and "Ode to Freedom" are the best closers to any Abba album. They never fail to move me in tears.
A gem in the Abba catalogue.
love this song 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
2 angels singing. I think this song brings tears of joy to almost everyone
One of the best Abba songs. It reaches straight to the heart. A song from 1980. Unfortunately, there's no contemporary artist who could write and perform a song like this today.
The ABBA feeling! Tears of joy!
It's big like an anthem at the same time intimate and friendly.. It gives me goosebumps every time.. The way they build it is pure genius :)
I was there! Wembley 1979 with tears of joy then and again now. Thank you so much for doing this one.
Sounds like a lie. Here on You Tube I always see those guys claiming that welcome the Beatles at JFK, or watched Elvis in Honolulu. So much BS
@@resireg actually I saw them twice. February 1977 in The Apollo Glasgow and again November 1979 in Wembley. Why would I lie?
Lucky you !
You are so lucky. I was 3 years old.

Your ABBA reactions are by far the best of all on UA-cam.
Sold gold Mr!
Goosebumps and tearing up
Still after 40 years 😍
With ABBA there's a song for every moment.
A beautiful choice for the closing song of their classic and «iconic» "Super Trouper" album.
Finally you've done this most beautiful of songs.. ♥♥ ♥ ♥
MASTERPIECE
La armonía perfecta de esas voces .Frida y Agnetha ❤
After the way old friends do, i still have faith in you, waiting for that.
A Wonderful Scottish Sounding Anthem - Just Like Old Lang Syne...Just Brilliant !!!
Simple lyrics, simple tune, simply brilliant.
So powerful!
I would highly recommend 'Our Last Summer'. Hauntingly beautiful.
Benny and Bjorn both play several instruments, including accordion, saxophone, etc. Agnetha was an accomplished pianist and also played accordion.
Sooooo glad you covered this beauty!
I'm 60, but this song makes me cry - and always has! It is about love & friendship .... so beautiful :)
tears of joy, for sure, the deepness of the song!
An excellent last track on the Super Trouper album. I remember listening to it loud on headphones on my dad's stereo aged about 10.
I wish I could have seen them live. I’ve followed them since 1974 and LOVE them!

They put this song live on there album because of the atmosphere and the reaction of the audience
Que canción tan hermosa!!!.
I don’t know if I teared up more from seeing the performance in the video or seeing you tear up watching the video. So sweet!
You are quickly becoming an "Old Friend" Dereck, thanks for the ABBA reactions and love for your followers!
